Kizilkuyruk Bay on the Lycian Coast of Turkey
We sailed aboard Foggy, our Lagoon 570, from Marmaris harbor to visit the Gocek area of Turkey on September 19th, 2019. This area is called the Lycian Coast after the incredible people who lived here in ancient times. Later on this area became known as the Pirate Coast because it is so rugged that Turkish Pirates could inhabit the area without worry about attacks from land. We pulled into the first little cove on the Gocek peninsula to spend the night. What a treat! The area was beautiful with crystal clear water, nice beaches and lots of land to explore. We went snorkeling and saw quite a few fish including two large Lion Fish and a large sea turtle! Our overnight stay turned into three nights at this anchorage. We even sailed on to take a peek at Gocek and Fethiye and then returned to this cove for the night. What a way to spend the weekend!

On May 15th, 2019 Foggy visited Shipwreck Beach on the Island of Zakynthos in Greece. The ship crashed into this bay while being pursued by the Greek authorities as a smuggler's ship. The ship was abandoned and has created one of the more popular beach destinations by boat in Greece. The wreck created the sand beach as it filled in around the ship. Here is a video of our visit. I was having tro...

We are anchored on the island of Kythnos near a beautiful sand beach which serves as a bridge connecting two islands. Really nice sand and shallow crystal clear water to play in. Kythnos is one of the islands in the Cyclades of Greece. They include Mykonos, Delos, Milos and Poros plus many more. You can spend a whole season or even a lifetime in just this group of islands! We made this stop on ...
Foggy's Backyard - Cephalonia

We sailed by this deserted beach on the northwest end of Cephalonia and decided to stop. Cephalonia, like most Greek Islands in the Ionian Sea is incredibly beautiful and this was a location that we could just stay forever. Our anchorage has everything, Cliffs, beach, clear water, coral, tons of fish and neat caves. This is a diver/snorkel's dream and is as pretty as I have ever seen. The struc...
Egremni Beach, Lefkas Greece

Lefka, Greece, Egremni Beach is a beautiful place. Warm clear water, plenty of colorful fish and few people. An earthquake in 2015 destroyed the road getting to the beach so now only boats may bring people here. When we arrived in the afternoon we almost had the place to ourselves. Nice! The tour boats come in the morning and stay for a couple of hours then it is back to normal. Greece has the ...

We visited Voutoumi Beach on the island of Anti Paxos after visiting neighboring Paxos in Greece. Both islands are beautiful. Voutoumi is a very nice sandy beach that is great for a day at the beach. Tour boat after tour boat comes in for a few hours visit. Once they leave it is definitely a must visit. The water is incredibly clear and cool and great for a swim on a hot Greek day!

The Bay of Kotor is truly one of the most beautiful places we have visited. It is hard to photograph and do justice to the beauty. Fallyn and I are spending nearly a month in Montenegro waiting on my wife's return. We decided to climb the steps leading up to the Fortress ruins on the mountainside. This provided some beautiful views of the bay. This was quite a workout but worth the effort.

This is the cove just to the east of Korcula Croatia that we anchored Foggy in for four nights. It is really pretty and peaceful here. Korcula is a short dinghy ride away. We visited the beautiful city of Korcula, Croatia and enjoyed the peaceful setting. Korcula is believed to be the birthplace and the beginning of Marco Polo's travels. It is a walled city with three of the four towers still in place. The fortifications were built to ward of the raiding Turks. It is really beautiful here and a perfect place to visit by sailboat. Foggy fits right in!

      You mean stuff that is similar like this but either in a better or similar condition? Rom: Colosseum Pula: this here El Djem: El Djem Arena Leptis Magna: Leptis Magna Arena Arles: Arles Arena Nimes: Nimes Arena Verona: Verona Arena There is actualy way more, but those that I mention are most likely the highlights. El Djeme is my favourite to be honest, I can just feel that Gladiator wibe.....the sand colours, the sun....its so big and it looks so mighty. Next to those arenas, there are those other type of amphiteaters: -Aspendos theater in Turkey -Leptis Magna theater -Merida theater -Palmira theater and especially the Bosra theater in Syria -Dougga theater -Plowdiw theater Those are some beautiful ones. There are also those roman style temples such as: -the Baalbek temple in Libanon -the temple in Nimes -that one temple in Pula -the Parthenon of Acropolis -Garni temple in Armenia The biggest one is that in Libanon and also my personal favourite cause it just feels so mighty....the rest is smaller, but also beautiful. No, I never visited any of those, but I would like to.

      Diocletian Palace in Split in Croatia is also interesting to see. Also in the balkans (without Greece) are: -the Justinian Palace in Gamzigrad in Serbia -Heraclea Lyncestis in Macedonia -Skopje Aqueduct in Macedonia -Diana Fortress in Serbia -Apollinia Park in Albania -Berat Castle in Albania -Butrint in Albania -Petrova Crkva or Church of the holy apostels Peter and Paul in Serbia -Viminacium in Serbia -Sirmium in Serbia -Mediana in Serbia -Nessebar in Bulgaria -Vinca in Serbia(not roman stuff, older stuff of a local neolithic civilization) -Tvrtkov Obelisk in Bosnia(disputed stuff....some claim it's from medieval times and build by Tvrtko, others say its before roman times) -Roman Villa Mogorjelo in Bosnia -Croatias Dubrovnik ... that's all that I know, but there is way more there, not like much fancy stuff, but if you get the chance you can go visit it Other things that are not roman are all those early medieval or late antic orthodox monasteries in Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo(if you don't accept it as an independent country then its just Serbia) and also those more modern orthodox churches and stuff, stuff like those osmanic bridge in Mostar and those osmanic period mosques in general in Bosnia, the Vinca culture that I already mentioned in Serbia, those old and more modern catholik churches in Croatia....there is just so damn much. You can't compare most of the roman era stuff to the likes of Baalbek or El Djem or Leptis Magna, but it's still interesting to see and in a pretty decent condition. Mogorjelo in Bosnia, Justinians Palace in Serbia, Butrint in Albania...it has its own touch. But I think that Bulgarias Nessebar will remain my favourite of those all, cause its really in a good condition and it offers so much and I was there once. Its really a beautiful place, especially if you are into eastern roman culture and architecture.

      If you like it really exotic on the other hand... -Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico -Muyil pyramids in Mexico -Chichen Itza in Mexico -Edzna in Mexico -Nocuchich in Mexico -Tenam Puente in in Mexico -Sayil in Mexico -Yaxha in Guatemala and those are just few places there, you got alot of that stuff, especially in Mexico. Then of course in Indonesia you got for example: -the Gunung Padang Megalithic Site -Candi Sukuh In Zimbabwe you got: -Great Zimbabwe medieval ruins In Mali you got: -Great mosque of Djenne -Djinger Ber Mosque -Sankore Mosque(all stuff out of either the Mali empire or the Songhai Empire both from pre-colonial medieval times) In Ethiopia and Eritrea you got those Aksum Kingdom ruins and orthodox churches and monasteries. In Iraq you got: -Babylonia(it's a reconstruction pretty much but still interesting to see) -ziggurat of Ur (original) In Jordan you have: -Petra So those stuff that I mention here is neither the only stuff in those places nor necessarily the best, but it's beautiful and interesting. So much stuff that I want to see, but it's either too expensive or too less time or too dangerous to go to. Also Egypt, Greece etc. And all those colourful mosques in the world...for example in Iran or those former Soviet-Stan republics or in Afghanistan like this Blue Mosque in Afghanistan...why is it only so damn dangerous to go there? Also such a pitty that those 2000 year old giant stone Buddah statues in Afghanistan got destroyed by the Taliban some years ago... Or all those orthodox churches and monasteries or those catholik chruches and monasteries around the world....or those chinese and myanmar stuff. Its just so much out there its cool.

    Thanks for taking the time to reply. Positive response is good news. Where are you based at the moment? What anchor do you have and would you recommend it? How do you find the the helm positions? Reasonable visibility? Thanks Shawn

    • @sailingfoggy160
      @sailingfoggy160 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were at Marina Kastela near Split Croatia last year. We just put Foggy at Marina Preveza in Greece for the winter. We keep her in the water. We will return around the fist of April for 2019's season. We spend about 6 months per year aboard. The anchor that came with Foggy would not hold her and it only took a couple of anchor drags to buy a new anchor. We bought a Mantus 56 kilo, about 126 pounds and it holds like a champ. With reasonable chain out it does not move at all and provides a lot of peace of mind. I looked at Rockna also. One size smaller would be enough for the boat but after an uncomfortable experience I wanted overkill. The helm positions are less than ideal. Before we were looking for a boat with a flybridge or elevated helm. However, you quickly learn where you can stand to see all around and you go from side to side when you need to. We have adjusted to the position and have no problems navigating. There are a lot of nice boats with the helm at the rear and poor visibility when the sails are up. I just bought a remote control for the autopilot so next year I can sit on the front of the boat and steer if I want to!

  • @shawntaylor5826
    @shawntaylor5826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    She does look good. We are going to look at one for sale next week. Please can you give me a bit of feedback on the boat? How many people do you have on-board as a minimum when sailing? Is there significant slamming in heavy sea? Would you feel comfortable taking her across the Atlantic? Thanks.

    • @sailingfoggy160
      @sailingfoggy160 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My wife and I sail her with no trouble. We had my son aboard last summer as crew and with three it was a little easier. It is nice to have one at the helm and two tending the sails or handling the dock lines. The boat has plenty of room for friends and family. There has been no slamming in heavy sea and we have been in some rough conditions a few times. The bridgedeck in very high on a 570 so you speed over the waves with little to no pounding. A 570 could easily sail across the Atlantic or anywhere in the world. As a matter of fact we outfitted Foggy with a watermaker this year so we can make that crossing after we finish our tour of the med. The watermaker also frees one up to forget marinas and searching for water. With our solar panels, generator and water maker we seldom need to pay for a slip in the marina. Good luck to you!

      We rented the slip here at Marina Kastela for a year, until end of June 2018 so we will keep the boat here. We kind of wished we hadn't because we would like to sail a little further south and get even a milder winter. Right now the we plan to go home to the US in November and stay in our home until early spring then return. Our home is for sale but so far no buyers. We figure that once it gets cold and windy that we will be more comfortable there. Next year we will move on and by winter we will be in as mild a spot as we can find and stay on board.
