You can put the heavier thread into the bobbin, if it's a lot heavier you hand wind it use a jeans needle. Then the bottom becomes the top. I have some old Singer books that show how to do things like machine embroidering. You can find those old books very cheaply at thrift stores. Lots of fun ideas from the 70s.

It would have been cute to put a "patch" made out of that inspiration fabric. I love this project I use men's flannels shirts as light jackets around the house and during the spring and fall. I've found not only do men's shirt give me more room to layer the are thicker then women's. This gives me ideas what to do with the shirts to give them a more "girly" look, so I look a little less homeless lol
