      @@SkiBoyNY. thanks!!!, love your videos by the way.. I let you something that I read in Valle Nevado my last day of this season 🥲….Why do we ski? Words can not explain. You have to experience hours, days, and weeks of skiing. You have to meet the people who ski. The individualist, the non-conformist, you have to see the beauty of snow-covered mountains and valleys. You have to participate in this

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've always rented a car, but the issue with that is that by law, you need to rent chains in case there's snow. Even though they say that the police check to ensure that you have chains, I've never been checked. But when it snowed, you definitely needed them. Some people were driving without them and having problems. There are a couple of places that you can rent them right when you start heading up on the road to Valle Nevado. Another downside with renting a car is that when you're up at the resort, you aren't using your car but you're paying for the rental those days. It would be an advantage to have a car when there's not enoigh snow to connect to La Parva or El Colorado on the mountain because if you want to try those resorts, you can simply drive to them in the morning and ski or board them for the day.
      Otherwise, there are shuttle services that can take you up to the resort. Even Uber is a possibility. I haven't tried that, but when searching for Uber, it looks less expensive than a car rental, but I don't know how quickly they'll come or how available they'll be the moment you want to leave. And if you're trying to catch a flight....

    Thank you so much Mr. New York. I have been looking for specifically videos on skiing in South America and to be honest yours is one of the best by far. Please keep doing this South American tips and trick skiing/ riding would be so awesome!. So on this video. Wow! You're editing and detail is really appreciative. I know how absolutely grueling it is to do a production like this and you're trying to have fun and ski .. The absolute work and dedication to this is not lost me ..,....know this! ... Yeah you captured the heart pumping steeps quite well. My heart was pumping. This is literally what I live for. I definitely am an on- piste skier .. and was laughing when you were in that trench because that looks super groomed to me cuz I'm used being in the crud of crud .. that place was so beautifully groomed.. I want in.... Anyways thank you thank you. Thank you for all your hard work. It's so appreciative.,.. side note.. One of my favorite things to ask skier people is.... Hey... Which state has the most ski resorts in the USA? And well you know the answer to that? No one's ever gotten it right... I also tell them that Wisconsin has the same amount of ski resorts as Colorado, which always was not expected actually. I think Wisconsin has technically one last after this year but whatever.

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much for the wonderful comment! I've fallen in love with skiing in South America because the scenery is so beautiful and the people I've met in Chile and Argentina, including Brazilians, have been so wonderful. And I love skiing above the tree-line, so I like skiing in South America better than much of what you can find in the U.S., where slopes are created by cutting down trees. As far as the trench at Valle Nevado, yes, it was really not off-piste even though it technically was! The snow was pretty "groomed." But it was still fun because it wasn't flat. I think you're correct about what state in the U.S. has the most ski resorts. Some states that aren't known for skiing might have numerous small resorts, so if you add them up, by number, they may have as many as Colorado. Minnesota has a bunch of small resorts too. But if you want to focus on "large" resorts, Colorado and Utah probably win. California might come in third, and Vermont might be fourth. In any event, I'm headed back to South America again in a few months, so looking forward to being back!

    Great video. In July of 2011 I went down there, but I did day ski trips from Santiago. Ski Total is the best ski bus company from metro Santiago to all the ski venues. Did Portillo (frankly underwhelming……..except Roca Jack.) That was a long day trip, but I didn’t want to spend the big bucks on the Portillo Hotel’s seven day minimum stay policy. Next did El Colorado. 90 minute drive but 52 curves going up…….pro tip, don’t sit in a seat facing backwards🤮. Last day was Valle Nevado. Ski heaven on earth. Great terrain. Mid week skiing……I owned the mountain.

      Thanks so much! The closest resorts to Portillo that I'm aware of are Valle Nevado, La Parva and El Colorado, which are about a 3-4 hour drive from Portillo. You have to head back to Santiago from Portillo and into a different canyon to go to those resorts. All of the resorts are pretty much above the treeline, so I don't think you'll find a single tree run, let alone a solid one. I believe there's also Pircas in Argentina, which is about a 40 minute drive, but I haven't been there. it's very small and requires crossing the border.

      Thanks so much! I use a 360 camera to film myself and talk about the different set ups in the first video linked below. I also used a 360 camera with an extra long extension rod to film my friend snowboarding in the second link below. You get better image quality with a traditional GoPro, similar camera or your smartphone (I'd use a gimbal with them for optimal stabilization), but it's difficult to film yourself with them. And an advantage of a 360 camera no matter who you're filming is that you don't need to worry about where you're pointing it because you choose the angle in the app after you're done filming. So that lets you focus on where you're going rather than worry about whether you have the other person in the frame. Hope you get up and running with a great camera!

      @SkiBoyNY.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It's a great summer trip! I brought my own skis, so I unfortunately didn't go to the rental spot at the resort to see what they had. The base is pretty small, so you're not going to find a selection of 4-5 places at the base like you might in the U.S. or Canada. Maybe their website can give you a sense? If you decide to rent, you can also consider shops in Santiago right before you hit the road up to the mountain. They might have better selection. Easier to hit those if you have your own ride up, though.

      @@SkiBoyNY. I am really excited about this foray to the great ski unknown termed Valle Nevado. With regards to the equipment, I had planned to bring my skis/boots but my wife (who is a good skier) did not want to "shlep" skis to Chile - she'll bring her boots. I've done some reading but there is lttle descriptive detail on the type of demo skis available. The VN website has meager information and the rental/repair shop phone goes unanswered. As we will be renting a SUV, I will take your advice and check out the ski shops (e.g. Escape) in Santiago on our way out of town. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeromeLasker I think that's the safer bet - finding equipment in Santiago. If you get up to Valle Nevado and don't like the options, it's a long way back. There's always El Colorado and La Parva, which are closer, but they may be limited too. Just make sure you don't get caught by the one-way weekend traffic restrictions! You can generally go up to Valle Nevado before 3 pm or after 8 pm. Uphill only 8 am to 2 pm and downhill only 3 pm to 8 pm on weekends and holidays.

    A nice review of a pleasant looking mountain. The reason So. Am. skiing doesn't get much love is that even though there are some outstanding areas, is it's not really enough to draw other than the uber-uber-uber hard core skiers. After a season in in the No. Hem. people are really ready for spring and summer. In addition, So. Am. isn't know for big pow, not saying there isn't some, but it's no Snowbird or Alta which would be needed as a big draw in summer. Also, they're competing against the English speaking areas in Australia and New Zealand which may offer better package deals.(and a side trip to Bali/Morena)

      Thanks! Totally agree a "follow camera" looks the best. The closest I've come to that shot with the 360 is having it attached to and extended from the back of my helmet. Makes the helmet very back heavy, so I'm working on a backpack solution... But that angle is definitely the best IMO too.

Everyone, from gas station attendants, tire chains vendors and lift operators, were extremely friendly and patient in working with my inability to speak Spanish. At the resort itself, many employees did not speak English, but you can get by. The hotels might have English speaking employees, but I stayed at an apartment rental. The only real difficulty I had was at La Parva when I needed to find a lift ticket office that was open. I ended up using Google translate. So overall, totally doable if you only need to engage in basic interactions.

Restaurant cost seemed normal. * 1 who is totally new
    * 2 beginners who can do greens
    * 1 intermediate who likes blues or under, and another intermediate who likes blues/blacks.
    Do you think Valle Nevado is good for beginners? We’re trying to decide between Valle Nevado and Coronet Peak in New Zealand. We’re on the Ikon Pass.

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Valle Nevado is ideal for intermediates. There are a fair amount of advanced slopes but few for a complete beginner. I think Coronet Peak may be slightly better for the beginner in your group, and The Remarkables, which is also on Ikon, might be even better than Coronet Peak. From what I hear, El Colorado, which is connected to Valle Nevado, is ideal for beginners. But not for everyone else in your group. It's not on Ikon anyway, and I don't think a beginner can get there easily if staying at Valle Nevado. Hope you have a great time!

      @lyuluciano3596 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you take Chile as a whole, I think corralco is the best for any beginner, intermediate skier. But it's 730 kilometers from Santiago. And there is only one hotel in the ski resort, which is super expensive, but there is a small town of Malalcahuello 8-10 kilometers outside the ski resort. It is a very good choice to rent residential houses there. There are also some restaurants and hot springs, but it is best to drive to ski by yourself , otherwise it will be inconvenient to travel.

    • @lyuluciano3596

      Generally speaking, nevados de chillan is the best ski resort in Chile in terms of area and terrain. There are many apartments in the ski resort that can really slide in and out. There is also a small town 7-8 kilometers outside the ski resort where you can live. The distance from Santiago is about 480 kilometers by car.

    Great video!
    - did you fly with your own ski gear or rent?
    - is there decent public transportation from Santiago to the resort or did you rent a car?
    - is is ski only or snowboarding allowed?

      There are a lot of companies that provide transportation from the airport directly to Valle Nevado and other ski resorts, but you can also get a taxi.
      If you are staying in one of the hotels in valle nevado, they can also provide you a transfer from the airport to the resort.
      And yes you can snowboard as well

      Thanks! I brought my own gear, but there are rental shops in Santiago and you can rent at the resort, though you will have better selection in Santiago. I rented a car, but you can certainly find transfers up to the resort. Even Uber appears to be an option, though I did not try it from Santiago to Valle Nevado. Yes, boarders are welcome too!

      Thanks! I'm so far behind - have like 15 vids in the pipeline. Just never have the time to do them. But good timing on this one since the South American winter will start in a month or two!

      @@SkiBoyNY. we started doing shorts this season… the good news is we provide content a lot faster and alot more… it also helped us grow a good amount over the 3 platforms… the bad news is I have 3 trips that didn’t get a long edit yet and it’s almost June 😂
      I’ll prob edit them in the summer and drop them in Oct when everyone is getting stoked to ride again

    I'm nervous to do on mountain interviews of myself. Do use a microphone of some type?

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I use a Sarmonic wireless microphone. The mic clips to your clothes and you can place the receiver in your pocket. It works out well! Otherwise, there's way too much wind.

    In what date was this? Is there snow already in chile?

      @SkiBoyNY.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was August 2022. Didn't get around to making the video until now - but there were flurries today at Cardona in NZ, so hopefully other southern hemisphere countries like Chile will get snow soon!

    NOT BAD, PERO LAS MEJORES CANCHAS ESTAN EN LA PARTE ALTA HACIA TRES PUNTAS, PERO SON DE ANDARIVELES DE ARRASTRE Y CUANDO LLEJAS ARRIBA NO TIENEN PENDIENTE Y SI ANDAS EN SNOWBOARD ES MUY CANSADOR ESTAR SACANDOSE Y PONIENDOSE LAS FIJACIONES

    What’s the ratio of like groomers, bumps, and extremes here?

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all above the tree line, so no significant bumps when I was there. They kept all the trails pretty well groomed, averaging every other day max for each run to be re-groomed, including black slopes. But there's a lot of terrain just off the slopes - not sure most of it's "extreme," but certainly pretty fun bc it's wide open. You may be able to find extreme stuff if you have skins like just off the Ankla T-bar.

      It's mostly groomers. I was also skiing in September (their spring) so maybe it's different.
      Go for the views, culture, and the ski in ski out and a few days in Santiago. It's not going to be a Snowbird or Jackson Hole.

      @SkiBoyNY.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! I was there during peak season, and if you were skiing or boarding on a weekday, it was pretty easy to be alone on the slope. On a weekend, the crowds picked up, but it still wasn't at crowded North American or European levels.
