Banjo tunes galore! I'm slowly adding instructional and "bragging" videos to this channel. It will remain small. It is intended mostly for an audience of old-time banjo pickers.
Rollin&Tumblin, clawhammer
I neglected to upload Rollin' and Tumblin' some time ago, but here it is. I base this on the famous Muddy Waters version of the song. Waters filled in between the melody lines with a riff. He did three reps of the riff on some recordings, but I liked two reps better and play that here.

Who's been talkin'? Clawhammer banjo blues.
มุมมอง 542ปีที่แล้ว
I learned the Howlin' Wolf song "Who's Been Talkin'" from a Samantha Fish performance and recording. This clawhammer banjo arrangement took me over a year off and on to work up. In the process I changed the mode (So you don't need to tell me that it's wrong!). Among the reasons I like the song is that the narrator guy recognizes in the middle of the song the his partner's leaving is his fault, ...
What a friend we have in Jesus: Bluesy version.

Here's a bluesy version with guitar of an old gospel song that we sang in Arkansas. I'm thankful that I can still play guitar some, despite arthritic hands and dyslectic fingers. The statue in the background, should you be curious, is a confrontational ceramic piece by my daughter.

Here is the Merle Travis song accompanied on resophpnic guitar with Travis style picking. Some rattles make the guitar sound a bit sitar like today.
Pistol Slappin blues

Can’t be satisfied, aka Postol Slappin blues on clawhammer banjo in sawmill tuning capped to B.
Painted Black, with Clawhammer banjo.

Blues on the banjo! Clawhammer version of an old blues song with string bending, triplets, and chords . Banjo in B sawmill tuning.
Whatever Lola Wants.

A song from the broadway musical, Damn Yankees. Check the originals on TH-cam if interested.
Sounds of Silence, a variation of the Simon and Garfunkel song, with banjo and vocals.
มุมมอง 2.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Sounds of Silence-This time with vocal. I posted an instrumental version earlier (Sound of Banjo). The phrasing varies from verse to verse, and one verse has a line stretched out with about a third extra beats (or syllables, or words). It has taken me a while to be able to sing and play it together.
Stand by me, banjo and vocal

Stand by me, a classic soul/R&B song-however , with banjo.

This is amazing!! Do u have tabs for this?
@@timmyg4295 No, I have no tabs. I’m terrible at reading or writing them. Maybe you know that you can use the cogwheel icon to slow the video to help work out the notes.
Just got a banjo from my girlfriend for Christmas Imma learn this for her by next Chrustmas
@@luisrauda1925 Great! There’s lots of clawhammer banjo instruction vids on TH-cam. Check Tom Collin’s or Jim Pankey for two among many.
Happened upon this as I was getting ready to start my day. Beautiful! Lovely song and wonderful talent
@@HorseObsessedGrrl Thanks! There’s a singing version of Sounds of Silence on my channel also. Check it out.
Wonderful!!
Heck yeah!!!
@@roserious If you claw banjo, I added a brief vid showing the fingering.
Wise banjo man
@@MountainOfSmilingBodies Thanks, I think.
This is simply amazing!
That is a great song. Do you have any sort of tab for it?
@@worldofwelding1303 Sorry! I’m no good at writing or reading tab. But here’s a start: I tune to G minor capoed up 2 frets. I couldn’t do anything on it until I did that.
@@lewh4354 Alright, thanks. I'll give it a shot.
This is incredible 😍😍
Love this version ! I’d like to learn it, may I ask you about the tuning ?
Sorry, I haven’t been getting notices from TH-cam. The banjo is in G modal tuning, gDGCD. Thanks!
@@lewh4354 no worries, thank you !
I love some Howling Wolf. This reminds me of Junior and Buddy also. Sounds really cool. Thanks!
Thanks! The banjo and clawhammer are rooted in Africa, just like the blues, so why shouldn't this sound cool!
Go, Lew! Happy New Year!
Thanks! Best to you!
I love this!!!! Very groovy.
Thanks, Lillyanne! How was playing at the Smithsonian Festival in DC?
Unique sound - nice one.
Thanks! I like to get out the usual "old Appalachian tunes" genre to show the breath of styles with clawhammer.
Awesome! Love it.
Thanks!
Very Cool! Two finger..What is the tuning?
Thanks! But actually it's my weird way of clawing the banjo--basically downstroke with index frailing finger, and middle finger strum or dit note. Two finger index lead might work. Tuning is sawmill G. (gDGCD).
Thank you..
Lew, send us more, please!
I'm happy to send more, but I'm slow at this. It is a challenge to adapt blues to clawhammer (or is it the other way around?). I'm slow at it but working on it. Meanwhile, check out the other "things you don't expect to hear on banjo" here on my YT channel.
@@lewh4354 I understand, Lew! You're doing a good job at it...better than I could.
love it!
Thanks! It's not your usual claw!
we love it Lew!
Thanks, Joe! Getting this far on this song was a challenge, but a fun one!
Thank you Sr.! That's was such good! Greetings!
Thanks so much! I had fun working out the guitar part.
Wow! any chance you know what tuning this in?
Thanks! I play this in double C tuning--gCGCD--for the key of C minor.
Its the sound of silence
Yes. There's a vocal version here too, capoed up 5 frets to fit my voice.
I've listened to this several times over tht past couple of years, its the video of yours i enjoy listening to and share the most. I'm still new at playing clawhammer, but have learned Old Spinning Wheel from your site, am working on others, enjoy you style immensely.
Thanks so much. I try on most songs to make the melody notes louder than the drones, but I made this tune to be full of chords, so there are a lot of brush strokes.
Inspiring…..I’ve got a way to go yet but thank you ! 🪕🤝
Thanks! Keep picking!
Great job. Where did you find that song?
I made up the song about a short girl with long hair I had a crush on.
I could say taylor swift is talented but I won't because HE is not😅
Nobody can play and sing at the same time without a computer program these days. That's pretty damn good in my opinion.
Thanks, Ric. I'm old, so I've been singing (sometimes poorly) for 75 years, playing guitar for over 60. That was all before computer assistance was available.
I play acoustic I MENT what i said. No being phacecios.😊
Very cool buddy
I just wanted to use the sound of a banjo meme and accidentally stumbled upon something beautiful. Thank you for this.
You're welcome. I'm glad you like it.
Skills
Thanks buddy it's 3 am & I'm sitting here wide awake nice job.
Thanks! It's a bit late to say this, but try to get some sleep.
Yo, where can i find the tab for this. Great job!
Gosh, I don't have tab, and I'm awful at writing it. It my help to use the cogwheel icon to slow the video. The tuning is double D.
the sound of silence on banjo beutiful
Thanks! I think it makes a wonderful banjo tune!
Fantastic.
Thanks!
Great!!
Nice! I’ve never heard of this song before, I like it (:
It's an earlier version of Rollin' and Tumblin'. The original recording doesn't come to mind. You can google lyrics
As a banjo player, I approve 👍
I'm happy that you approve.
Wow you are too cool. Lots of respect. Those blue notes and bends are amazing.
Thanks so much. I decided to try blues clawhammer 10 or 15 year ago. I Dion't know many blues songs, but the flatted 7ths and 3rd and bends come almost automatically now. Sometimes they slip out in oldtime fiddle tunes that I play.
Great picking is that a deering artisan?
Deering, yes, but it is the open back version of their Sierra model which is more commonly a bluegrass resonator banjo. It has the heavy tone ring of a bluegrass banjo,.
@@lewh4354 wow it has a beautiful tone. I have a deering artisan. I really love my banjo. That is a gorgeous banjo. Thank you for sharing.
@@Orourkebanjo Thanks! I like a lot of different banjo tones, and this one especially. I think I had a hand towel stuffed in it to make it quieter while. I sing this in a separate video, but I had to capo up five frets.
Wonderful absolutely wonderful
It was perfect. Love it. I will tell my friends about you
Perfect Banjo gameplay 10/10 will tell my kids from it very good banjo Pro gamer
I could never sing that! I love hearing you again after all these years, old friend
Thanks! I heard it on jukeboxes in the sixties, but first liked the melody as a banjo tune, then decided to sing it. Too many lyrics to memorize, though!
Very nice
Awesome 👍
Thanks 🤗
Well done sir. The tuning please. Thanks sir
Double C: gCDCD, Key is C minor.
@@lewh4354 thank you sir.
not gonna lie a banjo plays great metal music!
As a banjo player, I don’t really see it being used in metal. That’s just my opinion, though.
@@lasses0450 cuz you were captivated by its non metal original use. I wish you were there when I picked one up at GC and was jamming. songwise, would be good as an intro i would think. the fade out and fade in to a electric riff
Maybe piped through an overdrive pedal?
There are electric 5-string banjos. A tele can be modified with a banjo neck to get whatever guitar sound you want.
honestly banjo is my favorite instrment
Awesome! Just Amazing!!
Thanks! I'm just playing a simple downstroke bum-ditty on this wonderful song with nice lyrics and melody.
