Jeremy, thank you for your insight and personal opinion. I myself have no tattoos and will never place one on the body God gave me. I do not look down at a person who has decided to get a tattoo, but my convictions as a Christian are to acknowledge the Lord in every way. I do not parse the Bible to create a narrative to fit my actions. I place my unwavering faith in the words of the Heavenly Father, and of scripture. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 To every individual that tries to justify that Leviticus 19:28 is being misinterpreted or not the word of the Lord, in my humble opinion is leaning on their own understanding. To do this for one topic, suggests that “WE” can dissect and interpret God’s words when it suits our stance on an issue. Peace be with you, and God bless

Welcome to the commonplace world! I've been keeping one for years, but I end up changing the format every new notebook I get. I started off keeping a bullet journal and commonplace book together, grouping commonplaces from one book together. That got frustrating because I would be behind on commonplacing and not know how many pages to save for each book before moving on to the next one (which I was already reading), or having the quotes from each book split up if I just used the next page. Then I decided to just mix up quotes from everything all together, no real structure. I kind of liked this a lot because it's a good look into what I was reading/thinking about at that time. I still like thumbing through those books. But it is really difficult/time-consuming to find any specific quote that I remember writing down. That said, sometimes I think the friction of looking for something is helpful and leads to serendipity as you see other quotes you were reading at the same time. This may be my overall favorite way. Currently I have a dedicated commonplace book, a decently nice one with a faux-leather cover, that I have organized by topic. I did this under the influence of the school I teach at, which has students organize their commonplace books by topic, and by being convinced of the value of actually giving quotes an actual "common place" to go back to in order to find things related to what you're writing/thinking about. I do find this very helpful when trying to FIND quotes I know I took, but I miss the serendipity/unexpected connections of the purely chronological method. I generally use A5 books - I have used Moleskines, Leuchtterms, Rhodia (my current fave). I've ALSO gotten into fountain pens, so I'm trying out some other fountain-pen friendly notebooks/paper now. I just got a cover kind of like yours but not leather that holds three thin A5 notebooks, and I'm enjoying that a lot. I'm also using Obsidian on the computer for notetaking, so I think my ultimate workflow might be a non-structured physical commonplace book that gets periodically transferred and organized digitally.

@@PastorJeremyCollins the cutting in the flesh is a sin. Idol worship is a sin. printing marks like tattoos is a sin as well because when you look at those words in the Hebrew it has something to do with destroying your skin and you know your body is your temple. I'm kind of shocked that you're advocating for people to sin getting tattoos depending on what they're getting. God doesn't care what our meaning is. I am an avid commonplace book creator. I started about 14 years ago and it was originally a collection of quotes and thoughts and religious minutiae. During the intervening years I have changed significantly and also spent much more time writing in these books. Being a bit OCD I have certain books for certain things: All are A6 size (or so) - Moleskine squared for quotes I have personally heard from speakers at church (on my 4th now) around 4000 quotes so far, Rhodia bullet for my direct scripture recordings and artwork. I fell in love with illuminated manuscripts many years ago and have over the last almost 7 years started copying the scriptures word-for-word with various lousy artwork thrown in. My goal is to complete scriptures 4 times so each of my children will have a handwritten set from me, when I eventually pass on. I use the Leuchterm 1917 bullet point for scriptural commentary. And finally I have a Rhodia blank for my carry everywhere to collect my thoughts at any given time so I can peruse them later or research them etc... Some of these go into my commentaries, but most of the time they are simply an interesting way to keep track of those things i used to wonder about but then forgot before i could actually do anything with. I look forward to future videos from you. If I were to only every pick on notebook it would be the Rhodia. They are the highest quality in my opinion. And all of them are hardbacks. For economic reasons I am switching to A5 size and using other brands on my next trip through the Bible. for the A6 sizes I have never found any economically priced notebooks that compete with Rhodia, Leuchterm or Moleskine. But I have come across several off-brand A5 sizes that compete quite well and often for 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

@@johnpsmith19 wow that’s amazing. Love the idea of a hand written copy of scripture that’s illustrated. That’s super interesting. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your process. As a 14 year veteran any specific thing you would do differently looking back on this journey?

@PastorJeremyCollins I had pre-conceived ideas of how a commonplace book should look and since mine did not rise to that level, I would get discouraged and write less. As I learned the meditative value and the ability of daily notes to help me coherently crystallize my thoughts I was able to let go of what I thought they should look like and then let them be what I needed them to be for me. So I would recommend to not worry about what they look like and just let them evolve. Secondly, I would not overcomplicate them. My first set of scriptures started off with a riot of colors to indicate what group each person speaking belonged to (righteous, neutral, unrighteous) other colors for prayers, another for commandments, different colors to indicate the level of divinity (creator, angels, man, demons etc...) and while it was pretty I got more focused on the colors than the message. Thus I now decorate the borders and planned open areas on pages after I complete a notebook. My next set I am going to incorporate pressed flowers, small plants etc... Finally, don't compare. Yours are yours and mine are mine. They literally only hold the value of what it brings to our being, our mental and spiritual health.

Trying to journal more. But key for me was to learn (and am learnig) how to say no to good things, so I can say yes and be fully present to better things.

What has helped you most in that learning process? Because I agree often times they aren't bad things that get in the way.

@@PastorJeremyCollins First is admitting I can't do it all. Ask the question, will this impact something i am already committed too. I also can care but can't own someone else's disappointment of me saying no. (Very hard for us pastors) Another is to measure everything against core values, mission and vision. I am far from perfect from living this out.

I've stopped getting on social media pretty much all together, hence why you haven't seen me. I've started fishing and golfing more and getting out and about.

Running for council, that’s awesome. Things have been good, summer is over and we are back to a normal rhythm. Been switching things up on the channel, deleted a lot of videos, really not interested in what ‘works’ on TH-cam right now, going to just make videos I hope help and encourage people.

It’s the ESV Preaching Bible, Verse by Verse Edition. It’s my favorite Bible by far. Perfect for taking notes in the margin.

From one Pastor to another, I've been writing and keeping a commonplace notebook since becoming a Christian in 2008. I love to read about my old thoughts and journey.

@@PastorJeremyCollins Yes, most certainly, From the moment I began my journey with Christ I started writing down everything I learned from Bible studies, preachers, my own prayers, and thoughts. Going back to my writings when I committed to pastoral ministry I began to see things god was doing in my life and how years later prayers were answered. I still continue to write not only in my commonplace notes but for pastoral articles, blogs, and other academics and my thoughts and writings in my commonplace notebooks have helped in those as well. I still to this day have a daily quiet time to write and reflect on my thoughts and readings. I have a rather large library and I read a lot not only as a bible professor but for my own enjoyment.
