    The problem with the BIOS passwords is all the while everything works fine you don't have to worry but if you wind up needing to format the drive and do a fresh windows install one of the things that is often locked is the boot menu so you can't boot from USB. Especially if you want to install Linux and have to go into BIOS settings and turn off secureboot or something.

    I have accumulated many Lenovo laptops model release around 2018 to 2019 because the parts is relatively new and still can last for 3-5 year of use. Most of them come with NVMe, thunderbolt 3, or type C charging ports which you can buy 65W PD charger at Aliexpress easily and cheap (ignore those before 2017). If you are trying to run those laptops for serious gaming and video editing, I think you will be disappointed. If you are using those for general purposes like web and browser kind of work, that will be great. But I think if you think of those laptops as collectable and give you pleasure, you won't be disappointed. I have few suggestions. 1.) set your price to under $100, no need to go over that. Save your money and few years later, you can buy 2022 laptops, and if it die, won't break your heart. 2.) If you intent to travel with it, 14" is the one to go. I suggest the following X1 yoga 3rd Gen, X1 Carbon 6G ($150), X1 Carbon 5G (you can find under $100), T490 or T490s. Chose a nice screen with touch screen 1080P. 3) Battery still can last 5-6 hours, you don't want to buy new battery (expensive, buy power banks that can give you 65W, if you really needed, many choices today for under $30). 4.) Don't buy something that you need to replace parts (Other than add RAM or NVMe). At the end, it will cost you too much and if laptop die, all money wasted. There are also P70 (that cost more than $250, too heavy) but a great workstation laptop. You can get a mini desktop and a 24" monitor. For those 14" laptops that I mentioned. Every time I touch it, I feel great. Be patient, just pay attention to the new listing. I consider the best buy when I saw two T490s (with 1080P and touch screen) for sale (No MVMe) and total cost after 250G MVMe is $112 each. Great price. Just be patient.

      for general advice if you want to put linux or not be stuck on windows home edition make sure the bios is unlocked. If it is locked then maybe you are lucky and the seller could unlock it and if not then you outta luck. The t480s has a stick that is soldiered already so it could have a 4 gig stick already soldiered in it and you can only add one more stick

    Can't really advocate p14s QC. Gone through 4 (mix of gen 2 and gen 3) in the last 18 months. Mix of issues from overheating, display adapter based BSODs, one would crash if I placed pressure (holding 1handed) to the left of the touchpad. Several colleagues still operate theirs upside down (plugged into external monitor) to prevent overheating. Gen 3 specific issue was atrocious battery life. I.e. 100-0% in less than an hour.

    You know what I don't get? The price! And from a reputable seller. Unless its just an unnoticed auction. I got a Thinkpad x270 around 3 years back, 3.5 maybe, which is basically identical to an x260. Mine was with the basic i5-6200u, 8 GB RAM and 180 GB SSD, with a low-res HD 1366x768 TN screen (which I don't mind), without a backlit KB, for I almost 300 £ then. Got it from a refurbisher, it was the cheapest online price available, I looked (eBay, cEx). Then it had been almost 4 years since launch. (Currently it is almost 7.5 years since launch, which started at around 800$ or 600 £). My question is, why would the price only halve for the first part of the above 7.5 yr time period, and then suddenly collapse, getting 4-5x lesser?

    • @cephacore
      @cephacore 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Laptop prices usually collapse when businesses and schools retire them, this usally occurs 3-5 years after release. Maybe three years back the X270 was still a usable laptop for many but as time goes by people are more reluctant in buying them. Still, it doesn't mean the X270 is at all useless. The X260 in the video clearly demonstrates that

    • @paulpaudel
      @paulpaudel 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@cephacore Hmm yeah. For people interested in minimal and frugal stuff like me then, I think it's worth it to know the inflection point when that happens (most businesses retiring such products). Mine was a retired business piece as well (some probably do that in 3-4 years or less?), as far as I know (the TN screen, the no-backlight KB I think is business). But probably there were enough business or people looking to keep or buy those then. And the market probably wasn't flooded with enough pieces as most businesses got rid of them. Hence the high-ish, almost 50% of the release price at almost 4 years of launch.

  • @paulpaudel
    @paulpaudel 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    X1 Carbon from then or a X260/270, what do you think? I think the latter takes the cake, looks, form factor and future-proofing wise (that is barely enough ram these days, no?). The tapered edges look decidedly non-thinkpad. Boooooo! (But not for the price lol, I'd buy 10!) BTW great video! And I echo others' sentiments abt your channel! I can't believe it didn't have 500 subs like 1 month back! And now it's already 1500+... Gotta check out other videos of yours, since when you've done it and learn the pattern, so that I can have my own little quirky weird nerdy tech channel that's loved by niche people some day. Don't come across a lot of hardware where I live though, so that's a bummer. But maybe will start with what I have and use, and maybe also talk about my workflow with the software tools I use for study/work, etc.

    • @cephacore
      @cephacore 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, for longevity the X260/70 and even X280 are superior. Very small form factor with enough upgrade potential. They're simply excellent machines, especially for the money. Hmm... you might want to try another panel, that line is likely indicative of a sporadic panel manufacturing defect; I'd bet a 14" FHD panel from a T450/460 would work, and you could choose a better panel vendor as well. For instance, just today I harvested the 1920x1200 CCFL panel from a Dell Latitude D830 I found dumpster-diving to upgrade the 1680x1050 panel in my $29.99 Goodwill-find T500. I had to disassemble the screens themselves to swap the metal housings due to differing mounts, otherwise once that was done it was _plug & play._ The panel has some slight scratches/blemishes, but it's not easily visible and those panels are getting crazy-expensive on eBay, so I'm happy with how things worked out overall. Luckily, those newer LED backlit models like your L450 use are really cheap to manufacture and abundant to source... I reckon a used pull 15.6" FHD panel would set you back $15-25 (vs $100-150 for 15.4" CCFL). Even if it doesn't work for that specific series (there's a chance they crippled the ribbon cable to only output HD/HD+ and not FHD), it's low risk and you can always repair another device with a broken panel at a later time. _shrugs_ I say, "do it."

      Refurbished is the way to go, especially with laptops.

    I just bought a used T570. $100 delivered, including a power supply. Not as well-made as earlier Thinkpads. But I’m getting a lot of work done for $100.

      Sounds like a solid machine, I've yet to find a 15 inch ThinkPad. Will look into getting one on the channel.

      The t470p is a powerhouse, prices are usually cheaper than the T480 even here. It's crazy.

      I love the X1 Carbon's, such premium devices for not much money. Could easily pass for a more modern thinkpad.
