Trees Replaced By Concrete?
A very sad video showing what is called progress on Camiguin Island. Another beautiful tree lined shady road destroyed by concrete madness. Even DENR cannot do anything to stop it here. This is only the lower kilometer or two, many more kilometres above this are ruin forever and it just keeps getting worse.

      Could be anything. Widening the road like another commenter said, stopping landslides, maybe a retaining wall because someone wants to build a large structure further up the hill. Who knows?

    • @MayaPosch
      @MayaPosch 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@alphaxanon It generally is possible to review the construction plans at the local government, as such construction has to be filed and approved based on allowed site usage, whether it's government property, etc. Would be interesting to know what the reason behind such a concrete monstrosity is. Definitely won't help with tourism and doubt many of the locals would opt for it.

      The locals call it "Concrete Madness" . They get huge kickbacks and get rich off of road construction. So they make new roads to nowhere and widen many not needing it,,,then put in retaining walls. It has ruined this once pristine island, so many trees cut down, many century's old.

      I gave all my custom made big nets, hooks and rake to the provincial government crew of men I trained for six months, then they were told to stop cleaning the Kabooms every week. That was March 2023. Anyway it is impossible to scoop with a net now with all the natural debris. I just need better chest waders as the cheap ones available here get holes quickly and fill with water. Check this FaceBook group who cleans rivers, they have full protective gear for all working, something I wish I could afford. web.facebook.com/Cleanuptv

      Well I have been getting tired of this, but no one else is willing. Lately? more is being done with both Kaboom cleanings and even scheduled garbage pickups. I am only setting an example of what needs to be done as I can't get a meeting on Camiguin. Oh they are watching me and following some of what I do, just not directly helping me. Problem is no government employees would want to get in canals to clean, unless provided with chest waders and rubber gloves,,even then probably not. Other option is to hire help at double the local wages and provide them with the protective gear. Only the two smaller canals can be cleaned with nets. Bohol Island is better far as support goes and hope Camiguin see this.

      This and all Kabooms do their job well, if cleaned weekly. Problem comes when it's not cleaned, some trash sinks and goes under, other goes over top in very heavy rains. Crazy thing is large groups do twice a year river cleanups, but upstream where no or little water is. While all the trash eventually ends up stopped by the Kabooms which are left full and ignored.

    I hate to say it but this seems like a lost cause. The Filipinos on that particular island don't care, they just don't care. If they did they would respect the kabooms. If they did they would build a proper waste management system and all the infrastructure that goes with it. If they did they would educate their populace about why this stuff matters. But they don't. You've tried your best but they have responded with indifference or at the administrative level with annoyance cause you're making them look bad and forcing them to do actual work trying to better their area.

    • @TropicalOceanCleanup
      @TropicalOceanCleanup หลายเดือนก่อน

      It does seem that way, over three years now pushing this mission on Camiguin Island and in a few months on Bohol Island I have had more support than all my time on Camiguin. If I didn't love Camiguin so much after living here for 18 years I would just walk away. But when things like this happen I dig in even harder. Leadership is apathetic when it comes to the environment, the motto is "Progress never Stops" but only on big money projects,,,,,there is no money to be made in waste management. I have been visiting the new principals at the schools and trying to work with DepEd even more than before. Educating our future leaders may be Camiguin's only hope.

      You can blame the education system here on that, how can the children be taught when the teachers are blind to our environmental issues? I have increased my efforts with the Dept of Education and talking to the principals of many schools on Camiguin. All seem interested in adopting more education on environmental awareness. But not sure as of yet if they will be allowed to work with an outsiders help, everything needs permission from the top, no independent decision making.

      That is why no audio, I blew up when I saw what he was doing. When I calmed down I explained to him, but doubt he understands. It will take the Government to make an announcement about what the Kabooms are and why they are important. Never happen on Camiguin because they are not important to them. On Bohol? They want to make a tarpulan sign to put at each one explaining. I did that on Camiguin but they took them down.

      Yes, the Government has not cut loose the Kabooms now for months after I reported them to DENR hotline. But then they never service them either, except the one next to the governors house. Sadly to this day not one mention in over three years about what the Kabooms are and why they are important, because they are not important to the current admin here. Really not sure how the big King Kaboom has survived this long, drunks regularly walk on it to collect coconuts worth 5 peso each. Each time damaging the bottles and releasing large amounts of trash. No other NGO has this problem with their trash barriers. Camiguin might be hopeless but I still plan to build more Kabooms but only in badly needed rivers and canals around the Philippines. Jagna Bohol now has two Kabooms and I will see how they treat them. Wish I had started on Bohol, the resistance on Camigun cost me 2/3 of my support as people gave up hope. But I still have a few that have faith in me and Camiguin will become famous one day when my success goes viral. But as a environmentally backwards destructive island. It is very hard to watch as I love this island so much.

    • @hopeofdawn
      @hopeofdawn หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TropicalOceanCleanup It's just incomprehensible to me how the leadership in Camiguin sees no problem with trashy beaches and trashy island, especially when they have someone (you) willing to do the heavy lifting to get some solutions in place, and all they would have to do is maintain them. But maybe the next generation (your eco warriors) will demand better of their government, once they grow up.

    • @TropicalOceanCleanup
      @TropicalOceanCleanup หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problem lies within DENR who has no enforcement authority at all on Camiguin island. Nothing they say or do can help protect or even get the Kabooms serviced (or protect any environmental violation on the island) Oh they tried with their DENR "Adopt and Estuary" meeting and contract signing March 2023 which failed badly. We are just lucky the Kabooms can take so much abuse/neglect and still be working. I have faith help will come one day, will the Kabooms still be here when it does is the question.
