      I have thrown everything at this pack and still going strong a year after this video. For the durability I’m happy to have paid a bit more. Has lasted a lot longer than some of my previous packs. As for looks, it’s not the prettiest thing but it does the job for me.

    Yesss so happy to see this NF fleece get the attention it deserves. Picked one up at the end of last year from Wild Earth with the intention of it being my hiking mid layer though I’ve been wearing it nonstop around home/town too. Totally agree with you about the abrasion resistance of the outer side of the fabric Mowser. Much better than double sided alpha fleece. Just love it. Thinking about getting the matching pants and beanie now too 🤭

    The sleeping naked advice is based on using a bag rated for the correct night temps. The problem it attempts to avoid is sweating in your bag and the moisture reducing the bag effectiveness and your comfort. This advice goes back to the days of cotton and wool clothing. Modern fibers are better at wicking and avoiding moisture staying on your body. Nonetheless, if you must wear more that a t-shirt and u-trou in your bag to stay warm, you are probably using a bag not rated for the night temps.

    I just pitched my portal 2 for the first time and im very thrilled to use it for three weeks in Norway! I have one question about the seams and poles. I don’t get them in the same place, above eachother. I see you have the same “problem”. So, is this actually a problem or should I rock it likes this? Can’t freaking wait to use it in the mountains!!

    • @mowsertas
      @mowsertas 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I haven’t found it to be a problem as long as you have the fly attached to the poles correctly you should be ok. I was in Norway this time last year. So jealous! Can’t wait to get back there and do some longer hikes. Such an amazing place!

    I have a portal 2, likewise a strong tent. I like the modularity ie you could take just a bathtub floor, no mesh to save weight if mosquitoes are not an issue ( you need the mesh version against midges in Scotland in the summer!) If dry you could set up mesh only or fly only with ground sheet.

    I bought some canvas gaiters back in highschool from a company I can't search for cause they don't seem to have survived into the internet age. I can't read the label anymore. Somewhere along the line the hook side of the Velcro crumbled into dust and the elastic is all shot, but the press studs still work fine. I replaced the elastic loop at the top with chord. Seems to work fine. Solves the snapback issue. Semi-given up on replacement of the loop under the boot, as it seems more hassle getting things tangled in the chords than occasionally having to turn the gaiters back around a little to face forward, when I'm around polite company.

    HI Mowser, I have enjoyed your reviews on Beta AR. In the videos, you have described that even after rough and tough adventures, your Beta AR still shines as the day you got it. I wonder if it is true on appearance or look of the Jacket. Does the jacket still look new as the day you bout it? Please, let me know. Just in case if my words are insufficient, let me tell you point of my question. First, I am just a fan of Arcteryx jackets. I wear Beta AR in town. I love my jacket so much and would like to learn how to keep my jacket look so new. You have shown me an awesome video on how to wash and maintain the jacket that I really appreciate. In the video and today's video, as you described, your Beta AR looks as fresh and nice as you just bought it. So, I would like to know the secret if there is any. That is my point. And if I would apologize if I made you uncomfortable with my first comment. I am Japanese and not very familiar with your culture and proper communication. Thank you for reading.

    • @mowsertas
      @mowsertas 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, Thanks for watching my videos! Yes, my Beta AR jacket still looks almost new. It really does not show any sign of wear or tear and does look very much like new. I only use it for big trips and expeditions (maybe gets 4-8 weeks full time use per year), and use other jackets for around the city and shorter trips, which helps reduce wear. I clean it maybe once per year and there really is no specific secret. When not in use i hang it in my wardrobe and ensure it is never stored crumpled or stuffed in a bag. Hope this helps! I love Japan and have travelled there on a few occasions. I need to go back! Thanks for watching! Best, Mowser

    Thanks for another informative video. What are your thoughts on snake proofing? There are several brands of "snake tested" gaiters on the market, and there is some commentary around that gaiters like the Sea to Summit do not really provide protection against snake bite. As you said, snakes are an issue here in Australia. It would be reassuring to know if the gaiters one buys are effective against snake bite or not.

    • @mowsertas
      @mowsertas 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching! I have never really looked into the 'snake proofing' label. My quagmires feel pretty darned tough and I personally think would offer enough protection in Tassie. Snakes here are pretty poor at getting their venom in especially when there is a garment layer and not plain naked skin. Might be a different story for mainland Brown snakes and the like though. I'll have a bit more of a look into this now though so thanks for the comment!

    Very helpful! I often wondered about stowing my down bag compressed. I always have due to not having enough room in my closet and it always lofted back up just fine. I do that with my jackets as well with no issues. About breathing into your air mattress! It is good the hear it does not cause mold if you dry it out properly, but what about the myth that blowing into your pad during the winter will cause the moisture in your breath to freeze and make you cold during the night?😮

    REI Half Dome 2SL can handle 2 adults comfortably but it is heavy relative to other tents.

      Thanks! The shirt is made by a Norwegian brand called Norrona. I absolutely love their gear! The model i'm wearing is calle the Svalbard Flannel shirt. Older model so only available in their online outlet here now i think: www.norrona.com/en-GB/loyalty/?referralCode=LO0A2XLPX2

      I have looked online at the Atom Packs. While I haven’t tried one I really like the look of them. Have considered purchasing.

    Down can withstand a lot of compression, synthetic bags less (that at least used to be the case). Of course, sleeping naked in the bag isn't warmer, but adding too many layers isn't ideal either if you add so much volume that the insulation get compressed. I've seen a lot of "two person" tents and you can fit two average sized people in all of them, but not necessarily two extra wide pads.

    • @wobblysauce
      @wobblysauce 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      And not wearing cotton, as most night garments were.

    • @frstesiste7670
      @frstesiste7670 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The anti-cotton-on-trail movement is exaggerating the disadvantages in my opinion. Cotton actually was fairly common as the fabric inside sleeping bags at least until sometime in the eighties and was also used extensively in outdoor jackets and pants until GoreTex and other "waterproof-breathable" took over. Cotton on the inside of a sleeping bag is heavier than synthetic fabrics, but also feel less clammy. Heavier is of course a disadvantage, but better feel is also important. It will absorb moisture, but for me getting the sleeping bag wet is just something I avoid. I have sleeping bags with synthetic inners now but use a cotton (not necessarily 100%) t-shirt as camp/town/sleep clothes in most situations. It's comfortable, don't smell and has worked without problems on thruhikes of the AT, PCT and lots of other trips. I normally don't use it while hiking and wouldn't bring cotton on a pure winter trip, but down to around freezing it works just fine for evening/sleep.

      For me even at home most of my items are not cotton. But yes there is a band range where it is fine and other materials work just the same but I think it is the outer limits where it is the main difference.

    I really enjoyed this, thank you. I mostly agree about tent sizes...but our Exped Venus II fits my husband and I pretty well. Inner width is 130cm and we don’t have 25 inch wide pads. Having a vestibule each is great.

    Very good video. A mesh base layer eh! that takes me back 20 -25 years and, let say some nightclubs? Just shows there is nothing new. I used to blow up my pads, but now use a little flextail pump, so much easier. I've always wondered about the sleeping bag storage one, it never did seem to make total sense. Also a new sub.

    My Lanshan 2 tent definitely sleeps 2 people. Vestibules for gear undercover and heaps of headroom. I bought it for my solo trips but it’s way too big and have used it 2 people as well. I do understand that many tents are very tight with stated capacity but things seem to be changing with manufacturers

    Excellent video as always. I want to offer you a challenge! Imagine you just got into overnight hiking. You have gone through the initial couple of overnight hikes by borrowing gear, and now you have caught the bug. You have $1500 AUS to create your loadout. What will you buy . A few details, you can buy second hand but it has to be something you can actually find, and it has encompass a full kit. Sleep, tent, bag, cookware, first aid, electronics and clothing. Would love to see what you come up with.

      @mowsertas LoL, I initially had $1000 and right at the end, and though, nah, even with second hand, that's bloody hard, mainly because I added clothing in the line-up. Good luck, and I really can't wait to see what you come up with. Mainly to criticise. 🤣

    I've always wanted a hot totty when very cold at the end of the day though I imagine that having one wouldn't help with weariness. A hot toddy is quite another matter.
