How and where do you get the templates for the holds ? Or do you just come up with them
I just come up with the designs and if I like the result I will use it as an template in the future.
@wurfttobias cool. Thanks I have been thinking about making my own I am a woodworker myself. Great stuff by the way
how much did this wall cost you without the holds? video inspired me to try and make one for myself but im unsure about the cost
Since I finished this project years ago, I can't remember the exact number but I remember that I have answered this question at least once in the comments.:)
Guter Tipp! Danke dir.
You're incredible for releasing this information for free. Legend.
Gorgeous. Any plans to have them for sale?
Thanks, Derek! I just replied to your email.
What is that piece you attached to grinder at carving
Not sure exactly which tool you're referring to. I explain all the tools I use in this video: th-cam.com/video/frcskH2AZGk/w-d-xo.html
Thanks dude! This inspired me to make a few basic holds out of scrap wood. Describing what kind of tools you use and how you use them is extremely helpful.
You're welcome. Thanks for sharing and enjoy climbing on your own holds
Looks amazing, would you ever try a multi-axis CNC process? Not easy to get access to those I suppose..
Yes, I have milled holds on a CNC. It's shown at the end of this video: th-cam.com/video/1zIFWG3X1DU/w-d-xo.html Still working on separate video that only covers how I have milled holds on a CNC.
so awesome
This video inspired me to make holds for my home wall. I didn't write "TOP" on the wood block until I messed up and made mirrored shape from what I wanted 😛. I use 60 grit sandpaper grinding flap disk to carve hold into a shape. It takes more time, but it is much safer and my holds aren't that big - no more than 20 cm.
Do you have a bandsaw blade you would recommend for holdmaking. Like what tooth per inch/ width?
This isn't just hold making. It's also art making! Your holds are truly gorgeous. ❤🔥
Thank you very much!
Really interesting and informative video! Thanks a lot.
absolutely fantastic, I would like to buy your small set 1 when it comes back in stock!
Do you have a guide that’s better for beginners (or rather just a cheaper more beginner tool set) I didn’t want to spend more than 300 dollars on tool because I was hoping making my own holds would be a bit more budget friendly (although I can always sell holds). Thanks and great video.
Thanks! I uploaded this video a couple of years ago, where I shape more basics holds: th-cam.com/video/vpCxIB5dMug/w-d-xo.html
I absolutely love these shapes! Hope you’re doing well bro!
Thanks, bro! I'm good! Just not much time for shaping right now. Hope you're doing well, too!
Those holds are SO BEAUTIFUL 😍
Thank you!
How to make holds with more grip for beginners and kids? And how do you color them without making them too slippery? And what do you do to increase their life, oil?
You can add more grip by layering epoxy floor paint with super fine sand, the same way like texturing the plywood for climbing walls. I've never colored any wood, I'm just using different species of wood. If you're using wooden holds indoors, they typically last much longer than conventional holds because conventional holds are at some point polished. With wooden holds, you can always use a piece of sandpaper and the holds are almost brand-new after sanding.
❤ hi, thank you for making this! I used it to build a climbing wall for my son.
That's awesome!
Amazing! can you make another soon 👀👀
Thanks! Do you mean another video, or another pair of holds to sell?
@@wurfttobias A video of course!
@@zynthrex1 There are a couple of videos in the pipeline and I've already started editing. But it will take a while... :)
do you know how to add friction grip to the hold? some wooden holds have it like 'dualtex''. thx
I haven't done it myself but typically it's done by using multiple layers of epoxy floor paint and add some really fine sand in between. Basically the same way textured climbing walls are typically made.
What width do you suggest for bandsaw blade?
I prefer a 6 to 10 mm wide blade with 6 to 10 teeth per inch.
Is it worth the cost (I mean 4 walls, rubber, etc.) ? I don't get the feeling that a simple cabinet would be much less effective, am I honestly wrong?
It depends. If the CNC is running in a workshop with other noisy tools, you should only build something to keep the dust in. But if it's running 12 hours every day and it shouldn't disturb your workmates/family/neighbors, it will be worth it after a few days.
Do you think a 4 inch belt sander would get the job done? I'm also looking at getting a Used 14 inch bandsaw.
I have used both. A 4 inch belt sander is definitely useful for smaller holds, but a 6 inch wide belt makes a huge difference.
Thanks for the Reply I'll definitely go for this 6"
Hi Tobias, thank you for all of the information you've shared on this process! I'm working on a roofed outdoor home wall and have been making holds using hardwood offcuts. I'm looking for a finish I could use on the holds to help bring out the beauty of the wood and give some protection against varying humidity without ruining the surface texture for climbing. Do you have any experience with finishes on your climbing holds?
Sounds like a great project. Unfortunately, I have barely any experience with finishes, just tried oil on two pairs of holds. I don't think you can maintain the wooden texture with any finish that protects the wood against humidity. The open-porous structure of the wood makes it breath and absorb some of the humidity of sweaty fingertips. This makes wood unique when it comes to climbing holds.
Ah! I know this video is old. I’m in NZ but where did you get all the rubber material from?

Hi Tobias! Very nice job! Did you find an alternative to mini carver? The power carver in the video looks different from the usual mini carver by Arbortech...
Thanks, Marco! This is still the mini carver. It might look a little bit different because the video is cropped in?
@@wurfttobias thank you mate! I saw you using the mini carver in many proj and today i decided to bought the complete mini carver set! I think it will improve my workflow when i am about to remove a lot of material during the shaping phase of my holds. Thank you so much for sharing your huge experience! 👌🏻
@marcostorchi2752 That's great! I hope you will enjoy the process of learning to shape with a new tool!
Gorgeous sloper. 🔥
Thanks!
Do you find that the countersink bolts are strong enough on the wood? I’m debating using countersink bolts on bare wood like you or going with flat bolts and washers. The countersink looks nicer in my opinion
I started using countersunk bolts because all the wooden moonboard holds use them as well (so I assume the majority of the wooden climbing holds sold worldwide). I think, for climbing holds it doesn't matter that the countersunk bolts only have a load capacity between 2-3 tons instead of 3-5 tons. There are advantages for countersunk bolts: self-centering, larger contact area (less stress for the wood), reduced protrusion. Advantages for normal bolts: cheaper, easier to drill I personally prefer the look of countersunk bolts and don't like to use additional washers. In my experience, countersunk bolts are also less likely to break holds made out of softer wood because of the larger contact area.
most beautiful thing i’ve ever seen oh my gosh does the multiple types of wood in a hold only for visual purposes?
Thanks, appreciate it! The laminated holds should be stronger and basically impossible to break. Furthermore, I can use much cheaper, thinner boards.
Awesome stuff. I started making my own holds recently based on your videos. For those that are in the US, I found a cheaper replacement to the carvers vice at harbor freight. The articulated vacuum vise is only $20, with a similar feature to be able to move around the workpiece while carving.
Many thanks. Your design has given me the confidence to build one for my son. I've just finished it and can now get on with the setting.
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Do you use any metal inserts for the bolt hole?
No, you don't need them when using countersunk bolts. But I would recommend using them in combination with normal bolts.
Nope, way over engineered
There's nothing complicated going on here. You might wanna look up the definition of "overengineered";)
15:08 Love this part...
😂🙈
These look great. Looking forward to the cnc video
Thanks, appreciate it!
All the video ideas you mentioned sound awesome. Particularly interested in the shaping videos (how you come up with shapes/ visualize them and then create them). Your holds look awesome! Love the videos!
Thanks for your feedback and input, appreciate it!
wooow....awesome !...
Nice work! They look so nice
Thanks, appreciate it!
Do you apply any finishes such as oil? Or would that make the hold slippery?
I've oiled the top surface of a few holds in the past, just for looks. Wouldn't recommend oiling the grip area because that makes them slippery. I also sand the holds when doing a complete reset. They are basically brand new afterwards, but this won't work with oil or any other finish.
you dont put washers??
No, I don't think you need them when working with medium to hard hardwood. Since I'm using countersunk screws (plus optional countersunk bolts), it doesn't make sense. Any sort of washer will increase the local pressure and stress on the wood.
@@wurfttobias thanks men your videos helps alot on my project
@@parkour457 you're welcome!
How long does the colour last
Depends on the conditions. If the wood stays dry, it will last at least for years (haven't tested it any longer), if it gets wet, it's like with any other wood: it darkens or will get grey. So I guess if you seal it, it will stay like that. By the way, the whole process of turning purple happens naturally. It just takes longer (typically days to weeks)
Dang, I was just about to speculate about other woods that would become richer in colour with heat, but most don't naturallt do it over time!
Proud owner of some Wurft holds. Great work!
Thanks, Markus! I appreciate it.

com certeza é bem barato fazer uma agarra assim... eu achando que seria dica pra climber quebrado de din coroi
