    During last winter and spring 10 meters was open real nice for me in NY. I have worked DX 10 meter repeaters on my QT 60 and from a POTA park ! The only trouble I had was looking up PL tone for radio. I did not have manual with me so I google the manual and got it on phone. Now I made copy of that chart. I just listen long enough to get the ID call and look it up like repeaterbook. I did work 10 meter AM and 10/12 meter FT8 and outher digital modes. Digi Rig works on QT60 . just get anytone cable set. trickly to set up ,but works great. just keep power down or it gets hot. I sent SSTV to England with it. Talking JS8 call to Texas 10 meters. bracing for storm ! Great 10/11/12 meter radio for the money ! I did a POTA with mine ! now the bands are poor for me in NY . but still some 10/11 meter . When I hear WWV on 25 MHZ I know 12 open ! End fed half wave leaning in a tree works great when band open. Lots of DX to England that way ! Great recieve as well. 73

    I have not had any of the KL 500 series ones yet. Had some of the KL 405 ones and the KL-703 and the KL-805. 703 has 16 fets and takes more drive and the 805 has 4-MRF 422/ 24V transistors . All work nice and need low pass filter and RM has 2 of them that work good. The KL 405 is the one I got for a friend. just 2- SD 1446 transistors and is AB bias but still needs filter . The MLA 100V has band pass filters built in and does 6 meters. That super clean . Good job showing how dirty they are. The RM Italy low pass filter cleans them up a lot. some work 12 meters witch is just below the 25 MHz to 30 MHZ ones. only the 703 and 805 are higher drive. not buy much . still no 100 watt radio drive. 73

    DX Engineering has great stuff ! . ABR industries in Texas has them as well. even coax. Them make to your needs with the ends you want. I got one with FT 240-31 Ferrite core with RG 400 coax and shrink wrap. I got with PL-259 to SO-239 . works great for POTA. I also got some from HRO . Was made from RG8X and 240-31 . was a Palomar electronics one. another great company. I got some M & P coax from Italy and super good. Them type 31 beads went on that coax as well. Just but the size you need. I used marine grade glue lined heat shrink on mine. The snap on ferrite works as well but use UV zip ties to hold them. you may need more of the snap on ones. also great in mic cords, power cords ,both AC and DC. Rotor cables. solar panels and charge controllers . type 31 ferrite beads work great. any wire can pick up RF or give RF out. I got them on my USB cables from PC to my 7300 HF radio. I had trouble with FT8 and ferrite on USB cable to radio fixed the problem . 73

      I think a lot of guys could use some ferrites on their mobile magmetic antenna setups. I get a lot of feedback from people running magnet mount antennas on vehicles that they're getting a lot of RFI in the vehicle. I always say this is due to lack of real ground from the magnetic mount and or a combination of common mode current. I myself decided to have a hole drilled in the roof of my vehicle for a permanent antenna mount. I figure if I'm going to put radio in my car, I might as well do it the most effective way.

      @@ScottsRadios The outher fix I found for MAG mount is put ground braid on radio to car body and beads on coax.

    You should try Wago lever nuts for hooking up wires temporarily. They are good for 24-12 AWG wires and are easily removed and attached. The fuse blew for a reason. I would have used a current limiting power supply and brought it up slowly until I saw something happening. Reverse polarity on semiconductors, not good.

    It’s nothing more than a glorified Lincoln 2 plus…. I have mine on eBay to sell, not really that in to just CB and 2 ham bands… especially 10 meters which is really hit or miss and don’t even talk about 12 meters, I hear people there rarely..

      Considering that you have a couple HF radios in your profile picture your explanation would be expected. You're never going to expect radios like this to compete with full-fledged HF models. If you're expecting that then you're already setting yourself up for unrealistic expectation. With this in mind many still enjoy running radios like this. It's what makes the hobby fun. If it's not fun for you then so be it, but don't think that others won't enjoy a radio like this.

    Please folks when you get your President Washington get the moodification already done. You can do the modification yourself but it is a pain in the rear! Pay the extra 10 dollars and let the conversion done by your dealer. Also order some cooling fan kit for it. It gets pretty hot if you key up for long. They have made fan connectors inside! I highly recommend the George 2 and the Washington. They are great radios. Best 73!

    Shoulda put a ground screw into each coax socket before powering it up with the radio attached. Having only the center conductor of each coax connected with no ground is a great way to make it oscillate and self-destruct. Quickly. We adopted the habit of placing a wattmeter and coax jumper between the radio and amplifier before making any tests. If the amplifier mimics a barrel connector and shows the low SWR of the dummy load, it's safe to apply power. And if there is any real mismatch with the power off, there is no justification to apply power to the amplifier until the "barrel connector" test flunk is cleared.

    • @rhyoliteaquacade
      @rhyoliteaquacade 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, when I saw all those screws were removed I expected that would happen. Having even one screw in each would have saved it from oscillation.

    Absolutely right, I would also run the device on 50 watts max. There is no big difference when it comes to radio from 50 to 100 watts from my own experience. Otherwise, the Washington 2 is a nice device but it's too expensive to get a used, older shortwave radio if you compare the price like that. Thanks for the video and 73s

    I worked at a TV shop as a kid, and what I learned besides some electronics was that I didn't want to work at a TV shop as an adult. So as an adult I went into R&D in the electronics industry working for large corporations, HP, TRW, IBM, SONY, and I had a ball, more especially, not fixing the same old junk TVs and radios over and over and listening to the customers complain about their bill, over and over. Working with the public is just not worth it. I almost never run an amp on any of the bands. I have them, but they gather dust. Trying to compensate for ignorance with power is a losing proposition. I learned early on that RF communications is almost entirely about antennas, atmospherics, and noise, so I've designed and used all sorts of antennas, and all sorts of tricks to reduce noise, from High Q loops to ultra low data rates. I spent 3 months designing my longwave vertical antenna, 2 weeks building it, and 3 days standing it up and tuning it. It was only 30' tall but had over a mile of wire and a lot of sweat equity in it, and it regularly blanketed 1/2 of the USA with just 1W input to the final amp. When I was sitting on the bank of the Mississippi river monitoring my Colorado beacon in my car I was finally convinced that power meant essentially nothing, and knowledge meant everything. I haven't turned on an RF power amp since that day. Old SSB CB's like the one you have are great for 10m. I picked up a broken one for $10 several years ago, replaced the driver and the final, tuned it up on 10, and I've had a ball with it whenever the sunspot cycle peaks. 28W PEP and a 3 element beam works the world just fine when the index is right. And I essentially never have to worry about losing a final like that amp you worked on did. Plus, if I do, they are under $10. I sometimes stumble onto the TH-cam channel of some Good Old Boy who fixes illegal amps for CBers, and they talk about 'pills' and 'Birds' and blow up $2,000 worth of FETs at a whack by sticking them in pathetic circuits with no protection, circuits that would make a 2-year tech school graduate shudder. It's pretty crazy stuff, as if they didn't know that RF electronics was actually a science, a pretty well known science at that. They seem to think it's magic. I suppose to them it is and always will be. But they're missing out on a lot of fun. I tutor kids and adults to get their licenses, tech through Extra, and it's so much fun to see their awareness and understanding grow, and see the smile on their face when they pass a test or get a circuit working. I'm pleased to see folks like you with TH-cam channels promoting amateur radio. I'm too old and lazy to do a TH-cam channel myself, so thank you.
