Heljan O gauge Class 25 - Legomanbiffo DCC Sound
My intended layout, Spring Mill Street, won't be much more than a glorified shunting plank so I don't really need small diesels (like this Class 25) to be fitted with dual motors.
Here, I've removed the motor at the no. 1 (radiator) end which leaves just enough room for a 50mm, 8 ohm Visaton speaker (with custom enclosure). The lower stall current requirement of the single motor also means I can use a ESU Loksound V5 L decoder (XL version not required).
I think the single, "large" speaker - pointing-up through the roof fan grille - makes the most of this fantastic sound project created by Ian Bishop (legomanbiffo).

Unusually for Heljan, this is quite a lightweight model in O gauge and is supplied with a relatively small (single) motor. Therefore, the stall current requirement suits the smaller scale decoders. Here, a ESU Loksound V5 has been fitted but with a separate stay-alive capacitor. • @springmillstreet
      @springmillstreet 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind comments and great question! This model is fitted with two 8ohm speakers, fitted in parallel. Both are generic so-called "megabass" type and easy to find online but, in combination, I find they give a very nice sound for O gauge models and are simpler to install than larger types: 1. A roughly, 1-inch square speaker with metal cone, fitted in the fuel/water tank (small modification needed, just to let the sound out). This speaker is the one you can hear mainly in the video. 2. A 'slab' (thin, rectangular) style enclosed, speaker fitted to the underside of the roof (no modification required but I did open up the loco exhaust port, again, just to let more sound out). I would say this second speaker is optional but just adds a slightly more rounded/fuller bass sound. Hope that helps!

    • @ChasingtheSlowTrains-dl2rk
      @ChasingtheSlowTrains-dl2rk 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great, thanks for that - I have a fairly hefty bass speaker for fitting in the body, but it's interesting to hear your thoughts about the fuel tank speaker doing most of the work, so I'll look into that as I have something that may go in there too. Definitely coming round to the idea that two smaller speakers do a nicer job than one huge one.@@springmillstreet

    • @springmillstreet
      @springmillstreet 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s horses for courses. Generally, I believe you will get better fidelity from the largest, non-shrouded, properly enclosed, single speaker you can fit. However, those are all caveats that can sometimes be overcome by fitting, two smaller speakers …

      @@springmillstreetHi, I’m quite interested to find out a bit more about your fuel tank modification for the speaker. I removed both fuel tanks earlier and was a bit taken aback to see there are no holes drilled in the base of the chassis to enable any speaker wires to reach the decoder. I understand you had to drill a series of holes in the bottom of the plastic fuel tank to allow sound out, but you surely didn’t drill through the bottom of the chassis as well?🤔
