Cream the shortnening first! After it's warmed up and creamy, put your sugar in and STIR with spatula until the powdered sugar is incorporated so it won't FLY OUT everywhere. THEN go back to using the mixer and mix until creamy. I never use water - water and fat don't mix. They'll separate.
