Julian Jaynes' Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind: A Review

In this short summary of Julian Jaynes' book, I'm helping myself better understand this fascination idea by saying it out loud. I heard of this book in a discussion between Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Dr. Iain McGilchrist. It blew my mind and may be a new direction I head in my reading journey adjacent to JBP's book list. Here is my overly lengthy written review of these ideas: tommyt23.substack...

Hey guys, this is a review of ideas in Iain McGilchrist's book, The Master and HIs Emissary. We look at the creation of early work on hemispheric difference and bust previous myths with new research. I review two paintings that helped me visualize then understand the concepts he puts forth along with some quotes from his book to help you understand his thesis.

It’s a Romanian name ❤
Mircea Eliade is considered culturally significant in modern and contemporary Romania. Internationally, he is mostly known for his pioneering work in the history of religions; in his country of origin he is usually reached at through his works of fiction many of which are still part of the curriculum for Romanian literature studied in public schools.
Alternative, more grounded explanation is that the themes are similar because there is a common, relatively recent origin for all people groups. The collective unconscious is evolutionary special pleading, like biological convergent evolution is special pleading, both directly contradicting the central premise that similarities only occur by decent with modification. Like the snake eating its tail, this system of thought requires circular contradiction to imitate a perpetual system. The snake dies in fairly short order
Also, this is a very thorough and well-made video. Thank you!
So crazy I just watched a video on white blood cells and had this question so I thought I’d search it and this is the only video I found on this topic. Crazy that you only posted in a month ago. I guess everything is connected. 💜✌🏽😌
@@Linznicole6 hi! Thanks for your kind words. You had this question? You were asking yourself if WBCs are conscious? Wild connection for sure 😁
Why do we assume there was no consciousness?????
I’m defining consciousness as a sense of self, an “I” that exists in a mind space which can narratize & abstract our behavior and the world in general. A review of language (writing) shows little if any use of words for introspection before 2,000 BCE. It’s not until an expansion of our use of metaphoric language and the written word that we see the use of words describing a mental space in our heads that describes our common sense of self. There was no introspection. Even in common times, children who do not learn language show the same lack of introspection. Helen Keller, who didn’t learn language until the age of ten, is a good example of this. She describes her mental state before learning language as not being conscious of self nor time.
Thomas, your final words got me to thinking about how “religious” ideas manifest in the modern world in secular dimensions like politics and science. Political groups have ideas and platforms that must be adhered to by members (=doctrines, creeds) and they have end goals in mind (=eschatology). When I read Marx, he sounds like an apocalyptic prophet looking for the dawn of a new age, yet God is missing from the agenda. Science also has its axioms and beliefs that must be approved if you want to be a part of the academy. Scientists that reject evolution, for instance, are “excommunicated” and not published or granted positions in universities. The scientific credo must be endorsed if a scholar wants to play the game. Although, of course, traditional religion is still with us, the religious ideas still seem to surface even in the “profane” realm: humans appear to be wired for a religious impulse.
Absolutely. I’ve thought about that a lot. For science, it seems to be a faith in the idea that truth is redemptive and there are universal rules. So far, that seems like faith correctly placed, but we have no way to know those things are facts yet.
I read this book (just volume 1) in my program at Drew University in the 1980s in a course on ancient Near Eastern religion. I have been thinking about revisiting it lately. Thanks for the needed encouragement to approach the task!
Floyd, did you start this task yet? How's it going?
Romanian name and the correct name is simply "History of religions"
Recently found that out. Thanks!
Very interesting Thomas, thanks for the useful synopsis! It was interesting to me to compare this theory to The Bock Saga, which I've been enjoying listening to. The best ones are from Ior Bock himself, like the ones recorded at HumanUniversity I'd be interested to hear what you think of it
Heck ya GET SOME! Great short video on your matters of the mind!

Equating hazing and rites of passage was a detriment to society.
Depends on what you call hazing. One of my proudest moments was getting several knees to my thigh to get my blood stripe even though I wasn’t a marine. Did it hurt? Yep. I was limping all the way back to our outpost. But I knew for sure that the men around me thought of me as one of their own.

Impressive and very nice commentary. Thank you. These books are on my radar. So much to read. @@nueythepyasuwan thanks! I feel the same about having so many books to read. And sometimes, by accident, you surprisingly come across something that you can’t put down. I’m doing that now with the Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes - mind blown

Good choice!
I just read Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. I think he provides great exposure to the different functions and disorders of the brain. A perfect read for anyone interested in neuro-psych. Anyways, good review(although I only watched part of it), Ill have to add The Master and his Emissary to my list!

A very eye opening read, however I wish I read _Origins and History of Consciousness_ first. Anyways, you seem to have a pretty firm grip on the concepts explored in the book; kudos!
Thanks for your comment! I've often thought about which books I own that I would take while running out of my house during a fire. Erich Neumann is at the top of the list for sure. Maps of Meaning is another one up there that I would love to reread, but there are so many books to read I have yet to get to.

Patriarchy is a natural extension of a matriarchy, where one can not exist without the other as each follows the other throughout the course of all eternity. Spiritually speaking (gender and race aside), matriarchy can begin with an understanding of the cyclical nature of reality (God). Represented by the snake in many creation myths, the living cycle has a trinity of a beginning (head), a middle and end (tail). As above so below, the sexes were created in the image of God's cyclical nature where Mother is the head and opening to all beginnings and Father holds the tail to all endings (through which the sowing of seeds allow for the next great matriarchal rebirth). The joining of the two (symbolized by the Ouroborus or the marriage ring) is the sacred union needed in assuring the creation and continuation of new life cycles. To speak of the present day God as "Our Father" is simply an admission to our collective positioning within the bigger cycle. As all mothers have direct experience with the creator quality of birthing, so is the direct experience of rebirthing the divinity within (baptism) belong to that which is spiritually matriarchal. (John 3, verse 3-8). Sekhmet statues (ancient Egyptian) carry most of their weight in symbolic memory of what was a mother culture dedicated to the direct experience of baptism. As the leg shaped hairlocks extend from maternal breasts to the womb of rebirth, the lioness's head proportions are such that they highlight the bust of a second animal figure. The Lioness's ears as eyes and eyes as nose (nostrils) brings to life the figure of a reptile. 'Neath the halo headress of the solar egg, the lioness's egg fertilization process being internal (Set) and the reptile's egg fertilization process being external (Setting), such being key components to the safety of entering the trans-egoic or "born again" state. The life threatening fear associated with the predatory nature of a lion and/or crocodile encounter are reflective of the intense ego death experiences associated with the transpersonal awakening process. In spiritually matriarchal times, illumination could be seen as wearing the false beard (ancient Egyptian funerary "ego" death mask) as the high state of cyclical self knowing; high awareness of both our upper matriarchal half and our lower (later) patriarchal half (compared with a mini lower body replica, an "as above so below" tail end beard extension); in full recognition of her civilizational Underworld; her inevitable cyclical destiny. The male pharaoh wears his beard tapered in reverse, indicating a pointing upwards towards the patriarchal head, divine representative of God's tail end cycle. Mary's anointing and wiping of Jesus's feet with her hair can then be seen as "Head to tail" (toe) imagery as she descends her matriarchal head to his patriarchal feet, thus reenacting the high understanding of the divine cyclical process. (John 12, verse 3) To carry the Ankh (now the female symbol ♀️) was perhaps to symbolically carry that upper and lower understanding. As the upper matriarchal womb symbolised the fertile birthing of civilization, below, the now Christian cross is carried to place emphasis on the lower (later) "End Times" Father principle of the great cycle. Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed Hindu diety, displays a cyclical head to trunk symbolism and points to the Mother head of his matriarchal elephant society. Ganesha (like the elephant) wears God's cyclical nature on his face. A whole temple was dedicated to Hathor (ancient Egyptian diety), who is the matriarchal "Uterus" personified. th-cam.com/video/J0m0zJSEFK0/w-d-xo.html "See all women as mothers, serve them as your mother. when you see the entire world as the mother, the ego falls away. See everything as Mother and you will know God." - Neem Karoli Baba "My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother." - Proverbs 6 : 20
Important stuff. I like your connections to different ideas. The part about weakness vs. Strength and be like water reminded me of the work of Nassim Taleb. He is an economist and his message is essentially that an economic mechanism cannot sustainably stay strong and make money always. He says your should be willing to lose money consistantly, and THEN to win in one important period. So according to him it is important to embrace being weak in areas you can be. It is more than that but generally. Thank you
Thanks so much for watching and your reply. Yeah, that was one of my favorite ideas from the book. It's also applicable to the book I mentioned in the intro that I'm reading now: The Master and His Emissary. A lot of brain form and function and how it relates to the world we've created.

I think Newtons third law applies here, like so many other things socially speaking in this country and the wider world. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". Apart from Newtons 3rd law, the Bible is clear. You reap what you sow. This may take one hour, day, month or ones own life time to see come about. Blowback is another term that many will be familiar with. I heard the writer today on the Charlie Kirk show and I was impressed with his ability to put into words what this whole matter is about. But it has roots and it's not CRT. Like the man said, CRT is the key lock. Lets continue. The breaking down of the American mind is old news and started with communism in America. The Left fostered feminism across the board in the 60s-70s. That was the road to destroying the American masculine male and replacing him with Beta males, subservient to them...the left also launched a anti truth campaign through promoting the "idea" that your truth is subjective and only true to you while someone else's truth was entirely something else. No judging here, but these are the facts of the chronology of this entire disaster. I have been long awaiting to see how this would effect the gay community and others who rode somewhat on the coat tails of others to champion their own cause. Now you see it is not looking so good, this queer thing, which many see as a gay recruitment tool and it appears to be working very well. Look up we are coming for your children video. They make no excuses and confirm that is the agenda. My personal stance has always been, you do what you do and I'll do what I do, just do not force your agenda on me or mine. You see, they are forcing an agenda, sick, evil and twisted onto children and this is unforgiveable. May the Lord Jesus have mercy on those who cause harm to children in any form or fashion. Husband of 40 years (male-female-mixed race), father of 3 (mixed race), grandfather of 4. I have a voice too. Peace to you all.
The Motte and Bailey tactic is extremely effective.
Absolutely! You have to call it out every time.

5:45 this is the first video ive seen on this book and this past month I've found a rabbit hole that connects my scientific education to spiritual philosophy when i was trying to figure out how psychedelics truly work. In a way a lack of imagination, creativity and faith on each other truly separates and hides possible turth right in front of you. I don't just have a "different world view" but a different philosophy of reality at the moment that i can almost explain everything with math and spirituality. The yin yang symbol is a key symbol that has helped solidify my ideas, but there is a third part not shown (maybe on purpose?) in the yin yang symbol. Its a riddle in symbol/picture form of reality. It took me 2 weeks to organize/grow my ideas to get to this point but a simple explanation is reality creates itself through the power of imagination and laws of attraction. Connection is the key to combining nothingness and somethingness... You actually are explaining some of my own thoughts as I type... Consciousness is almost the evolution of the universe/god sensing itself and in a way the universe created itself or an insensible/imaginary master of physics/science (math... A lot of my ideas come back to proving simulation by the singularity, but the singularity saved itself with choas and randomness but eventually learned to control it to take the shape of physical reality). Controlling randomness/imagination (choas control) is key to life/conscience... New life solves infinity in the simulation of life. The human race against time and death. Conscience is almost like mathematical nirvana contained with the ability?/curse? of free will. Depends on your point of view "i think therefore i am"
Thank you for not editing this video and having a raw uncut explanation of the book. It's how I'm able to really expand on my own and other ideas without skipping needed details to paint the picture/puzzle
