The Heat is On !!!! #hvacexplained #steamfitterslocal449 #york #ruthrauff #commercialhvac #hvaclife
I have received a phone call from my dispatcher the day before letting me know that there was a service call at an account that I have been to multiple times. The space temperature was very cold and needed heat. The outdoor temperature conditions in Pittsburgh had dropped off very cold and windy with a fresh snow. I am simply going over troubleshooting, diagnosis of a York packaged rooftop unit. This unit I had diagnosed a while ago but it was possibly forgotten about through emails. Always try to keep in contact with your customer to make them aware of equipment issues. Nothing wrong with an occasional courtesy call. If you like what you see please like comment and subscribe I appreciate everything. Have a great day thank you very much for watching HVAC explained.

@@ziggymartinez2273 I don’t see why not? As long as the persons handy, follows the install guide procedures, and it’s inspected and everything should be fine. @@HfJax hey good afternoon just getting back to your message. Yeah that was definitely a little bit of a fiasco. I was so upset that TRANE wasn’t allowing me to purchase a Capacitor, even though I have an account with them up north. It’s not like I was playing Equipment and I do understand they have an after hours fee. Just very upsetting. But yes, always be prepared. I have my own stock pile of items at my house for emergencies. Universal parts are nice but with this new equipment coming out, nobody’s going to keep an inverter board on their van or specialty sensors. I had recently changed, an Flow switch on a AquaSnap chiller from Carrier. That is a 300+ dollar sensor and I actually had to steal one from one of our facilities that the building is on occupied at the time because apparently we can’t get one of those sensors for a month which that’s insane and unexcused able from the manufacture. The one thing you don’t want to do on equipment is leave a Safety sensor jumped out. Thank you very much for the comments. I am currently living in Florida now since making this video. You're explanation of a run cap is bad. Run caps balance emf and back emf. It absorbs back emf so it's not intrduced into the circuit on the line side. It also converts ac to a type of dc current called pulsating dc since motors only run on dc. Using start caps is only necessary when you have a locked rotor.

Why not design a drain pan so that the water does not pool ?
Yeah I know it’s pretty amazing that their damn near level. Anytime I install a air handler or water source heat pump. I know they require it to be sitting level. I always slightly pitch them towards the drain because I want that water out of the drain pan ASAP. If that water is sitting there or if the unit settles away from the drain minerals and sludge will build up not to mention rot out the drain pan. But yes, sometimes Equipment is bound to fail by design. Have a great day.

Hello good evening Steve-O. It sounds like you’re on the right track getting the certifications. The more certifications you have the better chance you have getting paid top dollar by a reputable company. There’s nothing wrong with starting off at any company just to get a feel for the industry. Not sure where you’re located but if you’re able to get into a union that seems like the best route especially if you’re planning on Commercial/Industrial, HVAC. I’m not a fan of residential, heating and cooling. I prefer to stay out of other peoples homes, and the pay seems to be better in my opinion with Commercial/Industrial. Since this video, I have moved to Florida and I did get on with Local 725. But I still hold my card and keep in contact with local 449. Since you have the degree and that certification, I’m not sure how old you are, but it would not hurt to look into a local in your area and see if they’re looking for an apprentice if they’re able to get you on with one of their reputable companies. With the unions, they generally will take care of your classes/any schooling through them. But I would speak with them first if you can. Write up a good résumé. Where about are you from? Have a great night. Thank you for the compliment and it sounds like you are on the right track. Have a great night.

Hey Tony! Im a green technician whos training at the 449 Technology Center whos actually interested in working for your company! Its awesome to see a local tech who posts these awesome videos! I was wondering if you have a video on your channel of you doing a cooling maintenance on an RTU, if so could you help me find it
Hey, how’s it going? Welcome to local 449. Since this video, I have moved to Florida I am with Local 725. I still talk with a few technicians from my old shop and I do miss working with that group. I had a lot of good times and learned a lot over the years. I have quite a few different videos, but I do have one in particular that I need to edit and post when I get around to it. And it’s pretty much going over maintenance. Maintenance is a big part of your equipment running properly to get the full life out of it. Some people ask me what’s the best equipment out there but honestly, that’s a very loaded question. 1. What’s the application 2. Is it sized properly? If the units too large for cooling, you can build mold and not dehumidify properly. If it’s under sized, then it will run/run/run basically take forever to cool off. 3. Is it installed properly? With the proper clearances for adequate airflow not to mention serviceability. 4. Maintained properly. If you cover those things, majority of equipment is relatively the same. How I give out information is how I wish I was taught. The best way to learn, is honestly on the job. There’s many many very helpful technicians out there that will pull you under their wing. Soak up a little bit of knowledge from everybody. Who are you currently with at the moment? Have a great night. Thank you for commenting and contacting me.
@@hvacexplained9341 Im currently at a residential/commercial non-union company doing maintenance in a company van. I just found your channel today and I'm going to binge through them as I feel I can learn a good amount from you! Thanks for all the knowledge you share!
How do you adjust the motor sheaves to change amp draw?
Hey, good afternoon. I should really do a video on adjusting pulleys. Ok, to make it easy. Example: Blower wheel has a 7” fixed pulley and the Motor has a 4” Adjustable Sheave. On the motor Pulley if you would open up the Pulley allowing the belt to ride towards the shaft of the motor The CFM and Amps Will Drop!!! If you were to adjust the motor pulley, allowing the belt to ride further away from the motor shaft . The CFM and Amps will Increase. There is a calculation that you can do to determine CFM/amps/pulley size. I won’t be able to put it down in the notes to make sense. I would have to physically drawl it out on some construction paper. I would advise adjustment of the Pulley 1/2 a turn at a time. Hope this helps you a little bit. Have a good night. Thank you for the question.
its an adjustable pulley essentially allowing less or more slack on a belt driven motor or gear, kinda like a tensioner but adjustable
I have no experience on start ups but I did one today on training and it sounded the same at the beginning on a Lennox and then we added the refrigeration and it started to sound better it made me think the same way that it was running backwards but the guy training me said it could be the compressor idk
You should be able to tell within a few seconds if it’s going in the wrong direction. Pressures are remaining pretty equal “Not pumping” Noise : louder then normal. Amps will be dramatically less. Startups are a great way to learn. I like Lennox units I’ve worked on tons of L-Series. Have a good night. Keep up training. 🤙
How’s the magnet on this? Strong enough to retrieve some hand tools that get dropped down in the ducts?
How do you check amperage??
Use an Amp Clamp on the wires “individually” of the motor or device your checking.
@@hvacexplained9341 Ok, thanks. Sorry, I’m completely new to this stuff. My boss wanted to do a project in house, rather than contract it out. Had to replace a six wire 15 HP/200Volt motor, that was about 150lbs (old one was 200lbs). And the motor was above a ceiling grid, about 15feet to the cabinet entry. It went okay for the most part, we used a one man lift and some ingenuity. But I wanted to verify everything else the best I can. So, I have the motor leads connected to the power Leeds, running on Delta. L1 is connected to T1 and T6. L2 is connected to T2 and T4. Last, L3 is connected to T3 and T5. So, would I put the clamp meter around L1, T1, T6 or do I do each wire in the group individually? Thanks.
Should the ac bucts be taped and pookied to the plunume box
One question, why don't you use the insulation meter (megger) to check the compressor coils?
Those expensive tools, my shop has to purchase. Basically, my toe, Bucket and Standard multi meter is on me. What I’ve done for a long time. It’s basically if a compressor is sketchy reading grounded I will push the contactor in, check amps, and worst case. It will blow the fuse or trip the breaker. But yes, I agree there’s many other meters out there that are more precise.
Thanks brother 😊
It’s crazy some of the stuff we run into. I try to be careful filming some of these videos, but believe me, there’s many more things I would like to post and I’d probably end up in a lawsuit. If not the company I would work for would lose that account. Have a great day

I haven’t made any videos lately, but I got plenty of content for new videos. I just need to get around to it. I’m just busy in general with my job/having a Home/social life/family, etc.. Appreciate the compliments. Have a great day.
Should pick up a laser cleaner. Don't need a big one. Use one in Australia.
Is that for cleaning coils? I’ve never heard of that type? Majority of time we use water sometimes coil cleaner and water. I’ve gone this far is using compressed air or nitrogen.
One that I hate in those mega mall is those laters they should have small alevatar make a life easier
I don’t mind working in malls on the roof. The only part that gets frustrating is any time it comes to a major repair. It takes roughly 30 minutes to get from your work van all the way to that piece of equipment so if you got to do a leak repair with torches recovery machine, vacuum pump/Refrigerant/scale/your tool bag, etc. it’s very time consuming. I remember back in 2007 it was literally a solid month of 5°F in Pittsburgh, Pa. I had to replace six compressors at a local mall. I brought a sled to make the job easier but what a pain. Trying to recover refrigerant that cold outside does not go well. Have a great day. Thank you for the comment.
Can you please start back posting 🙏🏽you probably the best teacher on TH-cam
Hello good morning. I apologize not getting back to this yesterday. It was a busy day running around taking service calls. Comments like this put a smile on my face I really do appreciate it. I do have a lot of content that I need to edit. It’s just very time consuming. There are many smart technicians and people on TH-cam. It’s just everyone learns differently, and how I put out the information is how I wish I was taught. It’s how I learn best is knowing the full operation along with hands-on. Since this video I moved from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania down to the gulf coast of Florida so the atmosphere is 100% different. But yes, I will start posting again. I just need to do it! Thank you very much for the compliment. Hope your New Year’s as well as holidays went well for you and family? Have a great day.
Very educational.
Thank you sir. I have a lot of people ask me what’s the best type of equipment to purchase but really the bigger question is. What is the application? Is the equipment sized properly? Is the equipment installed properly? Is the equipment started up properly? And is it maintained properly? If you cover those points most of the time you have a good running piece of equipment. Imagine pulling a horse trailer with a Ford focus. Wrong Equipment for the job therefore, it will fail repeatedly. Have a great day. Thank you for the compliment.
Great chanel for the need for PPE shows professionalism 💯💯💯
Thank you very much I appreciate it. I’m really big on safety glasses and gloves. Those are the most common things I use daily. There are times we all slip up with daily but try to do our best. Have a great day. Thank you for the compliment.
Great stuff very informative and detailed.
Sure miss your videos. Hope you’re doing OK.
Great video like always keep them coming my friend. Happy New Year’s to you and your family and always stay safe.
Thank you very much, sir I appreciate it. Maintenance can go a long way. Since this video I had moved to Florida. I have a Lotta new footage that I must post. I will return to TH-cam at some point here. I’m just eating some dinner with family currently for my birthday. Have a great day. Have a safe new year.
Welcome to Florida happy birthday 🎂🎊🎉🎁🎈 . I also reside in Florida. I am in the Longwood area not too far away from Altamonte Springs and work at MCO IN THE HVAC DEPARTMENT sorry to bother you. Enjoy your dinner you and your family and always. God bless you and stay safe.
@@soloch69 not a bother. I’m right over by Fort Myers on the gulf coast side. I cannot give the company name who I work for. They do not want me to post videos with their name in the background. Why they wanna keep it so secret I don’t know. If anything, it’s free advertising for them. Have a good safe new year
New to commercial rtu service with mostly residential experience. Ran across one of these older Yorks with the pilot carry over tube not igniting. Can you comment more on the grounding issue? Had one yesterday with the ignition module, ignitor, flame sensor and pilot tube had recently been replaced by someone else. And still not working. No safety tripped. Getting voltage to GV, and gas through pilot tube, ignitor sparking but not lighting. Thanks.
Missing how to tension the belt... please
