This channel has also become a home for my nature vlogs, where I document trips to bird reserves and other fabulous countryside locations in the UK and beyond. This year (2024) I'm challenging myself with a 'Big Year', where I try to see (or hear) as many different species of bird in the UK as possible. My goal is 200! Follow along my monthly Big Year vlogs here, and don't forget to subscribe!
I also love "Making of"s, and I originally created this channel to run alongside my main goldhillproductions channel to give me an outlet for a kind of "behind the scenes" look at the many and varied creative projects I found myself involved in, from music making, theatre, and film. Maybe I'll start that style of vlogging again soon, but for now, BIRDS!

Thanks for watching!
i know this video was a long time ago but i think your temminck's stint was a kentish plover
Wow, the Newquay dolphins! My daughter and I went there to try and see them once, but we were unlucky. A lovely relaxing video, at least to watch, but you certainly put in the foot miles and the climb to compile all the footage. I finally got my visit to Minsmere now the gardening season is winding down a bit. I actually went three times during my 5 days in Suffolk. They have just finished revamping the scrape and birds starting to come back. Still two avocets, but nearer to me there must be over 200 on the river Stour at Mistley, Essex. Also on the Scrape were five green sandpipers, a female goosander and a little stint. I had close views of bearded tits that sounded like cattle trampling through long grass as they moved through the reeds. On the beach where I was staying was a shore lark and on my last evening, I would have missed a raven had it not called from a telegraph wire behind me. We don't get many of those here yet, but they are slowly moving in. Looking forward to your next video as the year moves on to see if you get a chance to see any winter visitors you may have missed at the beginning of the year. Oh and despite three visits to Minsmere this week, I didn't get to go into the Island Mere hide... I shall have to go back on a day trip soon!
@@tonycritcher3419 ahhh Minsmere sounds as magical as ever... I've never seen a shore lark! Definitely an exciting bird. Maybe next time I'm there 🤞 The dolphins are notoriously temperamental about showing up 😅 Definitely got lucky that day...
@@BranwenVlogs I'm not sure if the Shorelark seen at Minsmere yesterday was the one I'd seen just a few miles up the coast a couple of days earlier. Yes the dolphins certainly gave us the slip that day.
Thank you 👍 another lovely video. However I might need to put in a complaint 😅 Does the inclusion of September mean we dont get a video 9 ( or we do but it is October?) keep up the great work!
@@catsfromthedarkside Don't worry, I did a week in Scotland which started late in September and spilled into October, so that's going to be episode 9, then I'm just wrapping up a week in Cumbria/Yorkshire/Lancashire, that's going to be the official October episode 10 ✨ My plan to keep it strictly one episode per month didn't hold up, but I'm still going to make it 12 episodes in all 😅
@@BranwenVlogs ooh excellent news 👌 I'm in NW England ( Warrington ) so it will be exciting to see where you have gone. I saw on FB Leighton Moss which is one of my favourites so I hope it was good to you. Safe travels!

Thanks for a great video. Lovely photos & videos of the birds. Those 2 Shelducks were looking after c18 young! Must be several clutches!? All the best, John.
@@BMW7series251 thank you for watching! Yes, the shelduck clutches were so huge! I think they may have been sharing parental responsibilities - I've heard that mallards do that as well... Amazing to see!
Another really enjoyable episode. (0:17 says episode 7: Summer) just to let you know I was paying attention.
@@musician1000 thank you so much for watching again! Well observed on the mistake - it's not the first and probably won't be the last 😅😅
Hi Branwen. Lovely footage as always. Your Sandpiper looked like a Green Sandpiper to me 👍
@@clarkwgriswold157 thank you! Yes, on my last watch through before uploading I did start to have reservations about the sandpiper... It's just not 'dumpy' enough to be a common. Green sounds likely, though it didn't seem as dark in the upperparts as I'd have thought, though it could be a trick of the light or perhaps a young bird... Sadly it wouldn't make any difference to the year total. Still holding out for a wood sandpiper, or even curlew sandpiper somewhere along the way!
Hello Branwen, yes I agree that it is a green sandpiper. I hope you have since found the wood and curlew sands. I've not seen either of those yet this year.
@@tonycritcher3419 Hi Tony. A Wood Sandpiper was at Slimbridge today. Don’t know if that’s anywhere near you?
@@clarkwgriswold157 Oh no.. I'm in Essex on the East coast, thank you for letting me know though. I may have to scour the edges at Abberton Reservoir near Colchester for one.
@@tonycritcher3419 still waiting on those two sadly... There's still time! 🤞
What a brilliant video, I've watched them all but this was my favourite so far. The photography is so beautiful ( if you don't mind. which camera are you using for the video? I remember you saying in video 1 or 2 but can't find it). You are captivating and so peaceful/calming to watch and your mum was brilliant and informative once again! It was great to see inside the lodge, I went to the reserve for the first time last year for my birthday and the Bluethroat was in the exact same spot then, lifer for me and I was so pleased. Amazing to see it must like it and returned back there to that spot by the shepherd's hut from very far away again this summer 😂 Also I love your humour coming through in the video and captions ( scruffy blue tit 😅). I saved this one to watch as a treat after cleaning my bird feeders. It didn't disappoint, thank you ❤
@@catsfromthedarkside wow, what a really lovely comment! That's made my day 💜 Thank you so much! Definitely recommend Bewick's Lodge - it's magical. Not cheap, but you can book it by the night, and it sleeps 3 couples.
@@BranwenVlogs Hopefully I will get to go there one day, thanks again!
Hello Branwen, my goodness what an experience! Meeting up with family, staying in such a beautiful house, all the wildlife, evening safari and finally getting to see the spotted redshank and bluethroat! I bet the time flew by so fast with so much to see and do. It is no wonder that you are looking forward to going back. Stunning footage and soothing accompanying music. As always a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you.
@@tonycritcher3419 thank you so much, as always 🤩 It's funny, at the time I felt like I wasn't getting much good footage, but I guess the joy of the three days worked its way into the camera without my noticing!
@@BranwenVlogs You certainly have an eye on what's around and naturally reach for the camera, which I doubt is never far away! I have never seen meadow sweet to appreciate the scent! I must look and try harder to find these gems! Am off to Minsmere, finally, in the morning for four days in Suffolk. I hope it isn't flooded as it was last November. Weather not looking too promising, but hey it may force some birds to take shelter for me to find. Being a gardener, I have been waiting all summer for a decent amount....I think I am about to get it!
@@tonycritcher3419 good luck in Suffolk! It's a great time to go, despite the rain possibilities. I've got my fingers crossed for you.
What a treat that was! Thank you :)

Congratulations on the Bluethroat. A cracker of a bird 👍
Thanks! Yes, it took us a couple of goes, but so happy to see it 🤩
I've never been to Slimbridge , so it was lovely to see all the wonderful wildlife . Really wonderful camerawork Branwen. The Avocets with their chicks were so beautiful , the amazing cranes( very envious!) . Love your appreciation of the wild plants as well . I have always loved Sir Peter Scott's art work and it inspired me at a young age to draw and paint wildlife . Thanks for a brilliant video
@@KeefsCattys Thank you so much! It's definitely worth a visit. The collection birds are lovely to see, and there are some magnificent wild spaces all around the reserve. Thanks for watching! 🙏🦆🦉🦢

A lovely reserve and a loved film.
Thank you for watching :)
Hi Branwen, I noticed in the intro I saw that you were using some kind of app to log all your sightings, what's it called?
Hi James, it's the BTO app, called BirdTrack. It's great! You start a list at which point it auto-detects your location (or you can over-ride it if you like), and you just start adding birds. Super-intuitive. You can add lots of detail (like count of a species, specific sexes, any other notes etc), or just keep it very simple. You have to make a BTO account to use it, but that's actually awesome as you can login on the BTO website and view all your birding data in all kinds of ways, which has been really useful for keeping track of a Big Year. Plus, all the data contributes in some small way to the BTO's work of tracking species populations etc. It was a great app to discover just before this year started!
Just stumbled across your video while I was looking for my usual photography vids, it certainly made a pleasant change to find someone so knowledgeable about bird, enjoyed it immensely 👌👍
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed :) I'm trying to document every month this year, but have fallen behind a little...
I love birds on my ranch not so fair from my home i build them feeder and even behind my house i put some feeder for birds. My favorite here is Sokol (falcon) bird of prey we have here 4 diferente species blue one, brown one and two are smaller, one of the fastest birds on this planet.
Hi Branwen, Thank you for yet another beautiful video. Stunning footage as always and interesting pieces to camera. Rather difficult for me to choose a favourite bird from your East to West adventures. Dartford Warbler and Little Tern have to be up there! I still haven't managed to get to Minsmere since November, when the Scrape was more like a lake! I have a week booked not far from Minsmere in October, but still hoping to get up there before then. As for the cheeky Grey Seal climbing aboard the dinghy, what can I say? I loved the Swallowtail butterfly, I have still to see one! Your Big Year is certainly growing and will have since May, then there is the Autumn Migration fast approaching! I wish you all well with your quest and have my fingers crossed for 200+!
Thank you so much Tony! I always love a Dartford, and the one we saw was a great payoff after a long walk around Dunwich without seeing one until we were literally two minutes from the car park again! Typical. Although we have several more trips away planned in the Cairngorms, north of England (autumn) and Skye (midwinter) I'm not sure we'll get to 200... We'll see! Sadly my work has been really busy (I'm a freelancer so usually take whatever comes along when it does) which has probably prevented me dashing away on emergency twitch trips! I've speculated some species we might see on some of those trips away and that would bring us up to about 175, which leaves me wondering where another 25 species might come from 🤣 But you never know... Keep everything crossed!
@@branwenmunn9417 I know the feeling, being a self employed gardener, I have to take the work while the weather is favourable. Hence my breaks in the winter months. 175 species and being so busy is a great target and I will be keeping everything crossed that you exceed that and have great fun in your quest. So glad that your Dartford Warbler finally decided to show. Lovely birds, as of course they all are in their own way. I even enjoy the even less colourful blackcap and gadwall drake. So easily pleased when I do get out for some birding. I do get some nice surprises whilst gardening though. Keep up the good work and of course, Happy Birding!
At last! Thank you, I really enjoyed that. My favourite bird of the trip was definitely your mum.
@@musician1000 Haha, thank you! She is so chuffed to hear that! 😂
I just found your channel and subscribed. I planned to have a Big Year but things got in the way. I make videos in ny garden sometimes but i am feeling inspired by watching yours and others to try a birding blog next year. Im enjoying your videos, thank you.
@@catsfromthedarkside thank you so much for watching! I'm a bit behind on editing, but hoping to catch up a bit next week. Glad you're feeling inspired! Bird vlogging is challenging, but so rewarding and loads of fun. Definitely makes me make more of an effort to get out there 🙂
Hi Branwen I am enjoying your channel. I used to live in Wiltshire and have visited most of the locations shown here. I am now living by Alicante in Spain. My year list total is currently 189 and it's getting harder now. I have only travelled 100 miles from my base . Great birds here locally Rollers and Bee-eaters nesting.
Hi Geoff! We used to live in Bradford-on-Avon! It's a lovely area, and great for birding. You're doing amazingly on your year list! I'm definitely jealous of the birds around Alicante. We go to Mallorca fairly often, and I absolutely love birding there every time...
Hi Branwen, I'm really enjoying your channel. II think your fish may have been carp...
Thank you so much for watching! Yes, I agree about the carp in retrospect... Tench were mentioned on the board in the hide, but I definitely think you're right.
So many wonderful bird sightings! New subscriber here ✨

Soooo many new spots! Really enjoyed our Cardiff and Newport adventures. Loved the editing about the rain at the end 😅 x
It was so fun to visit those places with you :) Ha, glad you enjoyed the rain bit 🤣 I need to lean more into the ridiculousness sometimes! xx
well done on flying through the 100 mark. another pukka episode.
Thank you so much! 200 is looking harder by the day 😅 But I shall persevere, and I have many plans to accumulate more ticks 🤣
Congratulations on passing the 100. RSPB Gwenffrwd Dinas has Marsh Tits. Often coming to the bird table. Brilliant at this time of the year as well for Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Wood Warblers etc. Can 100% recommend. 👍
Thank you so much! We've just got back from a week in Suffolk so the numbers are greatly rising, though my goal of 200 is looking very frighteningly distant still 😅 Thanks for the Dinas tip too. We had it in our schedule already, for both flycatchers, but that's a good thought about wood warbler (sometimes see those at Ynys Hir or Brechfa Forest though not reliable), not to mention the marsh tit! Will have to loiter near the feeders. Are they in the little field next to the car park still?
@@BranwenVlogs Hi Branwen. Yup. Right next to the car park. There’s some picnic benches there so a nice place for a cuppa as well. 👍

Excellent Branwen. Superb jack snipe, very handsome little chap. I'd count a rock dove - right habitat, definitely as at least two looked 'plumage-right'. Great edit, looking forward to more expeditions through April :)
Thank you as always Simon! Yes I'd been wondering about the rock dove situation. The Ceredigion coast is definitely in the right habitat, and as you say, plumage-wise a couple were spot on. I've added them in on BirdTrack for that day, so next video the end total will be one extra :) Pretty sure we'll see some on Skye later in the year in one of our usual spots, just for 100% confirmation!!
Lovely scenery and a nice selection of birds. Treecreeper and bullfinch always a joy to encounter. And what a dark red fox! It makes my birding day to have add a few mammals, the fox being a great favourite of mine. Your year total is going well and so much beautiful footage of those that you get to see!

Hello Branwen, you've certainly added some great species to your Big Year, well done! Soon the sand martins and wheatears will be spring additions before the big influx of summer migrants. I've been hearing the odd chiffchaff singing since January and had one contact calling in my garden at first light today. Is Minsmere on your itinery again for this year? Wherever you decide, I wish you all good birding and safe journeys!
Thank you so much! Indeed we're getting reports of sand martins at one of our local spots 😍 I heard a chiffchaff too the other day, and I'm sure they'll be making an appearance in the March episode. I'm excited for all the summer arrivals! And yes, Minsmere is definitely on the cards. Watch out for the May episode!

Thank you Simon! I'll hold you to that wheatear 😄 You've got a good chance of being right - they often appear on the heath at our favourite local spot 🤞
Good luck on your big year! Your dilemma with your cameras is almost exactly the same one I have! I have a 60D for photos and my SX60HS for video. Always so much trouble to bring both out. -Ben
Thanks for watching! Yes, they're both really great tools at what they do, but a lot to carry, especially with bins and water etc... Good for the back muscles though I guess! I have a great strap for the 60D which really helps, but still, yep, not a gentle meander when you're carrying them all. Meanwhile my scope gathers dust on the shelf 😄
I had my very first Great white egret at Minsmere. Never heard Nightjar there though. I never got to see any adders along the adder walk either. So I still have some things to look and listen out for on future visits. I'm really enjoying SpringVlog and the team!
Thanks for watching! We had such a fun week!!
@@BranwenVlogs It looked like an amazing time, especially staying on the reserve. I live just 54 miles away so only do day visits, but not as often as I'd like, or used to. The new boardwalk to the East Hide is a lot more comfortable inside the 'sea wall' than the sandy trudge on the other side. I did think I might miss out on the dune stonechats by using the boardwalk, but on the way back one perched on a bush on the inside. longer than any I have ever watched anywhere.
Goodness me, I commented five years ago! Why on earth didn't I subscribe then? I have missed so much, but happily catching up!
SpringVlog, Love it! Island mere hide was the first place I saw spoonbills during my first visit. My most recent visit was last November and so much was flooded. The Scrape was more like a lake.
Oh gosh! We've got a little excursion planned there for later this year :) Hoping we might get spoonbills again. There have been regular spoonies at Llanelli wetlands over recent years, but we've not managed to see them this year yet...
@@BranwenVlogs Spoonbills bred for the first time in Essex at Abberton Reservoir near Colchester a couple of years ago and again last year with a cattle egret joining them in the little egret roost. Visible from the Layer Breton Causeway. Just in case you fancy a day out off of the Minsmere Reserve. Abberton is usually pretty good if you've never been. It has a centre, Hides, walks and good views from the two causeways. And cake almost as good as those at Minsmere.
@@tonycritcher3419 Thanks for the tip! I think I went to Abberton once when I was living near Wheathampstead in Herts. A birding friend and I spent many weekends exploring Herts, Essex and Beds. So many great spots around there!
