Gabion Basket Retaining Wall! Part 2: Building the basket wall and filling it
How long did it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings? Did it take longer when it hadn't been used for several days?
Is it really wise to add 75 tons of rock onto the edge of a precipice that's already crumbling away. You need another row of gabions below that row - then another - then another...................
A prisond stone(
I counted 3 violations. 1) the back area needs to be fenced around the utilities, 2) it's not wheelchair accessable, 3) it's lacking a concrete path. That's far from "finished". You'd fail inspection.
Said the garden room is finished. Not the landscaping... porcelain Path is going in within the next few weeks and will be wheelchair accessible. And utilities don't need fencing off. Nothing is accessible without tools and no fingers can get into the unit. 👌
How did these baskets hold up in a stream to use as a retaining wall with water hitting on it as it flows through a curve
They are guaranteed by the supplier for 15 years in water with the galfan coating but have been told they usually last alot longer.
Great video mate. Have done mine before but thought I just have a check from down here in New Zealand
You work fast, I guess I would to,if I had to listen to that music
Very usefull. Thank's.
good job and well done on top gravel to give a nice finish. true professional and thanks for tips
looks like fuel cutoff is acting up
I really love the wall .Great job . Thank you 😊
Weld you some Re-rod across your ramps to get some grip....
He hasn't a clue did you see how nervous he was what was all the bucket about. I've got the same ranks you just took the bucket into the digger line up and drive straight up. I wouldn't want him digging my drive ha ha
Beautiful dry stack inside your baskets. Really pretty.
Fantastic work. Can i ask what size the baskets used were please
Respect your driving & courage going up that hill.
Not the worst we have done but wasn't easy. Always the potential to need a change of trousers 🤣 thankfully all went well. Thanks for the message
how many mm is the steel in the baskets?? what guage is it?
I believe it was 4mil as 3 mil just doesn't hold up.
Thanks! Awesome video! You showed you could do it by yourself. very inspiring!
Don't mind doing small concrete pads alone mixing myself but when I tried a 10x4m pad alone I now use a ready mix for anything over 2m³. Thanks for the comment. 👌
Shitty video
Can’t see what your doing?
I’m not seeing a hard hat bro! The man in the trench needs one on.
😂 You try making him wear one. Yes I know he needs one but I don't know many yorkshire men who will unless on a commercial site 😂 this was domestic and he was provided one but left it on the side over his tea to stop muck falling in. 😂 The true test of a yorkshire man and his tea
Please post more of your gabion work. Love it.
I'm trying to get more gabion videos but at the moment cost of the baskets are through the roof so lots of customers are going for engineered walls instead. Hopefully the videos will start flowing soon
How deep did you have to dig before you laid the first basket down??
All depends on soil type I usually try to get down to clay and then dig a further 6-8 inches down for the hardcore but depends on wall height and ground conditions.
I've enjoyed the series but would it be possible to show more of the digger and dumper working on future projects, maybe a tripod would help for the camera work. Nice hand pitching of the facing stone and fill for the gabions 👍
Hi Bob. We do have some other videos with some digger work. And hopefully some future videos will have lots more included.
4:00 good tip, about back-fill rubble : don't just tip it in. I intend to put my rubble in (as you did) like building a dry-stone wall.
Wjy good morning TH-cam. 😂😂
Getting stuck in like it
good job
late start
Hi There. What’s the safest height you would recommend building a gabion that is 1 meter wide. Thanks.
You could go by rule of thumb which is however high the wall it needs to be 1/3 thick at the base so 1m wide would be 3 meters high with a 6° lean back on the wall. Otherwise you would need a structural engineer to do a plan for you
That stone is perfect walling stone. I don't understand why you didn't just use it to build a nice wall. Would have been much nicer and there wouldn't have been any cost for the baskets.
We only had enough stone for the face of the baskets. Also the entrance behind the wall is used for farm machinery and equipment meaning a drystone wall wasn't an option. Therefore baskets are the best option for low cost
@@wadsworthlandscaping4098 okay but if there was enough stone to face the baskets you would have had enough to face a wall the same size. The wall wouldn't have to be a dry stobe wall. It could have been a block wall faced with stone and laid with either cement or lime mortar. Anyway, it was the property owners choice I suppose but it seems weird to me.
@@davidwebb2318 a block wall would have been alot more expensive as you need concrete foundation then at 2 meters you would need a structural engineer to design the wall and then would need to be build where gabion are so much faster and easier.
@@wadsworthlandscaping4098 The foundation wouldn't ben very much and nobody would bother a structural engineer with a job like this. I gues the gabion basket solution is cheaper though. Just doesn't look so nice as a proper wall.
What keeps the baskets from rusting and collapsing...
Eventually everything rots but they are Coated in galfan which is like galvanising but it lasts 3 times longer so if I remember rightly they say 45 years life span in water (I.e river bed retaining wall). So will last alot longer on land as long as the coating isn't damaged
My boss keeps telling me to wear a hard hat when I’m working below anything that could my skull, plus he almost fired me for positioning myself, face down, directly below a piece of heavy equipment while it’s being operated, for ✌🏾sAfTY ReaSoNS✌🏾. He’s such an idiot. When a bobcat falls onto from six feet above just walk it off, sissy!
In hindsight we shouldn't have been working this way but the digger bucket never actually goes over his head it is always over half a meter away but still not the safest. But we wanted to get the job done but still no excuse 🤔🤣
Great video
This is impressive, thank you. Do you have any suggestions as to how to protect yourself and others from the ends of the screw wire ends? I need to be able to take them out so didn’t want to turn the ends over. Any ideas would be appreciated.
I believe that you can buy rubber end caps that will slot over the wire. Not designed for gabion but have seen them used on pavement side walls to stop snagging. Or alternatively heat shrink for electrical wiring
@@wadsworthlandscaping4098 The heat shrink for wiring is a brilliant idea, thank you so much. Funnily enough I thought soldering might work so I watched a TH-cam video earlier today about soldering and the chap put a small tube over the wires but I hadn’t thought of it for my issue. I will try it. Thank you for sharing your skill!
The heat shrink tubes worked brilliantly, many thanks!!!
Very good video. You have a very pleasant voice.
Hello there, I have question about the gabion retaining walls you build. Do you ever use concrete foundation? I am planning to build 2 walls 1st: 1meter wide 2.5 high, 26meters long. 2nd wall 1.5 meter wide on bottom, then 1meter, and then half meter. 3.5 meters high, 20 meters long. My idea for the foundation is to dig abou 30cm below surface add stones fraction like 0/63 and wibre it to make it strong, Can you please advise, will be the foundation enough, and what would you recomend while building it? thank you
It depends how solid the ground underneath is. If you have solid clay like I do then hardcore is good enough if it's abit soft then a concrete base would help but remember to at a 6° grade to the back of the concrete
Billy bodge repairs.
i have trouble joining a second tier of baskets, getting the long coils on the base of the second tier
You have really pushed your luck health and safety wise . Bad accident waiting to happen
right number one buckets in dumper number two trailer brake on number 3 hilux in gear and 4wd . number 4 digger on so far spin round use bucket to level out on trailer as going up . buckets wont make that much dofference at the front ur better getting the digger as far forward as poss . not beging a dick im a lowloader driver for a living so theres some tips
Is this Stump Cross/Shibden? Where do you get your gabions? I have small job to do in the garden (approx. 7m x 1.5m high), struggling to get anyone to do it so thought i'd have a go myself.
What size of steel are used?
4mil galfan Coated
Sand and grit is Let’s water drain ???
Hi Maybe this could help.. @t
Thank you for the follow up.
Thanks bud. Perfect that. I'm doing mine tomorrow with confidence
Not operator error just idiocy
I know this is an old video but honestly, I haven't found a more informative video on how to install and fill baskets . The wall looks great.
Did you have an engineer do any calcs to give you a spec for the retaining wall? I was under the impression that the gabion cages should have a d degree slope towards the land to be retained and the bottom cages should be deeper in width from front to back than the top cages?
