Have you never probed the Retro Instruments Doublewide 500 Series Tube Compressor??? doest it the same? thanks
@@urielterry I’ve never used it but trusted friends of mine that have compared them say it’s not similar. Not bad just not a sta level
@ thank you
i think not analog. But good plugin :)
Compressiors can make you sound like your breathing louder
@@barrygeary1890 hey definitely can! That’s why I always clip gain down my breaths if I’m able to before heavy compression and even after
FIRST MIXING WITH A LOT OF PLUGIN DO NOT MAKE YOU A PROFESSIONAL ..I HAVE USED 16YEARS 7HOURS EVERYDAY TESTING PLUGINS..I CAN TELL YOU NOT ONLY THAT I KNOW AUDIO COMPANIES SOUND SIGNATURES BY EAR ONLY ..I KNOW HOW THEY MAKE IT THROUGH CODES.. THERE ARE SOME PLUGINS YOU DONT EVEN KNOW ABOÙT TRUST ME THAT I KNOW... BUT IF YOU'RE COMING FROM THE POINT OF ANALOG HARDWARES.. YOU USE 4-5 EQ, 4-5 COMPRESSOR.. IN 10YEARS BENEFITS IS THAT YOU KNOW THE HARDWARE IN AND OUT.. SOMEONE LIKE ME... ALREADY HAVE VST THAT THOSE THE JOB EVEN WITHOUT WASTING TIME .. BUT IT TAKES TIME TO LEARN PROPERLY IF YOU ARE WILLING TO TAKE THE TIME ITS FINE. REMEMBER VSTS COME OUT NOW EVERYDAY ..MOST ARE THE UPDATED VERSIONS.. ITS EASIER FOR ME TO PICK WHAT IS BETTER AND NOT GET LOST IN VST MODERN MARKETING WHICH IMPLIES YOU ARE STILL GETTING SAME EQ OR COMPRESSOR WITH A NEW GUI FROM DIFFERENT VST COMPANIES.. BE A MASTER IN FEW AND BE CREATIVE BY SPENDING TIME ON WHAT'S NECESSARY. FORGET THE VST EXCITEMENTS.
Very informative! Thanks! Cheers

Question: What stops us to actually use this every channel? It doesn't use too much CPU either.
@@claudianreyn4529 absolutely nothing! I’ve tried it before on a mix hahah, it also has some cool subtle box tone
Hey man loved the video! Adding time stamps for drums, guitars, vocals, etc. 3 hours a bit a much for one sit down with me and I would like to go to the instrument where I am currently learning.
Thanks so much man I’m glad you enjoyed it! I did actually add timestamps I don’t know why TH-cam is refusing to have them populate on the video but they’re in the description
You should do a video on wat to use the clipper on and how to get loudness
1. Good arrangement 2. Good sound selection/good tones when recording 3. Good performances by good musicians 4. Saturation/clipping on transient material 5. Mixbus compression + waveshaping
@@JoeyFTL if i could do all that i wouldnt have to make it loud to cover up my crappyness
@@JoeyFTLexactly! I could probably just do a video talking about that briefly lol. Also just bringing the fader up is the unspoken secret of loudness people forget about 😂
I gotta say….you are correct….it seems like the compressor being on sounds way more 3D and the instruments hug the vocal much more with the compressor on….i don’t have you on my monitors or headphones right now but being a mixer I know how to listen…..even on my TV speakers I can hear the difference. It’s as if it creates a pocket for the vocal to drop into.
@@vektacular that’s a great way to describe it!
love how it glues i got the dangerous compressor but man i love this one
@@shevyjohn9308 yeah same I still use it on every mix it’s so good!
Great vid… what control surface are you running?
@@J.WingedLion thanks so much, it’s the avid s3!
Most of the times what I find is that doing less with more plugins leads to wrose sounding results than doing bolder moves with way less plugins. If you need another eq or sixth eq band maybe reconsider the choices you've made with your previous eq and the placement of that eq in the chain (after the compressor makes the tone more stable than before the compressor). The minimalistic approach as on the real SSL or NEVE or API console most of the times gives the best sounding results. You're omitting the added harmonic and phase distortion, another stages of up and downsampling (oversampling filters) + if you're dealing with revisions it's really easy to change something quickly (because less things are influencing each other in the chain). Of course sometimes it's necessary to add another eq or something like soothe to polish the sound just a bit more but I recommend to leave it as a cheery on top after having 99% done with the simple tools and broad, bold eq and compression moves. So for example give that vocal 6-9dB lift in the top and 4dB lift in the bottom + some 3dB dip in the mids broadly like on SSL 9k for example instead of doing 15 smaller and narrower boosts and cuts with 3 or 4 eqs. I can guarantee it will sound much better Also compressing with more plugins makes the sound only more muddy and dirty because of added distortion, it's better to use one or maybe 2 compressors maximum on a track and manually ride the track with the automation to fill the gaps and if you need more density you can add some saturation plugin and blend some even and odd harmonics until you achieve the texture of the sound which feel the best for the song
@@huberttorzewski when less is more and it works yeah for sure! I find that doing less with more plugins that you very specifically with a specific purpose goes a long way and results in the most maximized results of a sound source. I personally love stacking multiple compressors. The attack and release times as well as the mojo added when done correctly allows you to sculpt things that otherwise wouldn’t really be achievable. Thats why I mention you kind of have to experience doing too much and over processing sounds and experience the less is more approach to land in this “more of less” approach
@@david_djent I guess I'm more CLA's mixing style advocate haha. Big, bold moves on the individual channels (if needed - most of the times the answer is yes) + only minimal processing on the mix bus. I've tried "more of less" approach 8-9 years ago for like 3 years and listening to it today I don't like how it sounded that much. I can hear all of that added muddiness from the plugins and some weird things going on in the midrange
@@huberttorzewski I guess I’d say I’m that way in the first few moves I make! I think I’m more advocating for once you make those big bold moves, not being afraid to squeeze that last 5% out of a really quality sound source even if it take a bunch of super tiny moves
@@david_djent ahh ok sure, I agree!

Dude this track and the mix sounds SICK! Interesting to see that having 4 bass tracks running, glued and blended quite well with the rhythms without much carving etc
@@tatepaul3947 thanks man I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Yeah the whole bass thing was paradigm shift for me when I first tried it
Say it louder for the ones in the back👏
Also, “booty cheese” 😂😂
@@RobinZV1 it’s just a regular part of my vernacular for whatever reason 😂💀
So what is the advantage of bouncing all your tracks to individual wav/mp3s and then mixing from there instead of just mixing from what you recorded in samples/guitar and vocal tracks? I feel it's pointless to dump 30-50 or more tracks to individual wav/mp3 before editing. Maybe this allows for more plugins before locking up your computer but I don't have that many plugins I use anyways.
@@Radio-Spirit-Music I think you may have misunderstood! It’s not bouncing the tracks and baking them in, it’s consolidating the regions/clips for tracks that may have a bunch of edit points and cuts. The main idea is to just organize everything and make your session manageable 🤙 You should be bouncing down effects and production based things though, an example would be like a vocal delay throw or special guitar effect transition and things like that. Commiting your sounds is really important
simple yet EFFECTIVE advice dude ✊ i don’t even mix but these tips can be applied to any of the timelines i’ve worked on. it really does help those creative juices flow much easier while also cultivating efficiency. to this day, i feel like i’m booty cheese when creating. but we getting there, dedicated to learning and loving the craft. these tips can really help make everyone feel on the right track during edits, mixes, etc. keep it up bro 🖤

@@Battosai thanks brother I’m glad you enjoyed it! Also curious, what do you think of the thumbnail? CTR right now is not good at all lol
@@david_djent i prefer a less is more approach but that’s really just preference. i think for this style of video your thumbnail makes sense, but the talking head shots you have are more eye catching imo. that youtube studio app be the death of me 😂 cause i feel that click through rate being low. but it’s all part of the process. try not to sweat it too much, our time will come. just keep creating and you will catch fire, i know it. you have all the tools and production level to take this really far.
Nothing special about it, mostly a hype because of Serban. He can do a world class mix with stock plugins. Doesn’t sound bad I tried it but will not replace Oxford inflator.
@@deerejohn1507 yeah no one is saying this will give you a Serban mix, but you can’t get the same last percent he does without it cause it is its own sound
And yet the music track is several dB louder (and in timbre) than your spoken voice.
how's this any different than all the other pulteq style eq's
@@nateknowles4 the curves are different to start, which is quite a significant indicator of the characteristic of an EQ. I posted the curves here in the video and you can google pultec curves which are not the same. You could ab this verses a pultec and determine which one fits your needs
Are you level matching?
@@urbanman1516 no, I mention in the video that I am not and that I don’t believe in doing that when using an EQ since the entire premise of an EQ is to boost or cut gain
@@david_djent The only way to make a true comparison between the processed and unprocessed sound is to ensure that the plugin's input and output levels match. You can't get away from that no matter how you justify it.
@@urbanman1516 well I strongly disagree with you. You would never do that in a real world scenario, I for one would never do that. It makes sense to do that with compression and saturation, but in my opinion it’s nonsensical to level match what you EQ. I’m showing how I would use the plugin and where I would arrive. I’ll never be one of those overly scientific channels, im a very pragmatic and real world scenario kind of guy just showing what I would do on a mix in working on for a client
@@david_djent Nothing overly scientific about level matching. It's very basic knowledge recognized by anyone doing professional mixing. While I might agree there's not always a need to level match when cutting, boosting is a different story. Volume is an enhancer effect, as is boosting an EQ. If you don't remove the volume effect, you have two effects applied at the same time. If that's your desired creative purpose, then go for it, but If you want an accurate judgement of the EQ effect ONLY, you must remove the volume effect. In your video, you're clearly trying to demonstrate how good the EQ sounds regards it's pure tonal quality. If that's the case, you need to remove the volume effect or else the listener is prone to being fooled.
@@urbanman1516 And just 0.1 to 0.2dB overall gain is enough to fool people.
Nice! Def shows off its capabilities
@@RobinZV1 thanks man!

Right? Super musical
Dopeeeee
Thanks for your help bro!

Thanks so much!
Thanks my man
When you put bx console N and mbsi into plug-in doctor the curves are the same and distortion is slightly different. Not sure if that matters or not but it is interesting.
We need short vids of you mixing on the yamaha dm7 at FFC plss:)
The music used for the demonstration is not the best to really test the plugin. All we get is more saturation on an already heavily distorted track.
@@themotownboy1 this is just how I would use the tool! I would argue that hearing it on a more distorted and saturated track will let you hear where its limits are a lot quicker and will let you hear its own distortion characteristics versus a cleaner track, but again this is just what I would do 🙂
Your little bit at the end about using this with busses is really a lightbulb moment for me for live sound. I'm always having to be so careful about blending the vocals with the instruments but using sidechain compression and expansion makes a ton of sense to help reduce my time riding the vocal bus fader
@@kronik907 I’ve been wanting to do it live! We just don’t have the full super rack soundgrid we moved ours at the church to broadcast and FOH is just using super rack performer with only vocals going through. I’d love to be doing this live sidchaining the guitars and instrument bus to the vocals, those guitars eat up so much headroom
@@david_djent I do the broadcast mix live to video for my church on a Wing, and the wing has a built in 3 band compressor/expander that takes up an FX slot, or a single band compressor/expander that can replace the built in gate slot on any channel or bus without taking up an effects slot. Both options can accept a sidechain trigger from a different channel or bus. I'm already trying to work through exactly how I would set things up, but I'm excited about how I can best use those slots to help glue my mix together better.
@@kronik907 ahhh I see, I’m on the DM7 and most of our DSP real estate is used up but I may look at reallocating inserts to use the multiband comp on there
Man I’m a maximalist when it comes to mixing for sure, but 11 plugins on a kick group is fucking insane
@@benjaminhixson3918 everything is there for a reason! At the end of the day all that matters is if it sounds good, the client and the audience isnt gonna care if you used 1 plug-in or 20 of them
