Great research and presentation. I laughed and was intrigued, and appreciated all your insights and opinions. I have a new appreciation for her work. Thank you!
Thank you so much - and so sorry for the extremely late reply! I poured so much into that video that I think I needed a long break from TH-cam after uploading it! lol - But I'm so glad it gave you a greater appreciation for her amazing artwork. That's the goal! :)
I’m currently doing an art project on Oi for school and I’ve been struggling to shake off the sense of injustice this entire time😭 thank you for making this amazing video not just for the information but satisfying that need for public appreciation for her works through your excitement and passion!☺️
I enjoyed this very much. I answered a question on Quora about Ukiyo-e artists, and I included her "Night Scene in the Yoshiwara." Here's what I wrote: "This one left me stunned the first time I saw it, and it still leaves me staggered because it’s brilliant in concept and execution in capturing an evening where the lanterns shimmer from both within the brothel and around it so that the scene becomes a great drama, a marvelous moment in time caught and illuminated brilliantly; the people stand about, their kimonos rendered in subtle weaves and designs, studying the prostitutes - and don’t confuse prostitutes with geisha, they’re not the same - some with interest, others simply gawking with curiosity; the slats both separate the inner from the outer, engaging our own glance with a desire to see more - this is a masterpiece, in my opinion." Four years and one thousand views later has resulted in six upvotes. I really can't fathom what people are about anymore. I'm not saying my answer deserves more views or more upvotes, but, darn it, her work does. But, again, thanks.
I enjoyed this one enormously. Western art history content (and academia) tend to neglect the far east, and it's left a massive gap in my understanding of asian art. You're a good presenter and a good writer, and this has tons of new googleable words that I will be dedicating my Saturday to. I know the algorithm is not favoring this one, but that does not in any way reflect the quality of your work. Girl Composing A Poem is phenomenal, and I can't believe I've never run into it before.
I think the reason behind her father sending her to study under another master is a cultural thing, nothing personal. If you watch any BTS videos of Japanese restaurants or food stalls there’s usually a young part timer working there who’s father owns a similar type of restaurant but the kid is encouraged to learn from another place for a period of time as some sort of tutelage apprenticeship area before coming back to take over the fathers restaurant. Maybe see some of Paolo’s “day in the life” videos about Japanese restaurants
❤Thank you so much for making this video about her! Oei and her father are so inspiring. I've had a love affair with ukiyo-e since childhood. You were very thorough. 🥰🫡👍
