Contact Sensor Showdown! Which is the best for you?
I put four Contact Sensors from Aqara, Third Reality, Meross, and Iris in a head-to-head showdown to see which one is the best for your home. I start with installing the new Aqara and Third Reality contact sensors I bought into Home Assistant. Then I put them through their paces in a head to head comparison test with an Iris contact sensor and Meross that I already setup. Then I wrap up with my final thoughts. Check it out so you know the best contact sensor for you!

Do you plan on giving an update on how the system performes? I would love to see some numbers and insights from the Tesla solar app.
Yes I plan to provide additional information once I have a bit more data. I monitor the system via the Tesla app, Home Assistant, and my utility data that I’m able to download. Stay tuned!
@@JoshsSmartHome great, looking forward to that video
Thank you! I appreciate the positive feedback!
It seems like there are pros and cons to the non-pro versus the pro version. It doesn’t appear that you have any brakes in your lights. We have several and we’re looking at the pro version because of that. I keep hearing that you cannot cut the non-version lights. Is that true?
Thanks for watching and great question! The non-pro doesn’t officially allow you to cut it, although there are several folks that documented cutting it successfully as long as you have it sectioned in increments of 4 lights (although one would reason that this voids the warranty if you care about that). My lights had 2 extensions. I used 1 just to extend the beginning of the one string to under my deck and I gave the other to a friend that installed ASAHOM brand (see my other video on that install). The 2 extensions included I believe were about 12’ each. Let me know if you need additional info.
@@JoshsSmartHome thanks for the reply. I will watch your video about the ASAHOM brand also.
You’re welcome. I was skeptical when I checked them out but I was really impressed!
i thought automation mean the house do everything with very little work from you, if you need to tap NFC tags all the time, why not just use a button ?
Thanks for watching and that’s a great question! Most of my home does have automations that do everything for you. In these places I can’t predict when I need the automation and I avoid the buttons in some places for three reasons. 1) I prefer the cheaper nfc when I have my phone on me. 2) outdoor locations (NFC under the trash can lid) is better to me 3) a button to unlock a door would allow anyone to do it, and that doesn’t provide security. With that being said, you are correct that NFC shouldn’t be the first option for automation!
@@JoshsSmartHome NFC is very unsafe for unlocking a door.
It’s an outside door for entry into our garage area. It’s not a door that actually enters our house. I feel fine with this level of security for this use case utilizing it through Apple Shortcuts and Home Assistant.
Nice pool!
Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Let me know below what you think of these lights!
Great video and how-to setup.. Stupid question: What if you have a basement with second doorbell chime? Cant find a way to buy a second door bell chime adapter. Any ideas?
Thanks for watching and great question. We never had a second chime before, but we wanted one in our basement. So we actually have it integrated with Amazon Alexa and we have an Alexa Dot in the basement that plays a chime when the button is pressed. We have a second one in the living room doing the same thing. The Google hubs also display the doorbell camera feed when it is pressed. Check out my 10+ Home Automations videos to see this and more!
Hi Josh can you tell how to order these adapters please I don't see these adapters on the product list of Meross website.
Fill out the form here www.meross.com/en-gc/mTerminal/support/accessory-acquire?manufacturer=Chamberlain&model=&pageFrom=pc&color=yellow and Meross will ship it to you separately.
@@JoshsSmartHome Thanks a lot brother.
You are welcome!
Josh nice video full of information, really needed as i have liftmaster too and was wonder too if they are compatible with Meross or not. Would be even more informative if you had shown how adopters were installed because for Liftmaster installation of adopters were main key to learn. Thanks Josh
Thanks for watching and the feedback! Almost all garage doors are compatible and they are associated with the learn button for the models that MyQ/Chamberlain made difficult. www.meross.com/support/compatibility-check is the link to check your model’s compatibility.
@@JoshsSmartHome I have Liftmaster 8550C with yellow learn button. When I checked compatibility it says adapter needed as you shown in your video. But these adapters not there in the list of product on Meross website.
I posted on the other thread.
Thanks for watching. Let me know what you think of our pool timer automation.
Not a fan of the Lutrons, but the Jascos are indeed garbage.
Thanks for watching. Certainly we all have different preferences, but I was wondering: What do you dislike about the Lutron’s?
I got the pro lights. This year Holidays at my house will be lit!!! I won't use the 3m take to attch them though because my HOA doesn't allow to have this. Maybe if I submit a request as a permanent install, hmmmm. But ama use light clip hangers that i found on Amazon. The screw in to the soffit but can unclip to remove the lights easily after tw holidays
Thanks for watching. You are going to love the lights! The 3m tape is hidden by the lights so the HOA doesn’t need to know (we won’t tell them). I would ask about a permanent install as that would be the best setup for you.
Thank you and your helper for posting this. My door is just the same.
Thanks for watching and the positive feedback!
Could you have taken off the original trim kit before you tried to insert into the existing can light?
I did try that as well and the rough in hole was much too large. The company has been in contact with me and I sent them pictures with all the measurements. They stated that they would consider alternate designs. Therefore I need to give credit to the company for following up on a positive manner.
Can I go with pro, 200 ft or should I get 2 100 fts [which works better for installation]
It really depends on your installation location. First, if you don’t have convenient outlets at boat locations, the 200 ft option would better fit your needs. I wanted the original (not pro) to match my already installed lights, but only pro allows exceeding 150 ft with one controller, so I needed 2. You could go with 2 100ft if you need them in a non-continuous setup with easy access outlets.
Love these lights. I like how you can leave them up all year long and use them for multiple different occasions.
Yes these are really great and super convenient!
Thanks for watching! Let me know below what you think!
I don't have time to watch a 20-min vid. I was hoping for a demo or chart or something showing the pros and cons of each, or how HA is superior to ST. I am a current ST user, and the system works for me. It's just that there are some devices out there that only work with HA (for now), and I need more than a 20-min rant on why you like HA more than ST.
Thanks for the feedback. To sum it up: Home Assistant has more compatibility, is more powerful, and has more local execution.
is the phone required to be unlocked or something?
Thanks for watching. Yes the phone needs to be unlocked to execute the nfc automation. This ensures security for anything such as unlocking doors.
Sick
Thanks for watching!
This was a helpful review. A solution like this, but local and early compatible with home assistant, with the secondary led light would be super useful for the use cases you mentioned and more. Hopefully someone nails it.
Thanks for watching! I totally agree. Hopefully a proper solution is out there or will be soon.
Thank you for the review. I just purchased one built 8/23 so hopefully they have fixed the transmission issue. Wife loves it and so do I always trying to use only ev mode when able.
Thanks for watching. It’s been great to us with the one transmission issue. That occurred about a year ago and no problems since. I’m sure you will continue to love yours!
@@JoshsSmartHome does this transmission have a dip stick? I came from a caravan so I’m looking for it. I don’t believe in lifetime fluids so I’ll be looking to drain and fill it in the near future.
I honestly don’t know. One of my best friends is a top mechanic around here, so he handles our vehicles. I may not end up having it too many years if a nice EV van is produced by somebody, haha.
I like your video!
Thanks for watching and thank you for the positive feedback!
Nice. Consider adding side surrounds. Either 1 set for the row that is your MLP or could do 2 sets matrixed. Also consider some acoustic panels for 1st reflection points on walls, ceiling and center area of back wall. Easy to DIY or reach out to GIK, Acoustimac, ATS acoustics.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. There is definitely room for improvements to be made. I have to dedicate some time to do them.
@@JoshsSmartHome part of the fun with a theater doing little upgrades over time
That’s definitely the truth!!!
Thanks for watching! Let me know below if you would install these.
Nice presentation, mirrors my 2017, which by the way is at 68,000. In the last 3 years only a warranty EGR valve replacemnet/cost 0 and a set of windshield wipers for a operating cost of $50. I really enjoy and trust mine. ..... Dick
I’m glad yours has been great too
You have any issues with light ghosting on the dimmer switch
Thanks for watching! We don’t have any issues with light ghosting on appropriate lights. The only place we had an issue was on very low powered lights for our theater steps. We had to use the ELV dimmer (electronic low voltage) version. We have locations where we have just one LED bulb and we don’t even have problems with those (maybe 7 or 8 watts on the switch). These are honestly my favorite smart home product!
Thanks for watching! Let me know below what you think of the Temperature and Humidity sensor.
Love how you mirror the screen on the side.
Thanks for the kind comment!
i bought the nfc tags from your link, that is a good deal!! thanks for posting this, i'm getting started with home assistant and have been watching a ton of home automation videos :)
Thanks for watching and glad I was able to help you find this great deal. The home automation arena is a lot of fun, welcome!
Very cool, like the old cinema colours mixed with new, cinema red not over kill
Thanks for watching and thanks for the positive comment!
Thanks for watching! Let me know what your favorite NFC automation is below.
Anybody that can tell me how to move all my zigbee devices from my smartthings hub to my home assistant hub, without running smartthings hub with my home assistant hub?
You need to exclude/delete the devices from SmartThings and then add them to Home Assistant using a coordinator such as the recently renamed SkyConnect. I do that in this video: DIY Smart Home: Home Assistant! (Initial Setup) th-cam.com/video/ZdAufh6bZes/w-d-xo.html
@@JoshsSmartHome Ok, gonna try it 🙏
Thanks for watching! Do you have any matter devices? If so, how do you like them?
I installed mine and updated firmware like you did. My doorbell camera works fine on the app but the light around the doorbell flashes orange. Wyze told me to reboot the doorbell which I did but the light continues to flash orange. It does go to solid blue after linking it on the app but shortly after it switches to flashing orange.
Thanks for watching. I didn’t have any of the problems you did after the firmware update. Did you attempt to factory reset the unit?
@@JoshsSmartHome Yeah I did that, still flashing orange. Wyze is sending me a new one.
I’m glad they are resolving it for you. It does sound like you got a defective unit.
@@JoshsSmartHome Got the new camera today. Same issue.
That’s very weird. What firmware version? I’m on 4.36.11.8391 and it’s been stable. Is your WiFi spotting in that area?
i'm not going to talk crap about the cables but that's a lot of network for TMO 5G....
Thanks for watching. So far, so good for the T-Mobile 5G home internet! It’s actually been comparable or superior to our Comcast, which was a monopoly provider for us.
That poor SkyConnect will be struggling af with interference from the LR AP (i suppose you use this one for 2.4 GHz).
Thanks for watching and the feedback! I probably should move it away some, but our zigbee network hasn’t had any issues even the last few weeks with the U6 LR there. We have a bunch of repeaters so it may just be suboptimal paths currently that I could resolve by moving it.
@@JoshsSmartHome well, you probably are very lucky with different channels, that aren't overlapping. :)
I set it up with the auto scan to determine the best channel, so maybe it was “smart” enough to avoid it.
You don't see it, but you know it is there :) But I know the feeling, my stuff is also in behind a door and there is some spaghetti.
Thanks for watching. As a typically organized person this stuff does eat at me, but I can ignore it sometimes.
Just dumped my eero 6 for dream wall. Your setup looks great man thanks for video
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the positive comment. I wanted Eero to be great, and it was ok just couldn’t handle the number of devices we had.
@@JoshsSmartHome yea I had the same experience! This isn’t to say anything about you or your experience… but when I researched eero I must’ve missed the caveat where it said 75 devices per NETWORK or 100 with 6e eero. I thought it was 75 per access point like the UniFi system and many others. I had devices dropping left and right, connecting them back would boot another off. Assigning IP’s made it better until I got down to the point some devices just couldn’t connect anymore. Dream wall is overpriced and missing some features (legit internal storage and a punch out for the wires at the top) but I love the form factor it looks so nice next to my media enclosure and power wall and SPAN panel haha. 😂 Anyways this was long winded. thanks again for video very positive and good vibes looking forward to more
I thought the Eero 6 Pro that we had was supposed to be 75 per access point as you said, but it definitely was falling flat on its face the more we expanded. I’m glad you (and I) are in a better place post-Eero.
Thank you for your video. It helped me understand Tesla solar panels better.
Glad it helped
Great sharing.
Thank you very much!
Just a quick tip. The access point is designed to be mounted horizontal. If you mount it to the wall you're missing out on all the coverage. The antennas will point up and down that way. It's like a flying saucer not flying flat for arow dynamics. It works but not vey good. Good luck!
Thanks for watching! The instructions I followed showed it as ok either way, but as you pointed out the ceiling mount is likely the optimal orientation.
At least loop the cables at the switch and the Dream Machine with some velcro cable ties.
Thanks for watching! Yes I probably do need to at least invest a small amount of time to do the minimum.
I mean, about that nest of cables, what if you need to find something? It's probably going to be very hard to trace cables with their being so many just tangled everywhere.
It’s a fair point. I do have a few different colors which is helpful and I have the wall ports labeled. I may label at some point, but for now I’m going to wait and see if I have a reason to do it.
Thanks for watching! Let me know below your honest thoughts.
I am looking to do this. Is it loud in your closet?
No. It’s certainly not as loud as a computer. I work in this room and I don’t hear it with the door closed.
Wow I’m surprised I thought it would be loud lol I want to do a full rack build im just worried about sound and power draw! lol
I haven’t tested the power draw yet, I think I might do that after I get some cameras up and running
I agree with you. I would also make cables the least of my worries. Especially when they are in a closet that no one sees. I would love to see in depth process when you set up cameras. I have been setting aside a little money every month until I can afford unify dream and cameras. I just recently found your channel and just want to say keep it up. I enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much! I’m planning on making an in-depth video of the cameras. I’m planning to buy more cameras and run the Ethernet cables, so it might be some time until I get it completed. I’m also gathering the funds to buy more cameras.
Those are cool. Was the price reasonable?
Thanks for watching! $300 for the smaller ones and $500 for the larger one that is around 8 feet wide. There is a discount code in the description, too!
Thanks for watching! Let me know what you think of these!
May I ask where you grew up? I've never heard a pronunciation of "open" like that. Not making fun, I just think regional accents are interesting.
Thanks for watching! I’m from South-central Pennsylvania. We have a heavy German and Amish influence.
@@JoshsSmartHome Wow, I thought I knew all the PA accents (I grew up in Philadelphia). Learn something new every day, thanks for the reply!
We do have a very unique accent in this area.
Bro that is the coolest thing 😮😮😮
Thank you! We love these blinds!
