Englogic - Logic Of English
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ก.พ. 2021
I am a CELTA-qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language, a language enthusiast and I love finding the mathematical and logical patterns of English in order to understand WHY we say what we say as there is always a reason. This allows us to control the language rather than the language controlling us.

‘IS SPELLING DIFFICULT ONLY IN ENGLISH?’ and ‘IS PRONUNCIATION HARD ONLY IN ENGLISH?’: these are my questions to you today. English is BLATANLY hard in this respect, it’s just there in your face, but other languages have subtleties that are often ignored ...

Can you tell me a little bit about the vowel /æ/? Is there any changes in the way people pronounce it? I'm an English learner. Recently, I noticed that that IPA notations for the word "cat" in The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary and The Oxford English Dictionary are different. 1. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED): British English /kat/; U.S. English /kæt/ 2. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD): British English /kæt/; U.S. English /kæt/ (Even when the IPA notations for British English and U.S. English are the same in this dictionary, I think that the example pronunciations sound different.) Thank you very much.
@@rainbowwatcher Hi, here is a video I made on this sound: th-cam.com/video/rbCH9y0RJvg/w-d-xo.html It all depends on the alphabet that individual dictionaries use. The sound is indeed pronounced differently in the two accents but some dictionaries use only /ae/ and expect you to know the difference
@@EnglogicSam Thank you so much for your detailed explanation
@@rainbowwatcher I'm glad it helped 😉

Restraining order. evasive(ı've)
Not only the intrusive r is ridiculous (using it where it does not exist), but it sounds horrible, uneducated and confusing. 'I sawr it' instead of I saw it. I mean, how more stupid than this can it get? Luckily, many educated British people discourage using this abomination. The South African non-rothic accent sounds most logical and the simplest as the final r is never pronounced even if the next word starts with a vowel, and I've noticed some south English people also ending words in schwa or A even if the vowel follows, so the ending R is never used.
Hi!! May I ask where you studied pronunciation/phonetics? Because you teach really interesting, nuanced stuff no one elses teaches
@@geekymonkey5294 Thanks for saying that 🤩 I did a couple of lessons with Pronunciation Studio here in London (I don't know if it still exists) and a couple of private lessons but I am mainly self-taught. Today, I came across one of your videos, and I was amazed by it. You explained all the details of the topic so clearly. While watching your latest video, I stumbled upon this one, which made me feel deeply sad. I think you're an excellent teacher, and one of the main reasons you don’t have more subscribers is due to TH-cam's algorithms to my mind. I’m also thinking about uploading videos like yours, but this video has really discouraged me. I think you should give it a second thought.
@@all-right144 Thank you so much for saying that! ❤️ If you really want to start a TH-cam channel, my advice is to do it: despite how mine ended, I'm really happy I gave it a go because I'd been meaning to for years. I only regret not stopping sooner, but you should definitely try, at least to get it out of your system, if nothing else 😉 I also realise that not many youtubers can survive solely on the revenue brought in by ads because it's fairly low. Most teachers use this as a platform to then promote their courses or lessons. I never wanted to do that and that's on me. Funnily enough, though, I've decided to give teaching another go and either this week or the next I'll upload a video where I give you all the details 😉 I've thought about coming back a lot of times but I just can't risk it because I MUST make money, so I wouldn't go back to posting videos like I used to. I'm seriously considering posting new videos but only on a membership basis, so people would have to pay a monthly subscription to access my content. I still need to see how my other channel and my new teaching go, but I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for the support and do let me know if you start your own channel!

What a riot, very well put. I enjoyed the part about tailoring your accent to whom you may be speaking. I grew up in the south of the USA and was ridiculed by friends in Boston about my accent. Little did they know their accents were as pronounced for their region of the country. They'd say; "you talk funny say something", I'd say "paak the caa in Haaavaad yaad."
@@binder098 Yes, it's funny how we tend to think that our own accent is softer than it is. I always knew I had the pronunciation traits of a northern accent in Italy (where I grew up), but it wasn't until a few years ago that I realised how strong my accent actually is and how clear it is to spot that I'm from the specific area that I'm from 😜
It's interesting how accents sound different but we (people without knowledge on linguistics) cannot tell exactly why they sound different. You make these differences clear. Thanks a lot!
