Dear Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Greetings! I find myself confused as to how to formally address you in this letter. I wonder if you, who despise traditional formalities, would prefer not to be addressed with conventional terms of respect like "Honorable." It occurs to me that you may prefer the word "Comrade," a term popular among communists, but I hesitate to use it for you. In Tamil, the word "comrade" carries a deep and noble meaning. My Tamil conscience doesn’t allow me to casually call someone "comrade," especially when I don't truly know if there's genuine camaraderie. That’s why I’ve chosen to start this letter by addressing you simply as "Respected." You’ve achieved a great revolution and stand tall because of it. First of all, I extend my congratulations. You have patiently and persistently broken through the long-held belief that one couldn’t ascend to the presidential throne in Sri Lanka without aligning with a specific major party. This is indeed something to be proud of. However, I won’t say that this victory was solely due to your efforts. The United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which had for many years stoked ethnic divisions and kept the Sinhalese vote within their grasp, are also to blame. They are the ones who turned Sinhalese and Tamils, who once lived as brothers, into enemies. It’s perhaps karmic that these parties, who for so long fostered hatred, have now fragmented and collapsed due to internal conflicts. I suspect you would agree that their disintegration also played a role in your victory. Nevertheless, I don’t deny that your tireless efforts were the primary reason for your success. You’ve managed to inspire patriotism, not ethnic hatred, and this triumph has restored some dignity to our fallen Sri Lanka. Like a queen bee who gathers others to build a thriving hive, you’ve united many people through your rhetoric and actions, leading to a resounding victory in the recent presidential election. Your efforts to change the perception of your party, once seen as a violent group, through your relentless travels from village to village, deserve appreciation. It seems this remarkable change occurred under your leadership, and I wholeheartedly offer my congratulations. Some of the bold decisions you’ve made since coming to power have astonished not just the Sinhalese but also Tamils, Muslims, and all communities alike. Like the new, captivating poetry Bharathi wrote, your fresh and innovative policies have turned you into a leader who has captured the hearts of people across all ethnicities. While many previously proposed solutions like borrowing from the World Bank to manage the country’s economic crisis, your alternative approach has opened the eyes of many. It seems that you’ve begun addressing the root cause of the problem, moving towards a proper solution. I’m referring to your austerity measures. Like students who voluntarily turn in stolen goods before the teacher asks, many corrupt politicians are now openly displaying the wealth they accumulated through dishonesty, anticipating the tough actions you plan to take. Everyone marveled at the sight of luxury vehicles lined up like orphans at Galle Face. The entire nation is amazed by your moral purity, which first applied discipline to yourself before advising the country. Your simple and modest inauguration ceremony, devoid of any extravagance, surprised everyone. You’ve begun teaching the people that it’s better to curb expenses and increase savings rather than borrowing and living lavishly. This is indeed a commendable effort. Our Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar wrote two couplets that are particularly relevant to your actions. One says, "Even if the outflow of water is controlled, there’s no harm as long as the inflow isn’t blocked." The other says, "A country that relies on others for its needs is no true country; only self-sufficient nations can be considered prosperous." It seems you understand the essence of these teachings, even if you haven’t read them. Your efforts to cut unnecessary expenses instead of rushing to borrow are truly commendable, especially since you started with yourself. Your actions, which transcend ethnic boundaries, have even won over the hearts of Tamil people, who have long suffered from ethnic conflict. One can’t help but wonder if Tamil people, rejecting the empty promises of their own political parties, might one day rally behind you. Unlike politicians who make false promises to gain votes and then forget them once in power, you’ve gone beyond what you promised, doing many good deeds. I find myself constantly praising you. However, there’s a lingering concern in my mind, and I’d like to express it here. It seems your bold moves since coming to power might have been a bit too hasty. In Tamil, there’s a proverb that says, “The washerman beats his drum loudly when he starts something new,” meaning that there’s often much fanfare at the beginning, but things eventually revert to the usual. Your initial speed makes me wonder if this is another case of starting off with great enthusiasm but eventually slowing down. Your actions are commendable, but I worry about their long-term effects. Are you aware that your actions are likely to create a growing list of enemies? Your determination is clear, but have you properly calculated the strength of your opposition? Thiruvalluvar also said that before starting any action, a leader must assess the strength of his forces, the opponent’s strength, and the strength of potential allies. Have you made these calculations? It’s clear that countries like India and the US, who dislike your "communist" ideology, will not welcome you with open arms. Their support may be superficial and not genuine. Will you be able to navigate this international opposition? Moreover, many of the wealthy in the country have been frightened by your rise, with some even fleeing. These are people who profited from selling the nation, and they won’t sit idly by. They will plot against you. Can you handle this? Many local politicians, who have long viewed their positions as a way to accumulate wealth, are also unhappy with your austerity measures. They may be publicly smiling, but inside they’re seething. These people are like cats that have tasted meat, and they won’t easily give up their sources of income. Will you be able to navigate this? At this point, your only strength is the people’s support. But even that is a fragile thing. Some of our people, who have long enjoyed the comfort of borrowed wealth, may not appreciate your reforms for long. Will the people support you as you push the country through these necessary but tough changes? Gandhi’s personal strength of spirit was what united the Indian people in their long struggle. Similarly, your inner strength must inspire our people to endure and embrace the truth. Only if you build such a movement will your dreams come true, and the people will protect you from your enemies. I don’t know if you have faith in God, but it’s clear that you have faith in justice. Justice is God, and I believe that divine grace will support you in your endeavors. I, too, will pray for your success. May you always find joy and never know sorrow.

It sounds like you’re highlighting a critical issue regarding justice for war crimes and the need for political empowerment for the Tamil community. Achieving trust from the international community often involves addressing past grievances and ensuring accountability. For the Tamil people, having a voice in political matters is essential for fostering economic growth and social stability. Advocating for justice and equitable representation can help build a more inclusive society. What specific aspects do you think are most important for moving forward?

Sri Lanka's politics is still very immature, like in many post colonial countries. Excluding maybe the very first few governments after independence we've had governments that have been totally fine with letting our former colonial masters, the West, essentially run our economy for us. Ranil and co.'s blind faith in the IMF is one such example- "surely if even Greece went to the IMF, then we should also go" is the implied argument by them. On the other hand we have the Rajapakses who have no idea of anything and simply want to let China run the economy instead of the West. Both sides lack the capacity and manpower to actually formulate coherent, long term policy that doesn't rely on external sources. The implied assertion here is that we as Sri Lankans simply cannot run our own country, we have to simply sell off everything we have and forever rely on a non existent service sector centered in Colombo and a bunch of FTZs in a few places around the country to survive. This is the sum total of the UNP/SJB's plan: this is why they keep harping on about Singapore. Never in any of their rhetoric is there anything about us formulating a policy on our own to guide us out of this mess. Either they are so traumatised by the last time this was done (by the incompetent Sirima and the equally incompetent LSSP), or they use it as a convenient excuse to simply stay on and rule what has become a kleptocracy. SL has a chance now to move forward with something totally different. I get the feeling very few people outside the NPP truly understand what they are. Concepts like inclusivity (true inclusivity and not as a buzzword) and figuring out root causes of social ills and fixing those instead of the bandaid approach we've known are all alien to most of us. This is mature politics that goes beyond the theatrics we've had for decades upon decades. I wish Anura and Harini and the entirety of the NPP the very best in the coming election and the next five years. Prove us all wrong and do what our "sainted" political forefathers couldn't do: run the country right.

Every single Sri lankan must be educated about their civil rights, and responsibilities, and that is the only way we can change the burden on our current legal system. Without such knowledge we have many generations of women living in the island and suffering daily in the hands of their abusive families, work places, schools, and in public. We need to broaden and create an Oprah Winfrey style show in Sri Lanka that bring the public and the government or law makers face to face, so they can listen to the stories and offer solutions and heal the traumas. These conversations are a means of creating accountability. But it is also a means to educated the general public in what is lacking. Appointing a female PM or having 50% representation of women in the parliament does not always mean the rest of the citizens will get justice in what they seek. But an educated society can prevent injustice and ensure the right public figures are appointed for the betterment of society. All the very best to the host! Thank you.
