Disassembly & Install of John Deere MCS Hydraulic Dump Cart and Rear PTO
Okay, this wasn't the most concise disassembly and installation video I have ever done. We took the MCS Hydro dump cart and rear pto off the 420 and put it on the 322. It was a bigger ordeal than I thought it would be and I'll still working on it.

Under the Sheetmetal of 1980's John Deere Garden Tractors 322 vs. 420

It's not often I have two of the best stripped down ready for a side-by-side comparison video, but this opportunity was there, so I figured I would show why people might desire or seek out an older heavy duty garden tractor versus a newer lighter duty one or paying the huge sum of money for a new heavy-duty tractor. Not really a comparison, really just a showcase of what these tractors represen...

Lots of people ask how big an attachment they can fit on these tractors. I think that defeats the purpose of having a little tractor. These are the jobs they accel in, no bigger tractors could have pulled this job off and the 1 series is far better than a garden tractor with a loader, as the ergonomics of the 1 series is superior to garden tractors for "real tractor" work.

It's funny there are so many oil filter wrenches. All my filters are on really tight. I have never taken one off that either didn't need a wrench or needed both hands and slowly grunting it off little by little. What I saying is, if it didn't look like I had it tight, it still probably was. I'm deathly worried about some dumb avoidable catastrophe like not tightening the oil plug of filter, so most of my friends make fun of how tight I make things. In fact, I just recently started paying attention to torque settings (non-engine ones, I always paid attention to those during engine building) and I have been surprised how " loose' many torque settings are, it's scary. Thanks for watching.

I have 3 diesels here in the Midwest and the 332, X595 and 750 all start pretty easy in the winter in a non heated garage with treated fuel. My town is 4200 population and I have 6 different stations that carry diesel; I am along I55 though. I’m obviously a diesel guy because of the longevity and the resale value, which is why I don’t think people should shy away from a diesel garden tractor. Its good to note that there are three iterations of the rear PTO for these, all of which share the same clutch. The final drive is what differentiates them. The dual pulley was utilized for the hydraulic tiller on all 420/430 models and could be used on a 318/322/332 if so optioned as most of these were powered with an undermount pump driven via mule drive. The single pulley was used for MCS systems including the tilt dump and hydraulic lift dump and the 2000 RPM gearbox was used mostly for the 48" Mech. Tiller, rear finish mower (50"/60") and other 2000 RPM driven attachments. Also, some MCS had drive systems that were operated off of 2000 RPM gearboxes but seem to be more the exception.

I called the dealer a few weeks later and they said they would get back to back to me shortly, but the return call never came! Went back to the dealer three weeks ago to inquire about it again and was told they were still having difficulty getting the parts. My 1025r is a 2018 model year, is used a lot and my property is not flat and I use the break frequently. My bell crank appears to be ok with no stress cracks, but??? This is being handled poorly by Deere and the big dealership I have to go through.

Yeah, I am with you, handled very poorly for such a profitable company. Again, I like my John Deere tractors, but their focus tells me they aren't focused on what they say is important to them and that tells me it's not important to them despite what they say. I'm happy I'm not the only one that feels a little put out. Thanks for watching. I think come Jan. 1, I will make another video highlighting this issue...not that Deere would seem to care.

Well I think a 455 would be a step down from my 430! Sure the foot controls are convenient but the size, sound and overall capability of the 430 is impressive. It looks sounds and drives like a tractor. I did consider the 455 while deciding but with enough weight and the right tires the 430 is unstoppable, mine has the 44 loader too with the factory 3Pt.

I think we'll agree to disagree. I think the geometry of the front heavy 430 makes loader work more difficult and the basic ergonomics of the 4X5 is far better than the 4X0 series, but that may be personal preference. The 430 is about 200 pounds heavier, no argument there.

I decided not to wait on JD parts to be made, and I bought a bell crank for my 2025R off Ebay ($53). This one was fabricated with steel and welded(much stronger). It took me less than 45 minutes to install, and would probably take someone who has done it before about 25 minutes. I suggest you put the tractor on level ground and block the wheels for safety. Use a 13mm wrench (a 1/2 inch will also work, but remember the two bolts are metric, M8 - 1.25) and it is helpful to have a long screwdriver for leveraging off the rod that goes back to the rear axle/brake. When finished, I replaced the cotter pin with a new one. Remember that the rod (which goes to the back of the tractor) is on springs and can be pulled forward by hand, to help you line up the brake rod hole in the crank. Both original bolts through the bell crank do NOT have nuts. You will see that the original bolts (when backing them out) will literally eventually hit part of the frame, but if you tip the head of the bolt back and wriggle, you have just enough room to get the bolts completely out. I used a ratcheting 1/2" box wrench, but then had to switch to a crescent wrench, otherwise the ratcheting wrench will get stuck [because the bolts are flanged] when the bolt is nearly out. Note that only the axle (?) itself is threaded. I discovered that the original bell crank is cast [aluminum ???] and cheaply made. The cast crank is only threaded about 25%. There is no need to jack the tractor up because there is plenty of room [unless you have a big stomach] to crawl on your back under the right side of the tractor. The bell crank is on the RIGHT side of the tractor, directly beneath where the heal of your shoe is, when your right foot is on the (foreward/reverse) pedals. It's a simple fix because the part is 100% metal and there is no electronics or plastics, etc., involved. Local people are fabricating them from steel in their shops [welding]. JD plans on sending techs to your home and doing the needed replacements there, so you don't have to go to a dealership. But the fix is pretty easy, if you want to do it yourself. Again, I got the part for about $53 from someone probably fabricating them in their garage or metal working job. Honestly, a 12 year old boy could probably figure out how to do the removal/installation, but remember, the rod that goes between the crank and the rear brakes is with springs so it can be easily moved back and forth to line it up with the crank hole (top) again. [Don't have the parking brake on when doing the replacement.] When you take off the original (cast) bell crank and hold it, you will see how cheaply it is made and realize why it cracks for so many people.

I recently bought a 4Runner, all 100% Japanese assembled with all 100% Japanese parts, a rarety in today's manufacturing game. Nice video. One of the few that shows a bit of the fuse box cabling. (My 1025r is a 2014) What no one seems to mention is that the "Add a Fuse" pigtail included in the kit will work if you connect it to the F08 circuit and ONLY if you use both the original fuse from F08 AND the supplied 10a fuse supplied by Summit. Those 2 sets of tiny slots on the pigtail are wired in parallel. The original fuse completes the main Starter part of the circuit. Next, that slot is wired to the next slot used by the Diverter. More detail: On my 2014 1025r, F08 is labeled as "Ignition Run Power". Removing that fuse will not allow the starter to actuate. Plugging in the "add a circuit" pigtail gives you two circuits: the 1st set of slots are directly on top of the pins. The second slot, off center, is the diverter circuit. This info was not detailed in the PDF that accompanied the Diverter. As of today, none of the videos I've looked at go into much detail of the circuit install. I found this info on GreenTractorTalk.com SCUT section discussing a similar installation. Next, grounding the circuit is required. The existing ground straps are quite visible and accessible. Most videos show its location. However, if you don't want to disturb that ground mounting, you can use an adjacent, threaded hole on the engine block. Purchase an M8-1.25 X 16 flange bolt. This matches the threads of the adjacent hole in the block. Make sure it's the 16mm bolt. Too large and it won't tighten the ground cable(s). Too short and it won't handle additional connections. *Much thanks to the OP, "Keane" on GreenTractorTalk.com for this valuable insight (and education!).
