DR650SE Winter Ride
Managed to get out in the first week of July 2024. Long time since I have ridden. Forecast said 3 degC and sun, my temp gauge said 8 degC. Forecast might have been more accurate!
Just a pleasant road ride...

Suzuki DR650SE Most Important Upgrade

This is not click bait...this is the most important upgrade on the DR. Finishes off all I am going to do on the DR. Enjoy...
Propane Tank as trailer tie down storage
มุมมอง 2.4K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
How to use an old propane tank/cylinder for trailer tie down storage. Hardest bit is welding the flat plates into a curved surface. The rest is just mucking about and fitting stuff - hinges, latch, seal. Make sure the tank has no propane in it before you go cutting into it! I left mine several months empty with the valve open, left it in the sun with valve out and washed it out.
Suzuki DR650SE The Long Short Run
มุมมอง 3054 หลายเดือนก่อน
Beautiful end of summer run on the DR. Had planned a longer 300 km Wheat belt ride but the long black coffee beckoned and the ride was cut short via a detour back to Perth. It was a ride...that's all that counts.
Suzuki DR650SE Volt and Temp Gauge Fitting
มุมมอง 4105 หลายเดือนก่อน
Would like to see the voltage and air temperature on the DR so I have fitted a gauge that provides both. Fits nicely under the front cowl on a home made bracket. Time taken to make: 2 weeks for gauge to arrive 1 hour first bracket! 30 minutes second bracket 30 minutes for wires and soldering 15 minutes to fit Easy job if you are handy with metal and electrics.

My cunning plan to put a bigger battery into the helmet failed and I have reduced the battery size to something close to the original. Change worked.
Suzuki DR650SE TechSpec Tank Panels
มุมมอง 8417 หลายเดือนก่อน
The white Acerbis plastic tank seems to be permeable to petrol fumes that then attacks the glue on the TechSpec panels and they will not stick as a result. This video shows how to fix them so they can be re-applied to the tank. Uses 3M VHB tape.

After discovering that my B&B Bashplate was rubbing my alternator housing casing I decided to fit the standard Suzuki Bashplate. Easy job with only one engine mounting bolt to remove, which I then greased to give it some corrosion protection.
Suzuki DR650 SE B&B Bash Plate Discovery
มุมมอง 1468 หลายเดือนก่อน
After laying the bike down on some dirt I noticed afterwards when giving the bike a clean that the bash plate was right up against the casing. Is that how they are designed, how it was installed or how it ended up? I don't know but I'll keep and eye on it.

    Hey Mike, thanks for your work on this. I was inspired by your design and leveraged it on to my DR using a Yam WR250 mudguard and a Superbrace. I cut the mudguard sides and fabricated an aluminum brace out of some spare 3mm 7075 Alum I had on hand cut more or less to your dimensions. It turned out quite well and has certainly strengthened things up. I included the tail section on the brace aft of the triple clamp for added strength of the mudguard. Passed my prelim road test. Thanks again!

    The stories you hear about that upper chain roller being ripped off and tearing a giant hole into the frame is due to bigger guys bottoming out the stock suspension. No need to worry about it after the heavier spring and revalve.

    • @lifelongmotorcycling
      @lifelongmotorcycling 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The pictures I have seen where it has ripped out has the frame corroded out. The key is to keep it lubricated/greased and free moving.

    Nope, wrong. Sit on bike backwards, grab swingarm with left arm and pull swingarm to level with axles or to tightest point and check tension. It should be tight but some flex, if tight loosen, if slack tighten. Perfect, every time.

    • @lifelongmotorcycling
      @lifelongmotorcycling 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They seem to be holding up well. No evidence of peeling off yet. I think if you stuck them on top of the existing glue it wouldn't work. The existing glue on the pads goes soft with the petrol fumes. The pads literally just peeled off after a short period of time.

    "Complete and utter waste of time" - I disagree. I think you could probably sell these for some pretty nice money. It looks really nice. I don't know how much time it took but I would guess at least $100 a pop. If you modified the handle and removed the value so it looked slightly less propanish, and found a hinge that works from the inside - Then perhaps $200.

    • @lifelongmotorcycling
      @lifelongmotorcycling 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Was quite a bit of work...the handle is good for opening up the top. The hinge pivot would need to be on the outside edge or it wouldn't open. I could put the body inside and "L-shape" it to the outside...but it works 😀 Thanks for the comments. It's never going to make me a million 😀

    lol, thanks for the warning. I make do dads from old small propane tanks. I empty them, put a hole in the top and fill it with water. That's sufficient to get all the gas out. No need to leave them out for months. But I'd assume people know better.
