I started this channel to share my learning experiences with pottery. You see, I've always wanted to learn to use a potter's wheel, but was afraid I would suck. So I never made the time to do it.
Well, recently a friend offered to teach me. Now all my excuses were out the window. I had a teacher, use of the equipment, so I told myself it was now or never!
And guess what? I didn't suck! That's not to say that I'm great or even good yet, but my first piece on the wheel turned out to be something I actually completed and it is being used today!
Please follow if you want to see my journey, including the failures as well as the successes. You see, I consider those not-so-good pieces to be educational and useful. So I'm sharing them with you in hopes that it gives you the courage to try that thing you've always wanted to try.
Take a chance. Stretch that envelope. Expand your comfort zone. You never know, you might not suck. But if you do, it will only be for a little while.

Does It Grow On You? Glaze Combos That Aren't As Expected.
We've all had it happen. We open the kiln and see a piece that is nothing like what we envisioned. What do you do? Refire, and risk cracking, blistering, bloating and worse? Offer it for sale? Or, do you do what was recommended to me, and put it away for a while, then look at it with fresh eyes? Let me know what YOU do in the comments.

Chip and Dip Sets full version
มุมมอง 5286 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've seen many sets of chip and dip bowls. Most of them are attached to each other. While they are beautiful, and the skill to make them is appreciated, I prefer sets where the dip bowl is not attached. This is for two reasons. First, to me, it's more practical, as the bowls can be used individually. Second, for storage, they are more stackable. Anyway, I've designed a set where you can hang th...
EPIC FAIL! What NOT to do - Kiln reveal 15
มุมมอง 1.2K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is there such a thing as a curse? This load had a number of things working against it. There was the Christmas deadline. There were commissioned pieces. There was the cursed iris vase that was on its second firing after blistering badly in the first glaze fire. In spite of everything, some pieces did survive. Others are a total loss. And I'll be doing a LOT of shelf maintenance! Watch to see wh...

Wow, stunning Pat !
@@Shawnreidpottery thank you!
Pat will you please stop using glazes I don’t have??😂😂 I can give you a list of the one I have so it doesn’t cost me so much money😂😂 but for now I will do the combo power turquoise and pearl white since I do have that one😅😅
@Ellen.s.atelier I know, right? I blame all the other potters here. I started out mixing my own, but here were so many beautiful combos...
@ yeah!! I blame them too😜😜
@ I will start mixing them myself too, as soon as Christmas is over. And I have to find out what different glaze recipes I can use and change it to the Dutch ingredients. We don’t have all the same stuff here as in other countries
@@Ellen.s.atelier create an account with Glazy.org. They have calculators you can use to substitute available ingredients. I found a lot of the recipes I use on Glazy.
Beautiful, Pat!
@@AudreyLynnStudios thanks so much!
That tortoise beats the hare.
Hi Pat! Love this combo! Man the combination and the colors that appear ❤❤ love it!!
@@Ellen.s.atelier thanks! Let me know if you try it!
@ I will! Burning have to order it! You guys cost me so much money 😂😂
@@Ellen.s.atelier i know, right? 🤣😂
Thanks for sharing. BTW you look great without makeup. Please can you explain how you do the wax with Silica and what proportions etc. And how you apply it. To piece or shelf??? Thanks
You're sweet! Thanks for the compliment. I misspoke. It's wax with alumina. You just add a small spoon of it to some liquid wax. It doesn't take a whole lot. If you have a problem with plucking, it will help. But it doesn't take the place of cleaning your bottoms!
Hey Pat , new potter and subscriber ! Your glaze combos are inspiring !
@@Shawnreidpottery thanks so much! Welcome to life as a potter!
What an amazing kiln load!! Thank you so much for posting the glaze combos AND before pictures!! How awesome it is to just take a screen shot!!
Hi Michele! I'm glad you found it useful. I get frustrated sometimes seeing pieces and knowing that the order and/or application plays such a big part in how it turns out. So I try to put it all up there! 🙂
@ I get frustrated too. I’m so glad you do this.

True words in a time like this now🙏🏻👍👍👍👍
Hey Pat wow that peacock bowl is stunning!! The vase is so pretty. Your editing is amazing! Wow the autumn purple bowl is my fav! Is that Amaco celadon glacier on skull mug? Great unload xx
Awe, thanks Nat! Editing is the most tedious part, I think...worst than glazing! It was Spectrum's Glacier. Sorry, I should have included that. I'll have to keep the peacock bowl. It has a bit of orange peel texture in the bottom, so I won't sell it. But it's not bad enough to risk a refire, so...darn...I'll just have to keep it! I'll make more and use a little less glaze. I can get heavy handed with them, especially when layering! LOL Thanks for watching and commenting!
Haha shame u will have to keep it 😜
@mudmagic407 🤣
Hi tanks nice to meet you👍✌️👏🧡❤️😊❤️
Love this!! Thank you!!
@jeanmsrtin6410 thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Pat!! Your video came up in my feed so I’m checking it out..not sure why it took so long to show up..better late than never! Love that garlic keeper! Ohh you are so lucky to have the advancer shelves!! One day! You must share how you are able to have your kiln outside without any covering it up? That wavy mug is super cute! Love that glaze..but it has Aurora Green…my arch nemesis so I won’t be doing that one! Haha! As I’m typing this you asked if that was me..yes! Haha I got the tip from Shelby in AU. I’m glad it worked for you! Thanks for sharing your work and glaze combos!! 🥰
@SarahWaltonPottery thanks so much! I think sometimes TH-cam plays games with the feeds. My subscriptions don't always show up right away either. I could only afford one and a half shelves, but someday, maybe, I can get more. I keep a grill cover over the kiln to protect it from the elements. Not ideal, but it's what I've got for now. It's a manual kiln, so no circuit boards. I hear you on the Aurora Green. I'm still undecided on it. Time will tell! Thanks for watching and commenting!
love your work! I'm curious genuinely, how does the kiln do when it rains/snows on it? or do you cover it? So brave to have it outside, I would have never thought to do that and if I had I would be the biggest chicken to do it. ;)
Thank you so much! I cover the kiln with a grill cover when it's not in use. It is an old-school manual kiln, so no electronics to be corroded by the elements. I would not put a digital kiln outside, as the humidity would not be good for it. Many people keep their kilns out in a shed or similar. A lot depends on your environment. Thanks for the question, and for watching!
when i clicked this i got a andrew garfield ad
I don't control the ads that TH-cam shows. Once you get past the ad you will see the video. Or you can pay the monthly ransom for ad free TH-cam!
What a great assortment of glazes! I have and love Muddy Waters (one of my top 5 favs) I want to get leather too! Stoned Denim is gorgeous! I use Satin Patina on a speckled buff clay and it is just stunning! You are going to have such fun testing!
@divinewrath3142 thanks! I'll be firing this week so stay tuned. Thanks for the tip earlier.
Fun, Pat! Looking forward to seeing your pieces with these glazes!
@@AudreyLynnStudios thanks! Me too! I just started the bisque load, so stay tuned. I'm actually looking forward to glaze day. 🤣
Have fun
@corryg6403 thanks!
I won't even use brush-on glazes, but an unboxing video is just too much fun. As the food service people say 'enjoy'.
@pottersjournal i use dipping glazes as well, but some some of these i for just to try. Some come powdered, but small quantities this time for testing.
Hi Pat! What an amazing colors! And so many!! Can’t wait to see what you do with them! And I feel you when you say about you guys are bad for my glaze addiction 😂
@Ellen.s.atelier I know, right? 😂 Thanks for chiming in and for watching!
Thank you Pat for sharing that! I never do that but you are totally right ❤
Thanks for watching Ellen! I'm glad you found value.
I like big mugs so i can say i only had 3 cups rather than 6. Have to agree with the handle round the corners
I'm with you. I have a travel mug that holds one quart. I drink that, and a mug I made that holds about the same amount...just two cups a day! LOL. Thanks for watching Corry!
Great philosophy 'you can always put less in'. I like changing what I like.
I just like options!!! LOL. Thanks for watching Jeff, and have a great weekend!
Hello Pat, vet nice pieces. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching! ❤
Oooh I love the Texas two step glazes!!
Thank you so much! And thanks for watching and commenting!
Love the gun metal!
M Thanks, me too. That is a combo my son picked for his set of dishes (which I need to get back to!).
Very nice Glaze at @3:26! Nice colors came up!
Thanks Al! I'm happy with most of the results. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, now I can make a Wendigo skull aztec death whistle.
I'm glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching and for letting me know. ❤
Lovely unload. Loved the frosted lemon and frosted topaz mug. Such a pretty combo! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks Lisa! That's one of my faves too. I'll be playing with that some more! Thanks for watching, and great to hear from you! 💘
Hi Pat, love the oil spot effect on the Texas mug. The green of the orbe is pretty. Oooh love frosted lemon as a base. Oh good idea waxing the stilts. Love the cauldron mug Great kiln unload. Trace x
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it ❤
Hi Pat! Thank you for sharing! Love your pieces and the use of the glazes! The plate is stunning❤
Thank you so much! ❤
Hey Pat! Thanks for the shoutouts! I wasn’t really happy w my handle mug either it was a lot of work easier to just attach a handle. Love the oil spot on the Texas mug. Love the idea of frosted lemon base on that mug so pretty. Awesome unload. Nat xx
Thanks! I agree that making handles separately is much less work. Still, all three mugs did to the first person who saw them. ❤
Hi, Pat. Nice kiln opening. I really like the garlic keeper. Your mugs turned out great! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Audrey! ❤
Ooooo...that's pretty!
Thank you! It's so fun (and scary) testing new glazes! 😊
I’ve been trying to make one of these in my pottery classes, but it’s been hard to figure out just from the pictures. Watching someone else attempt it, though, has been really helpful-I actually enjoy seeing someone else struggle through the same challenges.
Thanks! You made my day knowing I helped someone else succeed!
Well, overall, I like it. If you did it over, I’d say omit the crystals, but then I don’t like crystals. But the glaze colors are great together.
Thanks SKC, I'm with you. Not a fan of the crystals unless they get drippy like on the cup. Maybe it's me. 🤣
@@patspotpage My grandma had a ceramic shop in the 1960s, when crystal glazes first came out. I remember a brown Coffee Galaxy glaze - everybody used it on everything, especially giant boomerang ashtrays. Lol! I’m so over crystals!
Oh wow they are gorgeous. Lucky you! I love Dante and have learnt so much from his tutorials. 😊
Yup, and he's a little cheeky too!
I love the crystals in the Aurora green. It’s so interesting
Thanks Tracy! I'll get used to them I guess. Still, it's not my favorite.
I honoustly love the plate!❤
Thanks Ellen! It may grow on me. ❤
Tough call. Make another. Do the same thing. If results are the same or if not refire one, then. Sorry.
There will always be more. I guess that's the point of experimenting. Not everything will be a new favorite! 😂
I think your plate looks really nice, Pat!
Thanks Audrey! That means a lot to me ❤
thank you, very informative 👍 do you think air drying clay with a layer of laquer on top would work as well?
by air dry i mean polymere clay*
Hi there! I'm not familiar with the air dry/polymer clays, so I really can't answer that question. To my knowledge, air dry clay is susceptible to moisture damage, which would make it unsuitable for a whistle. When you blow into a whistle, moisture from your breath gets into the piece, and could cause problems. I'm glad you found value in the video , though. I hope this helps!
New sub here. You have some great glaze combos! Your son’s dinner set is going to be amazing!
Thanks so much! 😊
OMGOSH! That’s so awesome of Dante!! How cool is that!!
you lucky girl!!!
Oh wow pat they r gorgeous! Lucky lady xx
Thanks! They are beautiful, and I am lucky!
Donte, Earth nation, how exciting. Haven't checked him out for a time now but for a couple years didn't miss a one of his videos. His videos to addictively fun to watch. You'll have to show us more of your collection sometime.
Yes, he's a little spicier than most pottery channels! 😂 I don't have much of a collection to show off, but working on it. Thanks!
Beautiful! So yummy 😮-Liana
Thank you! For the glaze combo check out the full video. 😊
Thank you for showing your glaze combos. I love the blues.
@fionabryant2311 Thank you so much!
My gosh that pitcher is absolutely incredible!! You make amazing pots!! I absolutely love the swirl vase with the bright colors!!! That peacock bowl is absolutely stunning!! Thank you so much for putting the combos on the screen!! The set of dishes are soo pretty. How sweeet of you to make a set for your son.
Thanks so much Michele! I stuck a string of fairy lights in that swirl vase and it kinda works! The vase is translucent, so it lights up like it's on fire. It's starting to grow on me, even though I wasn't thrilled with it at first. I guess sometimes we get an image in our mind's eye, and when things turn out different it's hard to look at them without prejudice. I really appreciate your input. Let me know how things turn out if you try any of these glaze combos!
