It's poignant & mournful--in line with his struggle, and his roots as a revolutionary against tyranny...but also carries a militaristic, authoritarian feel, with the snare drums. A tragic contradiction of the oppressed becoming the oppressor.

”First Prime, then Ultra Magnus, and now you!" What really stuck with me was Lenord Nimoy's delivery with that line. Like Galvatron sounded really pissed off with pretty much Unicron, the whole situation, and himself and unleash all of that anger on Hot Rod.

Whats interesting is that most of the autobots that died in the movie had their names given to different characters in the series that came after, rid prowl, armada wheeljack etc.

This and rest of the score is just a perfect masterpiece and an absolute time capsule. Just so crazy how much all came together to comprise the 86 movie into the cult classic we know and love.

I like the way the Decepticon motif is small and sneaky for Laserbeak, then larger and more ominous for Megatron.

Some things to note about Starscream's ceremony: He keeps the (non-animation-error) Seekers around him as a precaution in case his fellows attempt to usurp him. He has Astrotrain (who he likely broke a deal with for basically creating a pretext to usurp Megatron's position) crown him as a way of "rewarding" his loyalty (and also basically setting Astrotrain to have probably been _his_ own Starscream, given his repeated treachery). Only 5 of the Constructicons are allowed in the ceremony in case they get cheeky and go full Devastator (and considering they likely were trolling him with the trumpets interrupting his coronation, it was a well-warranted concern of his). ...barring Soundwave's presence, Starscream had his bases covered to ensure he'd rightfully ascend without so much as a scuffle. Pity he did *not* anticipate Galvatron.

It's impressive how some of the most striking and terrifying lines in the whole movie were made by a literal dying titan in the field of film. One who took the role seriously while thinking it beneath him, creating one of the most _eldritch_ portrayals of evil incarnate. ...I feel later voice directions for Unicron lack that particular grandiosely apathetic gravitas. It's a delicately balancing act between being arrogantly above all while also being _absolutely unimpressed with even the mightiest mortal._

in my head, i lump this record in with the progressive metal scene emerging at the time. this sounds really close to the stuff Dream Theater and Fates Warning were doing 5 years later in the early 90s. The ELP influence on this soundtrack definitely helps.
