Lower Back Mobilisation
In rowing, lower back pain or tightness/stiffness is a common niggle we pick up through long durations of repetitive movements in the seated position. This isn't helped by the vast majority who are seated most of the day due to work or relaxation at home after a hard day's work.
To free up the tightness and reduce the likelihood of that tightness turning into an injury, stretching and mobilization of the lower back will help loosen the soft tissue and improve your range of movement.
Complete these simple movements before and/or after your session to move more freely 👇🏼
BENT LEG KNEE ROLL
Lay face up with your knees bent and feet on the ground. Trying to keep your shoulders planted to the ground simply rock your knees from side to side keeping your feet together.
EXTENDED LEG HIP TWIST
This is a step up from the knee roll. Lay face up, lift one leg towards the ceiling and roll over to the side before coming back to neutral. Keep the lower leg on the ground and alternate side. Use your arms to stabilise and aid in keeping the shoulders in contact with the ground.
PRONE SCORPION
This time lay face down. Use the arms to stabilise, much like the hip twist above. Reach with one leg across the body aiming for the opposite hand before twisting back to the starting position, alternating sides.
FOAM ROLLING
I love using foam rollers as a quick way of releasing joints and relaxing muscles. Place the roller under your back and by using your legs, push and pull yourself up and down focusing on the tight areas. Also, move into a seated pigeon and target the upper part of your glutes. You can either roll or trigger point until you feel the release.

    Post thrombotic syndrome is a worry and affects up to 50% people in the months or years following a clot. I guess you have not had it and that being very athletic and doing intense training has prevented its development. For us mortals losing weight, exercising and wearing compression socks is recommended.

    Thanks for sharing your recovery. I feel better knowing that even young competive athletes can have this happen to them and I am not an old wash-up. I am recovering from a dvt in my left leg. Like you I felt it in my foot and calf. It felt like I had torn my calf and soleus muscles. I have been on xarelto for a little over two months. Like you I could barely stretch the soleus at first. I have been able to stretch it more and more. I just tried the wall test and I can do both legs to 20 cm. I have been walking, climbing stairs, indoor cycling and swimming. I've done air squats holding 10 lbs. My squat depth is getting better over time. The toughest part is staying positive because it takes 4 to 6 months to heal.

    Great to see a video on someone who trained post dvt! I am always seeking but never find. I had a double pe and regrew giant clots on apixiban so had to move to warfarin. I suffer long term but like yourself my stats didn’t drop so I was told chest infection. The damage was massive and still effects me daily in the leg not the lung. I always fear pushing too hard, but seeing someone like you and what you achieved give s me great encouragement! Well done sir and congratulations on your mentality.

    Did you get cardio/ breathing difficulties. Youd be asking more of your lungs and heart than average person with training you do. Deep veins being main highway for overall blood flow and muscles are crying out for oxygenated flow

    • @matthewtarrant3453

      During the Namibia camps everyday is a struggle with the volume of training you're expected to complete. For me the only warning signal was the pain in my foot, once I got the diagnosis I reduced all intensity significantly and built back up from 20min light bikes to three sessions a day over a few month. The biggest worry was working too hard and breaking clumps of the clott off prematurely.

    • @matthewtarrant3453
      @matthewtarrant3453 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely worth getting it checked out with a simple ultrasound. Back of the knee could be tendon related, calf could be a strain or shin splints, foot could be plantar fascia. Most can be cured with rest, if it was a clot and you're not taking anti-inflammatories you would have noticed some sizable swelling, warmth in the local area and reduction in range of motion by now.

    I was recently diagnosed with dvt. Went to emergency room after several days with extreme pain in my left leg. Doctor located a blood clot in my left leg. Was told that I would have to be on a blood thinner for rest of my life. I am a 6 ft 185 lb male who has played sports and worked out regularly since I was a young child. Just curious if you are still required to take a blood thinner? How has it changed your workouts?

    • @matthewtarrant3453
      @matthewtarrant3453 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was put on apixaban for 6 months but I didn't stop training/moving just lowered the intensity alot. My main form at exercise was on a static bike because my ankle flexibility got so bad I couldn't row full slide, I just needed to keep blood circulation in the area to aid the gentle break down of the clott. Second piece of kit was the ski erg but I'd sit on Box to rest the legs. 3 months after being diagnosed I was forced into racing the Olympic final trials with no medical exemption. Now, a couple years on I only think about it when on flights over 3 hours. I always get up and walk around. For the flight to Tokyo Olympics I took an Aspirin at take off and another halfway through the flight and didn't have any issues. I've never been put back on blood thinners since and even though I've retired from international competition I still train everyday with no issues. Sometimes I have Phantom pain in the area but it goes away soon enough.

    I just bought Ignite and then Polar comes out with Ignite 2. Not too many changes though, but still. I have been thinking to buy it over an year now. I like my watch, but there are few downsides. You are not getting notification, if you are in exercise mode. The clock vibrates after each kilometer, which is more annoying than helpful in long run. Heart rate works fine in training overall, but it is pretty bad at noticing sudden changes in your heart rate. This is a problem, if I want to check my current heart rate when I am not training, but not so much while I am training. I can see where were uphills just by watching the heart rate graph, so it works pretty well.

    Hi bud, new to running but i have been in the fitness industry for years. The reason why the watch thinks you go to bed at 1:30 when you been working out late, is because you need your body heat, heart rate and such to lower. And actually you havent been sleeping for "real" in a lot of the time since your body is still in "engage" state. Hope it made sense. Late workouts are really bad for your rest.

  • @richardd55

    Really good, relaxed review. I've owned the Ignite for a year and used mainly for erg, swimming and treadmill and agree with your pro's and cons. I very much like its 'wearability'. One thing worth mentioning and some people might not realise is that you can change order and number of activities that you swipe to select. This is done on the web Polar Flow page (Click your person ID and then Sport Profiles then drag them left right, delete or edit) it will kick in on the watch later when it syncs. It means you can minimise that swiping problem by placing your favourite activities sequntially! Like you I was unsure about heart rate accuracy so have just bought the (sub £50) Polar H9 Chest strap. This syncs well with the Ignite, Polar BEAT and Flow Apps and also Sync'd seemlessly with my Erg (The Ignite broadcasts on 5kHz as well as Bluetooth and ANT+). Only two days in but the two seem to report very similar measurements. I was hoping the Ignite would monitor Erg distance rowed and/or Stroke rate but I don't think it does. I am not a rower but like to try and get the technique right for fitness. Any advice on resistance settings etc for best fitness would be appreciated. This is quite a confusing area because it's easy to assume you just bang the resistance up to level 10 and do what you can.

      Yes good point and something I have definitely done since. Regarding the resistance, there is a drag setting you can select on the ergo options, this will show you a resistance number after taking a few strokes. Move the damper up and down until you're between 128-138 for a male. This will make sure you have the same resistance every session.

      @@matthewtarrant3453 just finished - epic!! Really good sweat on and great for opening the lungs after so much steady state - had a bit left in the tank in the last four minutes of the third piece, so despite maintaining the rate I put myself in the bin splits-wise. Thank you Matthew!
