Rear Shock Absorber Replacement for 2015-2022 2nd Gen Chevrolet Colorado GMC Canyon GM Truck
Remember to like and subscribe for updates on more videos, and to help me continue making them!
In this video I show how I removed and replaced the rear shocks on my 2018 Chevy Colorado Z71 4WD with the 3.6L. Sometimes vibrations, excessive bouncing, or cupping on the tires is an indication of faulty or worn shock absorbers. I assume this method would be the same for all 2nd gen (2015-2022) Chevy Colorados, GMC Canyons, and even many rear wheel drive vehicles, assuming differing clearances and socket sizes. Verify application for your vehicle.
Hopefully you find this video helpful! Feel free to discuss what has or hasn't worked for you on similar jobs.

Why are you replacing them?
Truck is at 115,000mi. Really though my struts needed replacing due to cupping on the front tires and excessive bounce, so I figured while I was already doing the front I’d do the back. Stiffened it up a bit.
What is the control module # and how much did it cost? Thanks.
Described in the video around 7 minutes
I could really use a video of how to remove and replace the front drive shaft on this generation of Colorados...mine just broke in half?? not sure how these come apart...
@@tomwro7586 this is the video on removing the driveshaft. Unless you’re talking about the CV axle which I do not have a video for currently
Please research the "Right To Repair Act". It's very important we vote on this.
I have 5 lights out on my 2019 Colorado with fewer than 40,00 miles. The dealer quoted me $145 just for the module therefore I just decide to live with it. After seeing this video, I may consider trying this myself. My only concern is that the lights will start burning out again over the next couple of years.
Good video. Did you have to change the drain plug bolt washer to a new one? Or would you know the exact fit of the washer? Thank you
I have not yet changed the washer on it. I don’t know the part.
Thanks for this! I have 3 bulbs out on the same module so now I know I have to change the whole deal.
try resoldering the led connections.
This is possible but it takes skill or practice if you have little or no experience soldering. If you can afford a new unit it’s certainly worth the time you save…
@@TheSilver9r can I have your old one?
Thoughts of Homicide come to mind anytime I have to change parts on my cars. The Bastards make it very difficult, like having to take half the god damn engine apart to change a coil or plug
Great video. I have a question someone’s charging me $2000 to do this job plush my thermostat and thermostat temperature sensor. Doesn’t that seem like way too much money? I have a 2020 Colorado.
To a reasonable and normal person yes. But in reality that’s about the going rate. With labor rates where they’re at, I generally expect anything to easily cost around a grand or more at a shop... The days of the $100 fix are long over…
Hey I have a 2008 CTS and i’m trying to replace the ignition coils, but i have a part overtop them covering them so I can’t take them out. Is removing this simple?
I’m not sure what that part is. Look for bolts or if it’s screwed down. If nothing is fastening it in, it’s just insulation it should just come up.
@ I think it’s an air intake manifold. I’m no mechanic so i brought it into the shop… pretty embarrassing lol
I have a 2nd gen Colorado aswell, i subscribed for future maintenance that you may do on your. TIA!
Glad to have you aboard, more to come!
I have a 2015 Canyon SLT ... Question for you...I'm a bit confused by the intake and exhaust solenoid. Some sites say the parts are interchangeable, others have separate part numbers for each, indicating that they (exhaust and intake solenoids) are not interchangeable. Not to mention, that even some have different color for exhaust and intake. So does it really make a difference?
I thought this might be the cause of my heater not working. I was wrong but at least the led works now lol. That first connector is a pain in the ass if you haven’t done one before. Had to use a tiny flat head and work on it kneeling from the passenger seat.
holy shit, it would be quicker to rebuild the entire motor. Fuck these engineers.
I followed your lead. In my 2019 Canyon, there were little white safety clips holding the tabs that you push to get the harness plugs out. Had to pull them before you could push the tabs.
Another video mentioned 18 ft-lbs torque for the drain plug. Also stated the oil pan is aluminum so it's easy to strip the threads.
It is aluminum and easy to strip. Thanks for the torque.
Thanks for the tips, and now I have a tip for you! Two words my dude- fingerless gloves. ;)
So apparently there’s 4 o2 sensors ??? Is this auto part store man telling me lies?
There are 4. Two at the engine before the catalytic and two after the catalytic under the truck. The video explains this and how I replaced each one
Great pointers.....thanks for mentioning the spark plug torque specs Yowzee--- with plugs lasting over 100k miles I figure I'll use anti-seize anyway.... Does the throttle body really need to be removed?
If you can get by without removing it sure. But it’s just a few bolts and it’s out of your way…
Appreciate this video. Helpful
Pretty sure this is the crank sensor you’re changing. The cams are on top of the engine.
I can not find this part anywhere for my 2022.
might be covered under warranty. mine is.
My man, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you taking time to demonstrate replacing coils and in fact, I didn't know the spark plugs were underneath the coil LOL!!! In essence, you just showed me how to do both. Hey I am a city boy and do not know anything about cars with the exception of putting gas in it. YOu are awesome bro thank you!!
Hey I’m a city boy too - don’t have to be country to know cars! Gotta start somewhere. Glad I could help!
Be very careful working around that as the overflow half inch hose connector from the radiator is very easy to break off as you’re trying to wrestle with the covering then you’ll have to replace the entire radiator
On my 2020 Colorado I just replaced the Side 1 Bank B camshaft sensor. Getting the wire connector off was being a pain. I pulled the sensor with the wires connected. That's when I saw the red tab on the connector was tapered back. The reason I couldn't push it all the way back cause my finger kept slipping. I took a small screwdriver and pushed the small square red tab in and it released just fine. I started the truck cleared the code except for the permanent one. I shut the truck down and put my tools away. Started the truck and the Check Engine light was out. My problem was the light would go off and on while the engine ran fine. Hope this helps.
Do you have a way of removing oil pressure sensor. 2019 2.5l Colorado. WT.
I would cleansed the injection while you where there
Thanks for the video. I have this problem and you made it look easy enough to try it myself. However, I ran out of daylight/time this evening trying get the gasket out (the bank 2 P0019 side). It's baked on there. Did you run into this problem on either gasket? You just used the screwdriver to pry it off on both?
It seemed stuck in there to me too, but there was a sweet spot where I just popped the gasket out. I’d just caution care so you don’t scrape up where the gasket seats. Also I believe there’s a small ring embedded in the gasket to help it keep its shape, so it’s not super malleable like your typical gasket...
Great video. I was able to replace the climate control module on my 2018 Colorado in less than 30 minutes.
Good stuff C Chris
Nice job
In canada dealer charged me 35 fot the ac filter. A small order from rockauto gets me same filter for 6 cdn even with shipping
Thank you for video. Well done. Where did you get your torque specifications for everything? And the tightening sequence for intake manifold? Would be great if you added that info in description for others. Thanks again!
Generic internet searches coupled with the Colorado repair manual
Thanks 👍
That connector you remove at 3:53 is different on my truck, and I cant seem to get it off. Once the clip is slid out there is nothing there to squeeze because it's now buried by the clip. Fuck I hate GM! Yup, the connectors are quite different than the ones you deal with. Again, I hate GM!
Hey Chris, thanks for the video. I did my VVT exhaust solenoids today. Since I had it all apart I went ahead and did the spark plugs too.
I would double check that it is clicked in all the way before the red tab is clicked in. Also ensure that both connections are intact and don’t have cracks.
@CamaroChris I went out and looked at it again. I didn't put a screw back in on the engine cover because it was striped. With out it, it was sucking air in through the screw hole.
I had a mouse nest in my air cleaner housing. I wish to remove the box but can't. I removed the 2 10mm nuts but something else is holding the box down? Any ideas?
Thanks for the video. Great GM feeling. My Canyon has the same issue. So after this kind of stuff. Would you buy a GM EV?
I would never buy an EV… lol
Thank You for the Video, what a pain, next time will be easier. I had the error code and the A/C problem so I changed my thermostat and the sensor since it was right there. Problem solved all set. Great video, much appreciation for you!!!
Always glad to hear stories like this! Glad it helped.
So my 15 Colorado is getting squirrelly with the AC switch. It shows the light like it’s on but isn’t unless I push the button really hard. Then it’s on until I change the fan speed which might cut it off. I wanna change the module like you did. Thanks for the video. I looked at Rock auto and there are several versions of these things. How did you know which one to order? Did you have to open your truck read the back of the part and then order? Thanks dude you’re saving my bacon.
Honestly I Googled the part numbers available on RockAuto and just compared pictures to what I had in my truck. It seemed to work out…
Rockauto shows part with number you gave but your big round buttons are different than mine. I don't have auto heat on right. Just manual. I think my left button is just manual fan . Lol I better look at it tomorrow.
Yeah - it just depends on what options came with your truck. You’ll have to verify your part
Probably bezel off before to replace the ghosting, freezing display.
I have a tool for keeping computer memory when disconnecting the battery. Any reason not to use it for this repair. Is that unit even powered with key off. Although I guess there might be power in the vicinity.
I always disconnect - it should keep its memory. I just err on the side of caution as you never want to short something and blow up your computer. Will it happen? Probably not…but better safe than sorry lol

@CamaroChris I'm only at 64,000 right now. Have you replaced any ball joints yet? Dealer did mine already but I had extended warranty do didn't question them on it.
@@gadasavideos8564 my ball joints are fine and I haven’t touched them. I’m not the original owner though, so maybe the PO had done them? I don’t think so though…
That part you couldn't identify, it's the Evaporative Emission Cannister Purge Solenoid Valve
Did you end up changing out the VVT solenoid, all mine look like they need a little help I don't know if it's the seals or the vtt itself.
I do that in another video, without removing the intake. If you need it you can do it while it’s out. Not much easier
My bottom right screw/bolt was already loose exactly like yours was. Imagine that?
Well that’s odd…
