What about timing how does this effect everything? What do you run yours at?
@@pittsmotorsports9806 timing definitely effects spool up. I ran 38* of timing which definitely isn’t helping spool up but where it needed to be down track so it just was what it was for spool up
@LoganbuiltRaceShop 38* Holly smokes that thing is crazy. I have a 215 pump with compounds 60 over 80 with ddp 100hp injectors. What timing would you recommend? Do you have a video on timing?
@@pittsmotorsports9806 I don’t have a video on timing. Wouldn’t be a bad idea though. I’d need to know the spray angle of the injectors, the line size & the piston bowl design to answer that better
@LoganbuiltRaceShop angel of injectors not sure, line size stock, piston is molly power piston big bolw.
@@pittsmotorsports9806 would definitely need to know the injector spray angle
Looks like a nice car.

How do you tell the difference between the band slipping and the torque converter allowing the engine RPM to raise without any real increase in speed?
@@hey_youtubeim_back2159 if you have the ability to lock the converter in 2nd you can do so and then increase the throttle input. If it revs up, the band is slipping. If you can’t lock the converter in 2nd it’s a little harder to tell but when it starts slipping bad enough it won’t go into 2nd until you lift off the throttle or it will start reving up in 2nd when load or throttle is applied
Question. I bought a 1999 ram 3500 automatic. 47re trans. About 6 months ago. 1 owner beautiful truck. Trans shifts amazing. Positive engagement of every gear. So long story short. Hooked gooseneck trailer to it. Going to get hay. Loaded 10 bales. That's about 12000 lbs and trailer is about 6 thousand. Ttuck wouldn't climb a hill. Like the clutch was slipping. 1 gear manual. Drive. Or reverse. OD on or off did all the same. Offloaded half the hay. And had no problems. So later that day I loaded my 3rd gen on the trailer and went for a drive. It does it in 1st 2nd and 3rd and reverse. But Overdrive and lockup no slipping. It drives normal. I'm very mechanically inclined. So I read up on the 47 re. And the only clutch pack that is locked during those gears is the overdrive direct. Could that 800 lb spring be weak and or the od direct clutches be worn and causing this problem?
I’m actually surprised to c the aluminum 4 pin planetary in a 1300hp rated trans I always thought around the 800hp in a racing application u should be looking to switch it out Curious to hear your thoughts of when the 4 pin aluminum is your weak point? Great video thanks Logan
@@davidbosch3779 like I said in the video I’ve never actually seen a 4 pinion rear planet fail but the general consensus is that above 1300hp you can be playing with fire. I have known of at least 1 guy who drag raced at 4600lbs with around 2000hp running 5.0s on an aluminum 4 pinion rear planet and never had a failure.
@@LoganbuiltRaceShop perfect this is great to know I am going to b putting a 2wd 47re together here shortly and I was all worried to b swapping out the aluminum 4 pinion on a 8-900hp build C great videos teaching us lots thanks for sharing Logan

I have a 2011 f150 with the 3.5L. I have a camper that weighs about 6500Lbs fully loaded and get up to 205F pretty regularly. What should I do? 6500lb for That truck really is only about half of It’s towing capacity and I’m good about not running the truck hard at all. Any advice would be great!!

That's funny. I live in Fairbanks. You see cardboard on front of vehicles. We also use oil pan heaters . On the engine and tranmission.

why 2 turns out and not 1-3/4 on the direct band back out?
recommendation for 24v turbo, stage 1 type upgrade hx35 for future upgrades to 400 hp + or -. preferably knockoff, for pulling or daily driving. or just go w stock hx35?
5.9 gass and 5.9 diesel have different transmissions
I'm new to the 48re and really have only a small amount of knowledge of how these Transmissions operate. I'm taking more of an interest in learning coming across your explanation of these pressure drops reminded me of years back when I had a small exposure to hydraulic systems that operate off of manifold systems. These big hydraulic setups would use nitrogen to pre-charge accumulators or storage tanks for backup hydraulic pressure. My thought is if you could use some sort of accumulator on these Transmissions to store hydraulic pressure. If this is possible that stored pressure and volume of transmission fluid could then be used to accommodate these pressure drops when the system requires multiple things to happen at once
is there a reason to not to have the low band apply in daily transmissions?
@@johnsmith-b7b it’s not necessary if youre not 4x4 launching above 1000hp in drive
👍 So could be implemented on a truck that sled pulls and sees street use. Is this necessary if you use a bolt in sprag?
@@johnsmith-b7b yes. This trans had a bolt in sprag and it still destroyed the cage of the sprag & the drum & OD position support
My case was so bad. The case was covered with what seemed like clay. I had to use a wire brush on a drill to clean it. The pressure washer did no good.
That's when you know you're a bad ass trans builder I'll be sending you a 47 or 48 soon. Greg A sold me
Ok I’m not a diesel guy but I am amazed at the power they lay down. This transmission has been in my mind for close to 25 years. When I first read about the ClutchHydro version using a GM Turbo 400. I’m currently starting a drag-n-drive build with my 55 Chevy. It will be a twin turbo 500 inch big block Chevy. The goal is dependable 13-1400 horsepower. Transmission plans have been standard 400 with a converter but the heat is a big concern. The shock from dumping the clutch on the line is a big concern so my question is… Can a slipper clutch be used in a turbo 400 kit like a winters kit? Anybody know?
@@todddaniel5642 I’m sure it couldn’t but unless you’re building this for just pure nostalgia there are so many better options nowadays. If you want a 400 leave a converter in front of it and roll on! If you want to leave on a slipped clutch like Finnegan then check out his channel and do a manual transmission like he runs

So is there a routing for the fluid to go to the low band in drive and you just use a regular valve body?
@@allenstyer205 all the mods are done in the valve body
If going with the 1.58 low gear in the 2 speed 400, would that make it feasible to use on a 500hp/700tq big block car @ 3200 lbs, on the street? If not, what low gear for it could I use? If the 400 isn't advisable, what a powerglide low gear would you recommend for this application? Oh, and what is the power consumption for each of these?

Great Stuff!!!!
Great video Logan
Thank you Logan for the video. How is applied regulated lock up different than regular lock up? Also would you recommend the reverse if I was converting a full manual valve body trans back to auto shift?
@@batteriesnotincluded9442 the apply regulated lock up allows us to keep lock up apply pressure at 180psi while being able to run main line pressure at what ever we chose to. This keeps the converter from ballooning from too much lock up apply pressure. If you’re converting a FMVB back to auto shift you can leave the rear servo set up from the full manual in it and it won’t cause any adverse effects
@@LoganbuiltRaceShop thank you Logan for the information. What about the direct springs should I change back to 9
@@batteriesnotincluded9442 you’re welcome. You can run it as is
Fkn awesome 👍🏼
So I recently installed a BD tap shift with the option for full manual tap. could you elaborate a bit more in the 9 to 12 springs and if you believe it to be good or bad? appreciate you videos and knowledge thanks.
@@crohnsn2446 I’m not extremely familiar with the bd tap shifter set up in detail but it’s just a full functioning VB that allows you the options of holding it in each gear essentially taking the ecm shifting out of the equation when you choose. Not the same mechanically as a FMVB with low band apply so you shouldn’t need to worry about anything I mentioned in this video
@@LoganbuiltRaceShop Thanks Logan I really appreciate your input on this. I have always had manual vehicles and never wanted auto but now I am switching it up and the info you put out helps a lot with shedding light into the "unknown unkowns" in the automatic transmission world. thank you sir.
