Split damage is terrible in dark souls because of how defense works. Basically every point the enemy has in defense blocks a point of damage you do. If you don't beat the stat check you do barely anything. Split damage has to go through two stat checks with lower damage on each. Say an enemy has 200 defense in all stats and you have the choice of using a sword that does 240 physical damage, or weapon that does 190 in both holy and physical. With the pure physical sword you are doing 40 damage or so and with the split damage sword you're probably doing about 6 damage because you not beating the stat check.

The one thing I found about the weapon is that it's sort of like a drake sword for faith builds. You can get it relatively early and the split damage will far outdo most conventional weapons at the start and will carry you until you've found a suitable replacement.

I love Astora's Straight Sword. It's my go-to weapon. It especially works well when fighting skeletons because of the holy damage

I honestly came into this video at 11pm at night more expecting a damage and numbers comparison to the things like the BKS or more standard weapons rather than a brief challenge run and "general feels" kinda video. Not that I necessarily dislike the video, but ya know, its not exactly what I was expecting

It's hardly bad. Its not a late game weapon. It's an immediate access holy damage weapon. It will serve a faith build well until they get a Great Scythe and the holy Ember. It has a role and serves it well.

I remember, al ong time ago, picking up the astora straightsword because hey, holy. It stops skeletons from reviving. Then I saw the damage it did. And I felt very, very sad.

I did that on purpose and turns out; you can drop the Asylum demon in on Stray Demon creating a duo boss fight. But it is difficult because of the Asylum demon's hit box. he has to be on the right tiles on the floor when you break it or he won't fall. And if you fall without him you leave his aggro radius.

It's a great transitional weapon. Upgrade it while upgrading a faith halberd on the side for example

I do not think that Nightmare King and Soul Tyrant are that similar concerning the available agressien of the player. Soul Tyrant can be reliably hit after only two specific moves in his first and one move in his second phase (excluding the stagger). Nighmare King can be hit while doing all but two moves. You can decide if you want to wait for his easy openings or just hit him whenever he is in zipping past you. Bosses in Elden Ring are similar. If you can space correctly, you can hit the bosses between moves and are rewarded with more damage. My plan for fighting Malania was similar. I equipped two ultra greatswords and roll attacked after some moves and jump attacked into different ones to duck beneath them. If she ran away i used the ash of war of the ruined greatsword to keep up aggression and managed to stagger her twice in the first and again twice in the second phase. This obviously cannot work flawlessly, but even the hit regen is not that meaningfull, if i can regularly crit her. Waterfowl dance is definitely annoying though.

I’m not shocked a weapon that has A.S.S as an acronym, is bad. 💀

I love it because it's a great tool for faith builds to grab an early large white ember and decent enough as a faith weapon until you can find enough green titanite

With the Master key my average run start nets +5 Astoras Straight Sword in under an hour that lasts me till NG+2 when I eventually swap to Occult Winged Spear

Im on my first playthrough (Im at the final boss) and I grabbed 3 of these claws, and like their comboes..... got 1 normal, 1 fire, and left the last one cuz I realized the Iato, Uchigatana, and Balder Straight Sword are all better lol

I used this on my very first run of this game back in 2011. I eventually swapped it for the black knight sword cause i got a lucky drop...but still, i can't hate it.

If you use the Oolacile Ivory Catalyst you can buy from Dusk, you get a flat 180 Mag Adjust, making it the best one you can use under under 30 or so Int.

This inspired me to do a similar run.
