This sounds good. Greg's early d&d experiences are similar to my own. The Monk looks exactly as I pictured he would've looked back in the day. I always thought of him as a medieval type of monk and never realized he was supposed to be an Eastern style monk, so this version is spot on to me!

The video answered my questions. I'll be running Dragonslayer in the future.

We were playing the same way as a Hodgepodge of B/X and AD&D... We used the simplicity of B/X and added AD&D adding flavor we liked to the game.

Ludwig von Mises? Wasn't expecting that! Awesome, and great job raising your kids right! Tell him to read Rothbard next...❤

Currently he's reading three intro books to economics that I've recommended to him: "Essentials of Economics" by Faustino Ballve, "The Concise Guide to Economics" by Jim Cox, and of course, "Economics in One Lesson" by Henry Hazlitt! I have "Man, Economy and the State with Power and Market" on my shelf as well (of course!) but I'll have to whet his appetite first and work up to that. Got "Human Action," lots by Hayek, and many others, too. I think Rothbard's "Anatomy of the State" would be a great one to get him to think, too. That one's on the shelf as well.

@@DnD_Dad_n_Son Also, a great introductory primer that came out recently is "How to Think About the Economy" by Per Bylund. I think both of you would like that. For anyone else that is curious about the way the world REALLY works, and why humans do what they do, then all of these books would be a great start. Again, kudos🤩 D&D Dad!

I'm still not sold on the OSR stuff. I played Basic (1991 black box) D&D, 1e, 2e, 3.x and 4e. While I liked the way AD&D (can't really speak to Basic I played it only briefly) did some things, and I do love the simplicity that I've seen from B/X (and BECMI), I can't stand the whole "life is cheap, so your character is expendable" mindset where you are discouraged from really coming up with background or anything if you can die easily in the first combat. That's never been fun. Same with the plethora of save or die spells (poison traps spring to mind) or "here's 30 goblins, so you don't want to necessarily fight them" approach to encounters (note: SOMETIMES this is fine. Having it be a frequent thing is not) design that's still rooted in Chainmail's "just bring a small army to fight them" mindset which has never been a thing in any sort of fantasy genre or literature (including the stuff Gygax even lists as his inspiration for AD&D which is almost always 1-3 characters, not a big group with retainers and henchmen and hired mercenaries).
Still I love hearing about things that try to bring back the old-school even if I have issues with some of how it works. Great video, nonetheless! I might have to take a second look at this one.

This seems like seamless interwoven B/X & AD&D, which I think Dragonslayer will be my OSR game of choice. Are all the monsters located inside? or do other Monster supplements work with it?

I know you already got your question answered, but just for individuals who may be curious: There is a comprehensive monster section in the book, and each monster has its own picture! In addition, Greg also sells the Megadungeon Monster Manual, which has additional monsters which are not in the core book.

Not sure if Greg reads this, but your Carousing Tables immediately made me think of Knight of the North. Is that the inspiration? I feel like we used to play with those tables, many an Inn was burned down.

What monster Manuals would Dragonslayer be compatible with? The Creature Catalogue? AD&D MM & MM2? Or does it use THAC0? I plan on getting this hardcover, and I'm wondering which AC type it uses.

I'm glad you got your answers! Just for other viewers who might be curious: Dragonslayer is compatible with the Creature Catalogue, AD&D, etc. without much modification. It does use THACO, although THACO starts at 20 instead of 19, for ease of calculation.

A potential house rule to explore: DCC's Mighty Deeds mechanic is an inspired means to unlock Raw creativity at the game table, without endless mini game feats of 3.5....
The cleave mechanic here is approaching this degree of freedom, but I ask: WHY throttle back your fighter's with limitations when the Mighty deed has been play tested to actually work at the table and is wildly fun .... and an OSR means to empower players to problem solve as it the OSR vibe...

01:34:00 - There does not appear to be any good reason to give the Magic-User more spells than the Illusionist. Same armor, same weapons, same hp, same xp chart, etc..

The Politics talk was fine, because the point is no one should be shoving their political agenda into a game. Thats what Wotc been doing, & it keeps getting worse.

100% I am getting this soon, but its why I am all in with OSR stuff plus you can run countless mods that have been put out over the last 50 years and are still made with little to no changes. I also like Shadowdark really damn cool.
