The Moh's scale of hardness, a term from the past. A mirror finish on the cover looks good.
I think you would need those washers down below, probably as shims. The entire white hex plastic piece rotates under drag, so there's some rotating friction down at the base of the white hex piece, even if it's not under upward pressure from the pressure plate. I'd probably lube the Teflon washers a bit down there and see if the drag works ok. I dunno weird design
you dont grease or oil the teflon and keyed washers?
I don't grease or oil the teflon washers unless they have never been oiled or greased previously (i.e. when re-using rather than new). I lightly grease the metal washers with my fingers. A lot of people do grease both more liberally. I worry about the drag getting more "sticky" over time. I'm sure I could be convinced that more liberal lubrication might be warranted.
Found one of these in the basement of my newly purchased house. An ‘84. Seems like it’s in good shape and spins really nicely actually. I know nothing about fishing but it might make me get into it why not. Helpful video!
Thanks! They are great reels. They take a little getting used to for casting them. You have to adjust the spool release tension for whatever lure or sinker you are using. When you hit the line release lever, the spool tension should be adjusted so that when the lure / sinker hits the ground, no additional line backlashes off the spool (i.e. the spool stops moving as soon as the bait hits the ground. After you do that, you should be good to cast. There are videos on TH-cam that show how to cast these and similar baitcasters. I hope you have fun with it!
that looks like an 1983 year model it would say on it
If a year is printed on the reel, that would be the year that particular design was copyrighted and not necessarily the year that particular reel was made. So, in this case, if the reel was made through 1986, all the reels in that series would have the patent date 1983 printed on them. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!
Good job Tony!
@@alberteurs1501 Thank you 😃
Finally..i've been wondering the tx 10 with the fight'n drag made in thailand are the same . There we go. great video & thanks sir.
My pleasure!
@@tonys.5940My mistake..not the tx 10..thats the spinning, sorry, but its fx ii made in thailand. Exactly same based with the 102 plus with a minimal differences.
I wondered about that. I tried looking up the TX10 and saw it was spinning. I just looked up the FXII, that makes more sense 😊
@@tonys.5940 its my mistake sir..after i take them out and found out i was wrong..i do got both of them. Yet still finding the one on your vid.
yep Johnson and Zebco done them during 1st 3 versions/colors. been looking for one to ad to my collections which none are static displays I use all my reels even heirlooms
Very good! I like how you gave a brief description of the Spinit history. I've not been into one of these as of yet, but likely will someday. Thank you for a great video! I enjoyed it.
@@tommodesitt4699 Thank you, Tommy! Much appreciated, especially from an expert such as yourself. Merry Christmas.
@@tonys.5940 Merry Christmas my friend!
Looks like a bank fishing catfish reel to me. I use my spin casting rigs for shore fishing. No bails to damage, or risk scratching up my expensive baitcasters on rocks or whatever.
Great if you fish from a dock
Sir you have the drag washer in the wrong place man 83 who knows.
Thank you. That's quite possible. Makes sense, but the last Pocket Fisherman I did had it behind the main gear also. Maybe they were both in the wrong place.
@@tonys.5940 did you reassemble it?
@@N2RI1 I'm 99.9 % sure that I have the drag washer in the correct position as shown in the video (i.e. between the main gear and the anti-reverse gear). This is the way it has been on both Pocket Fisherman I have disassembled as well as on the Fish-N-Fold II outfit which has the same Johnson reel. At any rate, both the drag and anti-reverse work fine as it is.
I can remember when that first showed up.
“Looks like a ron popeil pocket fisherman” -my dad
Hahahaha. I've got a Popeil Pocket Fisherman, also. I love the gadget reels
Where do you get your parts
I get many of my parts (including the gear for the Penn Peerless reel) from e bay. I have also gotten parts from eReplacement parts (online). While I have gotten vintage spincast parts online, I find it easier to find parts of vintage name-brand baitcast and spinning reels parts. For spincast parts, I usually wait until I find a junker at a flea market for a buck or two to use for parts.
Would like to discuss restoration of my 60 series
My buddy just brought me one still in the package. Now should I open it?
That's a tough one. I'm assuming it's sealed in a plastic "clam pack". There are many collectors that would be mortified to see it opened. But it's yours, so you can do whatever you wish with it. One option would be to sell it to a collector via the Zebco Shop and Swap group on FB or an online auction. You'd probably get significantly more money for it than what you would likely pay for a good working example of one that is not in the package. You could use the proceeds to buy a user and keep the rest of the $. That way you'd make a collector happy and still have a nice user.
The way you put the drag back together is right I believe I think those tabs may act as a drag clicker as well That reel was definitely used in saltwater and not rinsed off properly It's a nice reel Great you are back making videos
Thank you! Did you see that Lions game last night? Wow!
@tonys.5940 yes it was amazing!
Glad you're back!
Thank you. I decided to take the summer off and just fish and work around the house. Now that this confounded daylight savings has kicked in and the weather is getting cold, I hope to be producing more videos regularly 😃
Just .my theroy about me now in my late 60's I've just gone full circle, i think my first rod and reel were a Abu Garcia and a small one tray tackle box of a few hooks, sinkers and bobbers i doubt i had any lures in the early 70's living in south Florida my brother and i bought our first spinning reels Mitchell 301's for not only the everglades but pier fishing a great reel IMO. Over the years I've accumulated to many rods ,reels, lures but maybe the last 10 years I'm back to what i started with - the spincast reel and lately vintage made in the USA spincast reels. Your recent tear down of the Great Lakes 98 reel led me to seek one out . To me the spincast reels are all unique and fun to fish with.
Really enjoyed the show! Thank you. The red and white crankbait is indeed a Classic Bomber
Good job I have several of those drills and they seem to hold up pretty good but not quite as good as the Mitchell's too many movable parts
A friend gave me an old fishing rod along with this mechanism and your video really saved me a lot of searching, thanks!
that is a cool little reel i'm a spincast reel nut and the transparent blue is interesting. i see a few online for sale although not a couple buck but i think it would be cool on a ultra lite rod with 2 or 4 pound line . sad that it's lost it's graphics as that always what interest me . i think i have a zebco bullet somewhere but think it's a parts reel .
that turned out good i have similar reels but luckily the knobs are intact but good information. these reels are mostly conversation piece not sure if i've seen anyone use one but to me the craftsmanship on them is really cool .
How do you take the reel of the rod?
I am trying to reassemble the bail on my 220N but the alignment is way off. With no tension on the spring the bail is too far forward and the line would not wind on the spool. With no tension on the spring the bail is in the open position and I have not been able to change it. Cannot figure from the video what I am doing wrong.🙁
Cool reel be a good conversation piece but of course who would want to try fishing it . i see them on ebay all the time with crazy prices . i'm a fan of spincast reels as what i started with as a kid and now a senior back to enjoying them . i'll keep looking be fun to mess with one .
found one on line great price considering someone else want $90. for one 🤔after watching you take yours apart it was somewhat a simple task as i had to take the cone and clip back off but after oiling and lubing it spins like new . the black housing is rough and will only re-coat it black . and holding it and fooling with it i'm going to put line on and take it fishing . certainly a intriguing reel .
You were close to getting it apart. The bent rod through the pinion is used to wiggle on the pinion deal. There's a nylon bearing behind the pinion holding the whole set up in. The whole set up slides out when the bearing comes loose. Then you can remove the big gear. There are washers behind the big gear to regulate the big gear pushing on the pinion.
Thank you! Much appreciated. I'll have to get back into and finish the job.
I just picked one up for a dollar with rod. went in and dripped some bar oil everything loosed up .
What rod is that you are using the reel on? What kind of rod is it considered?
The drag washer; to lubricate or not to lubricate, that is the question.
How much do these go for I found one
It depends on location, venue, and condition. In the rural Midwest at flea markets and antique malls, I have picked them up for $5. On eBay, they go for as much as $30 plus shipping.
I have a 63 , cleaned it up but still doesn't want to retrieve the line. Any ideas?
Hard to say without examining it. First, take off the cap and make sure the pick-up pin is extended when winding. It could also be that the "bumper" on the pick-up pin is worn, causing the pin to not extent outward far enough. However, I have found on mine that unless there is some tension on the line, the pick-up pin has a hard time catching the line. If I use a very lightweight lure, I find that I always have to grab the line and add tension to get it to start winding-in the line. My guess is that this is an inherent issue due to the large opening on the cap. It doesn't create an acute-enough angle on the line for the pick-up pin to catch if there is even the slightest amount of slack in the line ("normal" spincasters usually have a small hole in the cap which causes the line to bend over the spinnerhead more and thus is more likely to engage the pin(s), even when there is a little bit of slack in the line). As a result, I only use heavier lures on mine.
I rebuilt one I bought a couple of weeks ago recently. That tab you bent up looks like it’s missing a little round felt pad. It’s a dot the radius of the width of the tab and it’s about a 1/16” thick, kinda looks like distributor points. I’d bet the glue failed on yours and got spit out somewhere along the way. My reel didn’t have any of that plastic stuff around the top either. Nice reel.👍 Cool Video!!!
Thanks! As I've worked on more Shakespeare's I've encountered more of those little felt pads. I wonder if some thin gasket material or moleskin could be used as replacements.
Hi This is Benjamin Stewart Sr From Milwaukee, WI my first Zebco get when was 14th years in it very good reel I Love That Reel Thank you Zebco.
Such a great video! I too have begun collecting old reels especially the spincasts and use them exclusively now. Way more fun when you take ego out of the game. I also use vintage lures such as the Abu Hi-Fi spinners and crème worms. Such a joy to me to know that I’m not the only one who enjoys doing this.
Thank you! Likewise, I'm glad to know I am not alone in my love for vintage spincast fishing! I'll have to follow your lead and try using some vintage lures. I have some lures that I made that I'd like to catch some fish on as well.
Zebco 33 is a very good reel from Benjamin Stewart Sr From Milwaukee, WI Keep Up The good work
If all the engravings it has are : Fre-Line, the engraved white circles, and says Wright & McGill CO. ….. what year range would that be part of? It doesn’t have any city/state on it, on the bottom of the back, it has Fre-Line engraved in the metal, the model number (10-BC) is on the center of the back, and the letters are the color red…. Any ideas how old by the description I’ve given ?
The bail needs is cleaned and a drop of oil
Excellent job thank you for the wonderful tips
just got same model in a bit rougher cond. it dont have the odd bushing for pinion main shaft just a dimple in cover inside for end of shaft. mine is missing the drag adjustment screw. any idea where to find replacement as no fb groups for shakspeare. the bushing must have been a newer model feature to keep shaft from wobbling when cranked making it drag a bit so mines likely older like 1954
I recently acquired a Fre-Line Model 16. It has a brake lever on the crank that acts as a drag. Glad you made this video, so I know what to expect when I take it fishing.
So there's no drag stack on this reel???
I have a dual rivet lexan reel. What year would that be?
Getting an exact year would require more detailed information (rivet size and position, frame design, anti-reverse switch shape, etc.). But a two rivet Lexan would date between 1969 to 1974.
@@tonys.5940 lol. That's good enough honestly. Thanks
That particular reel body is made steel not lexan
I just reworked one of these. It casts fine, but the retrieving is intermittent. It will stop pulling in line then maybe resume. Then stop again. Help please.
Assuming the reel is assembled properly, it sounds like there may be too much line on the spool. If that happens, it can cause intermittent pick-up. Maybe try reducing the amount of line on the spool. Also, as you may know, spincast reels do best if there is at least a little tension on the line when retrieving line. So, if you are reeling-in slack, it's a good idea to apply some tension by gently using your thumb and forefinger to hold the line and provide just the slightest resistance. In addition to reducing line pick-up inconsistency, this also helps prevent loose line on the spool which causes tangles and "bird nests". I hope this helps. Let me know if you get it working correctly.
I have one of these same 100a reels and despite it’s excellent condition, the drag is incredibly tight even with the drag adjustment screw completely removed. I’m wondering if get the plastic drag cylinder has swelled over time? I’ve seen that happen to the center shafts on many plastic body Zebcos.
I wonder that, too. I have also experienced this with the spindle of some Zebcos (swelling). In the case of the Zebcos, I put a sanding barrel on a dremel and honed-out the spool. It was easier to get an even removal of material that way vs. trying to sand the spindle (or in your case, the drag rings). You might try honing out the center of your spool a bit with a dremel.
@@tonys.5940 I did and now it works well! I ended up using sandpaper taped to a socket and used a drill to get an even removal of material.
I'm 57 yr old and I love these old Zebco reels! These reels contributed so much to getting so many people outside and going fishing. When I was young and didn't know about baitcaster or spinning reels, I was so proud to have a new Zebco 404 and a good rod I had bought for myself from the local hardware store from money I made working on the farm, and I used it as much as I could. Striped it, cleaned and oiled it and spent good money on a roll of Stren for it because that is what Bill Dance said to use! I was a happy camper! Caught lots of fish on that rod with Mepps Comet Minos!
They truly are part of our childhood experience and nostalgia. It's why I love them so much today and still use them. If properly maintained, they'll last for more than a lifetime!
I have a late 70s metal foot green 202 where the drag lever post broke off. Would I fix that the same way? Seems like the drag works nearly identically but the drag knob is pinned in.
Yes, the repair would essentially be the same.
@@tonys.5940 the post was closer to the edge than on the 404 so I had to remove quite a bit of the screw head but I got it working! Now I’ll have to see if it’ll hold long term.
I picked up a Century 225 and got it back in shape, looks like identical internals. Nice reel, the 225 was marked USA made on the edge of the button. I rub some silicone spray (or Armorall) on the graphite and plastic parts, they look new again. My rotor was a little different, there was an opening on the rotor over the pickup pin parts, and a tiny protrusion on the pickup pin arm that you use to move the arm out of the way to tighten down the rotor nut.
