5 Extreme Inbound Ski Lines: La Plagne & Les Arcs
It can be a challenge to find extreme slopes and terrain inside the boundary at a ski resort. Paradiski in France, with its above the treeline terrain, offers great opportunities to explore back country features without leaving the ski area. I found 5 such lines. All of them were accessible from a ski slope and emptied back out on to a ski slope. While they were controlled for avalanches because they were inside the ski area boundary and above groomed ski slopes, it was still important to be aware of avalanche risk.
Line 1 - This line was under the Aiguille Rouge tram in Les Arcs. It was extremely steep and long, and emptied back onto the Arandelières red slope. I've never seen terrain this long and steep in bounds at a U.S. ski resort.
Line 2 - This line was accessible from the Sources red slope in La Plagne and emptied out on the Lognan red slope near Belle Plagne. It required some hiking, but nothing too strenuous. And the couloir-like feature made it totally worth it.
Line 3 - This line was at the top of the Crozats chairlift, just off the Barrières red slope in La Plagne. It was very short, but provided some fresh powder turns before rejoining the Tunnel blue slope.
Line 4 - This was a great line in La Plagne that was accessible from the Carina red slope. After about 25 turns of very steep terrain, it emptied right back out on Carina.
Line 5 - This was probably not "extreme." Accessible from the Glaciers 2 gondola, it was essentially a large, tree-less bowl with many changes in steepness, emptying back onto the Rochu black slope.

A helpful way to break down the terrain, which is spread over multiple mountains, is to divide it into six segments from left to right on the trail map as follows: 1) Montet - The highest elevation slope in this section is also the furthest left that you can go on the trail map, Aiguille Pers. Most Expensive Ski Hotel in South America? Hotel Portillo: What You Get

Hotel Portillo in Chile is probably the most expensive hotel at a ski resort in South America. In 2024, prices for a single room are as high as $1,400 USD per night! That's a big increase from 2023 prices. Portillo is small ski and snowboard resort, but it has some of the most difficult in bounds terrain that I've seen in South America, and only one hotel - Hotel Portillo. So what do you get if...
Ski Chamonix: Remote Work VLOG

My final week of working remotely in Europe to increase my ski season takes place in Chamonix, France. I've been here before and my major criticism is the layout of the mountain. It's split up, so you have to drive to different bases to enjoy all of the terrain. But I'll discuss that in a later video. Here, I'm just trying to find some fun runs because the week started out warm with slushy snow...

Seems like you didnt get much powder but the snow condition looked decent. What months would be the best to guarantee one of those big powder dumps, I will try to stay 4-6 weeks to get a storm cycle or two in.
I guess that you've concentrated on only those examples, because Argentina has more resorts than those mentioned (and I guess Chile too) , from La Hoya, to Usuhaia, or Las Leñas and Penitentes, the landscape changes quite a lot.
Always Tango!
torn my calf at mad river glen. sucks dude. I had to take a month off!!
Aint no surgery for meeee. sucked. Ive got a dent.
seriously awesome. thanks for this. sooooo good. Your the man
I live in Meribel and this is a very good take on The Three Valleys. It is amazing skiing. A couple of points: Courchevel 1850 really is only for oligarchs. An espresso €7.50 to €20.00. A plate of pasta at Cap Horn €70.00. The cheapest bottle of wine at the Tremplin €90.00. Mottaret or Meribel Centre are your best bets and there is a complete range of accommodation from 5* hotels to simple self catered accommodation. When to go. As well as avoiding Paris half term also avoid UK half term which overlaps with one of the French regions and also if you are into skiing avoid NY week. Prices for both these periods are double a mid-January week and the resorts incredibly busy. Also if you can book Sunday to Sunday, the roads from the airport are much quieter. On lift queues they might seem chaotic but they work. Yes if I was in charge at peak times I would have it done differently but with a lift capacity of 283,518 people per hour it copes. On AirBnB. It is hard to rent and the season is only 15 weeks long. If you take a booking for eight nights, the chances of filling the remaining six nights is unlikely. Thank you again for a great video.
Go to Crystal
What month of the season were you there? And what’s the best time to be there?
The Blue Terrain at Stevens is better for the progressing intermediate, but the Black Terrain at Crystal is probably the best inbounds in Washington.
Go to crystal
Whatcha doing for the audio?
The Flexenbahn down is waaaay better than the bus that it replaced :)
Local perspective here, Stevens pass is closer but the terrain can be boring (except the back country which is amazing on good powder days) especially if the back side is closed. Good mountain but tends to be boring...Crystal is a bit further but the terrain is three times as large...longer lines is an indicator of how good the mountain is. These, of course, are just my opinions...
I'd take a guide next time ! Don't assume following tracks is safe. Also with a sudden weather change, very easy to get totally lost very fast !
Who remembers Ski Acres Night Skiing? IFKYK
One of the advantages to working at Steven's Pass like I have for 14 Seasons, I don't have to stand in lift lines for ever, especially if you know where to go, you get away from the crowd and I'm not just talking about the BACKCOUNTRY.
As far as Mt Rainier is concerned, I believe that the reason why people go skiing and snowboarding at Crystal Mountain is because they want to go Skiing and Snowboarding, NOT LOOK AT SOME STUPID MOUNTAIN THAT THEY HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT ALL THEIR LIVES..
I think it depends on the person, how good of snowboarder and skier the person is.Steven's Pass is the steepest ski resort/area in the state of Washington which means the runs are Advanced to Double Black Diamond. Crystal Mountain has more terrain and ONE OF THE BEST BACKCOUNTRY IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON. AS FAR AS BACKCOUNTRY IS CONCERNED YOU ALSO HAVE ALPENTAL (Summit at SNOQUALMIE) and MT BAKER.
I would argue that crystal has a lot more advanced terrain than Stevens. If you enjoy free riding then crystal is the way to go. If you enjoy park riding then Stevens is the way to go. Crystals park has never been good.
Great Video.... everything well explained!
@@birdhousemediatv Thanks so much!
Just want you to know. I loved explanations/animation. Very informational. A lot of hard work. I see it! I also do travel channel too and I often think about outsourcing the animation/visual part because it’s so tedious. Could be tiring. Please consider that for the longevity sake. Cheers and looking forward to more of your vids!
Btw, can you do La grave in the future and let us know what you think about it. All the review I found online rave about it. And I’m curious about your opinion on it.
@@choisam20 Thanks so much! Totally agree - the animation/visual parts are so tedious. And I'm sure outsourcing would make them better than I can do, haha!
@@choisam20 Oh for sure La Grave is on my list. I just need to find a few people willing to do it. The waiver you apparently have to sign scares people off! But some day...
@@SkiBoyNY. your animation is great!
@@SkiBoyNY. yay, one day. Yes! I will look forward to that one! Take it easy.
By any chance, could you do a video touching on lift lines during the school vacation weeks in February and how they compare to the busy times in the States? I took a leaf out of your work from Europe to ski more hack last season with a wonderful two week trip to Tignes/Val d'Isere and The Three Vallies. I'm going to go over to Europe again this seaon and I am wondering how much I should care about lift lines during the France vacation weeks in February. I am also wondering about lift lines during this time in Switzerland and Austria too as I have St. Anton, Ischgl, and Zermatt on my target list.
hahaha Thanks for the shoutout ;-) Happy beginning of the season my friend ;-)
@@franceiroca Oui, bonne saison à toi, mon pote. Et le shout out était vrai!
spent ten days at zermatt a few years ago. Every run every day was untracked powder. Never skied a groomer except to get down at day's end. Stayed in a 19th century dove tail lodge with views of the Matterhorn. my son and i raced in the mtn guide fund raiser race too. Drew won and i took my age group. what a place. be sure to go if you can.
Good skiing mate, Paradiski is definitely the best France resort after les 3 Vallées. Glad you're enjoying our country 🇫🇷
How far in advance did you book the guide?
I booked the afternoon before and was lucky that Christophe was available. They were fully booked and said they would see what they could do. It took a few hours for them to confirm.
If on a budget or solo wanting social Tignes has incredible hostel with great breakfast, jacuzzi/sauna, and location, highly recommend going in December as the high elevation provides great conditions reliably.
Inca lodge mini week $600 with meals included. $150 RT shuttle from santiago. Can ski at check in day and check out day which since resort is small mini week is plenty vice full week. Better time used for valle nevado. Also great workers bar at night across the highway, much cheaper and more fun!
Thanks for adding!
Excellent video as always. Seems like if you have IKON it's not the best deal since pricing is affordable with normal rates. Also this season is probably not worth it since they still haven't replaced grand montets tram.
Yes, totally agree - lift passes in much of Europe is so much cheaper than the US that Epic or Ikon would require a lot more days on the mountain just to break even on the pass.
And thanks!
Nice video Where do you put your 360 camera ? What kind of camera did you use ?
Thanks! I used the Insta360 X3 in this video and mounted it to the invisible selfie stick, which I then mounted to my helmet from different angles. It makes it harder to ski, but I like the POV with that method.
@@SkiBoyNY.Thanks for sharing your secret
Baker is amazing, but also a ZOO now on weekends. Canadians coming down reularly now. Riding is second to none, but will be tracked out in and hour or so. Gotta get training and gear and head into the backcountry with friends. It's world class there.
A few years ago i cli bed the south face of midi with a guide, one of the highlights of my climbing career, i was 72 and we had no issues. DL
great report & amazing photography - well done !

The places you have been riding lately... unreal... That town looks like a good place to party... and what a view from the top!
I heard decades ago it was possible to ski all the way down to chamonix most of the time during the winter, but nowadays there's only a 1-week window that you can do this
@@yinze425 It definitely wasn't possible to ski all the way down when I was there last February.
When did you film this? Always nice to know if it's recent.
@@AlanHartPhD This was the end of last February, so about 9 months ago.
Did you try: (1) Face de Bellevarde; and (2) Grande Motte all the way to town (and loop a few times)? Two of my favourite runs
Yes! I hit both of those. Totally agree - great runs. There so much there to ski or board that it's tough to remember every run you do, but I definitely remember those.
It’s like you’re in Killington with all that ice! You lost all your footage?!
When was this filmed?
This was February of 2024.
Thanks for the tips. Funny to say that people are going to think you’re skiing weird because of the way you’re holding the selfie stick… Any good skier will see that the lack of POLE PLANTING is a dead give away that something weird is going on. In my first time using the selfie stick to film skiing, this is what I realized was a flaw of this method. Well, that and skiing any challenging terrain without using your poles is definitely a lot harder.
Totally, it's really a challenge - finding a way to ski with the selfie stick that hampers your ability to ski the least, and difficult terrain is the best barometer. I only ski challenging terrain with the selfie stick attached to my helmet now because not using my poles - or holding one arm still on that kind of terrain - makes it too difficult to ski, so there's no point in filming it anyway then!
@@SkiBoyNY. I’m thinking of using a mouth mount for challenging terrain… But then it’s just a regular action cam view…. Would be cool to find a way to mount it so i could get it away from my body but in a way that doesn’t impact my head, like a helmet mounted selfie stick would.
It is not easy to find out the ways for an old person like me.
Ok what’s that song you play at the end of all your videos?
It's called "We Gotta Let Go" by Tape Machines. Instrumental version.
We don’t like Americans in our European resorts…. DONT COME HERE
Wow that looks like an incredible trip and mountain! Sorry that you lost your footage, would have liked to see it.
Thanks! I guess it means I have to go back and re-shoot footage, haha!
thanks'! ski boy!, wow! great views'! ski dreamy terrain' love to go there' peace

Local epic pass holder here, I see on the list is also cons-Montana. Have you been there before? If so how would you compare it to Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis? Going out in February and would love to know that name of the airbnb. Thank you for this detailed video!!
Unfortunately, I haven't been to Cran Montana yet, so I don't know how it compares to Andermatt. But the Andermatt Airbnb was called Oberalp Apartment. Great spot!
