Photographing FAST Running Winter Waterfalls!!!
All the snow we had in New Brunswick over the last few weeks has melted and led to our rivers behaving as if it were spring. With lots of fast-moving water in our rivers and some ice/snow remaining along the shore I figured it would be a great time to get out and photograph a waterfall!

Importance Of Shutter Speed While Photographing A Snowstorm
มุมมอง 82721 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
For the first time this season I have the opportunity to make some photographs while its snowing and I could not be happier. My favorite aspect of photographing during a 'snowstorm' (sorry for the clickbait...) is testing out different shutter speeds to see which accurately reflect the snow as I am seeing it with my own eyes. This week I ventured to a nearby woodland that I had no idea existed. This is a particularly special woodland because it is one of the oldest protected old grown Acadian forests remaining in my local area. The snow-covered trees made this photography outing even more enjoyable and made making images an absolute blast! Check Out My NEW Website: timpoirierphotography.com/ Follow Me: Instagram: in...
The Best Time Of Year For Photography
มุมมอง 55021 วันที่ผ่านมา
We had our first proper snow of the season this week and I simply had to take advantage of the photographic opportunities. I headed to a local woodland early in the morning to ensure I would be the first person there and the fluffy snow would be undisturbed. Although winter can be a tough time to make photographs because of the cold temperature and restricted access to some areas it is one of m...
Long Exposure Photography: Worth The Time And Effort?
มุมมอง 36928 วันที่ผ่านมา
This week I ventured out to a waterfall for two reasons: 1. It was near by and unfortunately, I did not have much free time to spend with my camera this week. 2. It had rained heavily for two days so I figured there would be lots of water flowing down the falls. On my way to the falls, I stumbled upon a couple compositions that made me take out my camera and see what I could capture. Once I rea...

What a lovely video mate! Hope you had a lovely christmas!
Thank you Arty, I was visiting lots of family so it was great! Finally getting to take a rest day today 😂 I hope you had a nice holiday as well!
Tim! I've really wanted some advice on snow photography and here you are. This is great. I'm grateful for your thoughts.
Thank you Chris, I'm glad you got something from the video! I never plan what I'm going to say/do other than get out with my camera so I worry that I ramble a lot.

@tim.poirier Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Tim! Cheers,
Thank you Will, Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
I've always preferred long exposures, usually sticking to a one second shutter speed, but I feel that after 2 seconds it's kind of redundant because there won't be much difference. Go too long and you start to lose texture in the water completely. In my younger years, I shot a lot of Fujichrome Velvia at an ISO of 40. This, combined with overcast days and a small aperture of 16 or 22 would usually get me to that 1 to 2 second exposure without the need for an ND. I would add a polarizer if I needed to add a couple more stops. I've been photographing for 35 yrs and it was only a few years ago that I bought an ND filter, ironically because I needed to get the digital ISO down far enough to slow it down. My 10 stop ND is almost overkill- best used on brighter days or on the rare occasion I want to make something look surreal. For waterfalls, I still think just using a polarizer as an ND filter is just right. What I like about yours is that it also warmed it up a little. Not sure if that's the color of your polarizer or your post-processing, but I like it better. I also agree about leaving some shine on the rocks, in which case just rotate your polarizer to give less polarizing effect. As for audio, hard to get away from background noise and record on location. Only suggestion would;d be to do a voiceover for that section.
Wow thank you for this lovely comment! It's great to hear your perspective. The slightly warmer tones in the image with the filter was a result of the filter itself but I agree the warmer colours look better! Taking your feedback and my personal experiences into consideration when I purchase new filters I think I will opt for a good quality polarizer and then over time accumulate ND filters as needed.
I recently subscribed and this is the third video of yours I've watched. You have a great on-camera personality, knack for speaking, and natural ability to get your point across. Winter photography is always a challenge. Good for you on just getting out.
Thank you I appreciate the nice comment! Some days it can be hard to get out with my camera, but once I'm out I never regret it 😀
Keep going ❤❤
Thank you!
This video has too low volume so i quitted it.
Sorry about that, thanks for the feedback
Great video and photos as always, Tim. I could really feel that snowy enchanted foresty vibe. Absolutely stunning!
Thanks Arty, there is nothing as peaceful as being in the snow covered woods! And of course there are lots of opportunities for photographs.
Great video as always dude! I can't wait till we get some snow! So ready for it!
Snow is the best! Too bad ours is gone now 😂
Gorgeous scenery there maybe at the end of the video do a montage of the shots as a recap of the days trip
Thank you! That is a good idea, I have tried different ways to share all the images but have not found one I'm super happy with yet - I will give it a try 😃
Agreed. Nice video and good luck with the winter photography!
Thank you!! Unfortunately the snow has all melted already hopefully there will be more soon.
@tim.poirier It will be back 🙂👍❄️
Great video! It's great to seem some honest landscape photography!
Thanks, Austen I appreciate it! I am trying to be as authentic and transparent as possible.
Nice images Tim
Thank you!!
Great video, really hoping we get snow here this year, usually never enough to get content with. Keep it up!
Cheers mate! I hope you get lots of snow, it's supposed to be +12 degrees here tomorrow and rain like crazy so our snow won't last long 😂
Great video Tim! Audio sounds just fine, it helps when you face away from the waterfall, but overall the background noise adds to the ambiance. I especially like the audio where you make up short songs to sing to us while photographing :)
Thanks Nick! Apparently I was in a sing song mood, as I was editing the video almost all the clips where I was not talking to the camera I was just singing to myself 😂😂 I never realize I was a singer....
Added video value for me :) Also if you can make landscape photography ear-worms you will get more repeat viewers!!!!
@lightmeetslens I will start quietly including subliminal messages into songs 😂
You can raise it up by closing the legs more which will give you 2”-3”.
Thank you! Somehow I've never tried this but I'm excited to give it a shot next time I need an extra inch of height.
Enjoyed this one 👍🙂🍂
Thank you!
@tim.poirier 🙂👍
Thanks for watching! Any suggestions on how to minimize noise from running water?
Great video! Got me inspired to go chasing waterfalls! How much rain do you all get up there?
Typically not that much this time of year but the last couple years we have had quite a lot. The rain we had last week easily could have been snow but it was not cold enough. Go find some water falls before they all freeze over!
Nice
Thanks!
Very nice video 👍🙂
Thank you!
wow just , wow
Thanks 🙏
Good work Tim, I liked the images of the leaves. 👏
Thank you, I'm happy with how they turned out.
Every time I watch your videos, I wish I was living in Canada. I am so jealous that you have places like that!
I feel very fortunate to live where I do! Lots of photo opportunities if you can for a visit!
nice love the beach
Me too!
loved the vid dude i love how even though i know nothing about photography your videos are always fun watch and im already looking forward to the next one ps i liked the hand outro
Thank I appreciate it!
Always enjoy the energy and positivity you bring to your videos. Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you very much 😃
It’s Tuesday and it’s another video! LFG!
LFG, I love Tuesdays! Thank you🙏
Nice little video with some nice images. Just wanted to give a little tip regarding what you said about the tripod height for future reference. If you have another situation where you need it to be only a hair taller and you're not balanced precariously on a rock, you can close the legs some. With them not spread fully, it won't be as sturdy, but it will make the camera just a bit higher, and that might be just the amount you need to make a difference. I hope that helps. And, for what it's worth, I liked the photo as is. The bush didn't bother me. Anyway, have a great day. Cheers from Maine. :) Paula
Thatnk you Paula, that's such a good piece of advice!!! I can't believe I've never thought about that 😂
Good deal. With the set up in this vid no real heavy wind it should work out great.
this looks beautiful
Thank you, it's a stunning beach!

I personally prefer the one with the bubbles. Yes, they are a bit distracting, but the composition and colours are just absolutely great. And I also really love the first image as well.
Thanks Arty, the image with the bubbles is starting to grow on me. That first image is definitely my favorite of the morning, getting up early tends to pay off, it's a shame it's so hard to do 😂
@tim.poirier You wanna know a secret? That's why most of my videos are shot during the day, not during the sunrise🤣 cos I'm one lazy photographer
@@photoflooddays I totally understand 😂 Now that the days are getting shorter and the sun is rising later in the day it's nice on the weekend I can sleep in a little. BUT on the flip side I can't sneak out for a photoshoot before work during the winter unless I want everything to be in the pitch black.
What's your camera and lens if i may ask
My camera body is a Fujifilm xt-4 and the two lenses I used in this video were the Fuji 18-55 F2.8-4 and the Fuji 55-200 F3.5-4.8. Both lenses are 'relatively' affordable and produce fantastic image quality!
Thank you so much!! Keep up the great videos i enjoyed this one a lot ❤ @@tim.poirier

Nice man, you give of a nice vibe also. You seem like an appreciative and grateful person. Judging from this little short. =)
Thank you, I appreciate that 😃
Did you pick up the People's trash that was left around from that blue garbage bag that I'm looking at on that tree if you did young man thank you very much more should be like you and us people Leave no trace of any thing
I cannot take credit for collecting all of that garbage, but I always make an effort to pack out any waste I encounter when I am out exploring and I think it is incredibly important for everyone to adhere to the LNT principals 😃
@@tim.poirier Again thank you And I'm now curious how many other people ask that question and how many people that is on your list that actually it hears to the leave no trace principles I'm pretty sure there's a video in there somewhere
@@cgriggsiv that's a good idea!
i like the sand formations tbh ( 7/10 :) )
Thanks!
thanks again, keep sharing! you got out there & that's what counts. it's kinda like fishing...there's fishing & there's catching & both are enjoyable. don't have expectations to come away with a great photo every time! ...d
Thanks David, I really like that analogy!
Nice video Tim, nice shots, the last one was my fav.
Thanks Richard, that final image is quite nice 🙂
