    The competition had clear rules, clearly announced in advance, that all players agreed to play by. The relevant rule in this case was: play tiebreak games until there was a winner over the board (or until one of them quits or dies, I suppose). Any result arrived at by the players other than by that termination rule necessarily involves match fixing. The moment Magnus proposed splitting the title, he was engaged in match fixing. The moment Nepo agreed to make the proposal, he was engaged in match fixing. The subsequent discussion about how they might get their way was fixing a mechanism by which their earlier match fixing could be realized. It is planning the heist rather than deciding to do a heist. You don't "joke" about things like that while the result of the match is still undetermined. That's ridiculous. That's like "joking" about there being a bomb in an airplane while you are in the departure lounge. Chess players can play against each other for friendship or personal gratification any day of the year; but when they are in someone else's sporting arena they are playing for the fans. The entire purpose of a sporting competition with prize money and a title is to entertain the fans. The fans want to see an exciting battle between the best combatants; that's why there is prize money and a title at stake - to encourage the best players to show up and put in their best effort to the finish. There may be special or unforeseeable situations where it can't happen as planned; but this wasn't one of them. The moment title-splitting was proposed, FIDE should have disqualified Magnus for match fixing. If no arbitor was present at that moment, if the first FIDE became aware of the proposal was after both players had agreed to it, then both players should have been disqualified for match fixing, and the titles and prize money not awarded in 2024. Alternatively, if that is too harsh or if FIDE still wanted a proper result, then each player should have been taken into a separate room and given a choice: (a) continue the match as per the original rules, or (b) be disqualified. If both agree to continue; the match continues; if only one agrees to continue, he wins, the other loses; and if both refuse to continue, they are both disqualified. First and second place are left vacant for 2024, and the associated prize money is not awarded. If FIDE felt extremely generous, they could allow Magnus & Nepo to share second place, split the second-place prize money, and leave the first place vacant for 2024. I prefer the harsher punishment: double disqualification. Match fixing has to be discouraged.

If a match ends in a tie and the PKs go to 3-3, the coaches can agree to stop the match and declare both teams as Champions!!! . . . After all both teams are playing high quality futbol and both teams deserve to win.

    • @oldoddjobs
      @oldoddjobs 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Penalty kicks are even more arbitrary than armageddon chess, maybe there should be two champions, or just replay the final. Settling matches with deliberately chancey sudden-death scenarios has always been a melodramatic gimmick. At least nepo&carlsen fought to a deadlock unlike football teams boring the world to tears for 30mins until the penalty lottery begins. This event shows how ludicrous decisiveness bias is - judgements are based on winner/loser dichotomy & performance is ignored. If you score the winning penalty you become "the better side", "deserving champion" etc in the minds of those suffering this affliction

    • @dontvoteforanybody3715
      @dontvoteforanybody3715 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If those are the rules FIFA wants, and announces in advance, and every team is OK with those rules, I don't have any objection. But that isn't the present case, so it is utterly irrelevant.

    Really? The players are not to be blamed? Did they think about thousands of people watching the competition? In the Olympics a suggestion was given with no caveat- "if they don't agree , we will carry on.." This is match fixing -abominably" Why didn't them or yourself criticised FIDE before the tournament for the rule? Once the rule is made, either you play or forfeit. Simple. You perhaps remember that tennis match when match continued for 2 days because they refuse to lose, share or FIX! Magnus is losing respect with millions of chess fans! So sad. Never thought that someone like Magnus will fix the results!

  • @jespernorgaard3795

    FIDE made a blunder by not introducing any type of Armageddon to stop a runaway match, Ju Wenjun played 5 draws before winning the sixth, it would have been a disaster if any 2 players continued to agree to draws indefinitely, I suppose they would have to make a hasty decision of Armageddon but that just shows that Armageddon could never have been avoid, if the players were content to keep drawing. The indefinite format was a disgrace, just like the Kasparov-Karpov match demonstrated.

    • @dontvoteforanybody3715
      @dontvoteforanybody3715 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Armageddon is a much stupider way of deciding a world title. The tiebreak rule in this tournament was clear, and every player had agreed to it before the even began. It was a perfectly functional tiebreak rule; nothing the slightest bit wrong with it. That's why nobody even thought of complaining about it. Curiously enough, BOTH Karpov and Kasparov objected to changing the termination rule for their first match. They BOTH wanted to continue with the "indefinite format." Why was their wish to play by the per-arranged rules rejected while Magnus and Nepo's wish to CHANGE the rules were accepted? That was the foolish mistake FIDE made.

    Scandal is a completely ridiculous word here. ”The spectators want a winner”, ok, let’s toss a coin then, problem solved. To me the players are more important than the spectators. After one day of intense games, going on until someone blunders out of fatigue would be to choose a loser, not a winner. I was very happy with the result, I have no problem sharing the world with two champions.

    • @dontvoteforanybody3715

      We don't hold sporting competitions so that the players can toss a coin to pick a winner. We don't have sporting competitions so the players can hug each other and "share" the prize money and the title. It's not for the players that we have sporting competitions; it is for the organizers and the fans. If it were for the players, they could get together any Monday and play a match on whatever terms they like. We have sporting competitions so the fans can watch a real competition. We want a winner and a loser because that produces the most exciting competition.

    That video of Magnus speaking to Ian, while they were awaiting the decision on their proposal to share the title, was for me the most revealing. For Magnus to allow himself to be caught on video saying that if FIDE refuses to agree to their proposal then they will just play a succession of quick draws, presumably until FIDE relents and gives them what they want, is either incredibly stupid or a naked power play to break the FIDE grip on chess. I know Magnus has since tweeted that he was just joking, but does anybody really believe he was not perfectly serious? And Ian (he of the infamous knight dance incident) appeared to be fine with that idea. These guys need to remember that their big paydays depend on the fans wanting to follow their games. Perhaps there are a few fans who are fine with WWE style kayfabe but I am sure the vast majority of us want to see real competition where the participants are trying their best to win events (I say "events" not "games" because obviously there will be times when a strategic draw is the best way to proceed in any one game) and we want the assurance that nothing is "fixed". I suggest that all top players, and FIDE leadership, take the time to brush up on the history of baseball's Black Sox Scandal.

      I am sorry - are you telling me that chess has no draws? Chess - famously - is the ONLY game where professional games can be prearranged as draws. Read Tony Miles book where he describes prearranging a draw with someone who blunders in the opening - he honours the agreement anyway - but rubs the square with his finger, to point out the blunder. Chess is not just fixed - players write about it in their biographies.

      The first mistake FIDE made was not disqualifying Magnus the moment he proposed ending the match in a manner inconsistent with the perfectly clear rule he had agreed to before the tournament began. Even proposing to share the title was already match fixing. This isn't complicated.

  • @jonsirulesx9929

    Before you blame the players I would ask you to answer a simple question - If you were in either Magnus' or Ian's position would you honestly take the risk of losing both the title and additional money when you could guarantee both? Both players had something to gain from sharing the title - for Magnus it means that he still holds a World Chess title for the twelfth straight year and for Ian it is a first World title, plus they both increased their guaranteed prize money. Also, the two players didn't just come to an agreement between themselves and walk off, they asked the organisers FIDE if they could share the title. FIDE could, and arguably should, have said No, but they didn't. So, if you have to blame someone blame FIDE. This situation has parallels in other activities with the best known being the Men's High Jump at the 2021 Olympics. Both Barshim from Qatar and Tamberi from Italy had identical records, and their records were still identical after the first series of tie-break jumps, so they asked if they could share the title and the officials agreed, and both received Gold medals.

      The players can play for friendship or their own gratification any day of the year they like. When they show up to a competition, however, they are expected to compete. That's what the rules are there to ensure. A sporting competition with prize money and titles is not for the players; it is for the organizers and fans. What the players want is completely irrelevant once they enter the sporting arena. What dictates are the rules of the competition that all players agreed to before it began. This is not complicated or debatable.

    It definitely doesn't count as match-fixing in my opinion because these two players reached the final fair and square and showed equal resolve to win. Also, I think their decision to call the match a draw was logical given the lack of an armageddon tie-break which meant that it was a sudden death situation that no player wanted to risk. The mistake was clearly FIDE's in not anticipating this eventuality and being forced to compromise on its own rules by allowing for two world champions. A bizarre situation which however shows camaraderie and fair play on the part of the opponents.

      No player wanted to risk the sudden death situation ? That’s ridiculous . Why play the game at all if both players are afraid of losing . People came to see a contest and want a decisive result . Just because armegeddon was not stipulated doesn’t mean the players should take it upon themselves to agree to share the title . With that kind of thinking we may as well consider Magnus and Caruana as Co- World Champions when they drew the classical portion of their match . And this was just a blitz match which has even less import in the grand scheme of things . A totally lame decision on the part of both players . This is something I think a competitor like Fischer would have never agreed to. Lost even more respect for Carlsen after this to go along with what he showed after the Niemann fiasco .

Having stayed up to watch the match, I felt that the outcome was a 'swindle' in that there can only be one World Champion in any individual discipline at a time, in any contest.
