She apparently only entered Hilton Head in the hope of playing Monica Seles to test herself and see what level she was at. But Monica was in the middle of what was then the longest absence for any world #1 (before the stabbing), and didn't play after her loss to Navratilova in Paris in February until her return in Hamburg in April. It meant that in the 12 months leading up to the stabbing, Steffi had actually won more tournaments than Monica, which is the reason why she got the #1 ranking back so quickly after Monica couldn't defend her French Open title.

I thought Steffi was a late entry it Hilton as Seles had pulled out. Steffi usually skipped this one in favour of Amelia Island the following week. I do think Steffi has started to understand what she needed to do against Seles and it would have been an interesting 93 season. She never lost to Gaby again after Amelia island 92. Good fact sharing about the amount of tournament wins from both. One always thought Seles would have had a bigger lead as held 3 out of the 4 slams.
@@ianreed1137there are some press reports online from the time that discuss it "Steffi wants a shot at Monica" and I think it's mentioned in some of the commentary on the videos of matches from Hilton Head. The green clay tournaments were interesting in the early 1990s. Steffi played both Hilton Head and Amelia Island in 1989, just Amelia Island 1990-1992 then just Hilton Head in 1993. After that she only played one more green clay tournament in her career, at the much smaller tournament in Houston in 1995. She probably decided she didn't like the green clay very much, particularly after all those matches with Gaby. As for Monica she only played the smaller Houston tournament on green clay in the early 90s. I wonder why she didn't play in Amelia Island or Hilton Head until much later.
I remember watching tjis match live on Spanish TV at night. Steffi had beaten Huber very easy in the semis and Arantxa did so with Coetzer. Anticipated final with Graf on top ❤
