The Queen of Argyll - by Silly Wizard - live performance with notes & lyrics
This lovely song written and sung here by the late Andy M. Stewart (1952-2015) was recorded at a live performance by the Scottish folk band Silly Wizard on October 7, 1983 at Harvard University's Sanders Theater in Cambridge, MA before an audience of 1200+ people who gave a standing ovation at the end.
The performance was first released on the Silly Wizard LP album and audio cassette "Live in America" in 1985. That LP album was distributed in the UK by REl Records (RELS 476) and in the US by Green Linnet (LIS 3036). This live recording of the song was also included on the 1988 Silly Wizard cd "Live Wizardry" issued by Green Linnet, and on the 2002 edition of the cd compilation "The Rough Guide to Scottish Music" issued by the World Music Network. It was later remastered (the version in this video) and released in 2012 on the Silly Wizard LP album and cd "Live Again."
Performers are Andy M. Stewart (lead vocals, tenor banjo, whistles), Phil Cunningham (accordion, whistle, keyboards, cittern, vocals), Johnny Cunningham (fiddle, vocals), Martin Hadden (electric bass, acoustic guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Gordon Jones (acoustic guitar, bodhran, vocals).
Argyll (or Agyle or Argyllshire) is a historic shire (or county) on the west coast of Scotland. It did not have its own king or queen. So, the "queen" in the song refers to the particular dictionary sense of "A woman eminent in rank, power, or attractions; the highest of her kind;" The reference to "In the place of noble thinkers of scholars ..." no doubt refers to the venerable University of Glasgow which dates from 1451. The city of Glasgow in Scotland in the United Kingdom is just outside of what was the shire of Argyll. Noted Scottish inventor James Watt (1736-1819) worked at the University of Glasgow.
LYRICS
Gentlemen it is me duty
To inform you of one beauty
Though I'd ask of you a favour
Not to seek her for a while
Though I own she is a creature
Of character and feature
No words can paint the picture
Of the Queen of all Argyll
Refrain:
And if you could have seen her there
Boys, if you had just been there
The swan was in her movements
And the morning in her smile
All the roses in the garden
They bow and ask her pardon
For not one could match the beauty
Of the Queen of all Argyll
On the evening that I mentioned
I passed with light intention
Through a part of our dear country
Known for beauty and for style
In the place of noble thinkers
Of scholars and great drinkers
But above them all for splendour
Shone the Queen of all Argyll
(Refrain)
So my lads I needs must leave you
My intention's not' to grieve you
Nor indeed would I deceive you
Oh I'll see you in a while
I must find some way to gain her
To court her and attain her
I fear my heart's in danger
From the Queen of all Argyll

Lanigan's Ball - The Bards - live performance, lyrics & notes
มุมมอง 3.4Kปีที่แล้ว
This is the complete cut of this live performance with dialog and music before and after the song. It is from the 1980 Polydor Records compilation on vinyl entitled Another Feast of Irish Folk. At that time The Bards consisted of Diarmuid O'Leary (guitar, vocals), Ann Keaveney (vocals) and Christy Sheridan (mandolin). My previous upload of this was a truncated version recorded off the radio. Th...
My Last Farewell to Stirling - Battlefield Band - with lyrics & notes
มุมมอง 225ปีที่แล้ว
This a lovely, nostalgic, sad, traditional Scottish song dating from the 19th century. There are different versions of the lyrics. The Battlefield Band notes: "The theme of the transportation ballad My Last Farewell to Stirling is a fairly common one and the tune can be found in various guises in Scotland and Ireland. The version we use here comes from Australia." The connection to Australia is ...
Lanigan's Ball (The Bards) - live performance
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This performance captures very successfully the humor of this traditional song using one of the slowest tempos of the many recordings of it. It is on the Another Feast of Irish Folk album released by Polydor in 1980. Thanks to Cathy Price for identifying the album. I recorded this music (truncated near the start) off of a Boston radio station in the 1980s. It is a live performance by The Bards ...
The Broken Down Squatter by Scartaglen (1986) with lyrics
มุมมอง 1.9K11 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a beautiful, haunting, wistful ballad that I recorded off the radio in the 1980s. Of the various versions I have heard, I find this one by far the most enchanting. It is performed by the Kansas City-based Celtic group Scartaglen from their 1986 LP "The Middle Path" (as a viewer below first brought to my attention). The ballad is based on a poem first published in the "Queenslander" in 1...
When I Was A Fair Maid - Triona ni Dhomhnaill
มุมมอง 34K12 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a little tribute to the incomparable Irish harpsichordist & singer, Tríona ní Dhomhnaill, using her rendition of "When I Was A Fair Maid". This lively & humorous song from Tríona's 1984 self-titled cd album (originally a 1975 vinyl album) has been performed by others, but I prefer her version by far. The lyrics below are from the booklet that came with the cd with minor corrections, mos...
McShane -- John Leonard & John Squire (1976) -- lyrics in video
มุมมอง 3.1K12 ปีที่แล้ว
This a delightful ballad that I have long liked & had only on tape from a recording I made off the radio. Later I found it posted by knibscratch on YT. My vid uses his soundtrack from the LP for which I thank him very much. The lyrics I have diagnosed from the recording & by using the lyrics of "Bold McShane" (which are nearly the same but have an extra stanza & differ a little in many places)....
Another Time -- Pearls Before Swine -- Tom Rapp - lyrics in description
มุมมอง 62K12 ปีที่แล้ว
A nugget, a magnificently haunting melody with lyrics to match, from that golden era for music, the late 60's Another Time is said to be the first song written by Tom Rapp, whose distinctive voice is perfect for this song. I have used images here that I felt fit the mood of this piece. I own no copyright to the music, lyrics or images. Lyrics are below. Where have you been to? Where did you go?...
Escape Wavefold by The Chemical Brothers -- Hanna movie soundtrack
มุมมอง 3.3K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a small salute to courageous, fearless women everywhere (be they agile Saoirse or statuesque Angelina) inspired by the 2011 movie Hanna (with Saoirse Ronan & Cate Blanchett). The movie has stirring music by The Chemical Brothers. The piece here is featured during an escape scene & is appropriately titled Escape Wavefold. Women featured in my upload are primarily Saoirse Ronan, Olivia Wi...

Tami-itis by Sex Execs
มุมมอง 12K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a wonderful, relatively obscure song done by the Boston band Sex Execs. It is on their self-titled 12 inch album released in 1982. I have re-posted this video with an improved soundtrack and some changes to the slideshow images. I hold no copyrights to the music or the images.
Boy Detective - Lou Miami & the Kozmetix
มุมมอง 2K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an excerpt of a relatively rare song done in 1979 by the Boston area group Lou Miami [1956-1995] and the Kozmetix. It is rare because it was never released for sale. As a demo tape it was broadcast on radio stations in the Boston area where I recorded it off the air except for the first 35 seconds or so. I hope someone will upload the complete song. Here are the lyrics as best as I can ...
Give Me Passion by Positive Noise
มุมมอง 9K13 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is another wonderful, relatively obscure song which is by Positive Noise. I hope this upload helps it to become better known. Here is interesting comment on this song elsewhere on the web (by cyberinsekt): "What we have right here is a forgotten classic from 1981. Positive Noise were never a fashionable group, and never attracted the praise of the music press. They didn't fit the narrative...
Cheerio Cherry Lips Cheerio - Scrappy Lambert
มุมมอง 3.1K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This recording of the charming Cheerio, Cherry Lips, Cheerio was made off the radio from a broadcast of Dr. Demento who used an excerpt for the closing theme song of his radio programs. I have not filtered out the hissing and crackling in order to preserve some of the atmosphere of recordings on vinyl from the 1920's. The song was written by Mort Dixon and Harry Warren and performed in this 192...
Guilty (Dub version) by Honey Bane (Fatal Microbes)

I recorded this excerpt off a Boston radio station in 1980 or so. Honey Bane released the 7 inch record in 1980. Dub version is B side of the record. The word phrases in the Dub version come from the lyrics for the regular version. I have uploaded separately the regular version with lyrics kindly provided to me by Honey Bane. I hold no copyrights.
