New Information About How The Getty Villa Survived the Fire
I go over a few interesting details that I didn't know when I made my first video on this subject. I also discuss the broader social-political implications of fire prevention in California: Who has access to the limited resources for fighting fire? How do we allocate these resources? What are the risks of implementing the most effective strategies? How do average people seem to feel about the residents of the Palisades? About protecting museums?

How did the Getty escape the Palisades Fire?
มุมมอง 10114 วันที่ผ่านมา
On January 7, 2025, the worst fires in LA's history tore through Palisades, Malibu, Altadena and Pasadena. Right in the burn path was the Getty Villa - home to more than 44,000 priceless works of art from Ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. If these had been lost, humanity would have lost significant chunk of our shared cultural heritage. But the designers of the Villa knew what they were doing,...

    I remember a time a firestorm was approaching our neighborhood and I decided to stay during a mandatory evacuation in case I could extinguish spot fires that may flare up on the house. I was called for hours by family members who vociferously implored me to leave, but I decided in my circumstances it would be more prudent for me to stay. My understanding is if you decide to disregard a mandatory evacuation order you are then on your own and cannot expect rescue after that point.

    I built houses for 45 years and one time I built a house for an engineer who had me install piping on his roof and around the eaves of the home. These were 1/2" copper pipes with small holes drilled into them every few inches. He dug a pond in his backyard and filled it with water and installed a pump that would be turned on and the pipes would spray water on the roof and walls of his house. The reason he went to all of this trouble was because the house was in the middle of a forest and was surrounded by tall pines trees. He also raked the pine needles up and planted ground cover around his house. A few years ago there was a wildfire in that part of the country and I drove by there just to see if the house was affected. The trees around the house were burned up pretty good but the house didn't have a scratch on it. This was years ago and the other day I saw a video about a system just like the one I installed on the man's home.

    Diogenes famously lived naked inside a giant wine barrel, suggesting the central figure/s are a form of self reflection. A rugged setting including damaged trees, ancient ruins, aimlessly wandering animals, corpses and junk could serve as an allegory of civilisation abandoned to wild nature and corruption. The lamp is a rhetorical tool that serves to cast an imaginary spotlight on what is already in plain sight, revealing the absurd pretence of humanity's delusions of grandeur. Percy Blysshe Shelley, author of the famous poem 'Ozymandius,' ("Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay / Of that colossal Wreck...") was influenced by Diogenes and came under government surveillance for seditious libel because of his outspoken political views. Could he have taken inspiration from Castiglione's painting?

    "Wokeism" is not actually a thing. It's made up. "Woke" to the Black community means only one thing: recognizing systemic racism, and violence against non-white people. It's no wonder white nationalists have made it a buzz word, and muddied its meaning. Their propaganda tactics are used to lead smart people into a path of confusion and resistance and value being "anti-woke" aka "asleep" or "ignorant." Men who fear of having entitlements taken away are the most vulnerable. So conversations like this are great, and need to continue. I was moved by the part where you both said you'd lost friends who were more far left than yourselves. That's painful. But you have to understand that progressives really are serious about human rights, and at some point need to filter out people who pick at that. Anti-wokism is a tool of the alt right, even though it makes sense to you if you haven't read the books they want to ban, especially if you want to diminish the pain of those who have been harmed. Anti-woke people cannot call themselves anti-racist. If you are not against systemic racism, then you collude with implicitly. It's an intellectual exercise to some and survival to others. I can't think of more woke (compassionate) ideologies than Atheism or Christianity. (Christ-ism, not fundamentalism.) Keep evolving this conversation. IMHO you both sound totally woke and just hung up on words. 'Murca has just elected a fascist for real who intends to cause real harm to real people. We have to come together and stop picking each other apart intellectually. (I only had time for 45 minutes so maybe you reached that point yourself.)

    Indigenous Peoples day is an effort to make up for the harm done. Big Balls day is hilarious tho, it should be a thing! And thank you for including women in that category LOL! And we should have big balls on that day (as in parties of course!) Miller definitely had 'em! So did his girlfriends Miriam Leslie, Ina Coolbrith, Adah Isaacs Menken, and Lily Langtry. And no, btw, loving Native Americans doesn't make you racist. XD <3 Racism is systemic, it's about laws that give one race an advantage over others, and, well, there have been a LOT of those! I have heard that people can be bigoted but they can't be racist.

    I enjoyed this very much. I answered a question on Quora about Ukiyo-e artists, and I included her "Night Scene in the Yoshiwara." Here's what I wrote: "This one left me stunned the first time I saw it, and it still leaves me staggered because it’s brilliant in concept and execution in capturing an evening where the lanterns shimmer from both within the brothel and around it so that the scene becomes a great drama, a marvelous moment in time caught and illuminated brilliantly; the people stand about, their kimonos rendered in subtle weaves and designs, studying the prostitutes - and don’t confuse prostitutes with geisha, they’re not the same - some with interest, others simply gawking with curiosity; the slats both separate the inner from the outer, engaging our own glance with a desire to see more - this is a masterpiece, in my opinion." Four years and one thousand views later has resulted in six upvotes. I really can't fathom what people are about anymore. I'm not saying my answer deserves more views or more upvotes, but, darn it, her work does. But, again, thanks.

    "nee" was not Draper's wife's nickname or middle name. It means "formerly". Mrs. Draper's maiden name was "Williams". Draper died of arteriosclerosis which is "hardening of the arteries", a vascular condition characterized by abnormal thickening, hardening, and loss of elasticity of the walls of arteries. It gradually restricts the blood flow to one's organs and tissues and can lead to severe health risks brought on by atherosclerosis, which is a specific form of arteriosclerosis caused by the buildup of fatty plaques, cholesterol, and some other substances in and on the artery walls (it can be brought on by smoking, a bad diet, or many genetic factors).

    Hi! o/ Happy to contribute to the conversation over this beautiful painting. I do have criticisms, but I would appreciate them being taken in good faith as constructive. My first criticism: While you have made a previous video on this painting, to the uninitiated viewer, you don't present your argument with an introduction of the piece first. The viewer isn't told its name, the artist's name, the date it was painted, its history, or why you chose this particular piece to discuss. Nor are these things listed in your description, though you've pinned the previous video introducing it in the comments. As a suggestion, you can make it easier for the viewer and make your, "Here," in the introduction seem less out of place by going to: Your Channel > Selecting this Video > Selecting Edit under its title > Selecting Editor on the left > Inserting an Info Card. The Info Card can be placed anywhere on the timeline you want and you can link to your own videos with it. Hope this helps! 🥰 My second criticism: Without an introduction to this piece and its history, opening with your opinion on whether it should 1) be permitted to exist in public view and 2) be celebrated after suggesting it not be destroyed sets up the viewer to align with your opinion over crafting a strong argument that sways them on its merit. I was immediately questioning, "Well, who is trying to hide it? Who is trying to destroy it?" Your phrasing makes it seem like this is an imminent threat. How so? Who or what is threatening its destruction? Is there a real-life parallel that can support this argument? Thought experiments are fine, but you'll have a stronger case responding to an actual argument instead of strawmanning extreme positions. My third criticism: You go on to say your own position may once have been aligned with liberals and nowadays seems more aligned with conservatives, but you offer no supporting explanation as to what these positions entail, when they shifted, or why they shifted. That sounds interesting and could potentially be a video on its own. What do you take to be the liberal or conservative position on the (destruction/preservation/display of art?)? When did it change? Where is your supporting evidence? What is the "leftwing objection?" Objection toward what? It's unclear. Your example with the nymphs is a good one, but it's followed by an objection you "imagine" others to have. A better approach may have been to find a parallel example toward another art piece and extend it to this one. 🌟🌟🌟I don't want to overload you with criticisms, so, a positive! 🌟🌟🌟You nailed your explanation of liberal versus leftist. Too many people conflate these. 👏However, the step back into "Ultra-Liberal = Uber-Leftist" is unnecessary. You've defined the distinction, trust your audience to follow.

    • @betterbarbariansbureau5398
      @betterbarbariansbureau5398 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First - I'm so sorry for the lateness of this response! I really appreciate you taking the time to craft all these well-articulated statements, and for the politeness of your criticisms. I agree with everything in your first paragraph; I even realized (too late) that this was a major flaw in my video. I was not aware I could insert a card after publishing - I will try to follow the directions you left - thank you for that! I think you're also mostly correct in your points in the second paragraph, with the exception of: I do think that my discussion of the controversy surrounding the Waterhouse painting (Hylas and the Nymphs) is sufficient by way of an example; everything alleged to that painting could be alleged to Draper's. However, you are correct that my argument would have been stronger if I had given an example of an artwork like this being under threat of destruction. I made a video about the activists why smashed the glass on the Rokeby Venus - I think this (and many other such instances, lately) is a good example, expecially because the Rokeby Venus was chosen expressly because it had been slashed with a razor by a suffragette, previously (apparently for the same reason of my posited objection from the left). But here again, I am guilty of assuming that it was enough to have made a previous video, and I should have made it explicit. As to my personal journey through political orientations... whew! That would require a lot of courage, because I would probably alienate half of the audience I'm trying to build. I thought if I could be brave enough to just say some slightly controversial things in was that was not condescending to the other side, then at least I am exercising some small bit of courage. Anyway - I was also trying to point out that allegiance to art and creative freedom is not inherently a right-wing or left-wing position - it can be either, depending on the cultural moment. Re: Uber-leftist vs Ultra-liberal - I also agree with your statement: "You've defined the distinction, trust your audience to follow." - that was very well stated! Alas, you make mostly fair criticisms, and I can only give my sheepish answer: I have such small slivers of time in which to make these videos... I know I could do better, if I had more time. Hopefully I will, one day! Thanks for your attention and thoughtfulness.

    I'm curious to know what left-leaning media you engage with that actively disparages motherhood. Most of the leftist content I engage with barely touches the issue at all, except in terms of abortion and healthcare rights, and the fact that it's excessively expensive to be a parent right now. It's a bit disappointing to see someone provide the barest whisper of anecdotal evidence that the American left is antinatalist, and defend it by citing the idea of lived experience . . . which you then disparage. This is a very poorly expressed set of arguments, and should have been edited again, both for clarity and for accuracy.

    • @betterbarbariansbureau5398
      @betterbarbariansbureau5398 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Thanks for expressing your disagreements politely. I appreciate the clarity of your argument. As to citing anecdotal evidence; I chose one powerful example rather than a litany of examples because (I think) anecdotal evidence never will be sufficient to convince anyone who is already firmly opposed to your thesis. As to which left-leaning outlets I pay attention to... I'm tempted to list them out, as well, just to give bona-fides, but... the biggest dose of anti-natalist messages are delivered through film and shows, music and books, etc. Almost all of these tend to be left-leaning these days. Also - remember - I said that the explicitly stated anti-natalist view is extremist, and most leftists would not endorse it when explicitly stated. It is affect and attitude that primarily influences people.

    hey, uh, just a note: birth control & family planning are in no kinda way a modern phenomenon. the pill technology is new, but birth control has been practiced since the dawn of humanity, there's evidence of birth control from 1850s _BCE_ the struggle really is real & eternal and wanting to be able to control when/if you reproduce is not inherently anti-natalist? also the desire to separate femininity from an inherently maternal impulse is not the same thing as rejecting the role of motherhood. you make a lot of leaps here, idk if you checked your work
