Frames of Empathy
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 ก.ค. 2016
"Movies are the most powerful empathy machine in all the arts. When I go to a great movie I can live somebody else's life for a while. I can walk in somebody else's shoes. I can see what it feels like to be a member of a different gender, a different race, a different economic class, to live in a different time, to have a different belief. This is a liberalizing influence on me. It gives me a broader mind. It helps me to join my family of men and women on this planet. It helps me to identify with them, so I'm not just stuck being myself, day after day. The great movies enlarge us, they civilize us, they make us more decent people." - Roger Ebert

How the Daniels Created "Everything Everywhere All At Once"
มุมมอง 5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. Sometimes when making a video I realize that the director’s voice is the most powerful narration I can include. It first happened with my Portrait of a Lady on Fire video, and in this case I saw how great The Daniels are at sharing their thought process and filmmaking techniques. These types of videos are often more challenging since I need to splice together a bun...
Margaret: The Definitive “Main Character Syndrome” Movie
มุมมอง 3.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. Although both versions of Margaret are great, I primarily used footage from the extended cut. This is the version that is closest to Kenneth Lonergan's original vision, and I think it emphasizes a lot of the things I talk about in the video even more (such as the the sound design). Y Tu Mamá También: The Transience of Youth
มุมมอง 71K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. Alfonso Cuarón is my favorite director of all time so I am very excited to finally be releasing a video on one of his movies. Most of his work tackles similar themes and ideas with Y Tu Mamá También being the first entry in this incredible run that he's had in the last 20 years. I wanted to include a discussion about how this movie was also about Cuarón finding his...

The Last of Us Part II: Finding Our Humanity
มุมมอง 41K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers for both The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. Over the past decade, we have seen video games evolve to be a new outlet for cinematic storytelling. The Last of Us series takes us on a journey through the many facets of the human condition, all while offering engaging gameplay and an experience that is hard to forget. After playing Part II, I was left with many ...
Mulholland Drive: Enter the Dreamscape
มุมมอง 7K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. This was definitely a different type of video for me so I'd love to hear what you thought in the comments below! "After a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesiac, she and a perky Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality." Partially inspired by: th-cam.com/video/bsEkG...
Honey Boy: Shia LaBeouf's Act of Forgiveness

This video contains spoilers. Shia's road trip documentary: th-cam.com/video/nb8L5VUZrX0/w-d-xo.html "The story of a child star attempting to mend his relationship with his law-breaking, alcohol-abusing father over the course of a decade, loosely based on Shia LaBeouf’s life." Call Me by Your Name: The Art of Compassion
มุมมอง 61K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. In this video, director Luca Guadagnino and co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer reveal the meaning behind the film Call Me by Your Name. "It's the summer of 1983, and precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman is spending the days with his family at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver, a handsome doctoral student who's working as an i...
Ad Astra: The Journey Out of Depression
มุมมอง 41K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. "Farewell to all that lies behind me, and thank you. To the horizon before me, I will be there. I will be there as my feet permit me. As my soul chases the light few can see. I wonder and wander. I will be there." Every once in a while comes a film that speaks directly to your soul. One that you feel was made for you, and you alone. While it might feel entirely per...
Portrait of a Lady on Fire: The Rise of Desire
มุมมอง 103K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. I wanted to do something different with this video, so I decided that there should be no narration. Instead, I had writer/director Céline Sciamma speak about the film herself. "On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman." None of the music or footage used in this v...

Midsommar: Finding Your Family
มุมมอง 7K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. Out of all the movies that have been released in 2019, Midsommar is the one that has stuck with me the most. It is such a visceral experience that has a surprising amount of humor and beautiful moments. What shocked me the most was how it was able to blend horror and empathy, which is why I set out to make this video. Disclaimer: Some of the footage used is from th...
Moonlight: Empathy, Identity, and Masculinity
มุมมอง 17K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. Moonlight is a decade-defining movie, and I wanted to take a look at how Barry Jenkins crafted this story of empathy, identity, and masculinity. Even as someone who can't directly relate to the characters, I find the film to be incredibly moving. I made this video because I want more people to see Moonlight as a human film that transcends stereotypes and helps us u...
Her: Longing to Connect in the 21st Century
มุมมอง 16K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This video contains spoilers. Her is a film that from was made with so much care and passion by everyone involved. It delves into themes that are extremely relevant in today's world, and I wanted to explore them in this video. We all have a story no one’s in life is ever the same that’s why I’m going to write and direct movies
Even steven
So beautifully done ❤
Just watched this for the first time. Loved!
never seen a movie like this. there is undeniable magic in every scene. from the very first glance I was glued to the screen
Nice 😢😢
4:02 oh dude kudos on mixing movie with your video, esp 8:36 - 9:15
freaking love (legitimately obsessed with) this film. Great video!
Watched this movie again yesterday. When it first came out i didn't enjoy it. But i have watched it a few times over the years and it's one of my favourite films now
Roy’s quote of “he could only see what was not there and missed what was right in front of him” was perfect
The dads monologue at the end really made me more hopeful and also changed my attitude towards life. Life means getting hurt. But letting the feelings of hurt roll through you instead of suppressing them means youll also be able to feel the good feelings that will come again eventually
The physiological journey, the “heroes journey”, is brilliantly done. The science is nonsense but, I guess that doesn’t matter.
It's pretty crazy how he said all the abuse that's shown in here didn't happen. Those are Shia's words. He said his dad spanked him once. Other than that his dad was so loving towards him. He said their relationship was Rocky but not once was his dad not loving towards him. He was always around for him.
Bro you clearly don’t understand what he meant . He said he dramatized the fathers violent tendencies to make himself more sympathetic which hey atleast admitted that . But never once in the movie you don’t think the dad doesn’t love his son, so yeah that guy was still a loving dad
Beautiful… this was beautiful. It literally brought me to tears. This really hit me in a unique special way. Thank you. I am subscribing.
my favorite movie of all time. Good job
I’ve seen this movie a few times I don’t even notice that these are two gay guys I notice two people in the moment falling in love or falling for each other fantastic movie fantastic performances all around
He made the whole thing up.
Very well done, really enjoyed your comments. Pls, where are these two quotes, "Farewell to all…" and "The near future…" from?
Great video man…. Music commentary , it’s excellent
Timothy… so so beautiful in this movie, I was just captivated by his acting
This was great I appreciate the effort you put into this video
This was a beautiful video
I’m really struggling with my attention span and with connecting to art atm (depression, of course.) This analysis made me appreciate and connect with the film more. Thank you!
Hello, I am currently writing my bachelor thesis on this film. do you have the sources for Scammia's statements? that would help me a lot :)
They didn't go to the moon is why they are acting like that. They felt terrible that they were lying to everyone. They were men of honor and were forced to lie
If you had said Scorsese directed this, I would have believed you...those zooms.
This is my nth time i am watching this video. Amazing work.
How heartwarming that he’s found himself to forgiveness given the fact that his dad literally never abused him. He’s admitted publicly to this. He says that the abuse depicted in this film is “fucking nonsense.” I actually can’t believe that I didn’t mention FKA twigs in my comment before. He used this exact passion project to lure her in. As she said, “ it could’ve been anyone.” She was just the one that showed up and seemed right. And that’s because she is soft and vulnerable and full of life. I know his type. Oh yeah, he’s complicated all right. So complicated that he will love me so much that he wants to kill me. Soulmates, yeah? No love like the both of us share? Starcrossed even. And all those people that keep warning me, they don’t understand. Nobody other than the two of us understand. Basically, us against the world. And that’s because us against the world makes us even more “special.“ I’m very glad that Twigs is safe now. y’all should watch the podcast that she put out recently where she talks about everything. And you should watch him admit to everything on camera as well. Why is he trying to deny in court what he’s admitted on camera? Oh, DARVO lol. He just wants to re-traumatize her. What a jerk.
THIS IS A GREAT Film. Take away the relationship between two guys, the whole scope of this beautiful film in more ways than one, captures the essence, and map of the human heart I Love Director Luca D's work, especially this film, shot in his hometown, Luca he sure keeps it real and natural, if this was a story between two women, / straight couple, it will still stand out, for its simplicity in conveying the story. this is the beauty, of a foreign director, instead of an American director, (American directors seem to go over the top as they do in most American flicks) my favorite scene in the flick, Elio with his mum and dad, and with dad, at the end, is just heartwarming and beautiful!

when I was in the darkest place this was the only movie I could tolerate. It is a bs free story.
What you mean when it’s say it’s a bs free story btw, how so?
@@starlord6433 I meant this is not entertainment, this is real and beautiful, it is also about loss, grief, abandonment, betrayal, confronting it all, and letting go.
Per Ardua Ad Astra - through adversity to the stars
10/10 essay
I loved this video!! This movie instantly became one of my all time favorites when I watched it. Also, what’s the song you used at the beginning of the “beach” section?
Just brilliant ❤
Cheers
Fucking amazing video. Well done
Please please does someone know where can I watch this? Can’t find it nowhere 😔
Great analysis man. I love the brian eno song, how do you use that song without getting copy righted from youtube
I get copyright claims on almost all my videos. You’re allowed to use music but any ad revenue goes to the original creator
Ever since I first watched this movie, I made it a habit that I watch this movie every year on 31st August, no matter where I am and what I do. As much as depressing and realistic it is, somehow strangely this movie give me a ray of hope. Indeed there is a tragic beauty in this.
The message to his father the 2nd letter where he spoke from his heart was some of the very best acting I've ever seen Brad Pitt do.
amazing video
BTW, Camilla is the one who is dreaming. She put a hit on the blonde girl who 'sole' the part, and who 'stole' her boyfriend-director. Diane in Camilla's dream represents the girl that she had murdered.
Thank you, grace 💙
Through hardships, to the stars.
I don’t know why he has not won an Oscar .. he puts everything in his role
Well thought out closing remark re her smile
Great essay on a masterpiece. When she's at the jukebox, plays the music, and stares right the camera ... it's the most stunning and sexiest forth wall break ever. It's like she's taking flight from the movie itself to somewhere else, transcendent of the narrative.
She looks right at the audience/us ....me and stares right into my soul. With a full on masterpiece of a song taking you right where she's at. Absolutely stunning!!

the movie feels like the hedgehog dilemma; we all long for warmth but at the cost of hurting ourselves
