PPF Training: Installing Paint Protection Film on a Chevy Silverado ZR2 Hood (With Big Mistakes!)
In this PPF training tutorial, I’ll guide you through the process of installing paint protection film on the hood of a Chevy Silverado ZR2. This video isn’t just about perfect techniques-it’s about learning from mistakes. During this installation, I accidentally used distilled water in my slip solution instead of purified water, which caused several issues like excess soap, poor adhesion, and “chicken skin” marks in the adhesive. I’ll show you how I corrected these problems and successfully completed the installation.
🔍 What You'll Learn:
The Importance of Slip Solution Ratios: How using the wrong water type in your slip solution can impact your installation.
Correcting Installation Mistakes: Techniques to fix chicken skin marks and poor adhesion without damaging the film.
Step-by-Step Hood Installation: Learn how to tack, stretch, squeegee, and wrap PPF on a hood, even when challenges arise.
Trimming and Wrapping Edges: Tips for clean trims and wrapping edges for a seamless, professional finish.

What kind of PPF you are using ?
I'm pretty sure this is CovrGard. 👍🏻
Brent - Great vid! Always learning through your vids. Good catch on the distilled water and a great point for me to remember as I use mostly distilled water. Quick question and haven't seen you address this before...vehicle decals. How do you deal with or approach vehicle decals when PPFing? Do you just PPF over factory or aftermarket decals or is it best to remove decals when possible? I honestly don't know since any break is the painted surface is typically magnified by PPF. Many thanks.
Very true. I normally let the customer decide how we're going to deal with the stripes. For me, it's either cut around them or remove them and then reinstall after PPF. Like you said, the silver line around the stripes looks terrible if you cover them. 👍🏻 Here is a video where I install over the stripes on a bumper and then cut around them. th-cam.com/video/KEPUpcol_yA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=99rLVt5a9JeDGHz5 And then here is a video on a hood where I install around the stripes. th-cam.com/video/oQUGtCo9xKk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2FZgq4a5XaMAnrcs
A very annoying occupation, LOL.
It sure can be! Very tedious work! 😁👍🏻
Great job mate, usualy bulk and do the small parts all manualy, in argentina there arent many shops that have precut and the car models are diferent many times, so its good to see and help one improvise or get new tips that i can add.
I do have quite a few videos where I bulk parts or full bumpers. There is always something to learn! I love learning new tips, tricks, or finding new tools. 👍🏻
What do you get for a model 3?
Roughly $650 for the rear window in one piece and all of the side windows.
As an installer this video made me feel not so alone when problems happen! Thanks for keeping it real!
Yup! I guess we all have these kinds of days. 😢 I'm pretty sure I doubled the installation time on this hood! 🤣😂
Hey Greg, great video. Really enjoyed watching you overcome that obstacle. Was wondering if you had any tips on how to avoid walking/shifting of film on plotter. I sometimes get shifting of a 1/4 each or more. Thanks for another video and Happy New Year.
Thank you for the feedback. What brand plotter do you have? Make sure you are using all available pinch rollers when cutting PPF. Also, sometimes, when the blade gets too dull, it will add a lot of drag and can cause the ppf to track off.
@ graphtec ce7000
Thanks for that advice. I will be looking into getting a new blade.
Ty, I’ve watched so many tinting videos and this is truly the best one for beginners
Awesome to hear!! That was my goal. Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. The feedback is helpful. Are you learning on your own or do you have another person teaching you?
Nice job
Thank you. It was a bit messy, but we got it done. 😁
Nice. What is with the black glove? What kind of glove?
It's a vinyl wrap glove. It allows your fingers to slide nicely across the PPF while heat sealing the edges.
40:57 usually we use tack solution for this situation. 1 guy spraying still while another guy squegee down. always work here
Normally, this wouldn't be a problem for me, but my slip solution was way off because of the distilled water. 🤦🏻♂️ Bad times! 😂
Great work man! I always have issues, especially on white trucks, with the top bed rail sucking contaminants back out once I squeegee it sometimes it doesn’t fully tack and water pulls back out with dirt in it no matter how crazy I prep it and blow it out with air and brush I seem to still get a little dirt in it. Im curious what you’re using to get the film to stick right away like that? Depending on what film I’m using I’ll use an alcohol mixture or just hot water. Are you using some type of adhesive promoter up under the plastic or what’s the best way to go about that? Thanks
Just my tack solution. Plus, my slip solution is pretty tacky. There's not much soap in it. I do not use any type of adhisive promoters or primers. I really went at those rails with the pressure washer. 👍🏻
great video! what cause the chicken skin?
There is too much soap in my slip solution. The distilled water needs much less soap than when using just filtered water from our reverse osmosis system.
Chicken skin caused by bird flu
What (who) had the bird flu, though? Me, the hood, or the PPF? 🤔
@EncorePPFtint not sure what came first, the flu or the egg
Don’t be hard on yourself, some installs don’t go as anticipated. I had your same exact issues on a Raptor R hood I was doing with those concave areas not wanting to stick. For a second I thought I was watching myself 😂
Yep it's bird flu for sure
🤣😂 It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one! Even after all of these years, I still have to go through this from time to time. 🤦🏻♂️ the raptor has some good ones as well. I just uploaded a video that will post in a couple of weeks on a 2025 Lexus GX550 hood. It has a huge recesse in the middle of the hood. Interesting install. 👍🏻
I’ve tried shrinking chameleon tint on my front windshield twice now with no luck. Could it be that I’m putting the film on sideways. The height of the film was enough for the width of the windshield so I rolled the film out from the top to the bottom of the windshield. Is that why it just seems impossible to shrink?
Also I’ve never used a dry cloth is it supposed to smell like detergent and be kind of waxy?
Yes. It's an antistatic dryer sheet. It keep the tint floating on the window and not sticking to the glass.
That could be. you can only shrink the top and bottom of the roll (the factory edges). Window film can not shrink on the sides of the roll. you should be rolling the film out on the windshield from left to right. Then you will be able to shrink the top and bottom of the roll. If you try to heat shrink the on the sides of the roll you will destroy the film. 👍
Wow!!!❤❤❤
😀
The problem is if you use a carwash machine.
Do you mean a going through a drive through car wash? Or are you talking about using a pressure washer?
@@EncorePPFtint Mobile carwash. They destroy it
Yeah it's kind of tough for me cause I'm learning ppf AND tint at the same time for Toyota dealership. Been a hell of a ride. I've broke down a few times, I've been the most satisfied I've been before tho also at times, and felt better than any other dead end job. Plus you can start your own business with it and it's fairly easy to run by yourself. Worth the struggle. I'm so scared of wasting too much film tho so it's tough to learn when you can't make the mistakes and constantly worried about going through too much film. Any advice for me Brad? I've had three weeks total of training. And they kind of just left me to my shop, and send me a Toyota every few days when I'm done tinting and PPFing it. Not sure if three weeks is quite enough for ONE trade let alone a second one. My main instructor said his instructor was with him for a YEAR straight before leaving him to his own. I'm MANAGING to install things fairly well, but lots of dirt in here. We have a HUGE heater that runs off of the used motor oil from the company. Genius idea, but I believe it's creating flying particals of dirt and ending up in my tint and ppf jobs. I'm keeping my mobile glass peel board like two feet from the install, spraying MYSELF with mist, all my cloths, even spraying the AIR before even touching the peel board. I'm wiping my top edges, I'm even cleaning the areas AROUND the top edge the entire door basically. Even deep in the cravaces and cracks. Still get dirt. It's insane. The only good thing is after we all figure out this entire process, I'm gonna be REALLY good at keeping my installs clean. At this point I know for a FACT it isn't a ME thing. I've considered that the entire time and am bad at blaming MYSELF for things, when they're our of my control in reality. So I had to make the hard decision and conclude that this isn't me this time. I need something to keep the dirt way down in here.
Keep at it. You'll get there. Focus on cleaning the windows really well and getting the cleanest install you can get. Speed will come with time. Try turning off the heater and see if you still have a problem with dirt in your installs. Does the heater keep the air swirling around? damaging material while learning is just a part of the process. I still do it. It's a lot more rare now but it still happens. It's just a part of the job. I started tinting windows after 2-3 days of tinting with another installer. Then it was back to my uncles shop to work on my own. It's rough starting that way. There is a ton of trial and error. Have you watched this video I made about getting cleaner installs? th-cam.com/video/dFqC7tKFa3U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2BW49DHbYr8HApbq
Great real life situations glad u showed the mistakes too
We've got to keep it real and it's the only way to learn how to work around or fix problems. :)
@EncorePPFtint yes I been tinter since 1995. I'm 47 years old...seen it all newer cars are way easier than rubber sealed old jeeps and cars....i don't even strip old tint no more just on trucks stripping tint off cars suck on rear windows....
Hated the old crvs the new ones are so nice now...
You are right. it's a night and day difference! Those old ones really sucked, big time! So much stuff to take off the glass and then reinstall and reapply the double sticky tape to. Plus, the damn struts out in the glass that you had to cut around at the end so the film wouldn't twist. I just installed tint on an older Wrangler and had to cut around the strut mounts. Fun stuff.
@EncorePPFtint gross hate those ones
How much is the monthly cost?
You'd have to reach out to CORE in order to get pricing. Or email me at TH-cam@encorewindowtinting.com
Why are they seats and panels not covered during the process?
There are a lot of years of experience that go into deciding whether or not certain things need to be covered in a specific vehicle. I'm not sure exactly what on this vehicle you are referring to. Covering some things actually gives you a higher probability of damaginging things with water. Or it can make the installation more difficult and that causes more imperfections in the finished product. 👍🏻😁
Only tap water will do?
Here is a video that goes over the solutions I use and how to make them. th-cam.com/video/xGjn2rwh-W4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kPOM_swiL_xxK-Yj
Waste of money.......LOL
To each their own.
Have a couple of tens of projects till now.. many, thanks to you. I'm still learning 😊 Have a wonderful Christmas 🎉
Keep it up! Merry Christmas to you.
Ive been tinting for 30 years Im thinking of adding PPF to my services. Do you warn the customer of potential distortion and imperfections prior to the installation or just deal with the picky ones that come back with issues?
It's paint protection, not paint perfection. You definitely want to manage expectations before you start the job. I've been doing this so long that my work almost always meets and surpasses my customers' expectations. I tell my customers that we aren't going for perfect, we're going for damn good. From time to time I have to redo a piece or two for a picky customer. Most of the time, I knew the problem was there but was hoping it was pass. I'm sure by now you know how to read customers pretty well. I make sure and do a bit of extra explaining to customers that I feel need it. I like to under promise and over deliver.
Is it necessary to use heatgun in ths process?
A heat gun only gets used during the last process of the installation. The heat sealing process, where all of the edges of the PPF get sealed down. 👍
Awesome tip
Glad this helped! 😁

Awesome! I always love hearing stuff like this. 👍🏻
I’ve been laying film for 6 months now I went from a detailer to a tech where I work. Let me tell you those bulking rear bumpers terrify me. Your video has literally helped me know how and when to take the steps that I had all scrambled up! Very grateful for you man!!!
That is awesome to hear! This is the whole reason I started this channel. I think that as you (or anyone) gains more experience with PPF that you'll be able to pick up on more things in the videos. More advanced techniques and tips that you can't understand until you are a bit further along (like you are at 6 mobths). There is always room to grow and learn new things. I still watch others work and learn new techniques, tips, and tricks. One more thing. Great job taking the initiative and searching out ways to learn more and grow yourself as an installer! You've got this! 👍🏻
Try the wire trick on quarters its a game changer
What is this wire trick you speak of?! I'm always down to learn a new trick. Do you have a video link, or can I just search up "wire trick wing window"?
Dont weed the film shrink bottom first then peel the extra film by the cut....
I've tried that before but it adds an extra step to my process because I have to flip the film back over after the shrink. It is a good tip though. Thank you!
Good channel and quality and explanation.....
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Good videos friend...
Thank you!!
If you are having issues with the walls staining just take some ppf and apply it on the walls down to the rubber trim at the floor and also a gutter along the bottom of the glass helps a ton to keep it from running down as well. Just a little something I have on my painted walls and peel board setup because of the same issues. I bought some cheap ppf and it works great for what it is intended for. We are too old to be cleaning walls when everything else is cleaned haha!
Thank you for the tips. I bet that helps quite a bit and is pretty easy to wipe down.
What is your favorite soap for tinting with autobahn..??
I use seventh generation dish soap. I add 30ml per gallon but my other two installers prefer 40ml per gallon. I think 40ml is too soapy.
@EncorePPFtint thanks about a ounce per gallon...?
Yes. I run at one ounce, and my other installer runs at 1.5 ounces. 👍🏻
I appreciate the assistant mopping in the background. All very revealing to the environment needs to do this work.
You'll definitely want to make sure your environment is as clean as possible. Also, good prep work on getting the motorcycle as clean as possible will help keep contamination out from under the PPF. I have a video that goes over how to properly pressure wash before an install.
Yes. This huge video with the marked chapters is VERY helpful. I'm studying up before I wrap my motorcycle.
What kind of motorcycle do you have? Motorcycle parts can be tough because they have a lot of bends, curves, and contours in a small package. 👍🏻😁

I should've had you do mines. The guy that did mines had those wrinkles that you just got out on the edge of hood. I also have uneven cut ppf near the edges. I will wrap my next vehicle im getting in 2025. And i will make sure it is from someone with Amazing reviews. I have that Carbon Fiber in Stek Dyno. Still looks good but so many imperfections
Sorry to hear that their install didn't turn out as good as this one. It sounds like you have a good plan for you next vehicle though. It's also great to see if you can see their work beforehand. Maybe on a vehicle they are currently working on. 👍
@EncorePPFtint thanks
Looking forward to the release of a Lexus LX600 front hood tutorial😊
I don't have a LX600 hood yet but I did just record a GX550 hood. Any interest in that one?
@ Yes! that’s good!
What kind of paper are you using?
It's called transfer tape. You can find it almost anywhere you can buy vinyl.
Please PLEASE do a 2024 prius!!! Having a couple issues with back window and I think it's how I'm grabbing it and how I'm putting it IN the hatchback while it's up. I know there is a certain trick to doing it correctly, but that area of training escapes me.
Full car always helps
👍🏻😁
Have you ever done a color PPF full body? You think a hybrid plotter cut or bulk would be the good choice for color PPF 😅
I have never done a full body color change. Although I have done full body matte conversations. I think hybrid kits help save a lot of material vs. bulking. Both are great ways to get the job done.
Definitely hybrid. Saves so much time compared to bulking and saves material too.
@@xolus1786 agreed!
Thanks for sharing ❤
Of course! 😁
That tail gate wing looks way better than that plastic one they use. Why do they do that anyways? If you're poorer you pay a pretty large amount for just the lower end base model, it still runs around $55,000, so why do they make the CHEAPER ones plastic? Just to say "oh you're too POOR to handle the PAINTED tail gate wing....you get the plastic piece of trash"? I mean it's about the only reason I could think of to have TWO SEPERATE manufacturing tools or machines and SPACE to make TWO DIFFERENT ones, and call that economical.
Do you use white scrub pads to clean glass?
Yes. Every new car wi down gets scrubbed with a white scrub pad. Also, every rear window gets the same scrub. 👍🏻
@@EncorePPFtint Yes, thank you. have a nice day
Thank you for this video I tackled one today in black and 1st time go you made it easy for me!!! I’ll drink a beer for you right now!!!
Thank you for letting me know! Black is tough. It's awesome that the video came in handy. Enjoy that beer! Well deserved. :)
