Faraway Board Game Review - Left to Right...Then Right to Left!
Welcome to Alula, a mysterious continent with ever-changing geography, shaped after the rhythm of the seasons. Beyond the Sea of Mists lies the mysterious continent of Alula. Roam across the land in search of its secrets, meet its inhabitants and list its wonders in order to gain more fame than your opponents.
Throughout a game of Faraway, you will play a row of 8 cards in front of you, from left to right. These cards represent the regions you will come across while exploring the lands. Characters on these cards will grant you victory points if you later fulfil the conditions they demand. At the end of the game, you walk back the same way, scoring cards in the opposite order you played them. There lies the heart of the gameplay. Throughout the game, the cards you play will serve both to set new objectives, and to meet the ones you played previously.
Each turn, you play a card from a hand of 3. Then you pick a new card from a face-up river. As play is simultaneous in Faraway, you must take into account a clever priority system in all of your choices - being last to pick a card leaves you with fewer options and often less profitable choices for the next turns.

Great review thanks a million
@@MrChickster12 you are welcome! Thank you for the kind words! Have you played Scythe? Did you like it?
I could be totally wrong, but I think the tiebreaker might mean just the person with the lowest card. Seems like a whole lot of math otherwise.
Very possible! I see your point....but who doesn't want to flex that cellphone calculator!? Actually, both seem odd. One way is a lot of adding, the other is boiled down to a single card that was played. Either way, still better than a "shared victory"! lol
Tiebreaker is usually the person closest to the start player
@kflath lol I STILL haven't played Yokohama since! Maybe I'll break the ice with the new edition. Gosh, I hope they fixed that!!!!
@rollingwiththebeard it states the same but with (including the start player) now
@@kflath 🙄 better. I'll accept it. 😆
I've found that "building a collection" isn't the best thing to do. At least for my board gaming habits. My group has its select few we like to play. And foundations of Rome is one of them! Don't get me wrong, I have a pretty large collection, but I keep thinking about down sizing lately. And this game would stay.
@@lit_wick nice to see another fellow FoR fan! Have you tried foundations of metropolis? I'm building a large collection in hopes of doing retreats for the channel. Have you ever been to Origins in Columbus? They use the CABS library of games....something like that. Obviously I'm still growing but you got to start somewhere.
@rollingwiththebeard I havnt played metropolis. Doesn't seem worth it since I already have FoR. Yeah that seems cool! Building a library like that for those purposes

@@ttocsisme thats awesome! I didn't know it was on there. I actually JUST tried bga last week. 😆 Played a game of Akropolis. Mixed feelings about board games on digital mediums.

Disagree about the verdict on 2 players. Been having multiple games with just me and my wife and we love it, even considering we have the option to play games like duel and azul, we are still coming back to 2 player scout when we want a quick game. Sure, it's quite different from the 3-5 player variants, but still very enjoyable!
@@calccalccalc thank you for sharing your thoughts on that. Maybe I'll have to revisit it with 2 players....there are just so many good 2 player (only) games these days!

Wow! Thank you fellas so much for ranking our game Chemical Overload so high on the list, #2 and #1. I am genuinely shocked, but in a great way. Thank you so much. I don't know who this Mike guy in your video is, but I like him already :) I sincerely thank you for adding Chemical Overload to this list. What a great New Year's surprise. I'd like to address some things you guy said. Insert- Sad to hear you don't like the insert. But let me explain. We spent a lot of time on this insert. Initially we also wanted individual slots for each and every potion, but it just wasn't realistic. If we had individual slots for all the potions, flasks, chemicals and other cards, it would be around 60 slots, which wouldn't be possible without making the box much larger than it already is. And we wanted to keep the standard 12x12x4ish size box that most games are now-a-days. Dominion can get away with it because they have a little less market cards and overall types of cards than we do. Sleeved Cards - This also ties into another point you made. We did design the insert with enough room to fit the entire game unsleeved OR sleeved. So we sleeved our whole game and it fits back into the box very nice and snug. I've hear people tell us then they use thick Dragon Shield or some other sleeves, and while it does still all fit, its a little tight. But yes, the insert was designed with that in mind :) Action Tokens - You guys had mentioned that sometimes you forget how many actions you've taken. Well when playtesting the game, it didn't really seem like a problem. But we have gotten numerous people with the same "problem" of how many actions they've used. This becomes an issue mainly late in the game when all the potions are free to play and you have a ton of cool combos going. So, we decided to address this and are happy to say that we will be adding action tokens in the first expansion Chemical Overload: Entropy. So we listened, and we fixed it. Randomizers - We had originally had these in the game, but the size, weight, and cost of the game was getting to high. We needed to slim it down somehow. So we removed a few potions, and some card quantities and unfortunately the randomizer cards. We wanted to keep the consumer price as low and possible for the amount of value you're getting with this game. Over 550 cards in this, plus the boards and gems and metal coins. We feel we delivered the best value we could without making the game super expensive/ heavy. BUT with that said, we are releasing an expansion soon and another one planned at a later time, so maybe once all the games are out, we will release some kind of randomizer deck that spans across all the games. Expansions - Speaking of expansions. My new friend Mike mentioned that this game would be great for expansions. We couldn't agree more! :) In addition to the current game, we already have 2 mini expansions. One was when we Kickstarted it, not on our website though. The other is the Adventurer's Promo Pack which is available on our website. We also have promo cards we give out for free at conventions we attend. In additional to that, we are gearing up for a (Hopefully) 2025 release of our first full expansion called Chemical Overload: Entropy. Which you can follow on Kickstarter now, we hope to launch this year or at the latest Q1 2026. There is also one more expansion planned that I have not announced or mentioned anywhere yet, but here. So I highly doubt you read all that, but thank you again so much for not only reviewing our game in your previous video, but then having it on a top 10 list for 2024. It means a lot to us. We are glad that you really understand the game and get the thematics of it and the mechanics and strategy. It feels good seeing someone who really gets a game you made and plays it well and enjoys it. Also you were mentioning a little at the end, Yes this is our first game., We designed and published it ourselves. It IS in a few stores local to us in the PA area. Hoping to branch out to other stores also. But it will always be available on our website and well ship them out. I don't want to say the website here cause it might delete this comment which I just spent 30 minutes writing. Just search our company name, Rebirth Games or Chemical Overload :) Thanks Eric (and MIke)
@@RebirthGamesInc Thank you for the quick comment! Lol I suspect it took you longer than 30 minutes to write! Looking forward to the expansions! *off to buy sleeves*

That should shorten the game also. Thank you.
@@sharefaerber5268 Thats a good "dog" house rule for the kiddos! Thank you for the comment. To clarify, is it the facial hair you hate or the person behind the beard!?
I disagree heavily with the "you need leaders and cities, but you dont need edifice" Leaders and Cities change the balance of the game BIG BIG time, and the way the game is played BIG TIME and much more randomness (also they both have LOTS AND I MEAN LOTS of iconography) Edifice just adds a little spicy and it doesnt changes the balance as the other expansions, no randomness.(very little iconography)
@@tomboiv1653 thank you for sharing your thoughts! I do agree Leaders and Cities adds alot of iconography and isn't ideal for new players to 7 Wonders and adding Edifice to the base game with new players is a nice addition (assuming its the correct group. I've played Edifice with a group before and no one cared about the Monuments/projects (or whatever there called) and we just took the penalty. Have you tried Armada? I dont think I've mixed all of them into a game yet.
