Was the guitar removed from the case and impacted directly or was it in the case when the impact occurred?. What was the condition of the case in the area of the damage to the guitar? A typical case is made of plywood and it would have been deformed in some way - more than some latch loss. I’ll bet the plywood is shattered underneath. Was the case locked when given to the handler?

Unfortunately, you can't trust airlines, handlers, and unforeseen travel issues/conditions. On another note, there are many options for guitars that you can choose from to use for travel that don't have a heavy price tag but can perform and give you what you need to perform....then you can leave the valuable ones home.

Well..did you have it in a real road case? A hardshell?

This is heartbreaking. A guy once told me to always remove the endpin from my guitar when shipping or traveling with the guitar. I think that is a good idea when possible to do. Good luck with your guitar. I have had two Martin D35s. Someone robbed my home and took the first one back in the 80s. It was a 1976. I bought a new D-35 in 2001 I hope I never lose it.

Back in ‘07 I had to fly from LA back home to Montana. When I got home, I checked my guitar. To my surprise my guitar had been played! The sixth string was tuned down to drop D and had sweat stains all over the top. And, all the strings were dead from somebody’s sweaty hands along with a sticky neck!!!😡

The airlines have been rather disgusting about this sort of thing for quite some time now. Furthermore: You couldn't PAY ME to check one of my fine, expensive acoustic guitars with ANY airline. The ONLY exception would be if I bought A LOCKING FLIGHT CASE. AND I WOULD KEEP IT LOCKED. If the airline personnel insist on "inspecting the contents", they would have to do it in my presence, under my watchful eye. SHIPPING COMPANIES ARE JUST AS BAD NOWADAYS, IF NOT WORSE, FOR DAMAGED AND/OR PACKAGES THAT "DISAPPEAR" WITHOUT EVER REACHING THEIR DESTINATION. BOTH USPS AND UPS ARE BY FAR THE WORST ABOUT THEIR OWN EMPLOYEES STEALING PACKAGES THAT NEVER REACH THEIR DESTINATIONS. THE TRACKING NUMBERS FOR SAID PACKAGES PROVE THEY WERE NEVER DELIVERED, AND IT'S ALWAYS VERY EXPENSIVE ITEMS. TRUE STORY >>>> A little over a year ago, I shipped 9 VERY rare, desirable, and expensive American traditional pocket knives ( IN A BOX BIG ENOUGH TO HOLD A SOCCER BALL ) to a friend in Auburn Indiana, who has a legitimate business of selling knives on his youtube channel. I live in central Florida. He has sold many of my rare, expensive knives this way before, with great success. THEY ALWAYS SELL FOR MY ASKING PRICE. I had the 9 pocket knives priced for a total of $4,900.00. I used UPS because USPS stole a single $950 knife only months earlier. That single $950 knife tracked to Orlando Florida, and "disappeared". The 9 knives I shipped via UPS tracked to Jacksonville Florida, where they also "disappeared".......forever. I forced UPS to open 3 different investigations, and to tell ya the truth, I don't think they lifted a finger to investigate. So between USPS and UPS, I've been robbed of a grand total of $5,850.00 within a 14 month period. It was a huge loss for me. They would only insure up to $200.00. WARNING: As of a couple years ago, the Untied States Postal Service ( "USPS"......a federal agency ) REMOVED THE ABILITY OF THEIR POSTAL POLICE DETECTIVES TO INVESTIGATE ANY PACKAGES STOLEN FROM POSTAL WORKERS DURING SHIPMENT. I saw a report on the evening news, as they interviewed a long-time postal detective. He stated that the vast majority of his work was indeed, investigating stolen packages that never made their destination, catching the postal workers responsible for these thefts, and CHARGING THEM WITH A FEDERAL CRIME. In many of these cases, they were also able to recover the stolen items. He continued by saying: "When we were informed during a big meeting that we would no longer be investigation package thefts from criminal postal workers, I asked my superiors: "Then what are you paying us to do from this point forward?".......He said they responded by saying: "Your job now entails protecting all post offices from any possible terrorist activity".........end quote. I KID YOU NOT. Since then, I've been using ONLY Fed-ex to ship my expensive items. Their shipping rates cost more, but I guess that's what it takes for added security. So far, so good. But I've been told by reliable sources that even FED-EX has a few "bad employees who have been caught stealing packages containing valuable items". .........What's the world coming to??? My sage advice to anyone who needs to ship expensive items: Use ONLY Fed-ex, and pack your valuables IN A VERY LARGE, OVER-SIZED BOX. ( They can't use the excuse that "It must've slipped down a crevice or storm drain" like an envelope can. ) ALSO: INSIST ON THE SHIPPING LABEL TO BE COMPLETELY PROTECTED WITH CLEAR PACKING TAPE THAT WRAPS AROUND THE ENTIRE PACKAGE. This will make it impossible for the shipping label to "fall off" or "get damaged". The shippers love using these 2 excuses: "The shipping label must have either fallen off, or was damaged".

Baggage handlers are nasty, vindictive b*****ds. There is film of baggage handlers throwing guitars around, allowing them to deliberately crash onto the tarmac.

A Nashville "A" list guitar slinger told me years ago; don't fly with your best instruments. Find a good/cheap road axe and get it set-up to match your baby.

Smashed a silvertone when i was a kid,and had a gretzch acoustic guitar stollen out of the highschool band room. I never dropped a guitar and never neglected or abused any of my instruments after i learned to play better and got better instruments

Take something comparable,but cheaper on a flight like an eastman guitar.

Great work Dan and Cindy. One of the wonderful things about wood is that in the hands of a Master Craftsman/Repairman, with patience and time, even extensive damage caused by the Airlines can repaired.

There's little excuse for it other than greed. As repair guy alluded to People accept lower and lower standard service for same costs.

Cheap guitars sound good enough, most can't tell the difference.

I saw Charlie McCoy and the Escorts play at a teen club in Chattanooga, TN. The band was all Nashville studio players. with Kenny Buttery on drums and Mac Gayden on guitar. As a young musician watching them was a treat and a lesson. They played covers, a lot of Motown songs. There was a tenor sax player and a trombone player and minds were blown when Charlie who would be singing lead,while playing bass with one hand ,and he would sometimes pick up a trumpet,harmonica, or play a small combo organ.

Don't complain about the DEI hire, hey he/she is at least working and if you think you don't need to complain about that baggage handler the pilots going to really make you happy, plus the baggage handler gave Dan some work.

These airline MFs need to be held accountable. This really is heartbreaking. I’m speechless and can’t describe how this video triggered me.
