As much a personal record and fun project as anything else, this channel is to record my challenges, travels, adventures and more. But maybe, just maybe, they can show what it is possible to do with minimum use of resources and money. Living doesn’t have to cost the earth!
Now I have posted quite a few videos and have a couple of hundred subscribers, I'd like to take this a bit further so I'm trying to learn more skills to make better content and would really appreciate people liking, subscribing and taking to time to make comments. I've included my email so please feel free to suggest any challenges you'd like me to take on or scope out for you and I'll see what I can do.
I only have a few rules, my adventures have to be as low carbon as possible with the minimum ecological footprint. So flying is out of the question!

Hardknott Pass ebike challenge
I blame Dave, it was his idea! Why don't I try taking a cheap ebike designed for town use and see how it (I) coped going up Hardknott Pass.
Hardknott Pass, known as the “King of Climbs” and possibly the hardest climb in England, is notorious for its sharp hairpin bends and demanding gradients (30% +). A test that would push your muscles to their limits even on a suitable bike. The rhythmic mechanical clanking of failing bike parts and the occasional hum of electrical distress create a soundtrack that accompanies the ascent.

Shrewsbury Floods January 2024
มุมมอง 1K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
The River Severn peaked at just under 5m on Thursday 4th January 2024. This is below the record 5.25m recorded in November 2000 but it still caused considerable disruption in the town. Science is telling us that we can expect more severe floods more often in Shrewsbury as we head deeper into the climate emergency.

A recent ride out to Stwlan Dam which I'd heard so much about. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling at my best so really struggled in the humid conditions. But the route out from Shrewsbury to Blaenau Ffestiniog is a great ride and the closed road up to Stwlan Dam is perfect for cycling. Fresh' almost perfect, tarmac with only the odd sheep to worry about. I also had a few more chances to try out usi...

Our adventure continues and now takes us out into the sea. The first time we have done this in an open boat. We met three other canoeists as we approached the sea so at least there was some hope of rescue in a worst case scenario! Our technique was to 'quarter' the sea. This section was so exciting that we were too busy to film, sorry! It was all worth it when we got to Smirisary Beach, even th...

Day 3 of our trip from Glenfinnan, down Loch Shiel, down the River Shiel into Loch Moidart. Then into the sea and back up Lock Ailort. The weather was kind to us and it was an absolutely amazing trip. In this episode we visit Finan's Island with it's old burial ground and ruined chapel. Then it's onwards to the surprisingly shallow end of the Loch and the River Shiel. It was down this river we ...

Day 2 of our canoe trip around the 'Loch Shiel Circuit'. This is a short video we were taking it pretty easy into a bit of a headwind and some sometimes choppy water. Our original idea for a camping spot was foiled by Black Throated Divers, but that's fine. Other options were available. www.strava.com/activities/9150533703
Loch Shiel Canoe Circuit Day1

We were looking for a circular canoe adventure, which is not that easy to find. Scouring the OS maps we came up with an idea to do a circuit starting from Loch Shiel and making use of the railway connection to link start and finish points. Who knew the 'Loch Shiel Circuit' is a 'thing'! This is the drive up and day 1 on the Loch. There's more to come!

A very wet January 2023 in the English Lake District. But you've got to get out for a ride or two. Coniston Water was overflowing, the rain turned to fine stinging hail and the wind got worse and worse as I cycled and pushed up the Walna Scar Road. I eventually made it up and over the Walna Scar Road and back to the cottage, but my hands stopped working so no filming of the decent or the shiver...

Just came across your channel. I’ve done a few days on loch Shiel and it was great. This trip of yours was on another level, very well filmed beautiful and relaxing and showed parts of the trip I’ve not seen on other videos. You were so lucky with the weather as well. One of the best series of videos on the Loch Shiel circuit I’ve seen, certainly the most relaxing.
I'm glad you liked the video and thank you for your kind words. Yes, we were really lucky with the weather. I've had a bit of a break from TH-cam but have got some footage I'm currently editing for a few more cycling videos. So watch this space for those. If you have any ideas for other trips I can do please let me know. I was thinking of a Loch Morar - Loch Nevis circuit at some point, but a Source to Sea on the Severn is also calling and that's much more local for me!

Did you have someone else with you along the pathway? I don't get where your bag is kept, did it fit inside your Kayak?
I just had someone at the start who did a little bit of filming. After that I was on my own until the pickup and Grindley Brook. The kayak has hatches front and back and you can get a load of stuff in there. The only thing that didn't fit in was the frame for the trolley/wheels, you can seen that strapped on the back. I think that I could take all I need for several weeks camping, as long as I could resupply with food and water every few days or so.
@@robinmager okay cool, I thought it would stored. I'm going kayaking along there in June but just for a day. Our plan is to go from Pontcysyllte to Chirk and then back to Pontcysyllte. Any tips or things to know? Thanks
@@Morts81 My advice would be take care of the narrow boats, they are not all manned by experienced crews! I would wait to follow a narrow boat across the aqueducts and through the tunnels. You really don't want to meet one coming the other way! Have a good headtorch for the tunnels. If you can start at the Trevor Basin and make it to the Poachers pub you'd get two tunnels and two aqueducts and they're the most exciting parts of the whole journey. I believe food is available at both the Telford Inn and the Poachers. In theory you should have a licence to paddle on the canal. I joined the BCU to get what I needed. Hope that helps.
@@robinmager Yeah I have a paddle license for the canal. Thanks for the advice 🙂
You can tell Heather got her fancy camera out for this one. Not sure if she will again after you almost ran her down! Haha
I've found there's more I can do with my phone camera now. It doesn't come anywhere close to Heather's fancy pants camera, but gives me some more scope for experimenting. It makes editing much harder though!
A mid drive ebike would have worked a lot better
Undoubtedly, also any appropriate 'acoustic' bike would have worked a lot better. I've done the route many times and this was by far the hardest. My next attempt may well be on a cargo bike, that might make for interesting viewing!
Pointless exercise.
Many things are pointless, including many social media comments!
Madness! But I don't expect anything less.
Hello Robin, great videos, what an adventure. I'm heading there this June and I'd love to pick your brain a bit. I'll be driving from Germany so want to make certain I have all in order before hand. might I be able to email you?
Hi, Glad you liked the videos. It's a wonderful trip but I guess there'll be more midges in June! I'm happy for you to email me with any questions - you can use robinmager451@gmail.com
I was floating down the top end of the canal on Thursday whilst on a working in water course. Decided I’d come back with my kayak and found this video. Nice footage of the aqueducts 👍🏼
Glad you liked the aqueduct footage. It's still early days with the DJI mini, so hopefully I'll be able to include more drone footage in future videos.
When you approach the graveyard I can feel the soul of the place. Thank You for the video and the 4 days on Loch Shiel
Glad you liked the video and the footage of the graveyard on Eilean Fhianain. I'm hoping for another canoe trip in Scotland this year.
Wait till it becomes a 15 minute city shortly, you'll permanently have to park your car outside & walk in lmao... You guys need to wake up to what your council is doing!
Sounds like a good idea... you need to wake up to what the world is doing!
@@robinmager so you actually want to contact the council everytime you want to venture out of the area & get a permit?
@@neogirl37 that is not what 15 minute cities are about. Of course you can believe what you like, though why you have to comment about 15 minute cities on a video about flooding is a mystery.
Great vid, ive been looking for new routes to paddle, and this has just made the list!!
I'm glad you liked the vid and it's given you some ideas. Top tips for easy access refreshments/supplies are the Poachers just south of Chirk, and Tesco Superstore at Ellesmere both right by the water.
What a fabulous distraction, thanks Robin
You're welcome Louise
Lovely, interesting and very relaxing. Loved the various edits and drone footage. So beautiful and to be able to camp out and get on the water at 5am is very special. Thank you
Glad you liked it. It's a great way to travel; no pack to carry, no hills to climb and all the while seeing the world from a new angle.
A lovely interesting watch, thanks Robin.
Glad you liked it Helen. Probably a bike vid next, but I have more canoe/kayaking plans... watch this space!
Wow that’s where we walked! Any of the houses flooded? Great views sadly too much water.
Becoming an annual event now, houses and businesses flooded and lots of nasty stuff in the water too 🤢
It wasn't as bad as it has been in the past. I think most people in the areas at risk are pretty well prepared now. I doubt their insurance still covers them for flood damage though! It must be pretty devastating to have all that dirty water invading your property or business.
Excellent adventure, loved watching it. Thanks for sharing. Now I just need to palm our kids off on the in-laws for a few days. 😂
Glad you liked it. Good luck with off loading the kids!
Brilliant series, well done! I am hoping to explore this area in April 2024, hopefully i will have the weather that you had, without the midges!
I think you stand a good chance of dodging the midges in April, keep an eye out for ticks though! It is an absolutely fantastic area and hopefully you'll have good weather to enjoy it in. Good Luck.
Thanks, I know ticks are pretty much a year-round phenomenon unfortunately so I will take all the precautions i can. Can’t wait! 😁
Looks amazing. Have only done 1 paddle on the Severn so far but plan to do the entire river from Welshpool down to the mouth. How difficult was it going upstream against the flow?
On that particular day it wasn't too bad going against the current. It's more of an issue if you're in a open boat / Canadian canoe or if the water levels are up. I was probably going half the speed compared to coming back with the flow. I've done quite a bit of the Severn at different times, but not upstream of Melverley or down past Stourport. I'm hoping to do the whole thing as one big multiday adventure next year.
@@robinmager Thanks for the info. We generally use inflatables which are not the fastest but they are either partially or full drop stitch construction so they are generally not really noticeably slower than Sit on Top hard shell kayaks. The only section of the Severn I've done to date is Holt Fleet to Worcester. It seems more sedate and predictable than the Wye so far, presumably due to the weirs which result in the water being more steadily flowing, giving the river a slightly 'canalised' feel to it. Doing the entire river would be a great multi day adventure
@@TheKayakCrew down by Worcester you're well into the 'canalised' section of the river (for which you should have a licence). Upstream of Stourport it is much more natural with the only weir I can think of being the one at Shrewsbury. The Jackfield Rapids are the most 'interesting' bit of water, but up towards Welshpool there can be hazards like fallen trees, etc. I hope you get to paddle the length of the Severn. When I get round to it next year I'll post a vid on TH-cam. I'm just in the process of trying to edit a video of a 2 day trip along the Llangollen Canal from the Horseshoe Falls right across Shropshire to the Cheshire border.
@@robinmager thanks for the info about the Severn. It sounds like the nature of river changes the further you go upstream . Look forward to your videos of the Llangollen canal. Only part of it I know is the stretch around the aqueduct near to Llangollen.
Brilliant little trip. Fantastic and thanks for sharing. great ending. James
Not quite the ending I had planned, but it all worked out well. I don't think I'd change much if I was doing it again.
That is FANTASTIC! Well done you guys and thanks for sharing. What a lovely little camp spot... I'm hoping to get there next month. Well done! James
Glad you liked it. Hope you have good weather next month - it'll make all the difference!
Looking forward to watching it :-)
Brilliant video Robin. Great balance of content and well put together. Love it. Stunning scenery!!.....and GREAT drone use! Just seen you get the music from the YT Audio Library. (Always the biggest issue on TH-cam I find music). Thanks fella!
Hi Mark, Thanks for the compliments. Yeah getting music can be a bit of a challenge. We've got a few instruments here so home brewed backing tracks could be a possibility to investigate?!
@@robinmager I honestly wouldn't be surprised either!!! Be good to catch up when you're next over.
Just found you. Now subscribed having binged watched this mini series. Inspirational stuff Sal & Robin, I doff my cap. The circuit looked perfect, and perfectly executed. Best regards Paul
Glad you liked this series of vids and really glad you've subscribed. More videos coming soon.
Wow, absolutely stunning. We did the NC500 the other year in the Tesla (tgat was challenging with charhing being, erm, 'sporadic'). The beaches and sea on the north and west coast of Scotland are incredible (rumour has it a Carribbean tourist board used photos of them in their brochures!!). You use a Mini 2 btw? Awesome Robin & Sal, awesome.
The west coast of Scotland (and the Hebrides) are truly amazing places. Yes I'm using a Mini 2. The drone is great but I'm thinking of switching to Litchi for the software.
@@robinmager Totally, we were shocked just how nice it is. Beautiful desolation. We took 10 days to do the NC500 to soak it all in. Litchi is good and will be stable on the 2. What's the Fly app not delivering for you??
The Fly/DJI apps occasionally require a log in, which can be a real pain/showstopper. Also no follow mode and no option for survey missions.
@@robinmager good call then yeah.
Wow.. Looks beautiful. :-)
Thanks, It was amazing!
Beautiful, what an adventure with great cooking.
You don't half do some great stuff.
Wait till you see the next episode! Smirisary Beach in good weather... beautiful !!

You make it look not so hard lol
So beautiful love this, the drone film is just right, and the shots of cooking are teasing, next time please show the finished dish. Amazing how much you carried with you. So quiet lovely thank you.
Glad you liked it Maria. I'm still learning the art of filming, so the drone is a new addition and I keep missing great bits to film because I'm to busy dealing with the situation, admiring the view or eating the food! I absolutely recommend this kind of trip. Wild camping is legit on Scotland so you can relax and set up camp early without fear of irate landowners. The canoe takes all the weight of the kit and food for a week so it's pretty easy going unless you hit a brisk headwind or tide. It's persuaded me that it's worth taking on the midges for the experience of wild Scotland.
@@robinmager Brilliant planning, of course, I hadn't thought of it - the canoe takes the weight and no angry landowners. Look forward to your next video.
I have done this trail on my mountain bike and I loved every second of it
Amazing view! Music harmonizes with the video, gives an amazing feeling.
My favourite places, it's beautiful!

Lots of great rides in Shropshire. I'll try to film some more of them. Cheers.
Beautiful! Love the heart shaped cloud behind the seagul haha
Can't beat the lakes in the rain... lovely job Robin.
Haha thanks for the shout out! Glad you enjoyed it - was tough weather! 🌧
Nice to have met you. I decided against a recce of leg 2 of the Bob Graham and instead took my bike over the Walna Scar Road... mistake! Video probably coming shortly.
Park runs are a good, safe way of people running. We regularly walk here because it us so lovely. Gnosall Globetrotters is our local running club. Good video
I'm guessing you visit either the Stafford or Telford parkruns. I think I'll have to pop over to the Telford one soon. Glad you liked the video.
Tough ride as it sort of looks up hill, is that right? Great paths once off that main road
Hi Maria, there were a few hills in the mix just to try and liven it up a bit. The canal is in the flatlands to the north of us. The bigger, and more interesting, hills are to the south.
I ran leg 1 a month or so back. I had the same mindset as you at the bridge after Great Calva. I ended up running across the bridge first, then backtracked went up the path to the right…and finally back to the bridge where I discovered that smaller path 😂🤦🏻♂️ That heather was energy sapping but a superb workout nonetheless.
I was lucky to get a tip off as to the right route or I’d have been doing the same. Shows how a recce could save valuable time and energy when taking this on as part of a bigger challenge! Doing that route again I’d be tempted to opt for ‘longs’ to keep the heather at bay and gortex socks, for obvious reasons. Happy running!
Hey Robin, I like your vids. What do you use to film everything? Do you have a GoPro mount on your helmet?
Hi, Glad you’re liking the vids (if you haven’t subscribed please do!) I have a GoPro but no helmet mount. Some of this vid was filmed using a grill/mouth mount. I’ve also used a chest mount and wrist mount for some videos in the past. I think the mouth mount is a good move though as you can easily switch to hand held mode. I just need to breathe quieter !!!
bro. thanks~ great shots!seey a!,😯
Very interesting, especially as we live in Gnosall, midway between Stafford and Newport and we walk the Greenway regularly
That route between Newport and Stafford is fantastic. It's a shame they've not managed to do the same with many other old railway tracks. Shrewsbury to Ironbridge would be a great one.
Nice video ☺️
Is that right - rain only four days ago? Love the different angles 👏🏼
