At 55:00 'Initial Spells' refers to the initial spells in the MU's spellbook NOT spells that they know per day. 'Bonus Spells' on the previous page allows extra spells based on high INT. I think your reading it wrong, bad text heading does not help, IMHO.

Its cool seeing you guys compare game fold to higher end tables. Especially as I feel like I came to game fold the opposite way as I was exclusively looking at folding tables for war games like the Alpha game table before I found out about game fold. Needless to say, the cool rail system game fold offers blows all the competing folding tables I was looking at before it out of the water.

I have been wondering about the Wilderness Wandering Monsters Tables by level. Those make no sense if they are not sorted by climate and terrain - and this is a major design flaw. Imagine, you are on your way in a boreal forest and you meet ... 5 Brigands in the morning and ... a gang of baboons (most likely not the runequest-1e-type...). After being healed and leveling up, the party leaves the Keep the other week and they meet... a Giant Crab on their way through the foothills of a mountain range, a crocodile while they are on the pass over the mountains and are surprised by several Chimps during their night watch. Those tables are not really usable - as an experienced DM I know what to do with those, picking some of those creatures for my 8-entry random table and assigning possibilities for those encounters. (Like they are shown for the hexcrawl example... pretty standard) But those are made for rolling on them, by level. So - applying traditional D&D-logic - I'd roll for random encounters several times a day and during the watches. If one happens, for 1st lvl characters, the encounter would be Level 1 on 1-3, Level 2 on 4-5 and Level 3 on a 6. But without Terrain, those tables don't make any sense. They are sorted alphabetically, and rolled by 1d20, not 2d10 or 1d8+d12. So all those monsters have the same possibility to appear, the graph is linear, not a Gauss curve. Maybe I have overlooked it, but a newbie DM may not be able to make any reasonable use of those tables. He might even come up with the conception to use them like the Dungeon Wandering Monsters Tables as I discribed above. TBH, my group would be very puzzled encountering creatures rolled up randomly by them and question my sanity as a DM... Ah, and those carousing rules ... well, my group of 14 to 17 year old boys came up with similar rules back in the 90s. I think they infantile and murder-hobo-ish. Not funny at all for me. This is where my inner presby kicks in and my own conservatism and tradional values come into play. Debauchery and dissipation are not my cup of tea... I am not evangelical, but... I did a flip through myself now, and besides the 2/3 - 3/4 of really great art, the game is not that special, it is good, I like the take on the Monk, most of the FAQ, Sage Advice etc in the Appendix is good. 4 stars for it are fair. But it is massively overpriced compared to its competitors. And those are other B&W POD games, not stitch sewn offset hardcovers like OSE or Hyperborea. Dragonslayer competes with Advanced Lablord, Osric, ACKS or Swords and Wizardry. Maybe even 1e or the RC. Example: For the 80$ (without shipping) you can get ACKS (which is printed in the Standard Color Process) and two of its more expensive accessories. Or Advanced Lablord, plus a whole campaign setting and city books. Osric (layflat or PB) gives you the whole Bone Hilt Sword campaign and some Starter adventures, or two Advanced Adventures tomes (Nr. 2 and 3 are fair for the start) etc. Dragonslayer is just to expensive by comparison. To me, the best deals are Basic Fantasy (for 80$ you get almost the whole library...), Iron Falcon, Osric or Intruders! (which is a White Box clone with a massive random tables section). When the new Monstrosities is out, S&W will become a great deal too. S&W complete and Splinters of Faith for example. Great. (the new White Box cannot compete with FMAG for 5$ though...)

Thanks so much for your comment. You have a really great point about the Wandering Monsters tables: If it's not broken up by terrain, it is quite unwieldy to work with. That will certainly be a point of frustration, and not just for new DMs. As for price, I think it is directly comparable to Old School Essentials Advanced Fantasy, which is two tomes that seek to do a lot of what Dragonslayers seeks to do: use B/X as the foundation and incorporate desired elements of AD&D. That product is two tomes for $40 (i.e. 2 x $40 = $80), making it the same price as Dragonslayer. However, with Dragonslayer, the look of the books is more classic and the art is better and more consistent, and even features original TSR artists (Jeff Easley, Darlene, Diesel, Eric Hotz, and Yann Lieby). It also has a dungeon creation section from a seasoned megadungeon creator. Considered next to OSE, I think that Dragonslayer holds its value. I guess we could consider them both to be more on the premium product side of the market, both being on the expensive end of the spectrum. (People who go for OSE or Dragonslayer are looking for different things than those who go with Basic Fantasy. And there is a massive difference in price, although both sell because both meet unique market needs/desires.) As for carousing, I largely agree with your sentiment there. I play with my kids, too, so I would want to keep debauchery to a minimum, although there might be some place for it if it is tasteful. And I'm sure it would elicit some laughs from them if done well. But mostly, I'm not too interested in the idea of blowing all your gold on silliness. I much rather like the idea of building towards a stronghold like classic B/X and BECMI. I think I would still instill that in my players regardless of the fact that it's not explicitly part of the Dragonslayer ruleset. In fact, I have in my play worlds established a pretty clearly-defined banking system where players can deposit treasure safely and manage their wealth. Thanks again for your comment, and thanks for watching!

@@DnD_Dad_n_Son If Dragonslayer was printed in the Premium Digital process by dtrpg, it would be a direct competitor to OSE, pricewise. But it is the least print- and paper quality, like OSRIC (HC 19EUR, PB 12EUR, Layflat 16EUR) or Advanced Lablord (HC 2x23EUR, PB 2x18EUR). ACKS costs 32EUR as HC and has color printing, which is much better. The casecover binding cannot compare to a sewn binding, it is just a Perfect Bound book glued into the hardcover. The paper connecting case and book will wear out very soon from regular use, maybe even faster than the much criticized 1e hardcovers from back in the days. So the Perfect Bound books are actually of a better quality and cheaper than the Casecovers. They don't rip out of the case. Regarding the BW inkjet process (which is very blurry compared to the digital process or offset prints) and the inferior binding, this book cannot compete with the OSE Advanced Books (where you pay for for TWO sewn-binding hardcovers, not a single book, which is much more expensive of course! Quality has its price). One remark why I am so concerned about the price: I paid 35EUR each Advanced OSE and no shipping, because the books are available at some online stores in Germany (or Europe) where I live. If I order Books from Drivethrurpg, I have to add 16EUR/20$ for shipping and the Import Taxes because it is shipped from the UK. This is included regarding Lablord, Osric etc which I can order at Lulu because they print and ship from France. UPS charged an extra 18EUR for handling my last order, so if I add it all together, its 73EUR +16EUR +6EUR +18EUR ------------------- 113EUR = $120 for me. So the price is going up WAY over 100EUR - for one POD of suboptimal printing and minor binding quality! There is no other way than drivethru to purchase it yet, and I doubt it will ever be added to Amazons POD service, which is available in Germany. That's where I got my BFRP, Osric, S&W, Iron Falcon etc. books from. Therefor I only buy bigger numbers of books from drivethru - if I do so! I just have to pay the handling once. 10EUR shipping from Lulu without handling fees or no shipping at all from Amazon POD makes a difference. And Amazon does only take 2 working days to deliver the books...

@@DnD_Dad_n_Son Ah, on premium products... If I want to sell a premium product for a premium price, the quality of the physical product has to match the price and content. After watching several videos featuring GEG, I think he unjustifiably overestimates himself and his products. This may be great marketing-wise (and he wants to sell his books...), but I don't fall for that. I feel like there are reasonable arguments against different statistics between the sexes; one, I am thinking of could be "Is the difference between a man and a woman greater than or equal the difference between, say, a Human and a Dwarf?" Personally, I say probably not. But the argument that, well, it's just sexist to recognize the concept... I feel holds little water. ... Or game balance as you brought up. But see, for this edition of D&D, ability scores being super high wasn't *too* impactful... Well, there was leveling faster and a little bit extra damage-or was it to-hit modifiers-but nowhere near as it is today. ... Changing Charisma to Beauty... That strikes me as odd. It is sort of a callback to Braunstein where beauty was an attribute... But at the same time, I feel charisma can adequately represent both personality *and* comelyness just fine. ... I mean, I feel I am just repeating what you're saying here: the problem isn't that this would make an objectively good game; rather, if you wanted to simulate a realistic world, changes akin to this aren't ludicrous ideas.

So I run a game that is similar to D&D but not. The game I play has different characteristics and all races / species have a baseline of what characteristics they have there's no rolling for stats. Character creation goes through and you get to add three points to any of these nine statistics. They also have a maximum cap depending upon your level and there are three levels of gameplay. What I have done and my wife agrees with me is that men have a higher capacity of strength of physique and women have a higher capacity of agility and perception. Those are four out of the nine ability characteristics in the game which you can place points into. This means that there will be men that will be as strong as women but there will be a few men that will be stronger than the women. The opposite side of that is that the women might be just as perceptive as men but some women will have a higher capacity of being more perspective than men. I think that balances the game really well and it highlights the strengths of our two genders.

yeah its kinda sexist. modern players do not view the stats as something connected to a “biological reality” as there is no such thing in fantasy. they’re stats in a game we’re playing together so if you want to be physically powerful you shouldnt have to play a man in the game like you should in real life. it’s just lame nerd shit to get stuck in the weeds like that. same principle behind groups ignoring food/water/ammo etc after a certain point in a campaign. thats as simply as i can put it for my pov. i don’t care how you play at your table and i don’t think you’re a sexist for using the system the way you want, but i do believe the system is sexist in a simply fun ruining way for women. that doesnt make the people playing it sexist. if thats the game you want, i just hope your players do too!

@@DnD_Dad_n_SonIn Daddy Rolled a 1---I think context is important. He is running a game for his daughters, so he is especially sensitive to sexism in the game---as he should be to be honest. If I was running a game for pre-teen and teen age girls, I probably would forgo the strength restrictions if they rolled that well. Do I think the differences as presented in AD&D are especially odious? Not at all. Yes, there's a difference between an 18/50 and an 18/00 strength, and it's a significant one. But how many male fighters wind up with an 18/00? My players are all adults and they know I want a greater degree of realism in the game world, and I have two feminists at the table who are just fine with it. Your video is amazing! I had the same reaction when i saw the DRA1 video and i like your and your kid's take on the issues. This second guessing what people did 50 years ago or 250 years ago is ignorant and wrong. Yours is my new favorite channel!! Please keep at it!

I'm still not sold on the OSR stuff. I played Basic (1991 black box) D&D, 1e, 2e, 3.x and 4e. While I liked the way AD&D (can't really speak to Basic I played it only briefly) did some things, and I do love the simplicity that I've seen from B/X (and BECMI), I can't stand the whole "life is cheap, so your character is expendable" mindset where you are discouraged from really coming up with background or anything if you can die easily in the first combat. That's never been fun. Same with the plethora of save or die spells (poison traps spring to mind) or "here's 30 goblins, so you don't want to necessarily fight them" approach to encounters (note: SOMETIMES this is fine. Having it be a frequent thing is not) design that's still rooted in Chainmail's "just bring a small army to fight them" mindset which has never been a thing in any sort of fantasy genre or literature (including the stuff Gygax even lists as his inspiration for AD&D which is almost always 1-3 characters, not a big group with retainers and henchmen and hired mercenaries). Still I love hearing about things that try to bring back the old-school even if I have issues with some of how it works. Great video, nonetheless! I might have to take a second look at this one.

A few questions: What board is that you are using? Did you laminate your DM screen?

The board is a Melee Mats board. It has squares on one side and hexes on the other. It's the kind that are stiff and it folds into fours like a game board. Yes, I laminated the DM screen after purchasing the PDF version, then taped them together with transparent packing tape. But after all that, the cost wasn't a whole lot less than just buying the DM screen anyway. I probably only saved about $4.

So, I read much about the game. I heard much about the author, which was unpleasant at the least, but I don't judge a person or their products just because of their political opinions. I didn't care for when it came to Gary or Dave, I didn't do so for other osr stuff. I am from Germany and p&p rpgs are mostly neutral ground, with different ages of players tending more to one game or another. That said, I was shocked about the hard cultural clash and the infighting within the American community of rpgs in general and especially the osr. The discourse extremely ideologically biased, people do not talk to each other, but about each other. So many talented creators contributing to the hobby, but bitter adverseries. So sad. I listened to a few interviews with Dr Gillespie and was surprised to hear the same negativity in every single video or podcast. What's going on in America? OK, I don't want to judge anyone as a person, but I I'm sure he and I would depart ways very soon if we played at the same table. Just would not work cordially. But, what I asked myself beyond personal issues concerning style and politics : why would I want to buy this retro clone. The pdf alone is 30€, the pod 80+taxes and shipping. Other games have free or very modest priced pdfs so I can dig in and see if I like it. Or they have very usable quick start rules, which allow me to check it out if the game works for me and my party. What makes this ruleset stand out, compared to others like S&W, which has an outstanding cover too, Advanced Lablord, OSE, Iron Falcon, Lamentations, Osric or Gold&Glory et al. Or the tsr RC, the 1e and 2e rules. For the price of the single rulebook one can get the whole portfolio with dozens of adventures of basic fantasy, delivery on the same or next day... OK, Bf doesn't have Easley covers, and the interior art happens to have quality issues. But many other professional games are way less expensive, like Dragonbane or The Dark Eye, and have extraordinary art. And are linen bound, not pod quality. So, I am reasoning why should I get this book?

I actually agree a lot with Greg politically, and we're unified in the fight against creeping, soul-destroying Marxism. For me, my family cherishes God, Family, and Country, all of which Marxism seeks to destroy. I am against it vehemently, with every breath in my body; it is not a matter of live and let live. The Marxists have started an ideological war which they intend to win, and if freedom-loving people cherish their liberty then we must fight against it. Regarding the question of why buy Dragonslayer: It is a different type of product from the Rules Cyclopedia and AD&D, as it is a hybrid between them, but presented in a format that is much easier to digest. It would be more of a direct competitor to Advanced Labyrinth Lord and Advanced OSE. Labyrinth Lord seems to have been forsaken by its author (who is woke/Marxist anyway, which would give me pause), and if you consider the price for Advanced OSE (i.e. 2 x USD$40), it is actually the same as Dragonslayer (i.e. USD$80), except that Dragonslayer is altogether in one book and has much better and more consistent art (the monster section particularly shines over OSE), plus it has the look & feel of TSR D&D. It also has a really good dungeon design section from the megadungeon maestro, as well as adventure design and other sections that are helpful to play. I really love OSE, but I do recognize that Greg has created something really special.

@@DnD_Dad_n_Son As I wrote, I am from Germany. I just want to point out how I perceive the situation around here (Germany, Europe). I am a centrist and I am sceptical of this sort of cultural clashes or even wars. This is escalates and even if I am not a snowflaky type, I doubt this is wholesome to the hobby itself. I am not sure what is seen as "woke" or "marxist" in the US. Even our conservatives are aware of social issues, accept universal health care (which we pay for, but everyone has to have some kind of insurance...) and workers rights for example, even our left parties accept the system of private property of means of productions (well, some parties which get 0,1% in nation wide elections don't, but those are irrelevant ...). LGBTIA+ rights are protected by federal law here, and it has been legal for over 40 years to change ones legal gender and name, we also have gay marriage for many years. Ones religion isn't a priority in politics and nations don't matter that much either - if I go 250km by car, I can drive through three or maybe even four different countrys (Germany, Netherland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France), same for federal states of my own country. It is all more diverse and tightly packed around here. As for "marxism" and "wokeness" - I consider them mostly buzzwords. Even our left parties (beyound those extrmists, gettin 0,1% in elections...) aren't "marxist" by ideology - or it doesn't matter in actual policies. There is even permeability between our Left Party and the Liberal Democrates when it comes to representatives, which are usually antagonist. I cannot say how many people actually studied Marxism among US representatives, or in the population (neither do I in Germany btw). I studied it because I am a political scientist, but I also studied theories from antiquity, middle ages, early new modern age etc. That's my one of my fields of study. I am still not sure what led to the strong bipolarity in the US. Religion is much more intertwined with the state here for example, but it doesn't matter 90% or more at all usually, while in the US, individual pov on secularity and personal faith are much more involved - or are displayed in public. The both representatives of my constituency are heavily involved in their church (catholic, presbyterian - she is even member of their synod...) and openly talk about it, but when it comes to their work in the parliaments, this is not the most prominent thing at all. When it comes to RPGs, we also aware of issues and the most prominent german games (The Dark Eye, Midgard) work with Profession/Charactertype, Ancestry/Species (like human, dwarf, elf etc) and cultures. But this isn't something new for us, we have this since the 80s or 90s, I have to look this up for actual years. But german RPGs tend to be very simulationist and skillbased. Those games are played even by younger kids (my daughter started playing D&D at the age of 10, but started playing The Dark Eye at the age of 13, my first RPG was Midgard 2e when I was 13 and I went to the then much less complex Dark Eye 1e a view months later, and to BECMI and later AD&D) Dark Eye and Midgard are now in their 5th Edition for over a decade, Midgard "leveling up" to 6th Edition this year. While Dark Eye is the more politically progessive game and Midgard more conservative, both of them don't use terms like "race" or "class". This is just not a thing here. But you say in your video, people didn't want to play with gamers who play this way. We do so in Runequest since the early 90s as well when the 3rd Edition was published. For me it is most interesting how much gaming cultures and social ecosystems are in the RPG communites (I am a political scientist after all...) are different elsewhere and I am curious about this. But those seemingly unbridgable rifts did shock me, in their tone and intensity. Very much they and them, with the middle ground squashed inbetween. As for me, I think there has to be a space for live and let live, and I have points where I agree with the one or the other side. Esp. because sides say, there is liberty/freedom at risk. This can't be - so there has to be a completely different issue and conflict. And it is on a personal level, it is a matter of authority and of identity. One could write much about this and I hope many academics of cultural science will do so... As far as I have read from the maker of Labyrinth Lord, the game hasn't been for sale, but Gillespie wanted him to sell it to him anyway and they had a row. Advanced OSE is almost the same price like Dragonslayer, that's right. But their books aren't PODs, they are offset print, so of better quality. I got those for 35Eur each, while Dragonslayer costs almost 100EUR incl. VAT, import and shipping - as a POD. Hyperborea costs that much, for both linen bound tomes; Advanced Lablord is only 33EUR (POD), so I could get modules, settings etc for it for the same price. What I have seen of Dragonslayer in pagethrough videos did not really convince me of the book so much that I would buy it... What puzzled me was that Dr. Gillespie has his students buy his books to review them. Around here, this can be the case too, but we have reduced prices for students if they go to the professors office and get a stamped document so they don't have to pay the VAT. Or a student gets that back at the end of the year when they do their annual tax return. Things seem to be handled differently ... But the times have changed in Germany too since the 90s and I am no longer a teacher at the University anymore.

Call me a heretic, but I 100% disagree with the statement from Gygax in the beginning. Role-playing absolutely is storytelling. You don't have to completely railroad the players, but open sandbox games are IMHO boring. There should be some semblance of a plot, just the plot can change (although I find too many players purposely try to wreck the story)

A potential house rule to explore: DCC's Mighty Deeds mechanic is an inspired means to unlock Raw creativity at the game table, without endless mini game feats of 3.5.... The cleave mechanic here is approaching this degree of freedom, but I ask: WHY throttle back your fighter's with limitations when the Mighty deed has been play tested to actually work at the table and is wildly fun .... and an OSR means to empower players to problem solve as it the OSR vibe...
