How I Improved The A4LD Transmission in My Ford Ranger
Check the end of the video for pictures/ part numbers of the parts I bought.
My planned maintenance schedule for the A4LD:
Fluid changes every 4th oil change (12k miles)
Change remote mount filter once a year
Change internal filter every 3rd transmission fluid change (every 36k miles)
Hopefully my A4LD lasts a while, but if it doesn’t, oh well, I’ll save up and swap in a tougher, better built A4LD.

12:51 Broooo hose that crap off and wax the paint while you have access.
Take the new spindles apart and remove the brging inside covers 😊😊
Good mower but I don’t like the hood set up, makes it hard to work on 😮, but it’s still running great and is the most reliable mower I’ve ever owned 😊
Hell yeah, that's a sweet Ranger!! I've got a super beat up looking '91 with the 3.0 V6 and the A4LD, but mechanically it's an absolute beast. I don't tow or anything really, but I'm coming up on 200k and it's still kicking ass. Thanks for the video and the advice. Please tell your cat I said hi 🤣 I heard the little fella in the background. EDIT I typed that last part before I saw him at the end. 🤣
I have a 1996 Corolla 5 speed. I paid $1600 for it 10 yrs ago in almost mint condition and am still driving it. I won't let it go until the wheels fall off. Previously, i had 1992's as well, with automatic 3 speed plus overdrive. They were voted that year's most reliable vehicle and i believe it. I won't drive a car that won't start every time.
No range degradation between refuelings is the best and also most eScooters use a planned obsolescence proprietary battery pack that no one makes and is hard to get out and replace. The low fuel density of batteries is bad and the decent performing ones are always overpriced and won’t work after a few years, basically a rich kid throwaway toy.
any chance you have the owners manual for this model that you have?
My only issue is the sound. It's a bit too loud for my area I think.
1996 Toyota Corolla DX made in Canada with 250K miles in South Florida
Be careful removing ethanol from gas. The ethanol is the octane booster. If you remove it then you will lower the octane rating. If your so concerned about it then just go to your nearest airstrip and get some 100LL. It’s a lot cheaper then canned fuel. Be aware 100LL (low lead) has TEL (tetraethyl lead) in it, so don’t use it in anything that has a catalytic converter or oxygen sensor. The lead will coat these things and destroy them in a few tankfuls of gas. We will be seeing unleaded avgas soon so getting ethanol free unleaded gas will be as easy as going to the nearest airstrip.
Ethanol isn’t an issue anymore. All newer equipment, and any replacement carb kits and fuel hose are ethanol resistant. I run it in all my equipment and haven’t had a single issue in over a decade. Granted I had lots of issues with it dissolving carburetor rubber parts and fuel hoses when they started putting it in gas. Those parts have all been replaced and the issue is non existent unless you are running some vintage equipment that still has its original rubber fuel system parts. As for phase separation and issues with leaving gas in stuff over the winter, don’t leave gas in your equipment and don’t keep cans of gas laying around for months or years. If you don’t use much gas then don’t fill up a bunch of 5 gallons cans! Just use a 1 gallon can. Otherwise just rotate out your gas once a month or so. Simply dump the cans into your car and then refill them. All you have to do is run your equipment out of gas and drain the carb bowl if your putting it away for the season. Ethanol free gas will still gum up a carburetor if you leave it in your engine for a long time. In fact it will gum it up worse.
Hard pass.
Where do you order the cheap parts from. I'm only finding spindles for 110
This was a while ago. I got them on Amazon, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve went up a lot, most parts have really went up lately unfortunately.
Hello kyle i bought 97 Corolla (161k miles) same colour last year. From since i bought during car in traffic the engine temperature is going from down to exactly into middle and engine rpm is decreasing and vibrating, so i use to reduce the temperature by turning the heater on, and during this is summer i can also see my coolant turned from green to brown. Can you give me the solution
That’s normal, it will idle down once it warms up, and the needle is supposed to sit right in the middle of the gauge. the vibration is normal, but it might be worth taking a look at your motor mounts. Bad mounts will really amplify this vibration, That is a common issue with these cars, I’ve had to change all of the mounts on mine. As for the coolant, I’d just do a coolant flush, it should be red/pink, not brown.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 thanks for the information Kyle and your time 😊.
No links for parts in description??
They’re in there. Scroll to the bottom. Some are listed at the end of the video as well.

I found a Corolla 2 SR 1.6 automatic as a hatchback apparently it was only sold in Japan, any common problems?
Make sure to check/change the differential fluid on that 3 speed auto, a lot of people forget about it. Other than that you’re golden.
I bought one a year or so a go at a goodwill store it a Goped Super Razor 3V ,I got it home gased it up it runs but Boggs out when I give it throttle? Anyone got any idea’s on how to fix it ? Sure would like to get it running on the street . 🤔
If it’s got a non adjustable carburetor, it’s time to clean and rebuild that carburetor, if it’s adjustable, try and richen the high speed needle and see what it does. If it doesn’t take an adjustment, rebuild and clean.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 👍🏼
Much appreciated

I have a A4LD in my Bronco I use off road. Cooling is everything in this Trans. As for fluid gushing from the front seal, this is a simple fixed by oversizing the front seal bleed off holes in the bell housing and pump to bring down the pressure. This will fix the seal leak. In addition to over sizing the return holes, be sure to use the upgraded bell housing to trans mounting bolts that include "O" rings not the old rubberized washers. Besure to give each bolt a good dose of silicone to back up the "O" rings. While you're into the trans, make sure to upgrade the intermediate servo to the OD servo AB standard, but keep the springs the same as OEM. Also if you dare, while the bell housing is off, install at new overdrive band. It's sitting directly behind the pump, an easy upgrade. And lastly, cooling, A4LD are subject to overheating. I have two oil coolers in mine. One has it's own fan, the other is a pre-cooler at the front of the truck before the fan cooler. The A4LD is a great trans once upgraded with these simple easy fixes. th-cam.com/video/iVgQQbGWviQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you!! This comment is EXACTLY why I made this video. I saved this and put it in my a4ld notes file. I am not experienced with automatic transmissions, this is my first one since I was a teenager and I really appreciate the info. That type of knowledge about an old transmission is nearly impossible to find.
Location of the relay would've been nice!!!
Did you say that it was a 39 cc that was on there? Do those exist with 49 cc?
How big of an engine can you put on those? 😂 I just asked because I’d like to experiment one day in building one.
I just found this video from you. Looks to be about four years old.. does your opinion still stand on both the performance and price difference ofa go-ped versus a Escooter? on my channel, you can see the goofy thing that I built, which is a gas bicycle, which is absolutely beautiful reaching me anywhere between 18 and 23 mph consistently and I get give or take 50 to 60 miles off of it ! I’ve been thinking of trying to build a gas powered scooter, but it looks like I need a whole new scooter and can’t just use the cheap kids scooter that I currently own😂. As much as I love peddling and dealing with my bike, it currently doesn’t work because of a rear wheel axle issue . I’ve been thinking of getting a scooter like this that is purely throttle only and no obvious way to push it like a normal scooter as I know of . Is the price to performance worth it? Although I could look up this last question, I thought I’d ask you since you clearly have one at least in this video . I see that it uses friction drive instead of via a chain . Do they still work that way to this day? I’ve never used friction Drive before but then again my first ever engine on a bicycle was recent and it’s the only time I’ve ever worked with a 49 cc engine or any engine before
The performance of E scooters has greatly improved in the past few years. I still rip my gopeds around and prefer them because I enjoy small engine repair and they are MUCH cheaper. I weigh 200 lbs and the gopeds work great, I can even jump over stuff with them and I haven’t broken one yet. Friction drive works very well, they do not like wet pavement, they will stop moving, there are spindles that fix that issue though. I would look for a goped Bigfoot on marketplace, that one is a million times more comfortable than the goped sport.
I have found all of my gopeds for less than $100 each on facebook marketplace over a few years. They are out there, but they aren’t common and you’ve got to get them as soon as they are posted, people still want them I guess!
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 I also currently weigh about 200 pounds with plus or -10 pounds depending on the month. The wet spindles actually make a lot of sense as if it gets wet. You’re pretty much screwed. Lol
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 yeah because brand new there as much as an E scooter, which seems to be around $1000 which seems extremely ridiculous to me, especially when a 39 cc engine itself is only $200 lol. I’ll keep an eye out and thanks for the advice.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 i tried!!! nothing close to me....which means driving 200+ miles aaand for anything working its like 300$+ I live in twinsburg OH which is I guess a "nice neighborhood" so stuff like my gas bike and these little scoots are VERY uncommon :(
Please help. Does an automatic 94 corolla have a cabin filter?
No, none of the 93-97 cars do. Which is the main issue with mine right now. Junk and debris got all in the evaporator core, it started molding and stinking, and now I’ve gotta pull the dash to clean everything. I’ll probably do it in a few months. There will be a video on it.

But a guy I know ended up finding a old Honda elite 50 and I wouldn't trade it for 10 taos that were brand new. I love your elite it's super nice for its year model and it's not the restricted engine. You better hold on to her and it hasn't had the oil tank that res 👍 . You have a keeper my friend.
Where is the fuse located
Hey, not sure that you would remember this now, but I want to see if my relay is the issue. Would I hear it click on when I turn the key to “start” or does it click when it goes to “on”, going to try to listed for it engaging but curious to know when I should focus on the click sound of it engaging. Thanks!!
When you go to start it, if I were in that position, I would make sure the signal wire on the starter solenoid (on starter) is getting power, if it is, then you need a new starter, if not, wiring issue.
