I SWORE I Wouldn't Do This! Re-Installing GE Smart Switches
I PROHIBITED the use of these in my home several years ago. But with our Tesla Solar and Powerwall integration, I decided to give these GE Smart Switches another shot. This was a very frustrating experience!!
Don't buy these switches!! I won't even link to this garbage as my fingers HURT!!

    I started with Jasco GE Z wave switches like these. My house almost never has a power failure, yet these switches failed for me constantly. I had probably 40 as well and have replaced at least 30 of them. After about 20 I stopped buying this brand and started switching to just the cheap switches that don't need a hub but are still Alexa compatible. Those cheap ones have yet to fail for me. As time goes on I'm letting these GE switches fail and removing them from the system. They were expensive, I think I paid around $30 each, compared to maybe $10 each for the cheap ones that last well.

    I have a bunch of those GE smart switches that have been in operation for about 5 years. I'm wondering what the real lifespan of these will be. I settled on these with limited knowledge when I first got them. Luckily, I have only had one go bonkers on me (pretty sure it was after a power outage) that I replaced.

    I'm considering two wifi wired right now, to replace two other PITA smart but dumb doorbells 😅, the wiring part helped, mine will have two jumpers though. How that works is puzzling to me, appears to create dead shorts.🤔 I think they will work for me. I'm curious what horsepower your Home Assistant instance is for video display? I currently only have HA Green hooked up. It was a good & informative video that was helpful to me.

    • @JoshsSmartHome
      @JoshsSmartHome 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I run Home Assistant Green also. Therefore, you shouldn’t have problems with the video. I’m confused about the jumpers. If the jumpers are in series it shouldn’t be a problem. If you are saying they are parallel to each doorbell, I’m not sure if the power would be enough or not.

    • @dave1383
      @dave1383 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JoshsSmartHome I just meant in my two doorbells scenario, one jumper goes from trans to front and one goes from trans to side or rear, however they may be labeled. They would be in series.

      I had some extensions and such left over from the Govee brand which I sold online. If you are looking to use them, you could consider around windows, door, garage door, porch, deck, etc. you’d have to measure what you have and look at the spaces at your home and think outside the box.

    • @JoshsSmartHome
      @JoshsSmartHome 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I used the “Auth for Tesla” app on my iPhone. It may have change though, as the documentation says that the Owner API was deprecated and you may need to use the Fleet API. If your vehicle is affected by this (most likely), you'll need to install the Tesla HTTP Proxy add-on and configure the component to use it. Once you install the Tesla Custom Integration from HACS, you would need to follow the instructions in the documentation.

    Does it matter which direction you install the different sets of lights? We bought 2 100 ft sets but only have 1 outdoor outlet. So the lights go 2 different directions…will they sync to be continuous? Or will we have one set that goes each direction and them not be able to sync?

    • @JoshsSmartHome
      @JoshsSmartHome 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The direction doesn’t sync, but you can do things that ensure it’s not noticeable. 1) We have our split at a corner which immediately reduces the impact. 2) We use scenes that don’t have a natural progression in one direction. 3) We program things ourselves and can change the direction for the other string (counterclockwise instead of clockwise). I hope this helps!

    • @JoshsSmartHome
      @JoshsSmartHome 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It really depends on the scene. If you have a linear display, yes that can be a concern. I don’t worry about it much because it is split at a corner and another location where we don’t usually see it. You could program manually and “flip” one of them to make it more seamless.

      Yes! Not a single light has come off. The first 150 feet I’ve installed have been up for 18 months and the other 200+ feet of lights have been up for nearly 6 months. I did it when it was warm, so that could impact performance. Also people that have issues tend to not properly clean the surface.

    wiring to sensors is clear as there is no definite position in manual. Good job. by they way I see that you have the little Giant finger smasher ladder. use caution with that thing ! what a catastrophic design ! pull out the Pins and the wight of the stems will come smashing down on your fingers and Feet. I am surprised they are legal !

      Thanks for watching. I love our ladder, I can handle it although it’s heavy, so it works well for me.

    I just bought the asahom because they’re supposed to be spliceable. I don’t have a normal straight roof I have a cape cod with levels of eves. They’re supposed to be spliceable. They are absolutely not. Half the lights stopped working. I tried 3 times with different techniques and nothing worked. They would probably be fine for a rancher but if you have to go to a next floor in between strands, forget about it. I wrote a longer review on Amazon for the asahom. Wasted a lot of time including leaving work early to work in the daylight to try to get them to work. Would not recommend.

      I’m sorry you had a bad experience. Did you consider splicing at certain intervals? I’ve heard people have success splicing them but ONLY if the lights were grouped in sets of multiples of 4. I installed the Asahom on a 2 story house with a garage and we used extensions at the ends of the strings.

      The ASAHOM store has all sorts of Accessories to cover different situations, including a Tee connector and splicers which could be used for multiple eve locations.

      That’s a great point! I missed the forest for the trees here. Ideally, you would utilize the accessories available as your first option.

    I"ve had Govee lights and I just bought Asahom for my house and I 1000% prefer the Asahom app over Govee app, it's more user friendly with WAY better presets and just simple to use vs. the Govee app.

    Have you figured out how to set the timer in the app to turn them off automatically at a certain time? I figured out how to turn them on but not off

      These are set up at my friend’s house, so I haven’t. For my Govee, I use the automations in Google Home for the timer because I find it works better. If you have them connected to a voice assistant, I’d look at going down that route.

    So can we plug in these lights to outside connecter or does it have to be plugged into the attic ?

    • @JoshsSmartHome

      We have some of ours plugged in outside without issues. For the control box, I’ve been extra cautious, so I did put that in a box outside.

    So does that means with full charge and a gallon of fuel you get about 60 miles of range?

    • @JoshsSmartHome
      @JoshsSmartHome หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you only used 1 gallon then yes, that would be about 60 miles (30 electric then 30 gas). It has about a 16.5 gallon tank so with a charge and full fuel tank, it can go over 500 miles before you have to stop.
