The Refurbished Life
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 มี.ค. 2014
Hello, my name’s Crystal! I’m a mom of two, I work in education and refurbish furniture on the side. Some time ago, after refurbishing more furniture for my own home, I decided to give it a go and redo furniture to try and sell! I dove in and had too much fun snatching up all kinds of paint colors, way to many supplies and staging decor. I love trying out new styles and gathering as much info and techniques as I can! I learn something new with every piece I do, usually because I mess up the first time. Hope to share some tips and gather them from you all as well. Thanks for coming along!

How to use a WOOD GRAINING TOOL RUSTIC WOOD paint wash effect
I know I'm a year late to the party... But what did you use on top of the burlap to change the color? Was it the same glaze you used for the top third of the dresser? Just curious as to how you painted the burlap. Thanks! Your work is beautiful
It’s beautiful! A piece of furniture most people would consider trash, you gave new life to. You are truly a professional and very patient when things go wrong. Great job!!! Thanks for sharing the process with us.

@therefurbishedlife I definitely know who to ask if I have any questions, and I just followed you on IG too 🫡.
what if you just use real wood
@@ad2483 True! You could just purchase wooden veneer to attach if the wood is not in good condition like on this project, but veneer is a bit pricey. Much more simple process on nice existing wood though! 👍🏻
or just glue a faux wood foil on it
Total time from start to finish? How many steps does it take.?
@@smartcarfor2 depends on how much depth you want. Technically if you have a base color with great adhesion or primer in it already then you could skip primer then you could just do base color, graining layer, (muting cream color is optional after that) then stain, and topcoat. You could even shorten the stain step if you have a poly+stain combo.
For steps and products watch the full video here!😊👉🏻 th-cam.com/video/a4cdSwvQj6s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vvqULVLwBHeNw7Q2

This is what I need help with the most! How do you get the paint down on the top and then go over it before it starts drying to achieve the cohesive finish?! I wish you would have filmed the whole top being done 😩
@@cookiemarie9960 oh I let the paint dry before applying top coat, but there were a bit of patchy areas which can happen sometimes if the paint is drying too fast and you're trying to lay it down as quick as you can sometimes the texture will come up different in different areas because it didn't have enough drying time to level out evenly, so then it becomes overworked while it's trying to dry. So because of that problem on the top, I laid down the topcoat because that will create an even finish again👍🏻😊 sorry about not filming the whole top, it's a repeat for every section, you work in one strip at a time apply it everywhere on one strip and finish each off by starting at one side of the dresser and not picking it up until you finish on the other side and then touch up any drips on the sides. I always wet the sponge before I use it in the beginning and then wring it out totally, and then apply thin coats, and this will prevent any texture ridges. You should only go over each section to lay it down initially and then go over max once or twice from one side to the other without lifting it up and then move onto the next row. And that way it will prevent it from drying up because once you keep going over an area once it starts drying up you'll create that texture again. This is the method I use on almost all of my furniture tops. I'll link a video here for you to watch the process more if you'd like, hopefully it helps!😊 How To Paint LAMINATE & PARTICLE BOARD|| IKEA Furniture Makeover! th-cam.com/video/01-u-I7vhyc/w-d-xo.html

I’ve watched several of these Anthropologie flower cabinet dupes. I love the dresser too❣️ you are the first to make so many flowers by hand! You are Really so talented I’d love to know what color paint you used on the sides and the wash on the front Beautiful work😍
@@candacewalsh8726 WOW thank you!!💛💛💛That's really kind of you to say, I appreciate that!! That brightened my day😊 For the paint colors, I wish I had exact names for you, but all the paints I used were mistint paints on clearance. For the sides, I used Behr brand in a khaki color, mixed with a brown sample paint to try to get it to a shade that was similar to the wood (and then after that's dry I did random swipes here and there of the lighter color paint that I use on the drawer fronts and the top) Then for the wash, I used a mistinted Benjamin Moore paint in a cream tone mixed with the calcium carbonate to give it that extra chalky finish.
Super cool, but such a shame to invest so much effort into particle board furniture. Doesn't seem like a big leap to do that with something more durable. It looks so good, it's a shame it will be in pieces 5-10 years from now. Maybe that's the way furniture is nowadays. Still super cool what you did.
@@Plazman Thank you!! 😊 I really appreciate that!! You're right, particleboard and MDF don't typically last as long as solid wood depending on who the owner is. The woman who bought this is using it partially as a decorative piece and doesn't have little kids so it will probably last quite a long time😊 My predicament on doing this on solid wood is that people tend to get mad when you paint solid wood furniture haha, it's kind of a win some and lose some thing 😄 I am currently brainstorming this vibe on a solid wood dresser I have though actually! 😊
Is it a chalk paint?
@@tk_404 Hi! Nope, it's not. It's a color called Vermont slate in the Advance line by Benjamin Moore. It's a waterborne Alkyd Enamel, good strong stuff!😊 Here's the full video of that project if you want to take a look at the steps and products! th-cam.com/video/NKIhAhpO2tY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GgTtmhag5TDf43ms

This was absolutely amazing. It gave me so much inspiration! I've been trying to think of how to make more modern furniture have a whimsical or antique vibe. Have you ever done something like this so something from Ikea or Amazon that's very modern?
@@Wistfulfaedream Wow thank you so much!!! That's really kind, I appreciate that!!💛💛 I haven't done this look on IKEA or Amazon furniture, but I think that's a great idea and could definitely be done! Especially if you wanted to give it a Pottery Barn faux wood look over everything if you're working with particle board/MDF furniture, that would really transform it! I do really like to get those basic flat furniture frames (like IKEA/Amazon) when I can snatch them up on FBMP, they're like a nice empty template with tons of possibilities! 😊

@@briemills9209 Thank you!! I appreciate that!! 😊 I used DAS modeling clay meant for sculpting projects, like this. It dries very, very hard. The texture when it dries and the density feels like the faux wood decor on the fronts of old dressers.
