Chasing Fast Freight on the Reading & Northern
Hello everyone and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! Today's video features footage of the Reading, Blue Mountain, & Northern (referred to by most simply as the Reading & Northern)'s flagship freight train, designated as "NRFF" for North Reading Fast Freight. This train runs daily from the railroad's North Reading yard nonstop to Pittston and back, utilizing ample motive power to keep the train moving even on the steeper grades. This video features footage from two separate days with the same powerset, a quartet of SD40 variants along with an EMD SD50 hauling this train through the mountains of Eastern PA. On the first day the train was delayed to a later departure time due to the RBMN Office Car Special running, so we saved a nearly full chase for the next day when we followed the northbound train from Leesport to Mountain Top, before splitting off to return home. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the RBMN's most popular freight train in peak fall colors, with vintage signals, jointed rail, and plenty of Notch 8 action. Thanks as always for watching!

Hello again everyone! In today's video we'll be looking at a local job on the Ohio Central System utilizing a pair of ex-Conrail "Super 7" locomotives, still sporting the colors of the "Big Blue". These engines started their life as U23Bs built in 1972 for the Western Pacific Railroad, but were rebuilt as B23-7Rs for the Monongahela Railway in the late 1980s. Already controlled by Conrail, the ...

    That stretch between Gateway and Allegheny is the worst signalized stretch in all of the system! Drivers have to come to a full stop several times for absolutely no reason.

    • @RandomRailAdventures
      @RandomRailAdventures 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a way to control speed. The signals are timed so they remain red until a train approaches - if the operator is running at the correct speed it changes to amber as they get close. A lot of operators try to gun it and then end up having to stop or run a red.

      @@RandomRailAdventures I agree that, in theory, that's the way it's supposed to work. But I rode that segment every day for 7 years. I was on trains that "crawled" under the river and still had to come to a full 5 second stop at the light just before North Shore. I even asked operators about it, and they all hate it. The rest of the system (Wood St and outbound) has a great signal system.

      They run between 5am and 8am but all depends on how busy they are , they operate Mondays when the mill opens at the start of the week and then they only run operations about 3 times a week and it's a hit or miss of whether or not you would catch them because they're pretty fast at their work and a lot of their line is in restricted area so you can only catch them when they are close to the crossings.

    I don't think that PRT will abandon the Library Line. There are too many people who live in that part of the South Hills that depend on it to get into the city. My grandparents lived near a former stop in Bethel Park and I remember getting the streetcar there. There will be a lot of protest if the idea is even considered.

    • @RandomRailAdventures
      @RandomRailAdventures 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People thought the old streetcar lines in the 1960's wouldn't be going anywhere and 90% of the network was abandoned in about 5 years. Nothing is set in stone but PRT is openly considering the possibility of ending service, so we need to push back against that until it is no longer an option.

    When this was a through line to Wheeling, it saw about 40 freight trains at day during WW2 and numerous passenger trains. Some of the traffic was through trains from Cincinnati. Much of the traffic was between the mills in Pittsburgh and Wheeling, production of the many glass factories in Washington, Pa, and from a number of coal mines along the line. The line was double tracked from Pittsburgh down to around the Thomas tunnel in North Strabane Township. From there until Wheeling it was single tracked with many long passing sidings controlled by centralized traffic control (CTC) which was the first use of CTC on the entire B&O system. By the 1980s, before abandonment west of Washington by CSX, it was down to 2 through trains each way and a local switcher. The W&P Sub was know for its many 2% grades and tunnels. It was considered one of the most difficult lines for train handling on the entire B&O, especially during the steam era. The longest grades were Streets Run from the Whitehall tunnel down to the Mon River in Pittsburgh and the even longer West Alexander grade from the tunnel in West Alexander, PA down to the Ohio River. The longest tunnel is Brady Tunnel in South Strabane Township, which after going up a 2% grade from the village Eighty Four, PA, tunnels under Laboratory Hill and exits into the city of Washington, PA.

  • @markantony3875
    @markantony3875 ปีที่แล้ว

    At one time, this was double tracked and connected to the B&O in Washington, Pa. At is height, this branch produced 900 to 1000 car loads a day between the coal mines, heavy manufacturing plants, alloy steel mills, and glass factories. The coal has been all mined out, the glass factories are all gone, heavy manufacturing is a small shadow of its self. The section in Washington County mostly passes through what are now growing suburbs so most of the development is housing, commercial, high tech, and light industrial. Not much business for a railroad.

    Those are some neat shots you got there! Have always wanted to catch some Bessemer action on that line too. :) Hope this isn't too much of a big ask but I was wondering if you'd happen to know around what times the local with the remaining Bessemer units often runs and, if possible, what direction it tends to go in most of the time. I've just recently moved back to Ohio and am actually heading to Conneaut tomorrow to do some railfanning, initially including the crossing on Old Main Street to wait for anything to come by (I don't own a scanner at the moment so I just do the waiting-obliviously-until-something-eventually-comes thing lol). Was only until last night that I was still in the dark about most of the tunnel motors and IC units being taken off the roster and the remaining engines not being used near Conneaut as much nowadays so I may end up venturing into PA in hopes of at least catching and chasing the local, taking some of the locations here into account. I understand it's never certain with a railroad like this, as I've learned that when trying to capture W&LE trains, but if you'd happen to know any good starting points and possible time for when they're running, that'd be a great help. (If not, that's perfectly fine and understandable. I don't often make comments like this asking for help catching stuff and I'm a bit new to catching more small and unique freight power like this too. It's been something I've been wanting to have a chance to do for years and seeing how some lines such as this one are going through changes, I'm hoping to get as much as I can before it could be too late. If you do have any advice for filming along the line, that would mean a great deal to me. Though of course, if not, that's perfectly fine. In the meantime, keep up the great work with these amazing shots!)

    • @RandomRailAdventures
      @RandomRailAdventures ปีที่แล้ว

      They run these locals completely as-needed, so they could be out as few as once or twice a week or as often as daily for a bit depending on how much freight there is to move. The time can be different by day too, I’ve seen them go on duty as early as 4 or 5 in the morning and as late as the evening. A scanner definitely helps and checking the signals to see if something is lined to come through always helps. I can tell you now the Bessemer power rarely heads up the north end of the line (Greenville to Conneaut or Girard) so your best course of action is to head to Greenville near the yard and wait. Railfanning the Bessemer, especially in recent years, is the ultimate test of patience. As for getting shots, these guys fly. Unless you know all of the back roads and shortcuts you really have to spread out your shots so you don’t lose them. Track speed is 35 mph and for most of the chase the roads do not parallel the tracks, so you have to do a lot of maneuvers to beat them to spots if you plan on chasing them.

    • @HotboxHolton
      @HotboxHolton ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, gotcha. Will definitely keep that in mind next time I head out that way. I was actually setting up a list of locations that would be accessible and make for great shots along the trackside in that area while looking more into the line (Primarily at crossings because I don't wanna go anywhere that could potentially be off-limits or unsafe; though the one at Calvin Yard has had me interested but unsure since it's within the yard but people seem to be allowed to film the local switching there at that spot. Where to park has also kinda thrown me off too because I don't know if the yard's parking lot is where they are allowed to park or not.) and when finished, keeping in mind how fast the local runs, I knew some locations would definitely have to wait to be filmed on separate days. Thanks again. Much appreciated, and apologies if any of this is common knowledge or anything. Kinda starting on finally catching these more elusive railroads but as someone who's mostly only been able to film Class 1s, museums, and tourist railroads in well-known areas until recently, it's all still kinda new to me and I appreciate the pointers. :)

    • @RandomRailAdventures
      @RandomRailAdventures ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HotboxHolton Calvin Yard is fine to shoot at generally as long as you stay by the road. Park on the west side of the westmost crossing in the gravel area by the road and you should be fine. Some of the workers don't like it if you park on the road or in their lot, and at the end of the day it *is* railroad property. As long as you don't walk into the yard to get shots you shouldn't have issues, but if a worker or crew member asks you to leave just respect their request and move/leave. Good luck out there!

    One of the bridges is dedicated to my Brother Greg. He was an inspector on the project and had cancer.

    Nice video as always. Cool to see a railroad actually investing in their infrastructure and making upgrades instead of letting what they have rot away.

    Maroon and Gold is what describes the Carload Express. SWP really impresses me with SD40-2s they use along with AVR SD45 bodies. They recently bumped up the track speed at Tarrs allowing the EMD's to scream. Switching at parking lot is something not normal you would see.

    That’s rare. I’ve never seen the 2342 used on the Arden Turn as it’s usually on the Neville Turn.

      Happened twice in my adventures out there! Once in this video and another time back in April of last year.

      I've seen it exactly once, might have even been this day. Unless there's a weekend run, MWF it's a GP38 almost always.

      it seems they mostly use it for neville, but I see 2160 or 2161 working the neville side very frequently, at least once a week.

    Always neat seeing switchers hard at work- especially running up and down the line. Awesome shots!

    I'm local to the area and have never managed to catch one on the mingo viaduct or the one that goes over the mon. Great footage
