Two Off-Peak NJ Transit Commuter Trains at Dover station 11/7/24
Train #853 is one of the only handful of diesel trains out of Hoboken that go beyond Dover, NJ to either Lake Hopatcong, Mount Olive, or Hackettstown. Train #6656 is one of the many daily Midtown Direct services to New York City. Here, it's seen exiting the yard to begin its trip to New York as 853 pulls in.

Hello! On Sunday, November 3rd, I randomly decided to head to Westwood, NJ to go explore the town and in the process I decided to film 2 of the handful of trains per weekend on NJ Transit's Pascack Valley Line. First up is a traditional local headed north to Spring Valley, NY. Then, one of the 3 super-express trains flies by running express to Pearl River, NY. That's all from me, everyone! See ...

Impressive diesels to say the least. I love em! Great to know a couple are still on the White Pass & Yucatan railroad in Alaska, which I didn't know even if I had seen them on other videos.

UM20B looks to share some styling design DNA with Alco's PA-1'S and FA-1's
Those UM20s have the same body shape as Alco’s FA series of freight units. Another little known GE loco is the UD18. A small group were built that went to the NdeM railroad in Mexico. They were 1,800 HP and looked like an Alco RS11 with noses that looked like the original U25B demonstaters.
Fine video and I like short videos. Too many TH-cam contributors are making their videos much too long. 👍
MO-PAC AND GM&O MENTIONED!!!
I never heard of this engine, but those GE trucks are unmistakable. The corrugated steel bodies really differentiate them from an EMD F-Unit.
I own a half-finished scratchbuilt model of a UM20. Picked it up for practically nothing at a train show. The old guy selling it unfortunately lost his fine motor skills and couldn't finish the model. One day I'll get around to finishing it...
Absolutely never heard of these units. Great video!
Never thought I'd see the day where someone would mention these rare oddities on TH-cam (I'm only familiar with them because of the U-Boat book by Greg McDonnell outlining the production history of the U-Boats). In that book, it mentions the UD18B for Mexico which came out about a year after the UM20B making it the second U-Boat as opposed to the U9B
NSWGR Australia, had six locomotives that used the same body style, powered by a 244 Alco. One is preserved. 43 class. Smaller dimensions 6 Axle trucks.
I didn't even know "GE" locomotives even existed anymore; I thought they were just branded as Wabco something or other under their present ownership, given GE's disintegration into nothing of importance.
some GEs still pretty much existed on asian countries (includes Southeast Asian parts)
I was shocked when i saw the thumbnail, i have never seen that class of locomotives ever! And tbh they don't look bad.
Likely one of GEs most gorgeous locomotives, sure wish they made more of these "Covered Wagons"
@@vaclavmacgregor2464 check NSWGR Australia 43 class, same body style without corrugations. 244 Alco prime mover, GE electrics. One is preserved in running condition 👌
I not know about GE made the Streamline unit until you, sir, make a video about it. 😂 I'm an Indonesian. I could say, GE's in Indonesia (in my opinion) is bellow EMD. There are some reason. - The long coal train in South Sumatera are designed to hauled by EMDs, particularly EMD G26MC-2U (SD38-2 equivalent) and before those EMD came, it needs 3 and sometimes 4 GEs (GE U18C with 1950hp), while the EMD only needs 2 to pull the same sake of wagons. - There is a story that a G18A1A (BB202) with 8-645E with 1010hp, rescue a GE U18C that broke down along with 7 fully loaded passenger cars (that is as far as I know about the story). The funny thing is, the BB202 that rescuing the train is hampered by engine issue, yeah, because of the lazy nature of us to buy spare parts. So, the 8-645Es could only topped at notch 4, and sometimes 5 but not in really long time. Long story short, the BB202 could carry the packed-up train with the broke down loco and arrive in the next station just in time. - Then, there's the reliability. The EMDs, especially the older 567s (8-567B in G8A1A a.k.a BB200 and 12-567B in G12A1A a.k.a BB201) and the only 8-645Es (in G18A1A a.k.a BB202), could work even the spare parts are scarce, well, when I say scarce, I mean we are lazy to find spare parts. While the GEs... The reliability is depends on the work that done and the driver that used it. And it is ludicurously smoky, like ALCo, but it didn't have the same tone that ALCo was chugging along. That is my opinion, and I genuinely thought that GE never made Streamliner other than the Erie-built for the FMs. Nice video though 👍🏽
theres other GE streamliners that uses bulldog design, such as the popular Gas Turbine Electric Locomotive (GTEL) proposed fro Union Pacific
Wonder when some enterprising modeling company (calling you, Lionel) will offer a credible model of the UM20B (heck, if they can do an Erie Triplex why not an A-B-B-A set of UM20B's!). Great video!
There must have been a brass version. . .
@@Greatdome99 You're absolutely right. Overland Brass Models makes, or made, a brass HO-scale model of the UM20B.
An interesting video! I knew of the UM20 from one of my books on the "Weary Erie." According to the author the UM20 was strictly a rolling laboratory and GE had no intention of putting it into production. The whole idea was to find out what worked, what didn't work, and once the data was in GE would jump into the diesel locomotive market. To hide it's real purpose from competitors GE described the UM20 as an "experimental export locomotive." Thanks for posting!
funny how GE is now a very big diesel manufacturer
@@ShluffyDaMonster Oh yeah, in fact they displaced EMD/GM years ago as Number One.
Great to see someone cover these GE oddities. A little fun fact about them is that somehow, one of their prime movers still survives, I believe at the Erie plant or somewhere nearby, as it's listed as a feat of Mechanical Engineering. I remember briefly covering it in a Pensyfan Periodical about a year or two ago.
I wonder what this area looked in the steam era, Probably it was an overpass for the Pennsy crossing the Erie
Fast n' furious Westwood action! Thanks!
I found this an informative video! I've heard of the _Bayonne_ _Flyer,_ but now I know how it works. Also, I like how you refer to all of the other Hudson-Bergen Light Rail lines by their color, which sounds a lot better than what they are officially called: "8th Street-Hoboken" (Blue), "Hoboken-Tonnelle" (Green), and "West Side-Tonnelle" (Yellow). Thanks for the video!

All those 10mph turns don’t help lol
Norfolk’s Tide alignment was based on an old narrow track railroad that ran from the Norfolk Terminal (now harbor park) to Virginia Beach’s oceanfront. It was a starter line that was planned to eventually run the same route but Virginia Beach voted to not extend. They also wanted to bring back a type of streetcar that’s why it also runs in mixed traffic. Norfolk used to have a large excellent streetcar network that was torn up in the 1950s, so it’s kinda light-rail and streetcar mixed into one. It is a good train and I hope it expands one day but like you pointed out, some of the stations and design were questionable. Great video, thank you.
forgot to mention one thing yes even though the Bayonne stops at Liberty State Park going Southbound to Bayonne it does NOT stop at liberty state park going northbound to Hoboken. Northbound Bayonne Flyers go express from 45th and go straight to Essex then its regular skip-stop section.
This is first clip about the Flyer that made complete sense to me, thanks for putting it out there - they've been trying to tell me about it, only you have succeeded \m/

Awesome video but rip to the people aboard this train
Hey nice video. Have you been to Rahway station? I go from there to new york penn to get to school every day.
Very well done.
The whole last two cars, middle two cars, front two cars thing gets so old. Why cant we have train length platforms at these stations? Half the time I cant tell which car I am in, they announce the wrong car numbers, or the departure vision depiction of the train set and car numbers is just plain wrong, or changes DURING your trip.
Heard PATH is closing Hoboken station for a month in the new year.
The Sandy River,&,Rangely Lakes,[2 foot Guage],also had a homebuilt doodlebug! That line was located in Maine! FYI,and several lines in England and Ireland also ran gas-mechanical,or gas-electric cars! All in all,a most interesting history!
