Great video. Thank you. I've been playing drums and piano for a long time and have just recently started creating my own music. It's interesting because mastering music is very similar to editing audio in video, which is what I'm familiar with. Many video editing programs are starting to go "smart" with one-click "AI" audio options, and I see the appeal for beginners, but the quality is definitely better when you do it yourself.
Yeah - I’ve never been a fan of the one plugin solutions either with audio or video - I like to have control over what I am doing and know each move I make and how it affects things. So, which is your favorite video workflow/software?
@@GGabrielMusic I mostly use Final Cut for my personal stuff/TH-cam, but I also have DaVinci Resolve, and work jobs usually require Adobe. It's funny because I've owned Logic for years but never really did much music creation with it and just reinstalled it to edit my voiceovers. The plug-ins are almost identical to those in FCP, but I find it faster to cut up a long voiceover track in Logic than in FCP. The remove silence feature is amazing for taking the cut up clips and exporting them as individual audio files to match up to video. Unfortunately, the weather's gotten cold here, so I'm not making many videos right now and decided to give music creation another try, and that's when I discovered your channel. What is your A/V workflow? Your audio always sounds great.
I’ve used everything from Media Composer to DaVinci - I loved Final Cut 7 before Apple ruined it by trying to make it iMovie plus. They had a chance to really get into the professional market and opted to transform a pro program into an upsell from iMovie - they did the same thing to Logic but Logic’s dumbing down wasn’t nearly as tragic as what they did to FCP. Premiere pretty much replaced the slot that Apple would’ve taken had they not killed it. Those two were vying for 2nd place to Avid’s Media Composer. Premiere won that battle and now is used quite a bit in TV and Film production. I really don’t love Premiere though, it’s been around a long time and integrates relatively well with other Adobe products, but I don’t love its workflow. Then entered into the equation DaVinci - that is my current go to. I love most of the workflow and they’ve finally worked out some of the problematic areas. The color correction can’t be beat and I can edit really fast on it. As far as my audio, I record into OBS using my Neuman U87 into a Millennia STT-1 mic pre and then when I output my videos, I use a UAD silver compression to level things out. A bit overkill for an audio flow, but that’s my main mic and main preamp so why not! Thanks for getting back to me - hope to dialogue more here!
George, I have watched this video so many times and have gotten so much from it that I figured I'd better comment and say, "Thank you." I started binge-watching your videos and am learning so much. Thank you again and have a great new year!
So happy that you are getting something out of my videos. That is exactly why I am doing this - we all struggle with what is the best way to do things, trial and error, just workflow issues, etc. (myself included, but tens of thousands of hours later I've figured just a few things to improve my flow)... My goal here is to help beginners, intermediates, and even pros to improve their workflow so comments like yours make it all worthwhile! Thanks for taking the time to drop me a comment! Much more to come!! Cheers - and Happy New Year!! 🍾🎆
Amazing, thanks for the great tips, I definitely learned some new tricks !
My pleasure! Lots more of this sort of thing to come! Thanks for commenting!
hi thiks for Sharing, Merry Christmas !! I have a problem, when I bounce a song I see that my song, RIGHT headphone its low volume nd when I make bigger the audio on logic to check out, I see that the audio track, that the audio file on top its loud (bigger gain) nd the one down its low smaller, any tips ?
I'm not exactly sure what is going on. Are you saying that your bounce is coming out unbalanced? First I would look to see how your LED readout shows on your Stereo Out. That should show you if y7our levels are correct. If it is off balance there, then your bounce will also be off balance. Tell me step by step what is going on and I'll see if I can help.

Hello !!! My first time on ur channel. nice video !!! Thks for sharing, u are saving me a lot of time !!! I have a question, do you know if the QUALITY of the sound of any loop, (beats) bought from any online store will damage the sound, if we use them on the Drum machine Designer ? Cause usually many loops on sale cames mix already, do you think the de drum machine will damage the sound ?
Thanks for commenting! I don’t think any loops or audio files get damaged or lose quality, but it also depends on what kind of additional processing you may put on them. I think if you keep it clean, you’ll be good to go with now quality loss. Hope this helps!
@ Thks for the info my brother. Happy holidays 😎🎊🔥
logic assistance is the best
If you think so, go for it - the purpose of the video is to give you an option for you to have more control over. Thanks for the comment!
A question I've been having recently, and even more so after I watch this video, is what if you don't look at it like "one or the other"? I have a stereo out chain that I Iike, that includes a Channel EQ, a multipressor, a saturator, and an adaptive limiter. I've stayed away from Mastering Assistant, but recently I've been finding that attaching it to the very end of my chain has just given it a brighter, cleaner feel. Thoughts on using it as a "finisher" rather than a one-click hail mary? Thanks!
Thanks for the question - I think if it works for you, that’s what is best. For me, I like to know what’s going on in each parameter for each plug, which mastering assistant makes somewhat nebulous. But if you feel you’re getting a legitimately better sound, then absolutely use it as a finisher.
@@GGabrielMusic Interesting thoughts, thanks for the response! I've avoided it, but since the most recent update I've been tinkering. I find if I think of it as an EQ on steroids, then it adds a bit of sheen at the top, while my typical chain is doing the heavy lifting underneath. Thanks for the Multipressor trick too; using that instead of the typical Compressor has been a lifesaver!
Yeah - the Multipressor is pretty great for selectively honing areas to compress. Lots more to come - thanks for the dialog!!
Great series with great insight. A technical question, what advantage or disadvantage is there to simply making summing track stacks instead of the bussing technique you have set up in your template? I am assuming that you have been using this in Logic before track stacks were a thing.
Great question and great assumption, yes I’ve been using Logic since 1994. To me it boils down several factors: (1) the classic tried and true and still practiced workflow used in recording studios that most professionals cut their records on is an organized workflow based on a mixing board with busses that collect like-kind sounds for pre-mastering processing and aux’s for effecting channels. Great mixers work on boards that have a static workflow and thus can achieve the same desired results time and time again because they are working in a structured environment and the workflow is second nature because it is relies on a static structure which provides for faster consistent workflow. So, the classic way is a mindset of organization. The summing stack while accomplishing a similar result, is a bit clumsier as packing tracks in a sum can slow down the workflow process several ways (a) Can be cumbersome in expanding and contracting summing tracks for performance operations (b) while building a song, if you use summing you have to add subsequent like-kind tracks to that sum along the way, so you have to create that structure on the fly (c) selecting a sum plays all the tracks in that sum which may not be the desired result. Therefore, in my opinion these slow down the workflow process. The next factor (2) is that Logic uses an Aux for the summing track - while technically an Aux and a Bus function the same way in Logic (they are both alternate audio pathways), the traditional view of an Aux is an alternate audio pathway generally used for FX sends. Logic’s Summing Stack’s intent is to function as a mix subgroup, which is traditionally a Bus. In establishing a good workflow, in the Mixer window, you can separate Busses and Aux’s - so with Logic using an Aux to create the mix subgroup convolutes that separation. My workflow and view of tracks, aux’s and busses is exactly the same in every composition that I create, whether it is 3 tracks or 120 tracks. This allows me to get around much quicker and accomplish a consistent end result every time without having to look for where things are. I can open a session from 7 years ago, and the workflow is exactly the same, I don’t have to reverse engineer anything (I will likely have to replace a bunch of outdated plugins though!) My intention is to help people create a consistent, time-saving workflow in creating these videos. Of course, whatever workflow works for you is what you should do, but if I can help improve that in any way, that achieves my goal in creating this channel Hope this answers your question. Thanks so much for commenting - would love to hear your thoughts on this!
@@GGabrielMusic Thanks so much for all you do to help us. I have been in the music industry for over 40 years as a woodwind player but have recently been writing cue music for a library company since 2018. Love this new direction in my career at 64. Hope to do it into my 80s. I like your industry standard concept but I started this path kinda serendipitously and my self taught habits although fairly successful in results (i.e. making money) are hard to break for this old dog. My new years resolution is to incorporate your more organized approach. Thanks again
My pleasure! Look forward to more conversations!

Thank you very much for those videos on autoload. I'm actually working on my template, listening to your part 6, and it's amazing how much I've learned things I didn't even know existed. Working with the "environment" as you show us is simply fantastic !
So happy to help!! To get a more thorough explanation of how it is used, watch the 'T.A.B.S.' videos and then my new series 'Pro Tracks using Stock Logic Sounds and Plugs' will show you it in action. Thanks so much for commenting! Much more to come!
Awesome series George! I've just recently recreated my autoload, so it's great to see your workflow/process using it. It's clarifying the TABS workflow for me. Even though I have heaps of 3rd party plugins, I'm also enjoying seeing what can be done with stock Logic ones. I haven't really looked into Alchemy or the Sampler much. That might be about to change!
Great to hear from you again Monique! I’m glad you’re enjoying this series. Really for me it boils down to treating each sound like a color and painting the sounds to work together to create something that feels realistic. You’d probably be shocked at how many ‘old sounds’ from the early sampling days I still use because they sonically can work together if used correctly to create that realistic sound that tricks the listeners ears into believing that they are hearing the real thing. (Or at least something that sounds professionally done) Lots more to come - I was a little awol from here as I moved across the country, but now that I am somewhat settled, I have a lot planned for this channel. Keep in touch!
Is there a key command to select 1/2 note; 1/4 note; etc in Logic 11's SCORE EDITOR?
Please clarify this - not sure what you mean by 'select' - looking at the assignments in the Key Commands, for 'Score' there are only 5 options for 'select' - none of which are notes
@@GGabrielMusic Call off the dogs....I got it! Best...
Glad I clicked on this. You just saved me from many frustrating hours of trying to do something I know nothing about... STRINGS! Knowing that I can get this patch, and "reverse engineer " when I have more time, is priceless. New subscriber and customer. Thank you!

my buses disappeared in the mixer window
If your busses disappeared, you just need to reselect them in the upper left hand corner of the mix window. I would first choose all then deselect every other type than bus. Hope this helps!
I always use this and if I remember I didn't set it up. The shortcut is shift+R.
Yeah - it's a game changer!!
Thanks 👍

Awesome video man! I'll save it to my playlist so I can rewatch it and start using Logic more to create music next summer holidays!!! 🤘🤘🤘

@ the audio memory is strong. Brother from another mother?
Ayy, thanks a lot!!!
You are most welcome! Glad I could help!!
How about a MIDI region?
I wish!! That is something I've been thinking about for years, being able to draw fades with the fade tool on midi. You can do it with automation (that is the level) but it is more cumbersome and you can also fake it with automation using pitch bend, but that is a stretch at best. My best advice if you want to do that with midi (kinda) is to bounce your midi tracks in place and add them back as audio. Anyway - hope this helps!!
Bro this was crazy!! Thank you!! 🔥🔥🔥
My pleasure! Coming very soon is a new series of videos making professional tracks from start to finish using only stock Logic sounds and plugins, so stay tuned for that! Thanks for commenting!!
Thanks for these great tutorials. Ok, so I did all of the changes in these tutorials. Having never worked on an analog system I am really struggling to see how the routing flow is. I'm so used to just leaving the tracks to stereo out, especially looking at all the other tutorials on youtube explaining busses. None of them change the out of each channel to a bus. Forgive my ignorance. I know this is going to work great, but I just need to see it in action, explaining the flow. I would so much appreciate another video taking all of this and seeing a real world example of using effects and how to route everything. I'm just an amateur but I have been on logic for a long time. I just need to see it in action. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment! Here is a video I did on bussing where you can see this in action: th-cam.com/video/dHH5Zti1hGE/w-d-xo.html Let me know if this helps!
Doesn’t explain the values he’s changing 11:45
Hey - thanks for pointing this out. I need to do a more extensive video on exactly how to tweak each parameter and what each parameter does. Thanks for the comment - I'll add this to the list!
Hey, that was really interesting!
Thanks Dave!!
Awesome story man! Inspiring🤘🤘🤘
Thanks! Great to see you here!
Killer story! Nice job, George...fun to hear that history and how it worked out!
Thanks for watching!!
Great info, thank you! Could you do a single mic or does this tuning work best with a stereo pair?
If you have a stereo pair, I would make sure they are at a 90 degree angle, but this technique is really to identify the problem frequencies in your room, so a single mic can do that. Thanks for commenting! Much more to come!
Hi George, I have some questions about the video, once you have the track complete, did you balance the levels track by track before bussing? , do you use EQ to clean tracks of non desired frequencies? , and what about stereo panning ?, the TABS mixing flow is amazing, in the video, with only compression the mix sounds very loud and clear!. Thank you so much for these videos👍👍
To answer your question, along the way I am balancing the tracks to work with the other instruments using the same bus. Then I balance the busses to work with each other in the mix. Yes, I definitely use EQ to minus undesirable frequencies. I pan on the track level (not the bus level) and yes, panning is key for separation. I'm so glad this is working for you - please feel free to ask any questions on this so I can help improve your workflow. All the best!!
This is a great video! It would be great if you could somehow upload a template with all of this already set up... I would love to use it for my next project!
Yes - I am working on that right now. Please come back soon as I will have an avenue for that very soon.
Template available now! Check out the video for the link.
Based on how sibilant your mic for this video is, I can't trust your advice on anything.
Well alright then - you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I don't equate my podcast mic dynamics to my nearly 30 years of experience creating music that hundreds of millions of people have heard. Perhaps you can move past the sibilance of the mic and actually listen to what I am presenting in the content and then comment. I'd love for you to do that and come back to me for a dialog. Thanks for commenting!
@@GGabrielMusic And you're welcome to keep piercing listeners ears because you can't hear that any more
Will do!
George! Good to see you man. Yeah, DMD should be called Barbie's Bashin Box or something. I did a deep dive on it a couple years ago. Blech. I noticed the same garbage on the channel strips. Noticed the same huge number of channel strips totally unnecessary. Who's nephew at Apple went to their uncle and said "now every sound needs a colored gif, a doily for the snare drum. Can we make the high hat lavender? Ooooo, I love lavender!" smh. After getting all the junk off of the channel strips I made about 10 kits from the huge amount of fluff apple gives you. Then I tested it out sonically and using samples imported. Blech again x1000. When you drag and drop samples onto it or import a whole kit of samples, DMD cuts the volume of all your samples in half. wtf. And the endless list of bad sounding samples THEY want you to use keeps popping up everywhere. Yikes. Last thing, the tone of it is just awful. DMD found a way to even make MPC samples sound bad. And that's pretty hard to do. Anyway keep up the good work man!
Rob! It is always good to see you and chat. I have been a little AWOL because I moved across country and just getting back into it on high speed. Your commentary is hilarious! Always an entertaining discussion with your insights on reality. I'll be back with tons more stuff in the coming weeks. Look forward to more 'how it really is' dialog with you in the near future!! Cheers my friend!
Great video! They don’t sound “real” maybe but they no longer sound distractingly fake.
HAHA! Yeah, that is the point I think, we are all sound designers of sorts and the more we can design ok samples to sound more real, then that separates us from the average joe just dialing up what Logic gives you stock. Thanks for commenting!
When I select an area with the marquee tool, it doesn't refocus my cycle. When I press play it only plays once the selected area, but I find it useful that way.

Amazing! I love it when it all comes together. Thanks for commenting!
Bro, you’re just mad that you’re going to be out of a job. You clearly don’t know how to use the plug-in. As a self taught amateur musician, my mixes have been taken to the next level with mastering assistant. I have song’s i wrote and recorded using a cheap $100 Boss mini guitar amp and a directional mic, that sound better than professionally produced song in that style, if mastering Assistant is doing for me I’m cool with it
Thanks for commenting! Nah, I won't be out of a job, I know how to use the plugin and I have no doubt this improved your mixes taking them to the next level as an amateur. That said, when you look to recording from a holistic perspective using the tried and true techniques that all of the major records are using today (from recording to mixing and mastering), and getting a hold of those techniques, you can take yourself out of the amateur standing to a whole other level. Keep commenting and watching!
thank you

Hey, I'm a Logic user since before Apple bought the German company Emagic (remember? “Emagic Logic Audio Platinum”) When it comes to mix enhancement, that is, mastering, I use external equipment, not plugins. I agree with this video. I don't think that a really laborious task like the mastering process can be solved in a moment by inserting an “assistant” or a wizard. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.
Thanks for commenting! Yes, I remember good ‘ol Emagic - I started using Logic in 1994 when they had a serial dongle to use it. I too used to use external equipment to master, but since I work in TV, I had too many mixes that I had to recall and had to start taking pictures of my gear to get back to what it was on that mix. I was using a Manley Massive Passive EQ and an SSL G-Series compressor - when UAD came out with those plugs, I ditched the real gear for the plugs. I will say, even though the plugs are great, nothing compares to real gear. I appreciate you weighing in! Come back for more. I will launch a much greater effort in the coming months as I have just moved and I am setting up my new studio, so stay tuned!! Thanks!!
A tutorial on mixing and mastering a full rap song would be amazing !! Your videos are very helpful 💪
