Saw the game live. Nb2 was brilliant, a positional masterstroke by Ding Liren! Gukesh would later say that he underestimated that move. What a thrilling start to this World Chess Championship! Applauding from the Philippines!😊🙏💕👏

That was very smooth play from Ding. I must say I was not expecting that but now he is in the drivers seat.

The French Defense has been used in world championship matches many more than three times. Going back to the Botvinnik-Smyslov and Botvinnik-Tal matches. The first Spassky-Petrosian match saw several French games and Korchnoi used it twice against Karpov in 1978.

very exciting stuff good that Gukesh was not afraid to try novelties

I think the correct stat is the French has been used three times in game 1 in world championships. Daniel Naroditsky then misinterpreted it on commentary. As CrChandler points out above it has been used many times

It is amazing that Gukesh got into the kind of position I would with pawns up the board and the enemy behind. You don't need an engine to tell you they are in deep trouble then.

I love your commentary. Please find a way to show 1. Players remaining game times, 2. Players live ratings, 3. Game evaluation bar. You need this to compete with the big boys. This upgrade to your channel will help you grow your subscription numbers. Keep up the good commentary!

Daniel King doesn’t show the game evaluation bar nor does he show players time usage . And he’s definitely one of the ‘ big boys ‘ . Maybe you should let him know he doesn’t meet your standards.

It would have been nice to present some deeper analysis of how the game could have continued after Bc5 . The generalities are helpful but some concrete lines would have been instructive too .

I think the last player to win game 1 with black was Kramnik in ‘04, but I could be wrong.

This request is not chess related but ris related. I am studying danish and noticed that have some really funny phrases when translated to english such as fresh like and eagle = energetic and der er ingen ko paa isen or there are no cows on the ice meaning everything is ok . Could you share any funny dutch phrases with us?

Qxh7 is not brilliant if it loses on the spot to Qd4 + . But still a tactic worth illustrating.

Well played by Gukesh, but Ding will strike back
