minimalism for modular #4: sample + hold + phase
Tiny changes over time are essential to minimalist (and ambient) pieces. This video demonstrates how to create gradually evolving sequences with a sequencer and a “sample and hold” that are NOT perfectly synchronized. Any sequencer and “sample and hold” will work! Detailed patch notes included.

Switches (Eurorack sequencing without sequencers)
มุมมอง 1.3K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
A sequential switch is an essential utility for modular music-making. But Disting EX's multi-switch offers up to SIX switches that can be configured in multiple ways: bidrectional, sequential, random, ping-pong, etc. And each switch is essentially a double switch: it can alternate its inputs AND outputs. Best of all, these sequences can work separately but they can also work together, sharing t...

Inverted echoes (a modular patch idea)
มุมมอง 7374 หลายเดือนก่อน
The aim here - besides trying out the TSNM as an expressive keyboard - was to generate an inverted echo, so that a descending melody comes back as an ascending one, or vice versa. (I stole this idea from Bach, who often used contrapuntal inversion, playing the theme “upside-down”). Mutable Instruments’ Beads (in delay mode) is perfect for this, but any module with a long delay would work. The o...
Performance sequencing
มุมมอง 4305 หลายเดือนก่อน
Most Eurorack sequencers allow for some interaction during live performance - muting and unmuting steps or changing the sequence's length, direction etc. But typically the notes themselves remain fixed. With the sequencer mode on Doboz's TSNM, you get something closer to live improvisation - almost like a looper. Other modules used: Intellijel’s Dixie II Shakmat’s Banshee Reach ALM's Pamela's N...

I love my main sequencer (Qu-bit Bloom), but it doesn’t have cv control over sequence length, direction, clock rate, glide, etc. Then I realized that I had two ingredients to build a more patch-programmable, four-channel sequencer: Disting’s Multi-Switch mode, which offers up to 6 customizable switches, and a fader bank, Tesseract Modular's Sweet Sixteen... Sonic sculptures (generative modular music)
มุมมอง 1.1K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
(For Paula) This patch was inspired by hours (weeks?) of listening to Morton Feldman’s exquisite music. It ended up quite different harmonically from Feldman’s pieces, partly due to the limitations of a modular system. The envelope generators and attenuators required some tweaking to get that balance between repetition and divergence, revolving and evolving. In retrospect, I could have left lon...
Interlocking hands: Minimalist generative piano (Qu-bit Bloom, Disting EX)
มุมมอง 1.5K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Recently I’ve been playing minimalist pieces on the piano (Phillip Glass, Howard Skempton) that involve both polyrhythms and overlapping hands. For this video, I transferred the idea to my modular system, splitting an F minor sixth chord across two sequencer channels, and clocking the channels at different rates (x2, x3). The sequencer (Qu-bit Bloom) generates 64 variations on this pattern, a s...
Flip your arps! Generating complex arpeggios with soft sync

This was incredible!
Just found your work because I just bought a Qu-Bit Bloom, which led me through several of your videos! Brilliant stuff!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much! And have fun with Bloom!
all cool, but why show modular with... piano samples?
Thanks, that’s a great question. I use a variety of sound sources in my studio: analog (Dixie, Banshee, etc), FM/wavetable/granular (Plaits etc), and, as you heard here, instrument samples. I’ve been faavoring samples in this “minimalism” series, because the focus is on sequencing. When my attention - and modules - are preoccupied up with complex pitch sequencing, samples can keep things simple (no envelopes, VCAs, or filters needed!). Sample players also allow us to generate highly complex timbres that would otherwise take a huge number of modules. Disting’s sample player further allows you to build up to 6 or 8 voices that all sound identical - thus giving the impression of a single, polyphonic instrument. The reason I’ve been selecting mainly piano samples is that this is the instrument used by many of the minimalist composers covered in this series (and because I can only barely play them on a real piano!). But also because the piano has certain psychoacoustic properties. It has a much wider range, both in terms of timbre and pitch, than many other instruments. And, as a result of cultural associations, it arguably evokes a wider range of emotions. Psychologists have explored the unconscious effects of piano sounds on listeners. And finally, I’m interested in the possibilities of altering piano samples via modular effects: delay, reverb, flanging, granular processing, and - in my next video - string resonators and detuning.
Very good, please do more 😊
Thanks, will do! 👍
Thank you so much for this series, looking forward to the next installment! and thank you for the grand piano disting samples!
No worries! Glad you're enjoying the series - and have fun with the samples!
Took a short break after receiving sad news and just wanted to be distracted. The Algo put this up. So very fitting, nice, beautiful and very interesting as a fellow modular wiggler (not so much misic knowledge though!) ANy way, down the rabbit hole we go. Now all I want is to get on the synth and try things. Will need to wait a bit though . Thanks anyway, see you in the rabbit hole.
So sorry to hear you've had sad news. I hope you find a way to get back on the synth soon and find solace in music.
This is great! Sounds good, and reminds me why I started modular... Need to keep on learning (from you ;-) and doing music! Thanks!
Thanks for watching. Good luck with your own music!
Thanks for your videos - this is why I got into modular!
Great to hear! Happy tweaking on your modular!
Absolutely beautiful! Bravo!
Thanks Jase!
Beautiful stuff! Always looks forward to your videos
That's so nice to hear. I'll try to keep them coming!
Woow, this is next level
Thanks!
I have been trying to learn modular music for about a year now. A lot of the content online is patch/module demos, or just absolute basic concepts. It has been a struggle to get over the plateau of knowing all of the basic info to practical and creative ways I can apply it to create original compositions rather than just recreating someone else's patch. These videos actually teaching music theory for modular music specifically have really helped my own artistic practice and start to break out of this plateau i have found myself in.
I'm so glad to hear that the videos have been useful for you. Enjoy your modular journey!
Fantastic once again! Really enjoying this stuff 😀
Thanks Tom, much appreciated!

Amazing stuff, so beautiful 🙏👌
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Stunning… simply stunning…
Thanks Andy!
Incredible. Loved the second patch. Have been fascinated by this module since it came out, wondering how I might replicate. Four sine waves, modulating freq, amount, phase...? Into VCV we go!
Thanks Rick, that's great to hear. And I love the idea of trying to replicate SP in VCV rack. I'd start with a full-wave rectification of a sine wave, then invert it, for a sharp peak and gentle trough. But as you reduce the gain, it should revert to a simple sine wave. Good luck!
@ thank you, will try!
Best modular channel on TH-cam. Keep it up. ❤
Wow, that's very kind indeed!
Man, I also love Become Ocean, a groundbreaking piece for sure.
Yes, I'd love to see a live performance some day!
Thank you for this video. I love SP and there isn’t enough about it online. You’ve inspired me to go use mine tonight :)
That’s great to hear! What kinds of things do you use yours for?
@ I’m using it with the 4ms swn right now and that’s all so far but I’m very excited to try it elsewhere :)
Another great, inspiring video. Well done.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
at first sight it looks kinda a hyped hippie thing, but when you listen to the results it´s a great module very "interstellar" music, with obvious memories of the water planet
those are not direct results, as this is a modulation source only
@@____.__._.._ I know, but I really dig the kind of movement it gives to those modulated parameters... it´s different than a regular LFO or even those with drift capabilites
Thanks for the comments. Yes, it's definitely not your standard LFO module. I tried initially to control it, but quickly released you have to let it just do its thing!
cool module, but 320Euro... seriously?
I think there's a lot going on under the hood!
Really incredible stuff! What alls happening when you're "churning up" the brass in the second half - filter cutoffs? Oscillator shape change?
Thanks! Yet, just modulation of the filter cutoffs (one output to each filter's frequency input). I hadn't thought to send them also to oscillator shape - that would have been good!
Fascinating 😊
Thanks Probbie!
Another masterpiece, bravo 👏 incredible work
Thanks, ondraJams - very kind!!
fantastic!
Thanks!
This is so beautiful. I could listen to this for hours and hours
Thanks so much for listening!
any plans to release this music? I would totally pay for a much longer version of the second piece in high quality audio
Cheers Guy! Yes, I'm planning to put some of these up on bandcamp, hopefully soon - thanks for your support!

Anybody making the connection between this and “Baba O’Riley” by The Who?
Thanks John, I know what you mean - especially the intro to that song. The name "o'Riley" is of course a reference to Terry Riley, who was one of Pete Townsend's inspirations.
this series is so informative and a joy to listen to - thank you!

finally good music on modular
Glad you liked it!
Nice to hear someone being musically constructive with modular than the usual bleepy knob twisting.
Thanks Jonathan, much appreciated!
Love this. I'm also very inspired by Part's techniques. I sometimes set up a mult from a single sequencer (or turing machine) into two quantizers (or Disting's dual quantizer), one quantizing the M to a fitting scale or sometimes a (minor) pentatonic and the other to the corresponding triad to generate a "automatic" T voice. In this way one can generate a tintinabuli-like "duet" using a dual oscillator like the Klavis Twin Waves or similar.
Thanks Lars, that's a great idea - and a reminder that you don't need a Disting EX to do quasi-tintinnabuli.
Really appreciating these vids ! FYI, the link to the hapi-xylophone samples is dead.
Thanks Robert, I'm glad to hear it. And thanks for letting me know - I'll fix the link now
Simply beautiful. You might have reduced the reverb just a bit more.
I can't resist the 'verb, man!
